Noble kings and princes would bow to him whenever he passed by and roared out his name, while wagging his gigantic tail in the air. As years passed by, Puff loved the land so much so that he would never want to return to the sea again……………….”

As usual, come each Saturday, I would dutifully join the EBC group to perform my worshipful ritual for the EBC pilgrimage. This Saturday (11-07-09) the venue was at Gunung Kutu, a hill that tucks away a short distance from the town of Kuala Kubur Baru.

Since I don’t usually drive for long distance, I would carpool with other trekkers. And before the day of trekking, one kind soul who signed off as “White Dragon” contacted me for the arrangement……. He said he was having a cough and could only manage a cockerel cry or “woof woof” if he were to get lost in the jungle. He doesn’t mind fetching me from my home as he lives in the neighboring township. His philosophy is to deliver all his goods to the door. I graciously accepted his kind offer and requested him not to do the “woof woof” if he did not see me waiting at my door, for my neighbor is Malay. But a cockerel cry or meow meow is OK.
.

Jayne Aw
.
Gunung Kutu

The journey to KKB was a breeze and we were there before the scheduled time. More and more trekkers soon arrived and joined us for breakfast. Led by Hamdan, the entourage drove off from KKB and headed to Gunung Kutu which is a short distance away. The weather didn’t look too good as there were many dark clouds surrounding the mountains. We just prayed and hoped for the best.

The trail started with a flat terrain that is home to variety of flora and fruits, in particular durian. On the way, we met a group of campers who were having some kind of carnival at the camp site. I soon noticed a banana leaf tent standing a distance away from the campsite. While taking a closer look, a guy in white trouser was dashing towards the tent and followed by Fat Wong. Yes, that was White Dragon, couldn’t wait to do his banking business, and this was probably his second this morning.

After crossing two hanging bridges, we arrived at the stream with cascading falls which offers a refreshing point for trekkers to freshen-up after descending. We had to take off our shoes to cross the stream, unless one ddd not mind soaking one’s feet in damp sock for the whole trekking trip.

The journey continued with flat terrain, crossing a couple of smaller streams and barriers before coming to the steep climb with big rocks and boulders along the way. The trail is a combination of Pine Tree Trail and Apek Hill. Rather pleasant and not too demanding as Gunung Irau. Weather was so far so good. Along the way, we were greeted by some “freshly-dropped” durians. Someone suggested to hide the durians behind tree trunk and pick them up on the way out so we could have a durian party.

It took about 3 hours to reach the peak, which is a small clearing with two big boulders sitting majestically on top of the summit. It was windy at the peak and one could feel chilly after a while especially if one was soaked in wet t-shirt.

After unloading our food and water, the backpack became much lighter and descending was a breeze as compared to ascending, which took about 2 hours. I personally prefer the one-way terrain, i.e. all the way up and all the way down, instead of the undulating up-down terrain as going against gravity at the last stretch is torturous.

We stopped at the waterfall to refresh ourselves. It is a nice spot for overnight camping and perhaps a meditation retreat too. While relaxing in the Jacuzzi of nature, I could feel the weariness and tiredness melting away along with the gushing cool mountain water. This could be better than salon body message.

The rain clouds finally couldn’t hold anymore and made their way down. We had to quickly pack up and made our way to the car park which took another 15 minutes. Everyone was soaked in wet cloths and had to change to clean cloths before heading to Ulu Yum for dinner.

Dinner at Ulu Yam

14 of us congregated at a restaurant in Ulu Yam. Dishes ordered including the famous law mee, tomyam prawns in coconut, Guiness stout chicken wings, steamed fish, plus more………….. The most refreshing was the fresh water chestnut juice. Within a short span of time, the food was gobbled down the hungry stomachs of the worn trekkers.

After the offering to the temples of stomach, mission for today was deemed accomplished and so it was time to head for home and said Ciao to the fellow trekkers.

White dragon - In white pants

Journey Back Home

There were 4 of us in White Dragon’s car. Incidentally, the lady trekker who also loves white attire was with us, to whom I addressed as “White Phoenix”. Journey back home was filled with non-stop laughter, with the humorous conversation centered-around White Dragon.

