This year was the first time I ever celebrated July 4th in Taipei, much less with a full on bbq on a grassy lawn! Much thanks to my friends J and A for inviting me over and making all the rib fingers and grilled pineapple chicken sooo delicious! Grilled bbq corn, potato salad, cornbread and then fruit and brownies (my small contribution) for dessert.

Yum! I'm totally going to start grilling up some pineapples now on my George Foreman grill (he he) and buying the Stubb's bbq sauce from Costco.

What are you guys eating on your 4th? And does anyone know where to get sparklers in Taipei?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SlASS9YcA1I/AAAAAAAAFtM/gYhH-3twzbc/s400/IMG_3718.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5354800073867526994" />

joanhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04929132028327934282noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14277482.post-10897956436542557712009-06-30T12:39:00.000+08:002009-06-30T12:39:00.420+08:00not taipei/hakka: i recommend LAO DI FANG<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/Sj9F4wguPzI/AAAAAAAAFsE/9SowriT-U4k/s400/IMG_3233.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350071723736579890" />

LAO DI FANG
or "The Old Place"
No. 489, Yuan Lin Road, Sec 1
Ta Shi, Taoyuan County

(03) 390-6863

$$

Kid friendliness: high chairs available

Visit reviewed: 6/21/2009

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/Sj9FVibIWVI/AAAAAAAAFq0/5B44OGJSoFs/s400/IMG_3257.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350071118659606866" />

A few weekends ago, I went on a road trip with a ton of relatives and family friends. The kind where you sit on a bus and listen to them karaoke to pass the time (whether or not you want to). The kind where you end up in other parts of Taiwan and you have no idea how to blog about where it is or how you'd get there. The kind where the day ends with a family dinner where the relatives do the ordering, you never get to see the menu and then huge platter after platter of food come out until you have no idea where the next plate will go.

We went up and down some mountain to take a bunch of pictures and then ended up in Ta Shi at Lao Di Fang, a Hakka or "Ke Jia" restaurant that was bustling with families chowing down. The food arrived as soon as we sat down (might have been a pre-order by my aunt or the tour guide) and never stopped. Mostly everything was good, though some dishes were more oily or salty than we might be used to.

In case you're curious, Brian Webb does a great job explaining in a summary about Taiwan's 3 ethnic groups: Aboriginal, Hakka, Hoklo, and Immigrant.

My favorites were the

stir fried rice noodle

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/Sj9FpBPtiuI/AAAAAAAAFr8/v9gdZRQHMjM/s400/IMG_3234.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350071453350726370" />

vegetables with thousand year old egg

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/Sj9FozhsdgI/AAAAAAAAFr0/MgIFJG836ec/s400/IMG_3237.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350071449668056578" />

and tofu with vegetables pot.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/Sj9FopUaqQI/AAAAAAAAFrs/MlfgVYsUKG4/s400/IMG_3240.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350071446928009474" />

Also pretty good was the oysters

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/Sj9FoT-gRbI/AAAAAAAAFrk/SsN9QKRhe9E/s400/IMG_3242.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350071441198958002" />

and chicken

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/Sj9FodKtcTI/AAAAAAAAFrc/doeTafxiLX0/s400/IMG_3247.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350071443666071858" />

and eggplant.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/Sj9FWVC6spI/AAAAAAAAFrM/6FAvdQSGwfA/s400/IMG_3259.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350071132248257170" />

Surprisingly, I didn't like the Hakka stewed pork belly over simmered preserved mustard greens (similar to "gua bao" when put into steamed buns) and the soup with the "tang yuan" (or rice balls). I'm used to having the "tang yuan" over shaved ice, so I couldn't get used to it in a salty soup, especially the pink ones. The Hakka pork and mustard greens were too salty for me and I missed the Taiwanese version with the condiments of the ground peanuts/sugar powder and cilantro to balance out the flavors.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/Sj9FWD3NEGI/AAAAAAAAFrE/ilXn-4dXrn8/s400/IMG_3263.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350071127635726434" />

Also, it didn't help that these dishes arrived at the end- the shredded "si gua" or loofah and the Hakka stir fried squid. I think I even saw this last year or the year before and thought that I should give it a try. I thought I'd just walk in and drool over the chocolate muffin and enjoy some AC and walk out, but the sign caught my eye and before you know it, I'm ordering a Caramel Coffee Jelly Latte Frappuccino.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SkEw96M2scI/AAAAAAAAFsk/El6CXonRFpk/s400/11807756.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350611672446185922" />

Yes, I said, Caramel Coffee Jelly Latte Frappuccino. Dude, if you are going to have a calorie bomb, you gotta go all the way.

But I immediately regretted getting it after I took my first sip. I think I'm so used to the chewy Q consistency of boba, I felt that the coffee jelly didn't have any spring in its step. It was a bit flavorless and lost in the icy snowstorm of my Caramel Coffee Jelly Latte Frappuccino. I think if the coffee jelly was a bit stronger in flavor, it's a good concept. After all, I'm a huge fan of the coffee jelly topped with coffee ice cream dessert from Sawtelle Kitchen, and this is pretty much the same thing, but blended.

