The ruling will go into effect on July 15 unless we act now and urge Congress to rescue Internet radio:

Rescue Internet Radio: Take Action Now

After intense lobbying from the recording industry, the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) ignored a massive public outcry and ruled to dramatically increase the rates webcasters must pay every time they stream a song.

These draconian rules will shut down many noncommercial and independent Internet radio outlets, leaving the Web with the same cookie-cutter music formats that have destroyed commercial broadcast radio.

Independent musicians, independent labels, webcasters, media reformers and thousands of Internet radio listeners have joined forces with members of Congress to reverse this bad decision. The bipartisan "Internet Radio Equality Act of 2007" has been introduced in the House by Reps. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) and Donald Manzullo (R-Ill.) and in the Senate by Sens. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Sam Brownback (R-Kan.). The legislation would reverse the CRB decision in favor of a balanced structure that supports artists without putting webcasters out of business.

Rescue Internet Radio: Support the Internet Radio Equality Act

Musicians must be compensated for their work. But the new regulations would silence many outlets that play independent artists and musical genres that just can't be found on the radio dial. And nonprofit NPR, Pacifica and community radio stations would be forced to take down most of their online musical programming for fear of unmanageable royalty fees.

The bills introduced in the House and Senate would allow artists and musicians to thrive on Internet radio. Help pass the "Internet Radio Equality Act of 2007" by telling all your friends to take action now:

Tell Your Friends to Help Rescue Internet Radio

Industry-wide consolidation has destroyed musical diversity on commercial broadcast radio. We must not let this happen to the Internet.

This is really important!!!! Don't let them control what we want to listen to!!

Neshanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13256217711566414480noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14757317.post-1175204727789737592007-03-29T15:41:00.001-07:002007-04-11T23:25:49.553-07:00New Blog!So I'm working with Sleepy Wilson (KCSB) on a new and audio blog. Her voice is absolutely beautiful and she is the daughter of Joao and Astrud Gilberto...so you know she has gotta be dope. Strongly influenced by her famous parents, she began singing at an early age and initially worked with artists such as Arto Lindsay and Towa Tei (of Dee Lite fame). She dropped her first solo album, Tanto Tempo in 2000, and to date, it has become Brasil's most successful musical exports since the 1960's. Initially I was going to post only 2 tracks from Tanto Tempo, but it is such a good album that I decided to post 3 of my favorite tracks. The first track, Samba da Benção is sweet to your ears - it is the kind of song you'd want to wake up to in the morning and lounge around all day to. The second track, August Day Song is a little more uptempo but still has Bebel's signature soft hooks and relaxing vibe. The third track, Lonely is a little darker than the other two - the production is simple, but I think that is what gives the song its charm. I like how the background vocals fade in and out of the track, giving it a colder and more solitary feel than the other tracks.

Download:
Bebel Gilberto - Céu Distante(DJ Spinna Mix)
From Bebel Gilberto Remixed Six Degree Records: 2005

I love DJ Spinna as much as I love Bebel Gilberto, so you can imagine how happy I was when I heard his remix of Céu Distante. The group is composed of 3 emcees: Dogge Doggelito (Douglas Léon), and two brothers, Salla and Chepe. They all have roots in Latin America (Venezuela and Chile), hence the name of the group.

In 1994 they released Välkommen till förorten (Welcome to the Suburb), the first rap album entirely in Swedish. They later started their own Swedish hip hop label, Red Line Records.

A lot of their songs are in Rinkeby Swedish, a "multiethnolect language" common in areas comprised of monstly Swedish immigrants. It's basically Swedish with loanwords from Turkish, Syriac, Spanish, Farsi, Arabic and a few other languages.

The first track I am posting is off of a compillation called Svenska Hip Hop Hits 90-00. Unfortunately I don't know the name of the song but it is one of my favorite songs by the Latin Kings. I randomly came across it about 3 years ago, when i was first getting into a lot of international hip hop. The beat is solid - catchy and mellow and the chorus flows really well with the rap. A lot of their songs are reggae influenced, and you hear a slight touch of it in this song about 4:20 into the song. The second song, De e knas off of their album Mitt Kvarter is simple - the beat kinda has an early 90's feel and is equally as good as the first. (ps-go to their website and check out shows by mr. glass, sleepy wilson, and sammy toyon). While preparing for the show I did a lot of research on German Hip Hop and found a bunch of music from an emcee named Chima from Frankfurt, Germany. Originally part of a crew called the Brothers Keepers, Chima has made quite a name for himself in the German Hip Hop sector, releasing his first solo album in 2003 and touring with artists such as Saul Williams.