Asked why he is not joining this year’s EBC trekking, he said KC asked him to prepare for next year’s trekking instead. So we encouraged him to go trekking in Gunung Nuang every week and to complete 6 laps up-down Batu Cave in 30 minutes to impress KC, who may change his mind.

BTW, though a dragon glides effortlessly in water but put him in a mountain, he may face handicap, as in golf game. However given time, a dragon can transform and glide effortlessly in the jungle too, just like his crawling cousins.

Well, I have yet to meet another person who can come close to White Dragon’s obsession with his zodiac animal. Someone saw a small stuffed toy in his car and was told that it is a small dragon given to him by somebody. When asked if there is a bigger stuffed dragon at home, he comically replied that he is “THE ONE”. Asked how he kept his white trousers clean during trekking, the secret was to place a tower over the obstacle, sat over it to protect the trousers. And finally I understand why he has planted Longan (dragon eye) and 20 dragon fruit trees in his house. They are all related to dragon ...

Writte by Jayne Aw

Next trekking trips:

18 July, Saturday - Bukit Tabur

25 July, Saturday - Gunung Datuk @ Seremban

Click here for photos of Bukit Tabur

Click here for photos of Gunung Datuk

.

KC & the Sunshine Runnershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07070177728699974090noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14183065.post-10127678110059253882009-07-14T18:48:00.000+08:002009-07-14T18:56:35.567+08:00SDTMC Club Officers Installation Nite Anyone interested to join me to have an evening of fun? I could hear a few trekkers commented that it is cold when still in wet T-shirts.

The stream of Gunung Kutu is one of the best that I have seen. Notice the new pair of shoes from the box... :-)

Mud, dirt, obstacles, mossy plants and dampness greeted all trekkers in Gunung Irau – a popular trekking trail located in the cool country of Cameron Highlands. On Saturday 4 July, about 60 trekkers from Kuala Lumpur were game for the challenge to scale to the peak of Gunung Irau.

The idea was first mooted by TonyQ, the Mountain Sifu, where he would be leading another group of trekkers for his coming Mulu and Mount Kinabalu trips in end August and September 2009. We have other groups from Jason Lee/Kelly Hoh, Agnes Tan, Bernard Lee and the EBC (Everest Base Camp) groups.

It was a superb day for a great trekking event. Though it is dry season in Kuala Lumpur, the plants in this trail look very green. They must have been constantly nurtured with the abundance of rainfall and favourable climate. Walking along the mossy forest, I felt like walking in those temperate forests.

The first part of the trail was easy as the local authority built elevated steps that facilitate movement independent of the difficult terrain. At the end of the steps, the trekkers were puzzled when seeing split paths that caused a bit of concern as to which is the correct path to take.

Trekking in this mossy forest was really challenging in climbing up and down nature's obstacles – the roots, the rocks and to be greeted by the mud pit. One has to use both hands to pull one up the obstacles. While it is common to see a trekker's shoe covered with brownish or black mud, I saw at least two trekkers where both trekking shoes were completely covered with mud. Of course, the most challenging effort is to stay clean.

Almost reaching the peak, I saw Jason Lee's group was on its way down. They started slightly earlier; being very regular in trekking, his group moved swiftly. Standing next to a firm spot of a slope, we exchanged brief conversation. One team member commented that I was very clean after going through all the mud pits. So Jason said, "KC is the master mah..." – that was really an encouraging and uplifting remarks.

One good point of trekking here is that there is no leech at all. I am sure that is the most welcoming news for lady trekkers who find that the small creatures are most disturbing. Another most pleasant experience is the cool breeze that was gently blowing which is unique of trekking in high mountains.

Cameron Highlands
When the person-in-charge of booking apartments told me that most apartments were fully booked for the weekend, I was concerned over the influx of tourists to this cool mountain retreat. On our way down to Brinchang town after the trekking at about 6:00 p.m., the traffic jam was more than 1km away and it took almost one hour to clear the traffic jam. The cause: the pasar malam which was opened for business on both side of the main road at the Brinchang town leaving only one lane each side for traffic.