But for the price of one frapp- NT$150- I can get three "Yuan Qi Q Nai" and chew on brown sugared boba to my heart's content.

This hasn't hit the states yet, has it?

joanhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04929132028327934282noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14277482.post-53112189214360843252009-06-24T10:52:00.001+08:002009-06-24T10:52:00.671+08:00hotpot/organic: QI-MIN ORGANIC HOTPOT

QIMIN ORGANIC HOTPOT
128, Zhongxiao E Rd Sec 4, 2 FL
(02) 2772-5123

MRT: Zhong Xiao/Dun Hua

website: qi-min.com

hours: lunch: 11:30am to 2:30pm
dinner: 5:30pm to 10:30pm

$$=$$$

Kid friendliness: spotted an older kid there. roomy but calm atmosphere

Visit reviewed: 6/2/2009

If you're crazy about organic foods and don't mind paying a premium for it, then Qi-Min Organic Hotpot is the place for you. But on weekdays, they go to Thai Town (in the mall) because it's less busy and easier to park. It took me awhile to get to El Gallo from when I first heard about it, as it's in Tianmu which is far for me, and took me awhile to write up and post this review (from when I first started it over 8 months ago), but I'm sure it will still be new to some of you.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SS_EetOKI9I/AAAAAAAADi8/zv3-dmVRmeM/s400/IMG_3569.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273649720488240082" />

El Gallo is definitely a cute, little sit down restaurant that's elegantly festive, with a decent sized English or Chinese menu that include appetizers and main dishes that are more than just tacos and burritos, with dishes like Chile Colorado Pork Stew or Chile Rellenos Stuffed Bell Peppers.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SS_Ee-AstjI/AAAAAAAADjM/TSezvrPZurI/s400/IMG_3572.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273649724995188274" />

They even offer a weekend brunch.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SS_EezKsomI/AAAAAAAADjU/gHdm1ODFpkU/s400/IMG_3575.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273649722084336226" />

I was extremely excited about the enchiladas, as that is one of my favorite dishes back home and the guacamole. My love and familiarity with Mexican food is from Southern California, probably starting with family dinners at neighborhood restaurant El Paso Cantina in Torrance when I was a kid with their warm crispy chips and sweet, spicy salsa- continuing to discovering places like the awesome Mexican/Salvadorian Gloria's Cafe on Venice. In LA, often you get huge hot plates with pools of refried beans and rice almost overwhelming the enchiladas or chimichangas.

I've been to hole in the walls, taco stands, sit down family restaurants and chains, so I'm open to the variations that exist. With El Gallo having a Mexican chef/owner, I thought I'd have something that reminded me of home. But then a number of "different than my expectations" happened.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SS_EfKDZOYI/AAAAAAAADjc/SU-rtoAAWLs/s400/IMG_3579.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273649728227719554" />

"Different than my expectations" number one was when the guacamole (NT$150) came and we tasted it, we could tell it was made with Taiwan avocados (which was confirmed when I asked the waitress). Taiwan avocados are just more stringy and less sweet and creamy than Haas avocados. While I know that Haas avocados are expensive here and not always in season, if I'm paying NT$150 for a tiny bowl of guacamole, then I want the real deal, or don't serve it. Or at least the waitress to ask "it's made with Taiwan avocados, is that ok?" But it was my fault for not asking.

"Different than my expectations" number two was that when the carnitas (NT$450) (or roasted pork) came they weren't spiced, browned and shredded. The flavors of the dish was very light. But this wasn't a big deal- it was still tender and nothing a little salsa couldn't fix.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SS_E-PO5TSI/AAAAAAAADkE/_FC54HkKDGQ/s400/IMG_3589.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273650262194081058" />

But "different than my expectations" number three when I bit into my enchiladas (NT$380) was the deal-breaker. The texture of the corn tortillas was chewy rather than soft and the sauce was like a thick salsa and I realized that the dish wasn't piping hot and it wasn't baked.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SS_E9i-M31I/AAAAAAAADj0/yyxlXKNi77g/s400/IMG_3585.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273650250312900434" />

And wait, there wasn't any melted cheese anywhere.

I took a few more bites to convince myself that it had just been too long since I had an enchilada, but the textures, flavors and elements just didn't add up to be what I was craving. I even asked "aren't enchiladas usually baked?" and they said "no, they were pan fried and then served with sauce."

Huh. I've never had them not baked.

That night, I googled up a storm, extremely confused and I guess in some parts of Mexico that that IS how enchiladas are served? So perhaps El Gallo is a bit too authentic for me and people who are expecting Mexican American versions of Mexican food. Maybe it's sort of like people who come back to Taiwan and wonder where their favorite neighborhood Chinese restaurant's beef and broccoli or moo shu pork went? Even if we eat the original versions, our favorites are the incarnations that we've grown to love, a sort of comfort food that reminds us of home.

