This probably make more financial sense. It also means we'll get the whole book without the danger of the second volume never seeing the light of day!

They've also promised that no editing will be done to make it fit one volume ... which is good news too.

Now roll on spring 2010...

Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10650948933327392820noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14540680.post-9933251138337049742009-06-28T10:45:00.005Z2009-06-28T15:37:49.847ZMore Beef Art
As you're probably already aware the Radar Station has the largest collection of images of Don's artwork on the web and we continue to add to it whenever we can. As we're obsessives we don't want to miss out on the other doodles and sketches of his that turn up all over the place so we've started trying to capture these all in one place too.

Take a look at the Pictures, photos, bits & bobs page and check the Assorted sketches by Don section which includes a great piece of grafitti on a wall of the Armadillo as well as photos of Don displaying pages from his sketchbook. If you know of any others please let us know.

One of the myths surrounding Don has been his supposed early training with a sculptor called Agostinho Rodrigues. Little is known about what really happened but I've put together an article that covers everything we do know - read it here: Don Vliet and Agostinho Rodrigues

Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10650948933327392820noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14540680.post-47451264530463412572009-06-09T19:34:00.005Z2009-06-09T20:05:16.612ZFollow beefheart.com on TwitterYou can now follow beefheart.com on Twitter and get all of our Up Sifter updates and anything else Beefheart-related which we decide to shunt your way. You can now get exact copies of the original Safe As Milk and Mirror Man vinyl albums but as compact discs. These are exquisite ... you even get a mini version of the SAM bumper sticker and MM comes complete with the gatefold die-cut shattered mirror effect cover.

Although the packaging replicates the original album the tracks on them are the remastered versions with the extra songs that were released in 1999.- so the sound quality is excellent. In fact, SAM sounds even better than the 1999 copy I have.

These are available individually but they can be bought together as part of a 'promo' package. With this you get the two albums and a chunky box to put them in. The box is printed to look like a fat copy of Safe As Milk and is constructed like the Grow Fins box.

The fact that this box is big enough to hold four or five of these mini albums makes me wonder if there's plans to issue some more ... but which other Beefheart albums does BMG Japan have the rights to?

Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10650948933327392820noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14540680.post-35466743595430729842009-05-23T16:15:00.002Z2009-05-23T16:50:34.743Z
Chrome Dreams have just released Captain Beefheart’s Jukebox, a collection of songs (mainly blues) that have been an influence to Don and the Magic Band – read our review of it. The present owner was aware of the house's history and kind enough to take this picture and send it to me.

The house was built on the middle lot of three adjoining lots that was part of the original property. The present owner is building a new 3-story home down and to the right of the original house. He's living in the original house with his wife and showed us around. Even the publicity material for the album at PJ Harvey's MySpace page flags the Beefheart connection.

In a video at Island Records website John and Polly can be heard talking about their musical influences. Polly explains how she first came to appreciate Captain Beefheart:

I'd heard Beefheart when I was really young through my father and my mother ... they had all of Beefheart's work, but when I was a child it just used to make me feel ill. I didn't understand it. And then when I met John when I was sixteen / seventeen he introduced me to many things, one of which was re-introducing me to Captain Beefheart, and he gave me a cassette of Shiny Beast which I still have.

Lowside of the Road

An extract from Barney Hoskins' new biography of Tom Waits has appeared at The Quietus. It deals with the change in Waits' music which happened at the time of his marriage to Kathleen Brennan, and Swordfishtrombones the album which resulted. Here Hoskins skates over the vexed question of Captain Beefheart's influence on Waits:

Waits has even claimed he'd never really listened to Captain Beefheart before meeting Kathleen – that, despite being signed by Beefheart's manager Herb Cohen and supporting the Captain's mentor Frank Zappa on tour, he was oblivious to the gruff-voiced Dadaist genius born Don Van Vliet. Where the bruising 'Heartattack and Vine' hinted at Beefheart's influence, Waits' new songs made the debt clearer still.