Absence of Leeches
According to my learned trekker, LeeWY, there are no animals wandering in the mountain of Cemeron Highlands as the land is surrounded by farming. The animals attract leeches. This is quite a big group: about 25 trekkers from TonyQ's team, and 40 trekkers with the Everest Base Camp Oct 2009 ("EBC") team.

With EBC team:

EBC Group (yours truly KC) - 12 persons
Alex Chan - 9 persons
Kelly Hoh - 9 persons (day trip)
Agnes Tan - 7 to 10 persons
Bernard Lee - 4 persons

The team will start the journey from Kuala Lumpur early in the morning; have breakfast at Tapah Rest Area, and start trekking when reaching Cameron Highlands.

The main team lead, TonyQ a.k.a. The Mountain Sifu, will tag the directional labels (or markers) so that all could be guided on to the correct direction. The labels are those red and white plastic ribbons that will be labeled TQ01, TQ02, TQ03... Well, TQ is not "thank Q"; instead, it is TonyQ's initial.

Due to outbreak of flu virus, most people could not travel by flight for holidays. So the local tourism at Cameron Highlands is having a boom time with most apartments are fully booked for the next few weekends.

After much communication, the transport and accommodation arrangement were confirmed.

Members in EBC Group for this trekking:
KC, Dr. Hamdan, Jayne, Alexis, Tan Pei Ling, TehKS, Francis Chiong, LengHW, LawSieYung, Sharon, ChooTS and brother.
.

Filepix at peak of Gunung Irau

Mud Trap

The team members received one email from TonyQ, who spent his holidays in the serene setting of East Coast during the KL marathon weekend. Part of the instructions are: make sure every trekker has enough water; follow the directional labels (or marker); otherwise, one can be going round and round; do not walk on the muddy path else a trekker would come back without shoes.

Okay, this is the interesting part: For those who have not been to Gunung Irau trail, the muddy path/area is not of the yellow mud type. Instead, the earth is dark brown or black, similar to the dark earth that we see. The moment you step your foot on it, your foot would sink at least for 1 - 2 feet. Don't worry; it is not the quick sand type (of many feet deep). Though we say that "take nothing but photos; leave nothing but footprints", it is not recommended that you leave too vivid footprint (or your shoes) this way. Nevertheless, if you do, remember to ask your buddy to take a photo of you for remembrance.

How to recognize the potential mud trap:
1. The obvious ... vivid footprint or shoes left behind
2. The untouched and smooth surface - no footprint

Have an enjoyable and memorable trip.

Click here for previous trekking trip at Gunung Irau (scroll down the pages).

The next posting shall be delayed.

Next trekking trip: Gunung Kutu at Kuala Kubu Baru on Saturday 11 July 2009.

Written by KC

KC & the Sunshine Runnershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07070177728699974090noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14183065.post-83818011774936827712009-07-01T23:28:00.001+08:002009-07-01T21:40:11.398+08:00KL Marathon (4)My Last Hurrah In Full Marathon

Written by Josie Yap

Fellow runners and friends asked why Standard Chartered KL Marathon (“SCKLM”) 2009 is my last marathon run. Well, to me, 3 times is more than what I expected. Having run my first in 2007 in Singapore, it was supposed to be a one-time experience. But I couldn’t resist the temptation to sign up in 2008 – again in Singapore. And then this year, there I was, signing up again on the very first day of SCKLM registration. I wouldn’t have signed up if it was not organized by Standard Chartered Bank after hearing all the shortcomings when it was organized by previous organizer over the past years. After all, Standard Chartered has been doing a good job in Singapore. Thus, the expectation was high.

Doubts quickly crept in after all the chaos during Race Pack collection on the eve of SCKLM. My friend, Angie was given a Half Marathon Bib number even though she registered for Full Marathon category. It was fortunate that she realized the mistake when she went to redeem the free Power Bar and got her right Bib No. Another fellow runner, Mr Wong started queuing up since 11am on Friday under the hot sun, got wet when it rained. By the time he got all the Bib Nos for different categories somewhat 3 hours later, he had come down with flu and fever. He was lucky to recover just in time to run on Sunday 28 June. I was one of the lucky ones who were fortunate enough to collect the race pack in a quickie.
.