After that, I was a bit too disappointed to enjoy the rest of the food, which was decent, but I had really hoped for baked, cheesy enchiladas to eat. I think I might have been okay if I had ordered a burrito or tacos, as their rice and beans were not bad, although sort of randomly served. Some dishes, like mine, came with both. Others came with only one or the other.

There was a very spicy shrimp dish or Camarones a la Diabla... (NT$380)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SS_FS9mWKFI/AAAAAAAADkM/YmNaX9iHwNE/s400/IMG_3590.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273650618237855826" />

and chicken fajitas (NT$450)...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SS_E9kpCncI/AAAAAAAADjk/vbuSI6QEeBs/s400/IMG_3587.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273650250761018818" />

and a kid's meal which had 1/2 a quesadilla and rice...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SS_E9u3uQGI/AAAAAAAADjs/nvP4pVHciew/s400/IMG_3583.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273650253506953314" />

and a strawberry margarita.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SS_E-CnuqDI/AAAAAAAADj8/gSxSxTkVBtk/s400/IMG_3584.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273650258808580146" />

If I lived in the neighborhood, I'd definitely give them some more tries with other items on the menu, like the Carnitas Tamales or the Mexico City Steak, and I think they have a weekday lunch special, but they are just too far for me to make the trek without a special occasion.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SS_FS9l7B_I/AAAAAAAADkU/z_F5psEfT1E/s400/IMG_3594.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273650618236078066" />

joanhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04929132028327934282noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14277482.post-62543843846352841592009-06-18T10:51:00.001+08:002009-06-18T15:29:35.599+08:00desserts/bakery: i strongly recommend PATISSERIE LA DOUCEUR

PATISSERIE LA DOUCEUR
No. 5, Lane 41, Yong Kang St.
(02) 2393-8098

website: ladouceur.com.tw

$

Kid friendliness: small space, but a few couch areas in the back

Visit reviewed: 5/20/2009

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/Sjb_lxz28OI/AAAAAAAAFok/v3yw7oEV0dQ/s400/9324627.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5347742632040132834" />

Patisserie La Douceur is the perfect place for an afternoon retreat for spoiling your sweet tooth. There are no carts, so you just order off the menu and when they are busy, orders can be on the slow side to come.

You MUST get the desserts. My favorites are the mini egg tarts or "dan ta" which come piping hot, with hot out-of-the-oven soft custard centers and layers and layers of flaky crusts, and the almond tofu which comes in a bowl of firm, thick cubes accompanied by a bit of peach and fruit. Just be sure to order the egg tarts before you are done eating, as it takes about 10-15 minutes for them to bake them and bring them out, otherwise you'll be waiting with nothing to eat like we were. Especially if you had the boxes and cute packaging.

I feel like Taipei or Asia in general is more label conscious than LA- or maybe the Chanels per square foot is a higher ratio. Maybe because LA is more spread out, or maybe because there are just so many high end stores in almost every Taipei mall. I swear I've even seen people carrying real Chanels at the night market!

I never even heard of the brands Tod's or Ferragamo, or stepped into a Marc Jacobs store until I lived in Taipei. Was I oblivious? Or has our culture become more knowledgeable about labels with celebrities and the internet and bag blogs?

Anyways- this seems like it could be a fun thing to do for the fashion obsessed girlfriend or daughter in your life. And beware- don't click on the Tastespotting link if you are hungry or have hours to drool over all the food porn pictures.

joanhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04929132028327934282noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14277482.post-83076884903710005932009-06-11T18:06:00.007+08:002009-06-11T18:33:39.987+08:00my kitchen: homemade bulgogi kimchi tacos

I'm. It was a teppanyaki first me for- popcorn! They heated up the carmalized popcorn on the surface and the sugary smell made us all drool.

Da Fang Regimen Teppanyaki is full of surprises, and as a "good for you" restaurant, it's a great place to splurge for a fun night out with friends or family. With the ongoing bite size parts of an upscale multi-course meal, you might not think you'd get full, but you leave satisfied. Across from the 101 mall, it's a bit hidden behind the current MRT construction on Xinyi in a non-descript building.

I've always kind of balked at how expensive teppanyaki can be, but part of the price is for the skill and time of the chef and a privately cooked meal. And it's an especially nice treat if friends are treating! So thanks to K and C for dinner and for introducing me to it!