Whether or not it was Kathleen who turned her husband on to Beefheart matters less than the fact that she was the catalyst for change. "It was certainly not the first time that a relationship with a strong and well-organized woman has had that kind of effect on an artist's life," says Mike Melvoin, keyboard player on The Heart of Saturday Night (1974) and Nighthawks at the Diner (1975). But Melvoin also believes Brennan "put a stake through the heart of various things" in order to free Waits from his past.

Barney Hoskyns' Lowside of the Road: A Life of Tom Waits is out now, published by Faber & Faber

How To Be

Back in August I wrote about the inclusion of Clear Spot on the soundtrack for the British indie film How To Be. The soundtrack album has now been announced and is available for pre-order through Dreamboat Records.

The film itself will be showing at a few screenings in the US leading up to a wider release on IFC Festival Direct. It's now no longer going to be published this June.

Proper Records have not taken the decision lightly. But as this was their first foray into the world of book publishing they have now realised that a book cannot be turned around as quickly as a CD and marketed effectively in that short time. Fast 'N' Bulbous hope to do all of the gigs.

While Gary is undoubtedly the star soloist of the band, there are a lot of other good reasons to see Fast 'N' Bulbous: the arrangements, the many other formidable musicians in the band, who are quite well-known and well-regarded in their own right, and the great music of Captain Beefheart. He was seventy years old.

Art Tripp, one of the few other musicians to have played with both Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa, sent the following message:

I hardly know what to say about the demise of the great Jimmy Carl Black. I Emailed Roy Estrada that the world just won't seem the same without The Indian. He was one of those rare guys who lit up the whole room when he walked in. When you met Jim you liked him; and he was your friend for life. Jim was basically a good ole Texas boy with a little flower power mixed in. He was an open book to a fault, and was quick with his praise of others. I had some of the best times of my life around Jimmy Carl Black, all the while learning a little bit about rock n roll drumming. When we spoke on the phone a couple of weeks ago, I had a feeling that would be the last time. I'm very grateful that I had that opportunity.

Art Tripp

The benefit concert planned for Sunday 9th November in London will go ahead, as will another benefit celebration in California on 7th December.

There is a brief biography of Jimmy at his website and two recent interviews with Jimmy appear at The Idiot Bastard's website, here and here. Three European concerts of Captain Beefheart compositions are so far listed for March - in Holland, Czech Republic and France. There will be more news of that tour later I'm sure.

Gary recently mentioned at his blog that the only punk/new wave band checked by Captain Beefheart/Don Van Vliet as being any good was Throbbing Gristle, which was news to me.

I soon found an interview with Genesis P Orridge in which Genesis placed Don Van Vliet alongside Aleister Crowley, William Burroughs, Brion Gysin, and Brian Jones in his pantheon, so I asked Gary about this mutual admiration.

Gary told me that someone came up to The Magic Band at York University during their soundcheck in November 1980 and asked Don if he rated any of the punk or new wave groups. He scoffed at them all (this was the period of "case of the punks" and Don's general derisive attitude toward the whole thing--ie "the new wave is just an old Toni" (a "toni" was a kind of permanent wave hair application goo for women) but then said the only group he liked and respected was Throbbing Gristle.

Genesis later told Gary that he had heard from someone close to the band that Don used to paint listening to Throbbing Gristle's Second Annual Report.

Now for the plug. I knew from the start I wanted to use Captain Beefheart - I love his raw child-like (yet extremely sophisticated) quality. In terms of the score, this was a development of the songs that Art plays in the film. We had this integral idea to both kind of mock the serious sincerity of his lyrics but also to show that within his quite simple songs there is actually a very hooky and effective tune and dynamic - there is masses of potential there!

There is a trailer for the film at the How To Be website.

Video

The long-awaited video of April's 'Beefheart Night at The Knit' has now appeared as a vidcast at Dusty Wright's Culture Catch. Tom's creative life has been shaped by a great many artists, he says, including Don Van Vliet. To be fair, Tom Waits has consistently applauded Don's work, sometimes quite eloquently. In an interview for The Observer in 2005 he said this about 'Trout Mask Replica'.