L-R: Eng, Meng, Weng, YouBL, Chiew Hong, Steven, Panny, William

I reached Dataran Merdeka on Sunday morning at 3.50am. If one expects a carnival-like atmosphere just like in Singapore, then one would be disappointed. Runners were greeted with silence except for voice of the announcer. I guess no one bother as everyone were busy catching up with one another before the race started. I was extremely happy when it started to rain because the biggest enemy in all my runs is the scorching sun. The drizzle continued at the gun off until 2km or 3km into the run. It was a perfect weather. My target is to complete the run in Sub 6 hours, just like my previous two marathons. Running with me was Dannie, pacing with me from the start. As it was his first time running full, he was determined to complete the run and Sub 6 hours is good enough for him for a start.

With a slow and steady pace, it was a comfortable run from the beginning. Reaching the water station at 17.5km, we were caught by surprise when the volunteers said they have ran out of cups. This is definitely the first time I came across a running event where water stations ran out of cups. Well, at least they have not run out of water yet. Gulping down 100Plus and water from 2.0 litres bottles without touching the mouth was no easy task and definitely very unlady-like…J. But who wants to take the risk with the Influenza H1N1 virus threat?
.

The signature landmark, KLCC, is at the background

At 20km, it was time to get some deep heat cream onto my legs since it was washed away by the rain. To our dismay, we were informed by the St John Ambulance staffs that they have run out of deep heat cream. Fortunately, Dannie brought along a small tube of deep heat cream and the St John Ambulance staff was good enough to put on for me. The same cannot be said about some St John Ambulance staff who refuses to rub oil onto runners’ legs even though they had their gloves on leaving runners no choice but to wipe off residue on their clothes.

After the water station at 25km mark, there was no water station in sight till 30km mark. Obviously, water station at 27.5km has run out of supply and same goes for water station at 32.5km. Obvious reason was the route clashed with 21km category causing the shortage. Some runners were seen carrying the 2 litre bottle of water or 100plus which hampers one’s movement but what choice does runners have as their trust in the organizer has been broken and not dare to take the risk of waiting for the next water station. If not for the beautiful weather, runners would have been in danger of dehydration under the hot sun.
.

JosieYap

Running along the long stretch of Jalan Damansara was quite a frightening experience with the runners running together with speeding vehicles separated only by the cones placed. It was a relief when we approach the more familiar routes of normal 10km running events near Jalan Parliament.
From 30km onwards, we struggle with minor cramps and tight muscles leaving us no choice but to alternate between walks and slow runs. Slopes that we would normally run up like a charging bull becomes killing slopes.

Reaching the 39km marker was a mix of emotions as one can hear the loud noise from Dataran Merdeka and yet knowing that there’s another 3.195km to go. The 1km distance of Jalan Raja Laut before we see the turning into Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman seems never ending. We met Mr. Tai by the roadside who was so kind to hand us water to drink. We also had to be cautious along these well known busy roads as traffic police and volunteers seems to have gone out of sight. The encouragement we had was some onlookers who clapped their hands and cheered us on.
.

Dannie and Josie

From a distance, the Finishing sign at Dataran Merdeka was the most beautiful sign throughout the whole run. With full concentration and determination, we ran slowly but steadily towards the finishing line amidst cheers from fellow runners and friends. It was a tremendous feeling of relief and exhilaration that I managed to finish my last marathon before 6 hours. It doesn’t matter that it was a close one with only 8 minutes to go. Runners who knew me very well know I never have enough training and have never attempt to train up to 25km, let alone 30km to prepare for a marathon. So, to be able to complete the run is an achievement. From now, I will concentrate more on half marathons which I can really enjoy….:-)

Despite all the complaints and whining, I can look back and laugh over it as all these are fond and sweet memories of my 3 full marathon runs. Although SCKLM has its shortcoming, it was my most comfortable and relaxing run out of my 3 marathons. Never once, any negative thoughts wander into my mind during this run as compared to my previous 2 runs in Singapore when feelings of despair and regrets crept in especially under the scorching sun.
.

