Cold Weather Survival Guide

We are Very Worried! My Girlfriendcat reports SNOW in Texas! Now we know Texas kitties often don't have much experience with this Evil White Stuff that falls from the sky, and neither do lots of other kitties living in other warm places, but living almost at the North Pole, we do, so we decided to put together a guide for surviving Cold Weather, for all you kitties who aren't sure what to do!

We have added some suggests from our readers!

The Most Important thing to remember it to STAY WARM!!! So long as your humans are ok, your food and water won't run out (though it might be a bit icky and cold), so STAYING WARM is the biggest issue!

First tip: Make efficient use of whatever sunspots you get! Your belleh is a more efficient warm collector than your back, so present your bellehs to be worshipped by the sun!

If there's no sunspots and it's naptime, you have to find a way to stay warm. Curling up in a tight ball helps you keep your heats!

Make sure your humans have provided you with MANY boxes and baskets lined with warm blankets. Especially ones you can snuggle down into. Wooly blankets are best. Sheep furs are good at retaining heat.

Mommies and Daddies are always looking at stuff that gives off heats lots. Hang out on those, and steal their warms!

Another good idea is to cover yourself up with a warm quilt.

Or crawl into cat caves.

Or closets full of long clothes that hang down around you, as the clothes will hold pockets of heat.

Take over the Mommies and Daddies' warm spots as soon as they move! You gotta act fast! Pounce in and curl up as soon as they lift their butts off the seat! The warms are going away by the time they walk away, and you don't want to lose any!

You can also snuggle with your siblings. Fat Sisters are especially warm.

JACK!!! ::whap:: Remember, DON'T LET YOUR BROTHER BITE YOU! Moms of Damocles are good for keeping Bitey Brothers from biting you!

'Finding' a good bed right beside mommies is also good as she can put her arm around you and scritch you and cuddle you all warm.

Laying across Mommy-arms is even better. You can snuggle up against her tummy, and steal her warms! Her wrists make good pillows too!

Even better than arms is human shoulders. One shoulder's good if you just want a little extra warm, or you can wrap yourself around the back of her neck. Just make her scrunch down her shoulders so you can use them as a ledge.

The back of Mommy's chair is good too, if you don't want to have to move when Mommy decides her back is hurty all scrunched up and she stretches.

If your human IS so rude as to dislodge you, you can move around to the front. Many female humans have built-in ledges there anyway, and even big mancats can have enough room if you push on her neck with your booty until she tilts her chair back so you stop strangling her.

Best of all! Curl up on your mommy's tummy and make her wrap her sweater over you and pretend you're wallabies! It's the warmest and snuggliest of all!

Of course, there's always the classic. Laps. Laps are pawsome!!!

Cheysuli and Gemini suggested making use of fireplaces. We live in an apartment and do not have one, only a picture of one on the TV. This will not keep you warm. A real fireplace will.

George, from The Crew said we should include snuggling under the blankets and quilts on the bed! I do, but only at night with Mommy, so Mommy has no pictures. I've taken over Midnight Snuggle Burgling from Whisper who went to the bridge, except I just come over and TELL Mommy to lift the covers and let me in!!

Here is Whisper showing a good way to snuggle under the blankets if Mommies aren't there and you have to keep an eye out for Hallway Monsters who might break into your house, or Bitey Brothers!

You can also snuggle ALL THE WAY under them like Jack does, if you have a Good Sistercat, like Jack does, who DOESN'T pounce you or bite you when you're snuggling under the blankets!

(Jack is getting COAL for Christmas!! I just know it!!)

Our Human has wimpy arms so the only kitty around here who could make use of Dushi and Paddy, of Cats in Trees' suggestion of snuggling in armpits was Squeak, the kitten we sat on for weeks while her people found a new place next door.

Larger cats can knock down giant humans onto beds and snuggle into armpits by being persistent and refusing to take no for an answer.

