We've been working very hard on pressuring the ball, using our bodies more, and being more physical. The girls' effort in practice showed on the field, as they dominated every facet of the game.

Jessica Wyker earned the first captains' armband by creating some dangerous scoring opportunities, making some excellent attacking runs from the flank. Polly Healy earned the second captains' armband by playing terrific defense and scoring the game winning goal after receiving Rachelle Delle-Fratte's corner kick. Kylie Fleming had the clean sheet in goal. Kylie had two nice saves in the 0-0 first half, but went largely untested in the 2nd half behind strong defensive play from Cate Coughter, Janna Steadman, Rachelle, and Polly. Annie Bokulic kept up her stong play this season with our second goal, and Megan Kyte completed the scoring by nailing a strong left-footed shot after a mishandle by the keeper. Everyone had their best match of the year - by far. What fun it was to watch that level of skill combined with great effort!

95G White stands 1-1 in ODSL play heading into this weekend's matchup with Loudoun 95G Silver, 1:30 PM at Lucketts. More importantly, the girls tallied 11 Maggie Moo points this week, just 9 points short of our goal.Coach Edhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16827173817489349602noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14779045.post-50341044711028931892008-04-06T09:42:00.002-04:002008-04-06T10:34:50.882-04:00Yummy Bake Sale! Thanks to everyone who participated in yesterday's Bake Sale at the Sterling Walmart, and a special thanks to our organizers - the Alexanders and the Bokulics.

Yesterday's event netted $311 for the team.Coach Edhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16827173817489349602noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14779045.post-85961641893442567942008-04-06T09:31:00.003-04:002008-04-06T09:42:53.447-04:00ODSL Game 195G White traveled to Faquier County yesterday (some of us took more circuitous routes than others) for a 3-1 defeat at the hand of the FCSC Thunder.

We discussed two keys in our pregame meeting. First, we needed to rely on our footskills and not regress into kick & run soccer. Second, we needed to not back down to an opponent who was physically bigger than we are. On the first, we did a reasonable job of using our footskills, although our first touches let us down a number of times. We did not do a good job, however, of standing up physically to our opponent, which ultimately cost us the game. Our post-game messages were that:

1) A player who uses her body to win the ball will always beat a player who only tries to win the ball with a foot.

2) Collisions are part of soccer. In a collision situation, the player who tries to back down from a collision is always the one who gets hurt -- not the person that initiates a collision.

Short story -- while we will always continue to work on improving our technical skills, we also need to improve our aggressiveness and level of physical play.

Janna Steadman earned a captains' armband for this week with some strong defensive play. Kylie Fleming earned the second captains' armband for scoring our lone goal of the match. Annie Bokulic, Polly Healy, and Cate Coughter played strong games as well.Coach Edhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16827173817489349602noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14779045.post-27232548836392634042008-03-31T19:55:00.000-04:002008-03-31T19:56:06.405-04:00Saturday Bake SaleThe bake sale is still on for this Sat. Although the girls didn't get to the finals, we were able to take several positives out of the event.

First, the team had a positive goal differential, scoring 9 and giving up only 5. We've used our limited practice time to work on our pressure/cover/balance defensively, and it showed. The girls gave up more than one goal in only one game during the tournament. Second, the team learned a lot about playing under adversity as two players went down with injuries during day 1 and were unavailable during day 2. Down two players, the girls played the FPYC Strikers to a 1-0 loss, then defeated the CYA Fuego 2-1 in the afternoon.

Erin Windland led the team in goals, closely followed by Annie Bokulic. Both girls earned Captain's bands for next week's ODSL opening game, and both played some of the best soccer in their travel careers.

