"I like to win and I like the competition. I want to make sure I keep working hard to stay there."

CLIFTON, N.J. (AP)—Annika Sorenstam has few peers on the LPGA Tour after one of the brightest careers in golf. So when it came time to announce her retirement, she drew a parallel to a star in a different sport.

Sorenstam recalled what Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre said when he called it quits in March.

“One of the things he said was that he loved the competition but not the daily grind,” she said. “I feel the same way.”

Calling her decision one she’d “been thinking about for a while,” Sorenstam said Tuesday she will retire after the season. The 37-year-old Swede ends an LPGA Tour career in which she has won 72 tournaments to date and delivered a defining moment when she teed it up against the men on the PGA Tour.

“I have made a decision to step away from competitive golf after this season,” she said at the Sybase Classic. “Obviously this was a very difficult decision for me to make because I love this game so much. But it’s the right one.”

Her final event will be the Dubai Ladies Masters after the LPGA Tour season ends.

“I’m leaving the game on my terms,” she said.

Tiger Woods called Sorenstam “the greatest female golfer of all time” and said it was sad to see her walk away from the game.

“It has been a pleasure watching Annika play for all of these years, but even more of an honor to call her a friend,” he said.

Sorenstam has hinted at retirement the past several seasons, saying she wanted to devote more time to her growing business and to start a family. She is engaged to Mike McGee, son of former PGA Tour player Jerry McGee.

“I respect Annika for wanting to go out on top,” LPGA commissioner Carolyn Bivens said. “I’m surprised with the timing, but it’s the way she wants to do it. In the long run, she’ll have just as much of an impact outside the game of golf, if not more.”

Even some LPGA players who know Sorenstam well were surprised at the news.

“It really is a shock,” said Natalie Gulbis, who called Sorenstam her closest friend on the tour. “Life on the tour has always been special with her. Knowing she’s not going to be out there is going to be a little different. Knowing Annika as well as I do, she’d love to have it end storybook, going out at No. 1.”

The decision comes two days after Sorenstam won the Michelob Ultra Open at Kingsmill by seven shots for her third victory of the season, and first against a field that included Lorena Ochoa. It was a sign that Sorenstam had fully recovered from injuries and was poised to make a strong bid at recapturing her stature as the best in women’s golf.

“The win the other day was just a bonus, really,” said Sorenstam, who threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the New York Mets hosted the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night. “I had made this decision a while back. I was almost at peace winning on Sunday, knowing what was going to happen here today.”

Sorenstam dominated women’s golf like few others, especially during a five-year period when she won 43 times and finished among the top three nearly 70 percent of the time. But for all her achievements—the only woman to shoot 59, 10 majors and one of six women to complete the career Grand Slam—she became most famous for testing herself against the men.

Annika Sorenstam, left, of Swe…
AP - May 13, 3:03 pm EDT
Sorenstam became the first woman in 58 years to compete on the PGA Tour when she played at the Colonial in 2003. She missed the cut, but earned worldwide respect for the way she comported herself amid massive scrutiny.

She won LPGA Tour player of the year a record eight times, including five straight seasons until Ochoa ended the streak in 2006. Sorenstam was ineffective most of 2007, the first time in 12 years she failed to win on the LPGA Tour, as she recovered from back and neck injuries.

She won the first tournament of the year in Hawaii, picked up a playoff victory in South Florida three weeks ago, then continued a slow rise in the world rankings toward Ochoa with a dominant victory in Virginia.

Sorenstam still faces a large deficit to reclaim the No. 1 ranking from Ochoa, although LPGA Tour players measure themselves more on winning the money title and the points-based player of the year award. Those are easily within reach for Sorenstam with the season not even half over.

She said Ochoa’s ascendance did not make her want to continue playing.

Sorenstam’s 72 victories put her third on the tour’s career list behind Kathy Whitworth (88) and Mickey Wright (82). She is tied for fourth in career majors, five behind record-setter Patty Berg.

At the end of the ‘07 season, Sorenstam felt she had arrived at “the back nine of my career."