Da Fang's website says that it has "the recognition and combinations for properties of food items" and since Taipei is a "hot" city, it tries to present foods that are "cool." They also have organic foods and use mountain rose salt and minimal oil. They have lunch and dinner set menus as well as ala carte. The menu changes seasonally, so what you see here might not be what you get the next time you eat there.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SiZFrdpYy2I/AAAAAAAAFcw/bgfecxNSI4o/s400/IMG_9848.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5343034620916583266" />

This set menu (NT$1980) you can choose the main element of sirloin beef, chicken, pork or seafood. Make sure you don't miss the sprawling salad and antipasti bar, (which runs over NT$700 just by itself) as well as the dessert bar hiding in the back. The salad bar had a lot of build your own salad components, as well as freshly made Caesar salad, cheese platters (yum, Brie!) and lots of filling antipasto.

Our friend who chose the restaurant proclaimed that the grilled dry aged Smith and Wollensky New York cut steak was his favorite and that Toscana was the only restaurant here in Taipei that had chefs trained to prepare them.

I'm not a steak expert, I just like to eat them. Sometimes I can barely remember what kind of cut I like best. I tend to like my steaks juicy (probably = fatty) so I tend to lean toward the ribeye. Is that the right cut for me?

I got the set menu which included a soup, salad/antipasto bar, pasta, steak and dessert bar.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/R9a_4GLjvGI/AAAAAAAAA7o/BqzCNmn2cTk/s400/IMG_5079.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176535792161635426" />

I have a faint recollection that our set menu was under NT$2000, but my friend was treating a group of us and I didn't take a picture of the menu, so I'm not sure. Currently, Toscana's set dinner menus run about NT$2650. Toscana is definitely a place to splurge, impress your date or use the corporate card.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/R9a_4mLjvHI/AAAAAAAAA7w/KWxIUqGXxp8/s400/IMG_5084.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176535800751570034" />

I think I remember liking everything, but not being blown away. For an expensive dinner, personally I think you should definitely be gasping in delight over something, otherwise, why pay the higher price. But maybe the steak experts out there can divulge- is dry aged steak all that? Or maybe it's more appreciated when paired with the right wine?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/R9a_5mLjvII/AAAAAAAAA74/CqxA6wmwGEA/s400/IMG_5086.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176535817931439234" />

So I'm slowly working through my list of backlogged posts. This one was for you, dessertobsessed!

View Larger Map

joanhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04929132028327934282noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14277482.post-67285387108024212762009-06-05T11:55:00.003+08:002009-06-18T15:22:26.428+08:00snapshot: i recommend swedish meatballs at IKEA<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SiZLd9q-TcI/AAAAAAAAFdI/GoDAekEvIvY/s400/IMG_2510.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5343040986064768450" />

IKEA
at Asia World Shopping Mall
No. 100, Dun Hua N. They give a good gravy and a sweet berry sauce, which combined gives it a sweet and savory flavor. It definitely can't compare to the way Flavors restaurant rocks their meatballs, but you can't beat the price. They also sell frozen swedish meatballs to take home.

Any other good stuff that I missed? I don't like the ice cream or the hot dogs at the downstairs food court. It's not as good as the ice cream in the states.

And on the way to the food court, you can pick up some furniture, dinner ware or frames.

View Larger Map

joanhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04929132028327934282noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14277482.post-63995402655892209122009-06-03T11:14:00.001+08:002009-06-18T15:20:16.571+08:00korean: i recommend LIANG BAN JIA KOREAN BBQ<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/Shi8tqFs8GI/AAAAAAAAFT8/_qj0105H2Mc/s400/IMG_2266.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5339224850826063970" />

LIANG BAN JIA KOREAN BBQ
at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi A9, 6 FL
No. 9, Song Shou Road
(02) 2720-1980

MRT: Taipei City Hall

website: skm.com.tw

hours: 11 AM - 9:30 PM

$$

Kid friendliness: high chairs available. just keep hands away from hot grill.

Visit reviewed: 5/18/2009

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/Shi8tliHLKI/AAAAAAAAFT0/UnYq_Zw8s4g/s400/IMG_2269.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5339224849603046562" />

Liang Ban Jia is a modern looking restaurant offering an extensive menu of Korean bbq meats, seafood, Korean hotpot soups and traditional dishes in Xinyi Mitsukoshi shopping mall, on the same floor as Saboten, a shabu shabu place, a Japanese restaurant and a Chinese restaurant.

I always walked by this place and assumed it would be too expensive, but actually if you have a group of people, you can get a lot of food for an affordable price. They have combination sets for 2-5 people which works out to be about NT$400-500 a person, which can also be cheaper than ordering different things ala carte.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SiOZR7fwpDI/AAAAAAAAFZ0/KCK2jwK7NjM/s400/IMG_2253.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342282116299269170" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SiOeas6pidI/AAAAAAAAFaE/QJHJhhqMPlU/s400/IMG_2254.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342287764562479570" />

Mostly everything was good, but the best parts of the dinner was the beef "galb" (NT$580 ala carte) and the stone bim bim bap. Or maybe the gooey burrito from Good Day and freshly fried crispy tortilla chips were actually decent. Either way, I'm recommending that all of you missing Taco Bell (admit it, you do) or Mexican food in Taipei, give Good Day a try.