The roughest diamond in the mine, his musical inventions are made of bone and mud. Enter the strange matrix of his mind and lose yours. This is indispensable for the serious listener. An expedition into the centre of the earth, this is the high jump record that'll never be beat, it's a merlot reduction sauce. He takes da bait. Dante doing the buck and wing at a Skip James suku jump. Drink once and thirst no more.

Alison Mosshart of The Kills waxes not quite so eloquent about Captain Beefheart in her interview for The Independent earlier this month. Her favourite album is 'Ice Cream For Crow' and she would love to perform with Don Van Vliet, him just talking and talking down the microphone the way he does, real slow and cool.

The actor Billy Bob Thornton is a bit of a music intellectual, according to an article by Matthew Lewis at Reuters. Plugging his band The Boxmasters album and tour, Billy Bob tops all recent celebrity Beefheart name droppers. Not only do his favorite artists include Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart, but he is phone friends with Don Van Vliet.

Very few people talk to him, and I got the opportunity to become friends with him over the phone, said Thornton.

derek@beefheart.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16733022964216474196noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14540680.post-24770742371241709652008-06-18T20:35:00.003Z2008-07-23T17:59:57.468ZIt Comes To You In A Plain Brown Wrapper - July releaseIt Comes To You In A Plain Brown Wrapper was intended to be the name of the second Captain Beefheart album, a double album recorded late in 1967. This album never saw the light of day, which has given rise to not a little speculation and discussion among fans of Captain Beefheart.

Tracks from the original sessions have been used on several re-release and compilation albums, but until now no record company has attempted to reconstruct It Comes To You In A Plain Brown Wrapper as an album in its own right.

On July 22nd, Sundazed Records will do just that, when they release a Captain Beefheart double album called It Comes To You In A Plain Brown Wrapper featuring what they say is, "a wealth of unedited takes never before on vinyl".

There are thirteen tracks, including two takes of Moody Liz of which one doesn't seem to have been released before. John French has written the sleeve notes and Cal Schenkel has designed the cover (which is presently under wraps).

Sundazed Records has an enviable reputation for their catalogue of re-releases, but this seems to be the first time that they have ventured into the business of reconstructing an album which was never released. It is available only as a download.

Rhino Hi-Five: Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band is a compilation of five tracks recorded between 1969 and 1978. It includes two live cuts and what Rhino describe as a remastered LP version of the song Bat Chain Puller.

Bat Chain Puller was remastered to its sonic advantage for Virgin/EMI's 2006 Captain Beefheart re-release CDs. The live tracks are from Rhino's limited edition Beefheart CD, My Father's Place. The other two tracks are taken from Trout Mask Replica and Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller).

As all of these tracks are already issued on vinyl and/or CD, some may wonder whether the "lossy" WMA file format of Rhino's album is the most suitable on which to listen to this material.

This curiosity is available for money at Rhino's Digital Store but in some territories it can be downloaded under license, without charge.

Crazy Backwards Alphabet II

Henry Kaiser is known here as a fine guitarist and composer who has often demonstrated a keen interest in the music of Captain Beefheart. He has recorded several cover versions of Don Van Vliet compositions, has researched Captain Beefheart recordings and other material in the Warner vaults, and has worked on various musical projects with John 'Drumbo' French. The 1987 album Crazy Backwards Alphabet, which Henry Kaiser recorded with John French, Michael Maksymenko and Andy West, among others, is a splendid realisation of post-Beefheart musical possibilities.

Crazy Backwards Alphabet II, consisting of previously unheard tracks taken from the original sessions, was released in September 2007 on Henry Kaiser's new digital label There Records / A Train. A good many other Henry Kaiser albums have also been compressed for that label.

There Records / A Train have kept very quiet about their "lossy" product, and there does not seem to be a vinyl or CD version of Crazy Backwards Alphabet II.

As far as I know, just one track from Crazy Backwards Alphabet II is available in a non-scratchproof format. Ten Year Anniversary is on Michael Maksymenko's 2008 retrospective CD from ReR Megacorp, Businesscide - MP3 and WMA samples at Juno Records. The Kräldjursanstalten MySpace page gives a taste of some of Michael's other recordings.