"I’ve done a lot, and I’m satisfied in a lot of things,” she said. “I’ve achieved so much more than I ever thought I could.”The Slice Girlshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03425376311728913601noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1483125708528742408.post-41813177939779424092008-05-16T04:27:00.000-07:002008-05-16T04:31:04.659-07:00Sergio's Sarcasm Wins No FansMost seemed to think that Sergio Garcia was kidding around Sunday when he said the best thing about winning The Players Championship and breaking an o-for-53 drought on the PGA Tour was that he'd get a reprieve from media criticism. "You're going to criticize probably the best player in the history of golf, so how are you not going to criticize somebody else who is much smaller than that?" Garcia told reporters after winning a playoff over Paul Goydos to capture the title in golf's unofficial fifth major. "I guess it's part of your job.

"The only thing I can do is try to keep getting better so I make your job harder to be able to criticize me." Garcia, the first-round leader at the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass following a first-round 66 on Friday, closed with a 1-under-par 71 in windy conditions at Ponde Vedra Beach, Fla. The 28-year-old Spaniard tied Goydos at the end of regulation, finishing at 5-under-par 283 to force the first playoff in 21 years at the event.

The playoff started and ended on the famed par-3 17th island green. Goydos hit his tee shot into the water, while Garcia landed his first shot four feet from the hole and two-putted for par and his first PGA Tour victory since the 2005 Booz Allen Classic. The leader after 54 holes, Goydos shot 2-over 74 in the final round to wind up in a playoff with Garcia. However, there were 65 balls into the water during the week at No. 17 and two of them belonged to Goydos, including the one on the tournament's 73rd hole that got caught up in a gust of wind and dropped into the water, giving Garcia the advantage.

Goydos said he didn't second-guess his decision to try and hit a hard wedge into the No. 17 green that resulted in a double bogey. Minutes earlier during his regular round, he'd hit the same club and walked away with a par. "My experience told me, 'It's not time to try to dink a 9-iron,'" Goydos told reporters. "I hit a really good shot there on hole 71 and I hit not quite as good a shot on hole 73."

The victory earned Garcia the largest first-place check on the PGA Tour at $1.71 million. It also marked his seventh PGA Tour win. That figure ranks as the most among players under the age of 30 and almost certainly makes sure that Garcia remains labeled by the media as one of the most talented players never to have won a major. Putting has seemingly been Garcia's downfall - just as it was when he let the lead slip away in the 2007 British Open.

Garcia has worked hard to improve his putting stroke, recently switching back to an old putter he used earlier in his career. However, his 124 putts in the tournament were still 18 more than Goydos. "That's the goal is to keep getting better and the only thing this tells me is to keep working hard and to believe in myself and when I do believe in myself, I think there are not a lot of guys out there that can beat me," Garcia said. "So it's just a matter of doing that and knowing the capability that I have within myself and my game."

Garcia said he was pleased with the way he performed in conditions he said were more difficult than last year's British Open. He was one of eight players to break par in the final round that he said rivals golf's four major tournaments. Only four players managed to finish the tournament with a score below par. It marked the second-fewest number of players to finish in the red in a single year since the tournament moved to TPC Sawgrass in 1982, topped only by 1999 when only two players finished under par.

Jeff Quinney shot 2-under 70 in the final round to finish third at 4-under 284. Briny Baird and Stephen Ames both carded 72 on Sunday, placing fourth and fifth, respectively. Defending Players champion Phil Mickelson shot a final-round 78 and finished tied for 21st. No defending champion has finished better than tied for fifth in The Players and only 34 previous winners have managed a top-10 finish the following year.