If you were circling the food court at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi, you wouldn't even find it. But if you went towards the other side, glancing past the random Japanese pastries and Johan bakery, then you'd spot the random gingerbread man wearing a sombero.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SiOP8Xv4N6I/AAAAAAAAFZs/dtPddXMxjqU/s400/photo(9).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342271850321295266" />

What?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SiN0DUQ0HAI/AAAAAAAAFZE/aIywczMiXCQ/s400/photo(6).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342241183319202818" />

Maybe it's an appropriate mascot for its equally random menu. Good Day's worldly menu includes not only burritos, tacos and quesadillas, but also burgers, cuban sandwiches, a few all day American breakfasts and Uruguyuan sandwiches.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SiN0DhTVHyI/AAAAAAAAFZM/yWD3nnotG_g/s400/photo(7).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342241186819415842" />

Again... what??

Not quite the foods I picture being the demand of Taiwanese tastebuds, but maybe that's what's so cool about Good Day. It dares to offer it amidst the sea of rice and noodle dishes. If they build it, will people come?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SiOP8N3iiWI/AAAAAAAAFZk/bEZEm-FL8p4/s400/photo(8).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342271847669074274" />

Though I had a so-so experience at its Dun Hua location with the chicken tacos awhile back, I thought I'd give it a second chance.

The blue uniformed employees were helpful in explaining what items were and answering questions about the menu. Though not everyone there was sure about English names of items when I mentioned them, but we worked it out when I'd point to the menu names.

I'd suggest getting a beef burrito (NT$230 (combo with chips, fries and 1 dipping sauce). I was pleasantly surprised with how big it was, almost the size of a burrito you'd get back home- though I did end up digging out most of the mushy rice and not eating it. The salsa and seasoned ground beef was pretty good though, and I liked the melted cheese. I think it also helped I put some of my Costco avocados onto it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SiNw9_ELKUI/AAAAAAAAFY0/ax0HQfe3ArE/s400/IMG_2064.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342237793194813762" />

The chips were warm and crackly crisp and great with my little side of nacho cheese.

I also tried the Classic Cuban (NT$190), but didn't get past a bite after eating my burrito. But it tasted great the next day- especially if you are feeling like a sandwich. For those of you who've never had a Cuban sandwich, it's a variation of a pressed ham and cheese sandwich. The bread wasn't as toasty as I'd like, but I think it might be because I got it to go.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SiNw9sQYtfI/AAAAAAAAFYs/yBzpKYnaXQ4/s400/IMG_2065.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342237788145759730" />

The pickles and mustard give the Classic Cuban a nice zing, and while it compared nothing to my first experience eating a Cuban sandwich at the popular Porto's a few months ago, it's pretty amazing that you can even find a Cuban sandwich in Taipei. Although I don't know how authentic the variations (tuna, turkey or ham & smoked chicken) are.

So those of you who haven't yet had the time to trek to Danshui for Mexican food, take yourself to Good Day and let me know what you think. While it's not as festive an atmosphere as Amigo or Tequila Sunrise, the prices are cheaper and I might even try the all day brunch or one of their 10 or so burgers next time. Their website says there's a NT$100 lunch special for burger of the day plus fries. Sounds like the start of a good day to me.

View Larger Map

Other location:

No. 18, Lane 177, Dun Hua South Road, Sec 1
(02) 8771-0703

joanhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04929132028327934282noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14277482.post-88662942142211038862009-05-29T11:05:00.003+08:002009-06-18T15:17:16.190+08:00dessert: i strongly recommend YOFROYO<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 362px; height: 272px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/ShyPynSY45I/AAAAAAAAFU0/QKR3g2YDoXE/s400/IMG_2248.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340301357856908178" />

YOFROYO
at Shida Night Market
No.9, Ln.59, Shida Rd.
Jhongjeng District

(02))2365-0188

MRT: Kuting

website: yofroyo.com

$

Kid friendliness: lots of free samples and kid pleasing marshmallows, mochi and sprinkles!

Visit reviewed: 5/18/2009

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/ShuxZHXC6BI/AAAAAAAAFUU/mjj9ChJFCUU/s400/IMG_2246.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340056828208408594" />

Everyone in LA has heard of Pinkberry. Maybe even heard of Red Mango, Yogurtland and the Frozen Yogurt Wars.

But in Taipei, the frozen yogurt wave is just beginning... there were some attempts here and there, but none that really seemed that they would take off until now. A few years ago, I even daydreamed to open a Yogurtland-berry-ish froyo place here and eat free frozen yogurt whenever I wanted, the way I wanted, but luckily for us, the founders of YoFroyo actually went ahead and did it.