Squeak also demonstrates the smallcat alternative of snuggling in the humans' pants legs, if you don't want to be annoyed with unasked for pettins.

We have a NEW FRIEND! Harry Spotter (not him above) dropped by and said we forgot electric blankets! We did, because we don't have one of these. Daddy has a 'lectric back pad for his back, but he hides it because he doesn't want our furs all over it! Imagine!

Our friends BJ, Smokey and Sol, Jack's girlfriendcat's brothers have one. We hope their Mom ML doesn't mind that we borrowed a picture. (Here's BJ demonstrating his power of turning it on!!!)

And if the worst, the very worstest, baddest, terriblest happens, and it gets so cold your humans, who have no furs, DIE of cold...it's important to know where the best meaty bits are.

Something very exciting happened this year! WE GOT A TRICK-OR-TREATER!!!!!

This is very exciting because we have never had a trick-or-treater here. The first year, the OTW made me a costume (a Viking!), took pictures of me in it, and tried it on Whisper too (no luck there). She decorated the house, put on a costume, and had a bowl of candy all ready to go, and not one trick-or-treater came to the door.

The second year she kinda faked costumes for me and Persephone (Persephone's frootbat wings were really on a wire, and my costume of Dr Doom only worked because she put a world beside me); she decorated a little, skipped wearing a costume and wore black, and had a box of candy in the cupboard just in case, and not one trick-or-treater came to the door.

The third year, she photo-shopped most of our costumes (Persephone really was wearing Karl-ish sunglasses, and I had on a real mask, but the rest... though the Hendrix/Bendrix bandanas were COOOOOL!), stuck a couple of Halloween black cat decorations where she could see them, wore whatever she wanted, and didn't bother buying candy, and not one trick-or-treater came to the door.

This year...we did not have to get dressed up at all. Or even have our pictures changed. She did not decorate the house. She wore grey. The Big One did bring home candy because it was already on sale, and it's the only kind of Halloween chocolate bars she can have because they don't put peanuts in any of them, and ONE trick-or-treater came to the door! (Though she had to rip open the box and dump the candy in a bowl to give him some!)

I think the trick-or-treater came because she didn't make us dress up!

We ignored the whole thing and went to Mickey and Mrs. Peach's wedding and when we got home we decided we wanted to dress up and go trick-or-treating ourselves 'cause it was still early out west when it was night at the wedding. But then we found out we had both dressed up as Basement Cat and were so mortified at wearing the same costume we had to take a long nap!

We had a Treat-bag ready and everything!

We did see something really scary near dawn though...

You click on the light circles and turn them dark, and try to herd the kitty into a closed circle to catch it before it makes it's way to the edge and scampers away (you have to keep clicking to make a smaller circle until the kitty has nowhere to jump). But every time you click a circle, the cat jumps to another circle! It's a sneaky-puss!

I remember sun...we used to have that. It was nice. It warmed mah belleh!

House of (Mostly) Cat Beds, that is!!!!

The OTW was 'joking' just the day before my AWESOME GIZZY QUILT from KC, the Bestest Girlfriendcat in the World! arrived, that we've become the House of (Mostly) Cat Beds!

I was going to post our 13 beds for Thursday Thirteen, but then I started counting them, and there were a lot more than 13. So I was going to post my 13 favourite cat beds, and Persephone hers, but I have SIXTEEN favourite beds! And Persephone has FIFTEEN!!!

But then I noticed we had THIRTEEN pictures of cat beds, with TWENTY SIX cat beds in them!

So I'm posting THIRTEEN pictures of our THIRTEEN and another THIRTEEN cat beds for Thursday Thirteen-a Triple Thursday Thirteen!

Picture #1, Bed #1-Persephone's chair- her favourite (It's beside my mommy!!!)

Picture #2, Bed #2 (an triple-decker!) Persephone likes the top best, I like inside best, and we both like sitting in front keeping an eye on the OTW, especially when she's eating!