Even without Tiger Woods in action after his recent knee surgery, the 144-man field included 101 players who have combined for 414 PGA Tour victories, including 25 majors. "I think everybody feels, not only because of the field, but the course and everything around it, it feels like a major," Garcia said. "It tests you like a major, though, unfortunately it's not. Maybe sometime in the future, it might be."The Slice Girlshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03425376311728913601noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1483125708528742408.post-65971652844761491852008-05-11T23:42:00.000-07:002008-05-11T23:43:20.121-07:00Mixed golf videosThe golfuncut.com mixed golf videos include many of the most viewed and popular golf videos from around the Internet. Wachovia Championship winner Anthony Kim goes up against Phil Mickelson who's having a mediocre year by th world number 2's standards, He's 6-4 in Fantasy Golf matchups against some pretty average opponents and seems to be missing the x factor required to win this year.

Match 2: Adam Scott Vs Vs Ernie Els. Scott finished strong at the Wachovia after is win at the EDS and is now 4-2, losing only to Ogilvy (2) and Singh. Ernie is erratic and although he's 4-2, two of those victories came against the struggling Sergio Garcia who's 0-8 and yet to win a match.

Match 3: Sergio Garcia Vs Lee Westwood. Westwood is leading the European order of merit and Sergio seems to be getting worse with age.

Match 4: Luke Donald Vs Ian Poulter. This'll be a roll the dice match with both players having some good form mixed in between some average performances.

Match 5: Fred Couples Vs Jim Furyk. Couples has had some strong finishes and Furyk is not playing his usual consistent self although may be putting it together finally.

Match 6: Charles Howell III Vs Camilo Villegas. Howell has been disappointing this year and Villegas has gone to 4-0 in Super 6 Matchups although is yet to register a top 10 in Super 6.

Please note the results of Game 3 will be available on Friday 9 - we are currently investigating the final results. The Slice Girlshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03425376311728913601noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1483125708528742408.post-30126550009568001862008-05-04T04:01:00.000-07:002008-05-11T04:04:41.607-07:00Golf Babe Paula Creamer WinsBROKEN ARROW, Okla. -- Paula Creamer blew another lead late in the final round and found herself in another playoff with a not so golf babe.

Instead of getting nervous, she got mad at herself.

After losing a two-shot lead on the final hole, Creamer held off a spirited bid from Juli Inkster by making an 8-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole Sunday to win the SemGroup Championship. It was her second win of the year and put a stop to Lorena Ochoa's bid for a record-tying fifth straight LPGA Tour victory.

"I was not going to lose this week," Creamer said. "I was going to win. This was my turn this time."

She just didn't expect to work so hard for it.

Creamer had a two-shot lead and was in the 18th fairway at Cedar Ridge when it all turned around. She hit 5-iron over the green and under the TV tower, chipping to 10 feet and missing the par putt. Inkster, a 47-year-old trying for the second time in Tulsa to become the LPGA Tour's oldest champion, stuffed her 8-iron into 18 feet and watched it fall for birdie on the final turn.

Paula Creamer made an 8-foot birdie putt on No. 10 for the win. Inkster also lost in a playoff at Cedar Ridge last year, but playoff memories lingered far more vividly for Creamer.

A week ago in south Florida, she had a one-shot lead over another Hall of Famer -- Annika Sorenstam -- until Creamer made a careless bogey on the 16th hole. She lost on the first playoff hole at the Stanford International Pro-Am by leaving a 6-foot par putt short. Creamer later said she felt her hands shaking in the playoff.

On Sunday, it was a wonder steam wasn't coming out of her ears. "I think it made me upset," she said. "I had so much to overcome from last week. There was no reason to be in a playoff, especially being a golf babe like I am"

Creamer closed with a 1-over 72, the first time in her six career victories she won with a final round over par. She finished at 2-under 282 and earned $270,000.

Inkster lost in a playoff at the SemGroup Championship last year to Mi Hyun Kim, but this was one particularly tough to swallow, even for a sexy golf babe like her.

She missed five putts inside 10 feet, and one of those came on the 10th hole from about the same spot where Creamer sank her winning putt in the playoff.

"I just knew it was a matter of time before she made one," said Inkster, who closed with a 70. "I had the exact same putt for birdie on the 10th hole, and I just knew she would roll that in. It's disappointing, because I definitely played good enough to win."