And while I'm mentioning Swedish musicians with a Beefheart bent, erstwhile Beefheart cover guitarist Jimmy Ågren has a new album called Various Phobias. His MySpace page should point the way.

Frank and Don: "envy, admiration, jealousy, arrogance and paranoia"

July's Mojo magazine has a long article by Dave di Martino about the long and troubled relationship between Frank Zappa and Don Van Vliet. Drawing heavily on old music press stories, including his own 1993 interview with Bill Harkleroad, Martino supplements his research with fresh quotations from Pamela des Barres, Cal Schenkel and Gary Lucas. Gary's story about the final meeting between Don and Frank is fleshed out in great detail, while Pamela des Barres and Cal Schenkel provide historical context. Several rarely seen photographs complete the piece.

Captain Beefheart album reviewed in Record Collector

The cover of the June issue of Record Collector magazine suggests that it contains an piece about Captain Beefheart. Well ..... yes and no.

The promised article turns out to be not much more than a review by Alan Clayson of a re-issue of the compilation CD, Electricity. Clayson roundly plugs fellow Record Collector contributor, Harry Shapiro, who, Clayson says, has written an "engrossing and informative essay" for the CD's sleeve notes. An extremely short Q&A between Grahame Bent and John French completes the less than half page piece.

The revisited Electricity compilation contains three 'bonus' tracks which were not included on the original: Safe As Milk (Take 5) , 25th Century Quaker, and Korn Ring Finger.

There is an extract from Clayson's review at Record Collector's website.

Alton Kelley

The death of graphic designer Alton Kelley has been announced. After all the sub dude talking, which was all very charming and a bit of a revelation to hear the words spoken in a NYCity accent, Lucas cranked up the volume for the big payoff. The pulsing, shimmering KANDY KORN was certainly a highlight, sending shock waves through the audience. Building to its magisterial climax, I could not but help step closer to the stage as toupees flew by, pushing up into the corners of the room. Truly powerful sensory overload and deeply moving, this had to be one of the finest moments of live music I have ever experienced. At one point, Philip Johnston made a knob turning gesture, pleading with Gary to lower the volume, begging for tolerance, but a smirk declared the mission and there was no turning back. The crowd was a good mix of young and old (I guess we would call that middle-age these days), and a surprising number of fine ladies were in attendance, which is always a good sign. Of the new numbers, THE PAST SURE IS TENSE proved a natural (can’t you hear the horns on your head?) and the sheer oddity of BLABBER & SMOKE almost made it difficult to hear the music in this often overlooked, seemingly throwaway tune. It is safe to say it is an improvement on the original (sacrilege, I know). WOE-IS-UH-ME-BOP introduced a decidedly non-Beef clarinet (the most human of instruments). This was one curious arrangement and I desperately need to hear it again. YOU KNOW YOU’RE A MAN was a cool selection, having all the gusto, swagger, and playful testosterone-fueled flirtation of the original. Much appreciation goes to Mr. Holtje for his CultureCatch column, but I gotta pipe up and say I loved bassist Jesse Krakow’s A CARROT IS AS CLOSE AS A RABBIT GETS TO A DIAMOND. Oh, and EVENING BELL, anyone? At frickin’ Pete Townsend volume? Hooray! It was clear that Gary meant to rip the roof off the place, and all night long he let loose like the Old Mentor was off in the wings cracking the whip. Heavenly.

Hmmm, and as if this all was not enough, the hardcore got a special treat in the way of the Robyn Hitchcock/Gary Lucas Duo. Mr. Hitchcock has an obvious love for the material, and if he altered the words to SURE ‘NUFF, it probably had more to do with teenage memories than anything else. I even caught him singing CLICK CLACK for his own amusement long after he left the stage. What else? Oh yeah, the paintings! A real nice touch, these projections, many of which I have not seen and wish I owned. Don’t know why, but I like Don’s visual work more and more the older I get. I think it has something to do with being less frightened of silence and more at peace with Death. God Bless you, Don Van Vliet.

......and thank you Peter Warner. If anyone else has any further comments or contributions please add them to the comments box or send me a mail.