Bed #11- A BOX! With the PiRATs's water all folded up inside!
Bed #12- The cat tree (Persephone likes being on top, I like being on top when the OTW remembers her JOB and carries me to the top)
Bed #13- The Cat house (I like going inside when the sunspots move there! Also fun to bunny kick!)
Bed #14- The bench (we don't use it much, but sometimes it has sunspots! Squeak used to like sitting there!)

Bed #15- MY basket! MINE! My favourite basket 'cause I can see my OTW from there, and the front door, and anyone or anycat going from one part of the apartment to the other!
Bed #16- Under the table, good for when I want to keep an eye on the OTW but I don't want her to see me! Plus, the OTW made it the Official Kitty Corner!

Bed #17- Persephone's Other Other Chair where she can keep an eye on the door and the peoples going in and out of the kitchen, so she can run real fast to under-their-feet in case they're opening anything that might be interesting to Squishy Sisters!

Bed #21- My alternate basket for me to sit in to keep an eye on the OTW when she sits in this room sewing and cutting and printing and stuff too long, and I can't keep an eye on her from my usual basket because she's in the wrong room!

Picture #9, Bed #22- my closet (for when there's claw clipping going on, or hairball goop going on (paws), or it's cold, or I don't want the OTW to find me, or there's toy sucker-uppers running around, or just because I feel like it!)

(The door's usually closed more and against the shelf and it's dark when the flashy-box isn't going off so she can't see me in there and usually finds me by sticking her hand in and feeling for fuzzy bits. I'm working on the fuzzing up the cloth more so eventually she can't tell if it's me or just the cloth!)

Picture #10, Bed #23- Persephone's OTHER Other Other Chair, when she wants to be in the lair with the rest of us, but the Big One is kicking too much, or she wants to get in the OTW's drawers, or she's being a Bad Sister and waiting for me to pass so she can whap me on the HEAD!

Picture #11, Bed #24- The closet perch that's high enough to keep an eye on the humans from at night if the Big One is kicking too much, or if the Hallway Monster is in the Hallway and Persephone wants to hide, but not at the back of the closet unless she has to because then she couldn't see it coming if it came in the house and went hunting for her all the way at the far end of the apartment from the door this time!

Picture #12, Bed #25- another closet cat bed, we don't use it much, the OTW is going to move it.

Picture #13, Bed #26- The BEST BED EVAR!!!!! This is our lair, where the humans sleep and I sleep on the OTW, and this corner is MINE, 'cause it's got my bestest friend Scarfie, MY Scarfie!, and MY lei, and MY human sleeps on this side where I can sleep between her legs on MY Scarfie, with MY lei!

I GOT A GIZZY QUILT!!!!!

My beautiful girlfriendcat KC, and her Mom ML got me a Gizzy Quilt from Millie and her Mom!!!

Yup. Feels pretty good under my booty! And look! It's mostly RED! And it has black cats all over it!

After I checked it out, Persephone came over and lay right down on it. (That's how she checks out things, usually... That and sniffing and licking her nose)

Guess what else it's good for?

POUNCING!!!!!

And also MORE POUNCING!!!! I am fierce!

Having vanquished my new Gizzy Quilt, I shall now kill it by my usual method of lying-on-it-till-it's-deaded.

Of course, Persephone had to kill it too then!

And then look at the OTW like SHE brought home the prey!

It's also good for the Amazing Astounding Burrito-Kitty!

Staying Home Sunday

Wow! Thanks for the great House-Trashing Party, guys!!! Sorry we didn't post sooner, the OTW came back from her trip half-dead and slept for four days (when she wasn't honking!)

We wanted to post pictures of the aftermath, but the humans were both so dead they couldn't remember where the camera had gone, and they just brought it back into the house today, and the OTW was feeling better a couple days ago and cleaned it up.