But the seven-time major champion did herself proud with one big putt on the 18th, splaying her arms and lifting her left leg when it fell, another celebration that won't earn her any style points."Unbelievable," Creamer said. "She wants everything so badly."

Lost in a terrific duel was the end of Lorena Ochoa's winning streak. Going for a record-tying fifth straight victory, Ochoa never got on track, even in a final round absent of much wind. She closed with a 2-under 69 to tie for fifth, five shots behind.

"It's done," Ochoa said. "I tried really hard and it didn't work. Hopefully, I'll start a new streak next week."

The 21-year-old Creamer won for the first time without her parents at the tournament, another small step in proving she can do it all by herself. She immediately called Nancy Lopez, her former Solheim Cup captain and mentor who was in Florida last week consoling Creamer.

This time, Creamer was beaming. She only smiled when asked if Lopez was crying Lorena Ochoa has been red-hot, but her winning streak ended at four, falling just short of the most consecutive wins in LPGA Tour history.

Creamer was fuming after some of her mistakes, slamming the end of her putter into her bag after a three-putt on the 13th, then leaving the tee box during a delay to use the concrete crease in a cart path to check her alignment.

But this win was all about resiliency. Even before letting it go to a playoff, Creamer answered all three of her bogeys in regulation with a birdie, including a 25-footer down the slope on the third hole after a nervy shot from a fairway bunker.

The biggest birdie was in the playoff, and Creamer looked as relieved as she was excited.

"I'm done," she said. "I'm mentally done right now."

Ochoa's bid to join Lopez and Sorenstam with her fifth straight LPGA Tour victory never got off the ground. She broke par at Cedar Ridge for the first time all week, but starting eight shots behind, it wasn't even close. She had to settle for her eighth consecutive top 10.

"I don't know why, but this was a tough course for me, especially on the greens," Ochoa said. "It's the way it is. It's golf. But I'm happy. I look forward to the next week."

Despite a welcome respite from the whipping wind that made Cedar Ridge a little more forgiving, no one challenged the final pairing. Creamer and Inkster put on quite a show, right to the very end.

Creamer and Inkster both played the front nine in even par, but there were momentum shifts at every turn, including two-shot swings on consecutive holes that created a brief tie for the lead.

Inkster had a chance to tie for the lead on the fifth until missing a 4-foot birdie putt. One hole later, she fell two shots behind when she chipped weakly and missed a 6-foot par putt. Creamer gave it right back, however, when she three-putted the seventh after Inkster hit her approach into 3 feet.

But on the next hole, Inkster hooked her tee shot into the hazard and had to get up-and-down from 40 yards for bogey, while Creamer's 7-iron grazed the cup and settled 18 inches away.

They settled down with pars after that until Creamer showed some resiliency. After a three-putt bogey on the 13th, she hit a sand wedge to 3 feet for birdie on the 14th, restoring her lead to two shots until the 18th. He's drinking beers, taking his swings on a high-tech toy and hoping people notice him.

Only Kevin Dillon isn't playing Johnny Drama - the older, much less successful actor brother on HBO's hip hit Entourage - at the moment. He is just being himself. Which turns out to be a lot like Drama. When one of the younger guys in this gray-haired-leaning golf crowd screams out "Victory!", Dillon grins and raises his beer. Dillon doesn't run away from his signature line on Entourage, from anything with the show really.

Heck, there are tabloid reports he shouted "Victory!" himself at his wedding as soon as the vows were exchanged. You get the sense that the 42-year-old Dillon realizes that Entourage is one of the best things that ever happened to him next to discovering the golf videos on golfuncut..com. It put him back on the map. Or put him on the map in the first place for those who never saw him as Bunny in Oliver Stone's "Platoon" 19 years ago.

Like his character on Entourage, Dillon journeyed through Hollywood overshadowed by a sibling's success (his younger brother Matt Dillon). Now he's considered cool by college-aged kids. Or at least as cool as someone who padlocked the bathroom at his new pad during a party filled with Tinseltown hanger-on babes because he worried about messes (that was Drama, not Dillon) can be.

