Your team is demotivated. What do you do?”

I have asked this question a thousand times, when selecting members for my EB, when recruiting new members and sometimes to myself. More often than not, I end up with another question as a response to this:

“Why am I in AIESEC?”

If I just consider my current scenario, I have many reasons to justify my quitting the organization:

My friends complain that I don’t have enough time for them

My parents complain that I am not spending time with them

One of my best friends, and chief motivators, quit AIESEC less than a month ago

My study schedule is going to be whacked because of AIESEC commitments

I don’t have enough time for my freelance graphics gig

The current situation of the Local Committee is less than ideal; with losses, resigning members and angry stakeholders

Six valid reasons for me reconsider my staying in AIESEC. Six indicators that I should get out before things get really messed up.

Yet I’m still here, fighting the odds, taking chances, motivating others to move forward.

An AIESEC alumnus once told me:

“The position of Local Committee President is the loneliest leadership position you can get in AIESEC”

Fortunately for me, he told me this after I got elected.

And his words have proven true so far. This is definitely a position you cannot professionally relate with any other AIESEC member. To be held accountable for a Local Committee’s mere existence is in itself such a staggering responsibility that the rest of your “duties” per se kind of blur in to the background.

So the question does a 180 and comes back in to my face:

Why am I in AIESEC?

I guess the answer is simple. To prove that it can be done. To show others that against the odds, against people’s expectations, you can rise.

Where else would I get an opportunity like this?

To convince myself and a team of six others to lead a community of 30 (and growing) people in to achieving their potential and from thereon making an impact around them and within them.

Of all my friends, the truest ones are those who believe in what I’m doing and are sticking by me. My folks complain about me not spending time with them; but in the little time that we do spend together, they tell me that they’re seeing an enormous growth in me. I promised my friend that I’d try my best to remove the obstacles that made her resign. There are several reasons why - the foremost is being able to share my culture as being from Pakistan. I've met members from both LCs in Jordan (Amman and Irbid) - and everytime I answer a question about Pakistan, Karachi, the language, the trends, education..I feel more and more proud of being a Pakistani.

The second element is having been part of an expansion country. For me to be able to connect with members and share my experiences in an expansion country is extremely exciting. The passion that exists within members who want to learn, strive to achieve the best for AIESEC in Jordan reminds me somewhat of AIESEC Pakistan's first year; however it would be unfair to call it similar because of different realities.

To be able to reflect back and remind members of their place in history as being the first generation of AIESEC members and leaders in the country, talk about challenges and how to overcome these, and just connect over the various elements of AIESEC that bind the network together is what has made my four days here so great.

Everyday, we are living an experience that brings us closer to achieving a vision that we have set for ourselves personally, and for the AIESEC entity that we work with.

For those of you who are confused about where your AIESEC experience will take you - there are several roads, several of which you may never consider, several which you are unsure of, and perhaps only one which is the right one for you. I am living this experience with the innate knowledge that this is the right one for me - and I hope and dream to one day seeing more of you embark on this experience and feel the joy of representing your culture and AIESEC country in this way.

Love from Amman,
Saba

me with my amazing MCe team!
(left to right: Saba - MCVP ER and F, Momani, MCVP PD and X, Oksana - MCP)

sabanoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14628999.post-59027744346411953912007-05-18T22:21:00.001+05:002007-05-18T22:21:20.338+05:00Team CDC Intro from GBM!

After the extremely short video at AGM 2007, we proudly present,

.:: The Team CDC Intro Video ::.

Note: No AIESECers were harmed in the making of this video.

wy tsihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14477510271507128106noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14628999.post-37941558792468802732007-05-06T15:33:00.000+05:002007-05-06T15:35:25.013+05:00
Make way for new batch of AIESECers!!

After deliberations that have run longer than expected, we are proud to announce the new AIESECers, recruited from IBA:

Incoming Exchange - Corporate Sector
Ozair Bilgrami
Mohsin Khan
Ahmed Rauf

Incoming Exchange - Development Sector
Romessa Mirza
Arsalan
Rabayl Manzoor

Outgoing Exchange
Saher Shehzad
Sarwar Hasan
Haider Raza

External Relations
Ali Afzaal
Fayez Jangda
Khurram Merchant

People Development
Jamil-ur-Rehman
Nida

You can catch them at the next GBM - which is just around the corner!

wy tsihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14477510271507128106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14628999.post-49340267674503330442007-04-29T23:22:00.000+05:002007-04-29T23:37:06.796+05:00Induction!
The EB 07-08 finished interviews yesterday for new members and now very soon we will have some extremely bright, motivated and energetic individuals working with us. Every one of those 'members' made a difference in their own little but significant way. Each of them deserves the credit for it. This post has been long due. I write this with a lot of pride on behalf of every person that made this happen. I also write this with the gratefulness for having had the honour to be there where it happened. Let me describe some scenes from IPM 2007.

Global legislation takes place towards the end of IPM. One of the most inspiring and powerful moments before that is the elections for President of AIESEC International. It is also a moment of pride for those countries that have earned the right to make this decision.
Below you see the ballot for PAI voting in the hands of one such country. But it wasn't Pakistan. Not till then.

This was also a moment where we captured a rare occassion. A couple of MCPs that did not have a vote but still had a feeling of pride much larger - Because they had with them their successors, who would be able to have that ballot in their hand. Captured, you see myself and Gasper (MCP of AIESEC in Tanzania), and Nida and Stanley (MCPe of AIESEC in Tanzania) - Yes, there is much to smile about!

And then finally, the moment arrived. After a legislative session that lasted over 9 hours, it was time for global plenary to decide whether a country had earned the right to sit among them as full members. The membership subcommittee (that evaluates if membership criteria had been met) gave its recommendation, the MCP from the partner country AIESEC in India (Rishabh), spoke for the motion...

And the MCP elect of Pakistan said a few words...

And then like magic, everything transformed. AIESEC in Pakistan was given a unanimous vote to join the association.

And the celebrations began!

But what now...? So those people that got us here played their part. What is it that every member of AIESEC in Pakistan today going to do that is going to be at par with that achievement?

Everyone has their own answer to this, but for me it's quite simple: There's more to be done. Much more. Becoming a full member is a stepping stone, but there are more such steps that need to be created. And it will not be any easier. Every 'member' will have to play their own little but significant part for us to be able to build that next stone and many more will have to work even harder for us to climb it. Yet, in our everyday work, we often forget the contribution that our actions are making to the organization at large and how that adds to the impact each of us is having on ourselves and on the societies at large.

The year has started. You have all the tools that you need in order to be able to do a great job. All you need to do is exhibit commitment. You don't need people to tell you what to do or how to do it. The members that got us here certainly did a decent job, not having those people. The only difference is that now, you are ABLE to be able to find that information in order to maximize your learning, contribution and experience. But you see, at the end of the day, it is each of you that needs to drive their own experience - no one else will.