(ed. from OTW: and you might have gotten to blog sooner if you little hellions hadn't done such a number on the house! Pair of Basement Cats, the both of you! And tempting your friends into your misbehaving! Honestly! Ouch! No licking with fangs, Jack!)

I'm making sure she doesn't go away any time soon though!

And we're now announcing the names of my ratty minions! We got a lot of good suggestions, and we liked them and thank you, (especially for those who suggested names that were important to them) but in the end, as much as we liked all the names, my favourite suggestion was from Chey who said "Haminal" which made the OTW think of Hannibal. No, not the icky guy from the movie, Hannibal the ancient Cartiginian military commander. And she thought we should name them all after famous generals and warriors (but not kings- 'cause they're my minions, and I RULE them with an Iron Paw!!!!).

And I liked everycat's suggestion of calling them food. So I've decided I'm going to call MY rats, the General Foods International Army!

I have 11 names so far!

She says "try again". And also that she'd love to know why a name was suggested, if you want to tell us. Except for the food names. She says she KNOWS why you'd name them after foods, and muttered something about "furry little walking stomachs"! (P.S. she went out and got a stack more of tuna and chicken and turkey and ham, and bags and bags of Temptations. And litter.)

Today is my Birthday!!!! I'm Lucky Thirteen today! (Thank you for the great picture, KC!!!!)

And no claw-clipping this year!!! (the OTW did it last week, my claws don't grow that fast anymore).

The OTW says no toys this year. She says I already have too many. She says I never play with most of them anyway. She says she can't buy me anything, 'cause I never like what she gets me, and I mostly play with "trash" and my old toys and stuff she makes or gets for Persephone.

I was thinking my OTW sucks as a human, but then she said she got me something better....

We got lots of kibble (the GOOD stuff!), cans and cans and cans of tuna, and turkey and chicken and gooshy foods and spam (Spam? Really? We have SPAM, OTW?!?!?), and Temptations! And we can drive my OTW around the bend!

HI!!!!! IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE I REPORTED!!!!!! I FOUND THIS JAR OF NUMMY TREATS!!!! I DON'T THINK I SHOULD HAVE EATEN SO MANY!!!!!

Several hours later.....

The Mom-Person hid all her good Pooh toys, but I think I've found a good substitute. Is anyone looking?

Hmmmm...no alarms going off.

I've gotten up to all kinds of other mischief too! When the Mom-Person came back after going to say goodbye to her Dad I pretended to be the Oh-So-Innocent Princess Pudgie-butt, and got the Mom-Person to pick me up for a cuddle and then I launched myself off her!

I got the Mom-Person to start calling Little Miss Meepface "Miss Chompy McGee"!

No Mom-Person's Book is safe from my Toothy Death!

And no Dad-Person's Paper either!

I stole a whole bunch of Poohs before the Mom-Person hid them all!

I stole some Mom-Person dessert too!

Why NO, "Mommy", I'm not trying to steal the catnip! I'm your sweet innocent little Persephone Girl-Cat!

And now I'm going to plan my revenge on those little snitches that ratted me out!

I CAUGHT A BUG!!!!!

THIS bug!!! (I didn't eat it though, it poked me in the nose so I shook it and spit it on the ground and mommy hollered at daddy to COME RIGHT NOW and I thought she was afraid of the bug and I was gonna save her but then she grabbed the camera and took a picture and gave daddy a magazine to scoop the bug up and shoo it out but he DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO CATCH A BUG! so she laughed and took the magazine away and did it herself and now the bug is out in the yard!) It's a BIG BUG!!!!!

I hunted it here behind the computer in the envelopes and mommy didn't even know it was there. I'm checking for more bugs in the picture. There weren't any.

But I'm keeping a close eye out anyway, just in case....

Persephone never got to meet him, but he always petted and scritched me lots when he came to visit, almost before he kissed my OTW hello. Whisper liked him too. And he always asked about us when he called.