On a more serious note, basically as runners, we only want :-
1. Hassle-free race pack collection so that runners can reserve their energy and relax before the run.
2. Enough drinks stations during and after the run.
3. Started at 6:15 a.m. on Sunday 28 June, I was running in the half marathon. She was wearing a cap with her hair tied in pony tail. Wearing a dark red top and black running short, her movement looked graceful and pleasing to the eyes.

With her body leaned slightly forward, her stride seemed strong and swift when running. After a while, I decided to overtake her. A few seconds later, I heard someone was calling my name: “KC”. When I turned my head, the girl who was ahead of me was Chantelle.
.

Chantelle training for 20km run

With thousands and thousands of runners, it is not easy to look for your friends in a sea of runners. In term of numbers, the KL Marathon organized Standard Chartered – the maiden attempt in Kuala Lumpur – was a big success. This year, the official colour of the event was green and blue mirroring the official colour of Standard Chartered Bank. If you are not aware, bibs with green label is for full marathon while blue is for half marathon.

The Bibs
This is by far the most advanced bibs that I have seen. The chips, using RDIF (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, is actually imbedded behind the bibs: a simple tag that activates your timing at the starting point, and stop your timing at the finishing point. With the simplified procedure, the cumbersome way of paying deposit and later collecting them is considered old fashion!

The Weather
The weather was most ideal for running this morning. Other than the slight drizzle at the start of full marathon at 5:00 a.m., the sun only came out strong at 11:00 a.m. when the full marathon was officially concluded.

The Traffic
Enough has been said in the past years of KL marathons organized by FTAAA about the notorious stretch of traffic along Jalan Loke Yew, Jalan Cheras area where the road is chocked with heavy traffic. I was surprised to see that this is the main route (attraction) for this new KL marathon.

Water Stations
According to Alexis, the Mount Everest Base Camp trekker (this October 2009) who is running in the full marathon said that there was no water at the last three water stations. I could empathize with her what it is like running a full marathon when there wasn’t enough water, and the organizer did not honour their words.

Distance Marker
This is very confusing. Chantelle and I did not believe the number that we saw. But we should think that the distance marker is for full marathon (and not half marathon category). Only when I see a 35km marker, I would then know that we have another 7km to go (35km + 7km = 42km for full marathon). For some, after running for many kilometers, it is not easy to compute at that moment.

The Trekkers and Marathoners
The Mount Everest Base Camp trekkers who are taking part in the full marathon are AB Tan, PK Chan, Alexis and SC Yong; save for yours truly (KC) who is running in the half.

Chantelle
I could see that she improved very much in her running. With a slimmer body, it is evident that she has spent much effort to train. A few years ago, while we trained for 20km run, I was doing the talking when running. This time, she could run and talk quite effortlessly. I was pacing with her and I could see that she is a strong runner now. She and another seven runners will be going to run in the Gold Coast Marathon this coming Sunday (5 July) and this will be her third full marathon attempt.

The photographer
After taking many photographs of runners in action, Jason Lee is participating in the run himself. It is indeed an incredible courage that he is attempting the full marathon. This time, we have CS Wong (click here for photo album; part of the KL marathon photos are ready) who was there to take photos. He has upgraded his camera to one of serious pro grade and better then Nikon D200 SLR.
.

Chee Wee running in the previous KL marathon (filepix photo courtesy of Jason Lee)

Mei Ling
I met Mei Ling at the starting/ending area. She was very active in running and trekking previously. She actually planned her route and took LRT and cheered her husband who is running in the full marathon. She could tell me that Chee Wee (another penguin bro runner) was also there running.

Overall

Other than the glitches of long delay in collecting the bibs and race package on Friday 26 June that caused much unhappiness among the runners; other than the distance markers and also insufficient water for the full marathon runners, there is still room for improvement. Maybe the expectation is high since Standard Chartered has successfully organized in Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Nairobi. Well, we hope the organizer can raise the standards of KL Marathon on par with the other marathons. BRAVO to the organizer for staging this massive event.
.
click here for official website on KL Marathon.