The two MP3's that I am posting are from his 2002 he release "Reine Glaubenssache" (roughly translated into 'a thing of pure faith') on EMI records. From what I could decipher (by way of the google translation machine) His music deals highly with the afro German experience in a postwar Germany* (although I am not sure of the content of these two songs in particular). This is one of those times I'm gonna have to say just listen to the music for the overall feel..(unless you know German and you can tell me what he is saying).

*Germany is 4th largest market for hip hop after the U.S, U.K. and France. This is due largely in part to the appropriation of hip hop by the large Afro-German population in Frankfurt and Berlin. Because it is a relatively young, American art form, it sometimes blows my mind to see the extent to which hip hop has rapidly spread across the world. My focus for my first post on this subject is Hip Hop from Spain. As far as hip hop in Europe is concerned, I feel Spanish Hip hop is seriously underrated - and often overshadowed by music from France, the UK, Germany and the Netherlands.

Download:
Tremendo - Se Lo Que Buscas
Tremendo - Se Llevarte
From Vidalogia (CD) De Palo Records: 2004

The first artist I am featuring is Tremendo who is from my favorite city in Spain - Barcelona. My friend Robin hooked me up with this CD after he took a trip to Barcelona earlier this year. The production on Se lo que buscas and Se llevarte is mellow and reminds me somewhat of something 9th wonder would put out. Tremendo jumps on the neo soul vibe with his hooks and keeps a consistent flow throughout both tracks. Check out how both songs switch up after the short intros on each track.

Download:
Gumersindo Ela - Yemaya y Oshum
From Laboratorio de Hip Hop (CD) Universal Music Spain:2003

Gumersindo Ela is a female vocalist and emcee from Spain who I cannot find any info about online! Her song Yemaya y Oshun is off of a 2x CD compilation called Laboratorio de Hip Hop that I picked up while I was living in Granada a couple of years ago. I decided to post this track because I think it is especially nice to see females holding it down for hip hop in Spain. Yemaya y Oshun starts off with a soft hook and smooth baseline but switches up into a rap about 30 seconds into the song. Honestly, I feel this is one of the slight downfalls of the song - I would have preferred a little smoother of a transition from the guitar riffs to rap. Nevertheless, Gumersindo Ela manages to pull the song together nicely a couple of verses later. One thing I really love about her is her accent. I think she may be from Andalucia or Madrid? If anyone has any information lemme know!

Download:
Solo Los Solo - Supra BBoy 2015
Souchi f/Morodo - Noches de Humo
From Hip Hop Solo En Espanol V.2 (x2 CD) Tempo Music: 2002

The last two songs I've decided to post are from a compilation that I picked up in Granada called Hip Hop Solo en Espanol Vol. 2. I bought the compilation because I saw it had some songs from Solo Los Solo, a group that I had heard a lot of good things about. If you listen to Supra Bboy 2015 you'll see that they definitely don't disappoint. The production kind of reminds me of a more soulfull version of the song Virus by Del. Check out the trumpet break that comes in about 4 minutes into the song! The 2nd track, also found on Laboratorio de Hip Hop is by Souchi and features a Spanish hip hop/reggae artist named Morodo on the hooks. This is a laid back song that has a classic hip hop feel. Souchi and Morodo's vocal tones and individual styles complement eachother really well which adds to the overall smoothness of the song. Enjoy!
Neshanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13256217711566414480noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14757317.post-1126069414331559072005-09-06T22:00:00.000-07:002005-09-06T22:05:26.360-07:00Files up<p align-"left">Files are up! After sitting through countless movies as a kid, I've definitely come to appreciate "filmy" Indian music - especially when its from the late 60's & 70's. Some of the best music I've ever heard has come from these soundtracks and to prove my point I'm posting two MP3's from the Bollywood Breaks compilation, compiled by DJ's Harv and Suni aka Sutrasonic. Released in 2001 on Outcaste Records (home to artists such as Nitin Sawhney and DJ's Badmarsh & Shri) , the compilation is made up of 8 songs from Bollywood Movies released in the 70's. The tracks were mastered for sampling purposes, but I think they stand fine on their own.

In the Garden and Lovers Paradise are a good representation of the overall vibe of the sampler. The soft female vocals and the drum breaks on In the Garden give this song more of a traditional feel, but the sitar and flute breaks that come in about 3 minutes into the song are what really switch up a beat that could otherwise get redundant. I chose Lover's Paradise because it reminds me of those bollywood warehouse scenes where two bellbottemed desi gangsters are battling it out over the hot vixen woman who ends up taking them both for a ride. Check out the funky flute riffs and the female vocals laced on this track.
Neshanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13256217711566414480noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14757317.post-1122152382969556062005-07-23T13:57:00.000-07:002005-08-14T02:20:19.616-07:00The Beginning..
Welcome to WAXPOETICS. This is an Audioblog I am setting up so I can share music with my friends and whoever else happens to stumple upon this site.
