True, I didn't take this photo, but I couldn't pass up the chance to point out how the lives of Portlanders are so intertwined.

I was sorting through some of my dad's stuff last night and came upon his Freshman-year year book from Jefferson High. I looked up his photo to see how young he looked in 1955. After a subtle chuckle, I started looking at what other kids looked like in his class and happened to notice the name of the kid to the lower-right of my dad; Ron Sellis [sic]. Yup, that's Sally's dad.

I don't know if Pete and Ron were friends at all. Hopefully Sally can ask Ron whether he knew my dad. Regardless, both of them look incredibly happy to be in High School.

My dad was only at Jefferson for his freshman year. Grandma and Grandpa moved the family down to San Francisco and dad graduated down there.

Anyway, I hope you get a chuckle too. And yes, I know, my dad and I look scarily alike :)

The Palouse is located in Eastern Washington near Pullman and the campus of Washington State University. I took this image from the top of Steptoe Butte, which offers a 360-degree view of the rippled farmlands.

Mt. Hood - Crater Rock

Last night I went up to Timberline Lodge to capture some interior shots of the amazing craftsmanship and a great sunset shot of the summit.

As I was taking my summit images, I realized that the vantage point from just above Timberline Lodge did not provide too much great light of the sunset. I really wanted to be a bit farther Northwest. That said, I was able to get this nice light on the rim just to the right of Crater Rock.

The sky was a bit hazy, so this isn't as sharp an image as I would have liked. I guess I should buy a UV filter for my 80-200.

Another possible issue for sharpness is camera movement, maybe I need a shutter release?

Silver Falls - Middle North Falls

Yesterday was a wonderful day for a hike at Silver Falls State Park.

I originally wanted to arrive at the trail head at sunrise, but I found out that the park does not open until 7 a.m. I knew the likelihood of anyone enforcing that rule would be small, but it gave me a reason to sleep in a bit longer. (I'm glad I did, otherwise I would not have got the shot I posted yesterday.)

After arriving I found that the light in the canyon is very nice for photography even after sunrise, because the sun does not break over the walls until about two hours later.

I parked at the North entrance of the park and took the two mile hike down to the Lower North Falls. I did not hike the full eight mile loop to South Falls and back because the light was getting very harsh once I saw all the northern falls.

My photo eye was only seeing the large landscapes. I tried to exhibit patience by stopping and looking for some good detail shots, but it just didn't happen; I hope practice makes patience.

Good Morning Everyone,

With the purchase of my new camera, I decided that I'd start a new photography blog. The new blog will contain articles about my life as a photographer. There will be instructional articles about using the D300 or photography in general (using my experience as a technical writer) or informational articles about the photography world (using my experience as a journalist).

This blog will remain as a photo gallery so those of you who just want to see my pictures can remain subscribed to this blog without being interrupted by my photography articles.

New Camera: Nikon D300

Today I upgraded my primary camera body from the Nikon D70, which I purchased in June of 2004, to the Nikon D300. I am very pleased with the four years of use I got out of the D70, but I am also ready for a major functionality upgrade.

For the last year or so I've been telling myself that I'd use the D70 until Nikon released a prosumer body that used a full-frame sensor. That plan changed last week when Nikon announced the Nikon D700 body. I figured that the D700 would be my new body because it uses a full-frame sensor, however the price tag (approx. $3000) does not place it in the prosumer category. Therefore, I decided to purchase the current top-of-the-line Nikon prosumer body, the Nikon D300.

The Nikon D300 is an amazing camera and fits all of my previous requirements for a new body, except for its lack of a full-frame sensor. I'm sure I'll get at least another four years out of this body, as I did with the D70.

The timing for the purchase is right because I have a photo workshop coming up in early August. I can't wait to use my new body, but I need to learn all of its ins and outs first, so these next few weeks will be full of education and experimentation.

Hello all,

I don't have an image for you today, but I do have a request. I would like you to take a look at a slide show that I've set up over at my other web site www.lanescheideman.com.

I am hoping that you will critique those photos because I am planning on entering a juried exhibition at the Newspace Center for Photography, a local photography resource center and gallery. Based on your feedback, I'll be able to pick which images I should submit.

The slide show exhibits 24 photos that I really like and I feel show of my talents as a photographer, but I will only be submitting 5 of them, which is where you come in.

I would first like you to take a look through the slide show and pick out your ten favorites. You can decide by using your gut feeling, looking closely at composition, paying special attention to the emotion of the shot, or basically because one makes prominent use of your favorite color.

Once you have the top ten decided, I’d like you to then pick the top five and then rank them in order from first to fifth; I would also appreciate you telling me why you prefer those photos.

Please respond before April 28th with:

Your top five ranked list, along with any comments
Your name and email

Cedar: A Photo Essay

This past Saturday was to be a nice lazy day around the house. It started a little overcast, but held great promise of the coming Spring.

That is until my neighbor came knocking on my door. "We have a tree issue," she said.
I had hardly finished my first cup of coffee when I headed outside and saw the issue to which she was referring.

One of my cedar trees, which had a split top, had decided to go visit my neighbor's house. Fortunately for them, their maple tree decided to intervene.

Following are a couple more detail shots of the spar and its precarious perch.

Based on this situation we decided we should contact a tree service, luckily both of us had used a company in the past and were very happy with their work.

The foreman was on site in about an hour and gave us the good and bad news. Good, they could do it today; Bad, it wasn't going to be cheap. Compared to the cost to the tree falling on my neighbor's house and the other spar (you'll see it later) falling on mine, we decided to get it done.

A two-man crew came out and anchored the "former" top of the spar to the limbs of the maple tree and anchored the still-attached spar to the rest of the cedar.

Once the spar was cut, the crew was able to control the fall of the spar into the narrow area between our houses, missing my fence, my neighbor's deck, the power main going to my neighbor's house, the houses, and most importantly themselves.

It was amazing to watch it unfold. Oh for a quality video camera.

Once the rogue spar was grounded, the crew's attention was turned to the remaining spar still perched atop the remainder of the cedar. As you can see in the image the remaining spar tapers down to just a semi-circle where the split occurred. Both Dave and I were not comfortable with leaving the spar up.

Dave took a few furtive glances at the tree, scoped out my back yard, made his selection and began cutting... felling it perfectly into my backyard, where it pounded down on the bank in my back yard and stayed put. Perfect shot.

The Machine

This is a detail photo of an aircraft's engine, taken at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon. I am horrible at notetaking when taking pictures, so I'm not sure what type of plane this is.

This image is of Oregon's Mount Hood taken from the grounds of Timberline Lodge.

This image may look familiar to regular visitors of my photo gallery, because I used it back in 2005. That was when I was trying out new photo editing features, I've since learned that instead of making the image look different is nowhere near as interesting as making it look right.

Left Crow: Did this guy just call us Heckle and Jeckle? Doesn't he know that they were magpies?
Right Crow: He may not know his cartoon-ornithology, but that is a sweet lens he's using. I think it is a Nikkor 80-200 f2.8.