Even though we missed the finals, I'm very proud of the girls and the way they handled the injuries, poor fields, and crappy weather. We're looking forward to taking this weekend's momentum into our ODSL opener on Saturday, and we're looking forward to getting our injured kids back in one piece.Coach Edhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16827173817489349602noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14779045.post-64523905089043302992008-01-26T15:55:00.000-05:002008-01-26T15:56:30.471-05:00Game vs Loudoun 95G SilverReminder - Please wear your red uniforms for tomorrow's game vs the Silver team.Coach Edhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16827173817489349602noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14779045.post-23195521338725161892007-10-09T06:27:00.000-04:002007-10-09T06:28:39.771-04:00What I learned being captain - by Megan WWhen I was captain I learned that I had to be a leader and responsible for the team. I was captain for the whole Manassas Battlefield Classic Tournament with Katie. Being captain was fun because I got to lead stretches and I had to get the team focused. I got the team focused by telling them the game strategy and the things we needed to work on. The strategy of the game was to focus on getting shots and getting the mids back. At practice, we worked on a 3 person passing drill which I saw during the game! Well from what I saw we played a terrific tournament!Loudoun Magichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09111082135548092987noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14779045.post-42199308668674474792007-10-04T16:58:00.000-04:002007-10-04T17:14:19.706-04:00Megan as Captain2 weeks ago I was a captain. I learned that the captains don't do very much except for to tell our team mates to get back on the field after waterbreaks at practice. I think that when we're captain, we have to be better leaders and find other things to do. Maybe as captains we could tell the coaches what we think that the team needs to work on, and then suggest a drill to do at practice. That's what I learned about being a captain.Loudoun Magichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09111082135548092987noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14779045.post-60522624713668755912007-09-26T08:44:00.001-04:002007-09-26T19:44:11.008-04:00Katie & Polly as Captains

This past week we played against the Vienna Lighting team and Polly and I were captains. After having some fun, laughter, and even some singing at Froots, the girls walked around to several of the eating establishments to hand out sponsorship information to the managers/business owners. Their smiles and charisma were well received in each of the establishments. Hopefully we will soon enjoy the “froots” of their labor. The girls are excited about their next “business” adventure to take place on Saturday, September 29.Loudoun Magichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09111082135548092987noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14779045.post-63261733980981038142007-09-14T20:15:00.000-04:002007-09-14T20:17:56.471-04:00Loudoun Soccer 95 G White vs Epic HammersField Reporter: Kylie F

On Sunday September 9th Loudoun Soccer 95 G White (Loudoun Magic) played the Epic Hammers. Tryouts run from 6pm to 8pm and players are encouraged to attend all three tryout sessions.

The current field schedule is:

U12 Girls May 31 Legacy Large
(born 8/1/95 – 7/31/96) June 2 Evergreen Mills
June 3 Simpson #2

Please check the Loudoun Soccer website (http://www.loudounsoccer.com/LSC/index_E.html) throughout the week as the schedule is subject to change. A little food for thought:

We anticipate a fairly large group for tryouts, so arrive at the field no later than 5:45 to register. The players will be given numbered pinnies, which they’ll be expected to return at the end of each session.

Loudoun Soccer tryouts are open to anyone in the age group. To help the coaches remain as objective as possible, players are not to wear articles of clothing that identify them with a current travel team. No uniform jerseys, shorts, socks, practice jerseys, or warmups. Also players should not bring their “travel bags” – they should just bring a ball and water.

The more we see the players, but better we can do at placing them appropriately, so please attend all three tryouts. If a player is injured or there’s some kind of vacation conflict, please let one of the coaches or volunteers know during the sign-in process.

All current players are required to attend tryouts, as all rosters spots on each team are open for competition. Players on current teams may be placed on a higher or lower team based on their ability and performance at tryouts.

We anticipate the addition of a D team to the age group, coached by Peter Walther. The addition of a 4th team is contingent upon the number of suitable players we see trying out.

Due to Loudoun Soccer policy, we are unable to make player notifications until immediately after our last ODSL game, which is currently scheduled for June 10. (This policy is new since last year.) If this causes a hardship for someone based on vacation plans, etc. please contact your coach to make other arrangements.

Good luck!

Coach Ed & Jeff
Loudoun Magichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09111082135548092987noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14779045.post-59035962798245245122007-05-21T11:21:00.001-04:002007-05-21T11:21:52.362-04:00Lightning vs Magic May 6thSunday’s game-Lightning vs Magic

The score to our last game was 2 to 1. Megan Windland scored our only goal. The team played good but I think we could have beaten them. The other team was beating us to the ball. We also need to take some more shots on goal, but the shots that we did get on goal were very nice shots. I know it was a little bit harder to get a shot off against that team because they had three defenders. We played good in the first half, but in the second half we started to slow down a bit and they were winning most of the loose balls. At the very end of the game we started to pick up the pace a little bit more. Our passing and ball skills were very good. I think the thing we need to work on the most is taking the shot earlier.