YoFroyo is located in an alley off of the busy Shida Night Market, across from Subway. I would have never ventured there but for an email invitation letting me know about their Grand Opening. I couldn't make it then, but the call of tarty frozen yogurt (or fro yo, for short, hence the name YoFroYo) was too strong to let me wait too long to check it out.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/ShuxZdPWZnI/AAAAAAAAFUc/JYhhkWl_NQQ/s400/IMG_2239.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340056834081711730" />

And I'm glad I did. First off, next time I'd come with an empty stomach to the Shida Night Market since there are so many alleys full of street eats to sample, such as "gua bao", pan fried dumplings, crispy fried chicken cutlets or "G-pai" and sausages, just to name a few.

But if you are headed just for the frozen yogurt, you have a lot to choose from. There's an array of toppings, flavors and combinations. Most importantly, there were berries, or at least strawberries, and mango. They also have other confections- gummy bears, marshmallows, crumbled cookies, diced fruits, chocolate chips and even baby cream puffs to decorate your dessert. They also have freshly made baby mochi balls to choose from and quite a number of flavors (original, guava, taro, black sugar, blueberry, mango and lychee) to match whatever yogurt flavor you choose. The combinations ar endless. It's probably easier for locals to get the concept, since it's quite similar to picking and choosing your sweet toppings on shaved ice, which also comes in a plethora of colorful shapes and sizes.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/ShuxZghCkbI/AAAAAAAAFUk/Eiydafi6iz4/s400/IMG_2245.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340056834961215922" />

If you've never had Pinkberry, the whole phenomenon came from the frozen yogurt being tart and sweet, rather than just overly sweet. Being a "healthy" dessert with fresh fruits, Pinkberry was even nicknamed "Crackberry" for its addictiveness. From that sprung entrepreneurial copycats with a twist, such as Yogurtland, which provided "pay as you weigh" and self service with 8-12 flavors of froyo to choose from. YoFroYo borrows a few elements from each and makes it own hopes of an Asian franchise- a shiny and hip plastic white and silver decor, a range of six tart to sweet yogurt flavors that can appeal to all ages and tastebuds, and putting an Asian influenced spin to it.

And it works. I really liked the green tea frozen yogurt with a dash of azuki red beans sample that I had. I liked the soft and squishy bite sized mochis that I tried.

All the choices can be a bit overwhelming and with all the signs to read (thankfully in both English and Chinese), I was a little overwhelmed at what to order.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/Sh0QoxQCjjI/AAAAAAAAFVs/RyuOlUYD60o/s400/IMG_2243.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340443025732701746" />

But they try to make it easy for the newbies by giving you large samples and providing a list of wryly named Froyo creations like Tokyo Reverie, My Blueberry Night, Barbie Doll or Cookie Monster if you can't decide (which maybe would be easier to drool over if there were pictures to look at like Coldstones?)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/Sh0Kh3ryX0I/AAAAAAAAFVc/p-L5jKHQmHA/s400/IMG_2242.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340436310130843458" />

But maybe most importantly, the portions are sizeable and the prices are great (perhaps a happy result of needing to be competitive with other night market eats and being near a university). A regular at NT$55 is totally shareable with 2 or 3 people, or large at NT$75 if you're really hungry.

And if you're not a fan of the tart or fruit flavored frozen yogurt (they currently have original tart, mango, blueberry, lychee), then you can get chocolate.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/ShuxZD11PzI/AAAAAAAAFUM/Qs8IK9W7wDU/s400/IMG_2249.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340056827263794994" />

They even have a suggestion box for future flavors. I'd put a vote for peanut butter or strawberry, and white chocolate chips or yogurt chips toppings and of course, raspberry or blueberry toppings when they are in season. The founders are from UC San Diego and set on making it So-cal authentic.

As the weather gets hotter and word of mouth spreads, I'm sure we'll see more signs of a Taipei Yogurt War. Maybe you can be the "cool" one in your group to help your friends discover tarty frozen yogurt the next time you're tired of shaved ice.

What do you think? Is Taipei ready for tart froyo? Will you be checking it out?

View Larger Map

joanhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04929132028327934282noreply@blogger.com17tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14277482.post-37631772956647621692009-05-27T13:03:00.003+08:002009-06-18T15:15:43.009+08:00brunch/western: L'IDIOT brunch<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SflDJGEBXZI/AAAAAAAAFGM/hQvYNPN_Fjg/s400/IMG_0857.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330365457495055762" />

L'IDIOT
No. 156, Minsheng E Rd Sec 3
(02) 2545-6966

website: lidiotrestaurant.com

hours: saturday/sunday: 10:30AM to 5:00PM (brunch available weekends only)

$$

Kid friendliness: high chairs available.

Visit reviewed: 4/25/2009
Last review: regular lunch on 10/28/2008

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SflCZBs27TI/AAAAAAAAFF8/tFSgF6a3a8A/s400/IMG_0847.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330364631690439986" />

On paper, L'Idiot is a great addition to the growing brunch scene in Taipei. But after my latest visit to L'Idiot, I could see why the Diner has packed two locations and L'Idiot slowly fills until 1PM when it's mostly full. Not only do you get more bang for your buck at the Diner, but maybe brunch here at L'Idiot is a bit overly refined, rather than down home comfort food.