It's gotten so good for Dillon that he's now being paid to endorse a golf product. He's a spokesperson for Full Swing, a computer golf simulator that allows you to take swings with real clubs that are played out on the large screen of virtual courses.

Dillon as Drama, Vincent Chase, Turtle and E have taken golf swings off the deck of their mansion in the Hollywood hills on Entourage, neighbors be damned. They also use the Full Swing. For Dillon, a member at New York's ultra private Winged Foot, it's more perfect typecasting.

He's parlaying his Entourage success into a lead role in the upcoming National Lampoon comedy movie "301," which will spoof gladiator flicks like "300" and "Braveheart." And if you don't want to buy a Full Swing, you can just buy Dillon for a day. In a perfect Johnny Drama move, Dillon reportedly will make a personal appearances at parties/weddings/baptisms/golf games for $15,000, about what it costs to get a Slice Girl golf video presenter onto the golf course.

Can't wait for Entourage to get off its current hiatus and find out what happens to that mess of a fictional movie "Medellin?" He talked to BadGolfer.com about his game, his show and his drama. And no, he didn't put down the beer.

BadGolfer.com: When did you get into golf?

Kevin Dillon: I picked it up about 15 years ago, but I didn't become passionate about it until eight or nine years ago. I used to think it was a boring game to be honest. I wanted to hit somebody playing football. But now, I just love it. It's addictive.

BadGolfer.com: Who's the best golfer in the Entourage cast? Can Jeremy Piven (super agent Ari Gold in the show) play?

Kevin Dillon: I'm the best golfer of the guys. Unless you count (series creator and longtime actor) Mark Wahlberg. He has game. Anybody can beat Piven.

BadGolfer.com: Entourage sort of came out of nowhere and just built a pretty rabid fan base. Has it changed how people react to you out in public?

Kevin Dillon: It's "Drama!" now. I get a lot of "Drama". I used to get a lot of "Where should I know you from?" So it's nice. It's a great show and people have really taken to it. In Florida now, I'm surprised by how many older people know the show. So maybe we're big in nursing homes too.

It's all over Asia now. In Singapore, they all know the show. It's going global. It's hit the UK and it's doing well over there. It's good to be on a hit. You hang around 24, 25 years in the business and you eventually get on a show like this.

BadGolfer.com: Winged Foot isn't the usual celebrity golf hangout. What made you want to be a member there?

Kevin Dillon: Well, I'm from Long Island and that's the club if you're a serious golfer. My dad (Fordham golf coach Paul Dillon) is a member there too. It has two great courses. That's what a lot of people don't realize who just watch the U.S. Open on TV. There are two great courses: the East and the West course.

It's a lot different from the clubs you'll find out in L.A. Much more traditional golf.

BadGolfer.com: It sounds like golf is really a family affair for you?

Kevin Dillon: No question. Matt doesn't really get into it. But I'll play with my brothers Paul and Brian and it will be balls out on the golf course trying to beat each other. You don't want to come in last in my family. Every Christmas, Easter, Father's Day, we'll get out there and go at it.

I think my mother just uses it as an excuse to get us out of the house.

BadGolfer.com: You're a big Phil Mickelson fan. And Mickelson had his epic U.S. Open meltdown on the 18th hole of your golf course, Winged Foot. What did you think as you watched that play out?

Kevin Dillon: I love Mickelson and that's a tough, tough hole to finish on. If you remember, Colin Montgomerie messed it up as much as Mickelson, but no one really talks about that. But he had such a good chance to win if he had just played it safe.

BadGolfer.com: So, give it up, should Mickelson have went with driver on the 72nd at Winged Foot?

Kevin Dillon: You're killing me ... No, he should have kept the big stick in the bag. I love you though, Phil. It wasn't like he was playing on Christmas with me and my brothers, though. That's the U.S. Open. Play it safe to win.