By Jessie HLoudoun Magichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09111082135548092987noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14779045.post-48195542187099655762007-05-21T11:20:00.000-04:002007-05-21T11:21:22.043-04:00Captain JannaDear Loudoun Magic,

Being captain was a great experience. I learned that it is good to step up and be a leader of the team every once in a while. It is also a great time to give constructive criticism and share your ideas about improving the team’s playing. It is like being the assistant coach and helping the team at practices and at games. As, captain, you have more responsibilities. Some include leading in drills and stretches, making sure everyone is attentive to both coaches, and reflecting on the games and how we played. While being captain your teammates look up to you for leadership and help when it is needed. Being new on the team and having the role of being captain was a great way for me to get to know my teammates better! This week being captain was an honor. I knew I had to play my hardest and be a good role model for my teammates to look up too. This past weekend being captain was a great experience for me and a lot of fun!

Loudoun Magichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09111082135548092987noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14779045.post-36544267700901638892007-04-16T06:53:00.001-04:002007-04-16T06:53:54.451-04:00Spring Break GameField reporter Maddie B

Hi Everybody!

Sorry I'm late on the right-up. But I think everyone did a great job, but there is a few things we need to work on. I think our most major problem was getting open. On throw-ins and goalkicks, we need to check more and give support. Also, we need to get in front of our opponents quicker so we can receive the ball and run less hills! Some of the players on our team had to play different positions because we didn't have all our players. Those people did a really great job at different positions. Keep it up! Also, congrats to Megan W. and Cate for earning the captian spot. See you at practice on Monday.Loudoun Magichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09111082135548092987noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14779045.post-84939987937889888412007-04-10T07:49:00.000-04:002007-04-10T07:50:13.672-04:00Being captain...I know Erin and I have had a great experience being Magic’s captains. Here are a few words about what we learned, and what it was like being a captain.

Being captain gives you a chance to see through the coaches eyes (in a way). It takes A LOT of patience and hard work to make the other girls on the team listen and respect you. Although captains have a lot of control, THEY need to respect their team mates too. Leading the team means that we have to make sure the other girls don’t goof around, and stay on task. We have to be good role models by showing our skills, respecting the coaches, demonstrating good behavior, and participating in all the drills. Now, for the positive things about being a captain. It gives you a chance to get to know your team mates better than you already do. When you get picked to be a captain, you know that you played well in a game or a practice. It gives you honor and dignity when you’re picked to lead the team. I’m glad that I was picked for captain, and when you get your chance, I bet you’ll love it too!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)

By Elizabeth E.Loudoun Magichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09111082135548092987noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14779045.post-49019268516164866772007-04-03T09:00:00.000-04:002007-04-03T09:01:07.351-04:00March Madness Soccer Tournament, 24/25 March 2007By Erin Windland

The Loudoun Magic traveled to our first soccer tournament in Maryland. We just switched from indoor soccer to outdoor soccer. We had one outdoor practice before our tournament. We did a couple things well in this tournament. We we didn't drive into the defender; we passed the ball to get past the defender. Also we talked to each other during the game, and we used our back pass a lot. A couple things we need to work on are getting to the ball and getting in front of it. Also we need to make sure we play our best defense when the ball is down by our goal, so our goalie doesn't get hurt, and we need to go to the ball first and win loose balls. We need to take balls out of our penalty box faster. We also need to take more shots.

The teams we played were the Cleveland Blues, the MSC Shamrocks, and the Arlington Flame.

Jessie H. scored our only goal of the tournament with an assist from Elizabeth. I think we had an okay tournament, but we can do better. Looking at the bright side ,we improved from last seasonLoudoun Magichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09111082135548092987noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14779045.post-1154033160030948862007-03-08T16:46:00.000-05:002007-03-09T13:20:39.866-05:00Sponsors
Many thanks to our many generous and supportive Sponsors. The team’s 6-1-1 season record is a tribute to their work ethic, competitiveness, and swanky play that began way back during the hot summer months. The girls gelled quickly despite a 50% roster turnover from last season. We had a great bunch of kids who worked hard, played their butts off, and somehow found a way to win. GREAT JOB!
November 18-19, Magic participated in the Hunt Country Classic. Although the team finished 0-2-1, we played three very close, competitive games. Thanks to Nikki and Gracie for joining us as guests. We also got a chance to use players in unfamiliar positions to make the tournament a learning experience, so all in all, I’d say we had a successful event.
The girls are taking some time off over the holidays. 2007 gets kicked off with a dose of speed & agility training, plus our winter training and indoor league. Coaches and trainers are busily preparing for player evaluations. Meetings with parents/players will be held in conjunction with our indoor training and game schedule. Look for training information, plus information on the big team party shortly.
Happy Holidays to everyone in the Magic family.
Ed Fleming
Head Coach, Loudoun Magic
Loudoun Magichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09111082135548092987noreply@blogger.com