This is my fourth or fifth visit (lost count) to L'Idiot's weekend only brunch, but my first time posting, only because each time I never managed to get pictures. And unfortunately, I think this latest visit is my least impressive.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SflCYh7CeRI/AAAAAAAAFFk/PXvxY2aLStM/s400/IMG_0856.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330364623159982354" />

First- I ordered the mushroom and onion omelette (NT$300). But as I dug in, I noticed there wasn't any cheese. Zero. And what is an omelette without cheese?

I had a faint recollection that the last time I had ordered an omelette there had been plenty of cheese. So I waved down the waiter and asked- she said only I must have ordered their ONE omelette with cheese last time (the classic French omelette, I think). The three other omelettes didn't include cheese.

I wish the menu note it somehow, or the waiter could- since for me, the reason I order an omelette is for the cheese- so cheese lovers could request that it be added. Otherwise, I'd get poached eggs or something. And as silky and perfect looking as the omelette was, I personally prefer homemade-style omelettes. Egg without any milk or cream added in, as this one seemed to have.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SflCYQ5MjyI/AAAAAAAAFFc/YliMY7Y4rqw/s400/IMG_0858.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330364618588852002" />

The French Toast that came to the table was cool- lukewarm at best. Do you see how the cinnamon butter isn't nearly melting on the surface of the french toast? We asked to have it reheated, which they did, but it came back piping hot like maybe it was microwaved, and soggy soft to the point of no repair.

If you're really hungry, you can get the Super Deluxe, which is a good amount of food, but still a bit pricey for what you're getting at NT$620. Eggs, bacon, sausage, orange juice, tea or coffee, half a ham and grilled cheese sandwich, soup and salad and a dessert. Maybe if the dessert was more drool worthy and they dropped a couple hundred NT off the price.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SflCYq12t_I/AAAAAAAAFFs/tl4yDxSRkco/s400/IMG_0852.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330364625554159602" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SflDI8YUSjI/AAAAAAAAFGE/enaMxrc_HCs/s400/IMG_0863.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330365454895827506" />

My favorite was probably the beef and egg breakfast burrito (NT$380), which was the first time I spotted it on the menu. I liked the flavors of the steak and mild spiciness of the salsa in the wrap, but it would have been perfect if there was more meat and a dash of guacamole, especially for the price.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SfkyCA53ltI/AAAAAAAAFFU/D4-MWxrXxJU/s400/IMG_0860.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330346644153538258" />

Of course, part of the higher prices you are paying for is the ambience, and the touches like complimentary ricotta bread appetizer and goody bag of cookies when you leave.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SflCY3ERMpI/AAAAAAAAFF0/pxPaacPfviY/s400/IMG_0848.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330364628835840658" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SfkyBugw4xI/AAAAAAAAFE8/yawW8KrIcUA/s400/IMG_0876.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330346639216403218" />

I've also had the crabcakes egg's benedict in the past, and found it a bit mushy. The crabcakes were not crispy, nor were the english muffins toasted, so with the poached eggs, there was no satisfying contrast in textures. The cheeseburger with egg is not bad, but I disliked the overly bready and soft bun. I'd also avoid the chicken pot pie, which doesn't come with a baked crust, but a biscuit on the side instead- my friends and I tasted it and no one wanted seconds.

My relatives (and maybe yours) preferred pasta dishes over a Western brunch and I had a taste and it's still good - seafood orechetta pasta and mushroom ravioli. L'Idiot is more spacious and comfortable for larger groups, and nicer atmosphere and presentation if you need to impress the relatives. While I still like the regular menu at L'Idiot, the brunch needs a few tweaks to be equally droolworthy.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SfkyBVU0xRI/AAAAAAAAFE0/yy1CD3leGNs/s400/IMG_0877.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330346632455439634" />

View Larger Map

joanhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04929132028327934282noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14277482.post-35410848737166805652009-05-27T11:03:00.001+08:002009-05-27T11:09:08.160+08:00Snapshot: Secret ingredients to 5 spice bag used in Chinese cooking

joanhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04929132028327934282noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14277482.post-74961877778883748012009-05-25T13:51:00.003+08:002009-06-18T17:04:14.851+08:00revisited/dessert: i strongly recommend BIG TOM's ICE CREAM<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SgwGVWtGC7I/AAAAAAAAFIo/QVynSleUx0A/s400/IMG_1206.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335646622468934578" />

BIG TOM's ICE CREAM
No.505, Ren-ai Rd., Sec. 4
(02) 2345-4213

website: bigtom.us

$$

Kid friendliness: areas to lounge. friendly free samples.

