Do we offend Christians, or non-Christians in our ministry? That is the choice put forth in Steve Benke's theology of the tension of offense. I would suggest that the choice has been already made, that God's Law and his Gospel offends the old Adam of all people.
As many are prone to say these days, What Would Jesus Do? Jesus offended those that did not believe in him, Daniel Bergquisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13657831105245014506noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14708322.post-32664590132950726432007-08-26T20:58:00.000-05:002007-08-26T21:25:00.148-05:00And he's off! After a bit of a delay, my brother is finally in basic training.
At my mother's suggestion, I got him a small Bible. Nothing quite the thing I was looking for, but a "mere book" works. And that is the remarkable thing about the Bible, the fact that it's a "mere book." The Word of God is not brought to us by some nebulous spiritual experience but rather by ink impressed onto bound paper- matter, Daniel Bergquisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13657831105245014506noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14708322.post-37449083486447967882007-08-13T23:46:00.000-05:002007-08-14T00:08:32.760-05:00Gifts for a newbie soldier? In a little over a week my brother is shipping off to Army basic training. What would be an appropriate gift would be?
Though I'm open to other ideas, if at all possible I would like to have it be an item of tradition and symbolism, as an engagement ring is to an engagement or pilot's wings are to a pilot. Also, it needs to be something that I can have in hand by the end of the week.

The service concluded with something that was entirely new to me. The following hymn was sung to celebrate the beginning of our liturgical fast as the Alleluia banner was removed from the sanctuary.
Alleluia, song of sweetness,Voice of joy that cannot die
Alleluia is the anthem Ever dear to choirs on high

Last weekend I got my bassoon back from the shop. I haven't had it in for repairs since I've had it (about five and a half years). As you can see, it's all nice and shiny. Perhaps it would help if I stuck around on the weekends more often but that's a side topic. Although I have moved several times throughout my life, the churches that my family attended were rather obvious with a father as a pastor. Thus I have no idea how to evaluate churches once a list has been narrowed down toDaniel Bergquisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13657831105245014506noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14708322.post-1159159800406453502006-09-24T23:48:00.000-05:002006-09-24T23:50:00.420-05:00A Weird Al presentationLadies and gentlemen, I present my new theme song.Daniel Bergquisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13657831105245014506noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14708322.post-1158465757511143092006-09-16T22:38:00.000-05:002006-09-17T10:02:11.903-05:00Has it really been that long?I do apologize for not posting in a long time. I now work for a contracting company. This whole idea of a contracting company was new to me. Basically it means I'm paid by and get benefits from one but actually do work for another. After going out for some Chinese to celebrate the news mentioned in the previous post, I thanked my parents for dinner. My dad lost no time and said, in an "about time" sort of voice, "Thanks for getting a job."

I'm not going to go into details at the moment, but I just was notified that tomorrow an offer letter will be sent in the mail. Now this seems like a good thing. Until, that is, I realize that this means instead of a tired, grouchy sister returning I will have an excited, hyper sister returning. Gee, lucky me......

On the other hand, I know of two other people in my field who's job searches lasted for over a year. One of them searched for over a year and a half, gave up, and joined the Peace Corps. Still, even after putting that into perspective, one can't help feeling like this, which really is the whole reason for writing this post anyway.

I didn't know it myself, but it just might be true. Where do I get my opium? Well, acorrding to this article my body makes it.
It looks like it is possible that a person's "thirst for knowlege" may be the result of the brain's craving of opium-like chemicals that are released as a reward. Interesting if true... ...it would explain a lot.....Daniel Bergquisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13657831105245014506noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14708322.post-1150258696992732942006-06-13T23:01:00.000-05:002006-06-13T23:18:17.010-05:00From the "He's going to feel that one in the morning" departmentI never would have thought it was possible to survive a decapitation. That is until I saw this boy named Ricky on TV. How did he survive? Well, he suffered a rare, and usually fatal, form of decapitation known as "internal decapitation." From what I can gather, this means that while his head was not detached from his body, his skull and ligaments holding the skull to his neck were. All that was Daniel Bergquisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13657831105245014506noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14708322.post-1150179370666392102006-06-13T00:29:00.000-05:002006-06-13T01:18:38.873-05:00Data crunching in the key of C#While searching for a job I have noticed that there are quite a few job openings involving the C# programming language and the .NET platform-- both from Microsoft. It truly is a fantastic platform to work with. Of course Macs have their drawbacks. If one is a heavy gamer, then you would want to stick to running Windows. Building a server? Try Linux or BSD instead. Use the tool that best fits the job. The reason why I probably come across as a big time Mac fan is that I thinkDaniel Bergquisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13657831105245014506noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14708322.post-1148853234032031222006-05-28T16:28:00.000-05:002006-05-30T13:52:09.773-05:00TSM rocket launch May 06Yesterday I once again attended a Tripoli Southern Minnesota rocket launch.