Written by KC

KC & the Sunshine Runnershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07070177728699974090noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14183065.post-73087077468551307922009-06-25T23:22:00.003+08:002009-06-25T23:29:21.415+08:00Japan GT Sepang (4)
Please click here to view photos taken by yours truly (KC). While we, the earth-bound ladies, have all the enjoyment of putting on make-up, pedicure, manicure, etc, etc to look our best. And Mother Earth has been so kind to host all year round sales to satisfy the ladies’ obsessive addiction for shopping, only to be followed by the anxiety of opening the credit card statement subsequently.

How would a fairy derive a sense of accomplishment as I do from completing a satisfying painting (ignoring the many that went into the trash!) when everything else can be done at the point of a finger? In the movie “Ghost”, Patrick Swayze was desperately trying to touch Demi Moore but to no avail when he became the formless ghost. He has to get help from the eccentric spiritual medium Whoopi Goldberg to feel his loved one again. But that could all be about to change as tennis officials are considering a ban on emitting too much noise. Something needs to be done to govern the level of noise on the courts: “There is a need for some sort of regulation.”
.

Used to watching badminton games on Television, we see that the players hardly utter any sound when the games are played. However, in tennis, especially the women’s players, every hit is accompanied with a loud scream. That was how I described the action until another runner friend corrected me that the right description is “grunt” or “grunting”.

Unfortunately, my tennis idol, Maria Sharapova, is the Queen of Grunt. As I said before, I got to love what my idol is doing. Here is the statistic:

The Grunters (in decibles)

Lion’s roar = 110
Maria Sharapova = 101
Monica Seles = 93.2

Imagine for every shot when Maria hit, we hear a lion roar in almost similar loudness. That is not easy to get use to. As for Minica Seles, she groans so loud that she is not far from Maria. Imagine for every shot, you would hear Minica Seles emitting a long, low sound just like she is experiencing a strong pain.
.

Do you think the players are taught grunting? Well, the coach says: “We have always taught the proper ways to breathe in and out. Players grunt because it helps them release energy and keep focused.” On the other hand, certain opponents complain that the disturbing and distracting sound made them loosing focus, and lost in the games.

Well, if you like to hear players grunt, do enjoy the games before the grunting is being regulated.

click here for all postings on Maria Sharapova (scroll down the pages).

Photos of Maria Sharapova are extracted from the official website.

Written by KC
.

KC & the Sunshine Runnershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07070177728699974090noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14183065.post-48127669857998589742009-06-15T23:30:00.000+08:002009-06-15T21:32:46.860+08:00Chantelle Via Ferrata Climb at Mount Kinabalu
Chantelle

Of all the team members in this Mount Kinabalu trekking trip organized by Tony on 29 April 2009, one team member that Tony and I talked much about is Chantelle. So far, response is good; about 32 trekkers have indicated to come.

Since this is a short trail (compared to Gunung Nuang on 23 May), the team shall go for a sumptuous lunch at the renown restaurant serving famous Ikan Bakar. I told him that after running up the peak of Broga Hill, I ran down; then ran to the Broga town which is about 2 km away. Then I ran further in to look for a Chinese temple – a landmark for the famous Ikan Bakar restaurants.

According to Sharon, another lady trekker who took part in the 25km Ball Breaker Challenge Run (Yes, guys beware!!) at Broga Hill on 7 June 2009, she said next to the temple is the famous Ikan Bakar restaurant.

Immediately after the Police Station, I saw a temple and two restaurants opposite, and then I ran back to my car 2km away.

When I called the co-Team Lead, he said the Chinese temple is about 10km away from the town. So I said, "I did not run far enough!!"

So come this Saturday, we shall go in MPVs or cars and I do not have to run there.

The above photos are extracted from here and here.
Written by KC
.

KC & the Sunshine Runnershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07070177728699974090noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14183065.post-69104914848135123872009-06-08T22:26:00.001+08:002009-06-22T20:46:50.969+08:00Japan Super GT
Get Set For The Mother of All Battle At Sepang F1 Circuit from 19 to 21 June 2009.

Jason Lee, Shukri and yours truly (KC) will be going there to witness this great event.

I learn that the three most exciting events happening at Sepang F1 Circuit are Japan Guper GT, MotorGP and Formula 1.

A freind of mine have two (2) extra tickets to this great event.