Visit reviewed: 4/27/2009
Previous review: 11/16/2008

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3SBgAedznDo/SgwGVYxZtwI/AAAAAAAAFIw/Z4noHJy-RMc/s400/IMG_1196.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335646623023871746" />

If you're jonesing for a good waffle, you should definitely give Big Tom's a shot... though it'll be covered with three scoops of ice cream and you'll more likely have it for afternoon tea than for breakfast.

And the SYS Memorial Hall location is perfect for a leisurely afternoon tea. Sour. Spicy. Savory. Snow King Ice Cream has any kind of flavor you'd want, and yes, it's ice cream.

See the menu above? Carrot, Honey, Mustard, Curry, Chili Pepper, Mint, Tomato, Basil, Bitter Melon. Yup, still ice cream flavors.

Not strange enough? There's also chicken, soybean curd, pork floss and pig's feet flavored ice cream.

But don't let those unusual flavors scare you away if you're strictly a chocolate or strawberry. Snow King also does fabulous traditional flavors that tastes as if you were eating the essence of the fruits or flavors themselves. My favorite is peach, which has small chunks of icy peach inside, or recently, I tried guava, which tastes like melt-in-your-mouth guava.

A much wider array of flavors are available than most of the chain shops in town- Snow King offers around 73 almost every day, and all of its ice cream is handmade by the shop, most using local ingredients.

Seeing Snow King packed with students gasping in delight and clamoring to taste and share the various flavors they had ordered reminded me of the first time I came with a bunch of friends from the states five years ago. The store has a "no sample" policy, so if you want to give Taiwan Beer or Sweet Corn or Rose ice cream a try, you have to buy a scoop. Otherwise they'd probably go out of business giving away samples from curious visitors.

Each flavor is priced differently and the prices are shown on the Chinese menu. They have an English menu upon request (but it doesn't have the prices on them). Most scoops run from NT$60-$100, but goes as low as NT$45 for Milk, Sesame or Mint and as high as NT$150 for Ginseng. It's also worth noting that one of their popular flavors- Taro- has been discontinued for a few years, much to the sadness of my visiting friend.

Making each flavor into ice cream basically reduces it to its core notes of flavors- like my sister got Kiwi and it was a bit sour with the flecks of crunchy kiwi seeds throughout- especially since I took a bite of it after I ate my peach ice cream.

Snow King Ice Cream is perfect to take a group of visiting friends after walking around nearby Ximending. It's basically across the street and a few blocks from the Ximen MRT, near the police station and Zhongshan Hall.

I know you guys love desserts, so looking forward to hearing if anyone has tried some of the weirder flavors and what you thought!

joanhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04929132028327934282noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14277482.post-30533659931154274292009-05-17T14:01:00.000+08:002009-05-17T14:01:00.903+08:00news: making a list, checking it twiceI'm a procrastinator... the one who didn't start typing up her paper until the night before it was due. So I'm sort of amazed, sort of proud of myself that I've been able to keep a relatively steady stream of posts through the years without any official deadlines. So in hopes of catching up to "real time" posts, here is a declaration and list of restaurants that I need to write up.

Lots of pictures, not enough words yet:

-Good Day at Xin Yi Mitsukoshi
-G-woo chicken soup (to be translated)
-Primo Trattoria
-Tong Hua night market
-Saffron Indian Restaurant
-Yogurt Art
-Da Fang Teppanyaki
-L'Idiot brunch
-Sashimiya
-Big Tom's Ice Cream (revisited)
-Chef Showtime
-Flavor
-TSC in Banqiao
-Vietnamese pho shop (to be translated)
-Shabu shabu shop (to be translated)
-VVG Bistro brunch (revisited)
-28 Studio private kitchen
-Ding Won mala hotpot (not Tripod King)
-Chia Chia Steak
-Parents Restaurant
-El Gallo
-Posh
-Omelete to Go
-Indochine at Dun Hua Eslite food court
-Ao Ba
-Toscana at Sherwood Hotel
-Shanghai Shanghai
-Pasta West East

Some have been sitting as drafts in my blogspot for years! So if you see any that you want to read about, let me know and I'll move it up to the front of the line. :) And if you want more instant gratification, then take a look at Twitter since I've been using Twitpic more often to take random food pics.

joanhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04929132028327934282noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14277482.post-79357287229981913722009-05-17T11:43:00.003+08:002009-06-11T00:13:02.137+08:00snapshot: Tai Yi shaved ice

Who else is eating shaved ice this weekend? Tai Yi is SO good! Though I much prefer their red bean and fresh mochi balls with condensed milk over the mango/strawberry here.

For mango ice, you're better sticking to Ice Monster.

But there seems to be a new crop of frozen yogurt places coming to Taipei. I'll hopefully get to check them all out and let you know! Anyone try Yogurt Art or Yofroyo yet? What would you rather have to beat the heat? Shaved ice vs good frozen yogurt?

joanhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04929132028327934282noreply@blogger.com9