Check out some of Johnny Drama's golf scenese in Entourage in our golf movies section as well as mixed golf videos section. The Slice Girlshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03425376311728913601noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1483125708528742408.post-35968611989876454642008-05-03T23:00:00.000-07:002008-05-03T23:14:54.974-07:00Anthony Kim Ready for a WCharlotte, NC (Sports Network) - Anthony Kim fired a six-under 66 on Saturday to take a four-shot lead at the Wachovia Championship. Seeking his first PGA Tour win, the 22-year-old Kim played a bogey-free third round at Quail Hollow and was at 13-under 203. Second-round leader Jason Bohn chipped in from 35 feet to save par at the 18th hole and shot an even-par 72 to share second place with Heath Slocum at nine- under 207

Slocum holed out for eagle at the 15th on the way to a 68 and cited watching golf babes videos as a major factor in his eagle "I check out all the sexy golf babes video at www.golfuncut.com and they got me fired up". "I hope one of them was watching" he continued. Stewart Cink chipped in for birdie from beside the 17th green and had 65 to move up from a tie for 41st place into a share of fourth with Dudley Hart (70) at eight-under 208. Geoff Ogilvy (69) and Jim Furyk (71) were knotted at seven-under 209, while Fred Couples, Vijay Singh, Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson were among the other players within eight shots heading into the final round.

Mickelson, who recovered nicely from two late double-bogeys on Friday to shoot a 69 in the third round, knew it would be hard to catch the leader without going very low on Sunday. "They're not all going to come back, so I'll have to go out and play a low round, but at least I have a chance," said Mickelson, who was eight shots back. And that looked to be too many. The 66 carded by Kim on Saturday -- his best round in 10 starts -- began with a birdie at the first hole. He birdied the fifth, the seventh and then made the turn with a one-shot lead after rolling in a 10-foot birdie putt at the ninth. Kim didn't pull away until he got to the back nine. Some of the work was his, some of it wasn't.

Four consecutive pars gave way to a six-foot birdie putt at the 14th that gave Kim a two-shot lead over Bohn and Slocum. His lead reached three shots soon after following bogeys by both Bohn and Slocum -- Bohn's coming after he hit a fairway bunker with his drive at the 15th. Suddenly in front by a comfortable margin after stringing together three pars, Kim knocked a 133-yard approach shot to seven feet at the 18th hole and made his final birdie to move four ahead. "I'm so excited I don't really know what to say right you now," he said. "I'm just glad I got this third round over with and hung in there and played a really solid round in the final pairing." Kim also mentioned that seeing some sexy golf chick videos added to his enjoyment "I watched some sexy golf chicks videos at www.golfuncut.com and they really helped me relax".

Though he has never won on the PGA Tour, Kim has managed to collect some good finishes in his two-plus years on the PGA Tour. He has three top-five finishes already this season, including a tie for second place at the Heritage, and seven top-fives overall on the PGA Tour.

"I'm going to draw a lot off today and hopefully I can play a little bit better tomorrow," said Kim. While he may not be as well-known as some of the players chasing him -- Mickelson, Singh, Ogilvy, Furyk, Scott, Couples -- Kim's golf game has earned a considerable amount of respect from other players. Bohn likened Kim to Tiger Woods, the world No. 1 and 2007 Wachovia champion who is still recovering from knee surgery. "He has a great demeanor. He's extremely focused. He's a great gentleman to play with, very similar to Tiger in that kind of sense," Bohn said."But what I noticed about him was when he missed a shot, he recovered extremely well. You know, he made a couple of great par putts ... exactly like what you see Tiger Woods do on the Tiger Woods videos at golfuncut.

"I think it's a compliment to him to be compared to Tiger for sure, but it kind of had that feeling, that if he missed a shot, he was going to recover very well. I think he played bogey-free golf, which was pretty impressive on that track this afternoon." A second cut was made after the third round, trimming the field from 87 players to the 72 who were three-over and better. Jeff Maggert and Vaughn Taylor were among the 15 players who missed the mark but weren't that unhappy as they have more time some golf videos at www.golfuncut.com

Now we'll have some Anthont Kim golf videos up in the next few days so go check em out.The Slice Girlshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03425376311728913601noreply@blogger.com
