One of London's seminal venues, its 70s pub rock and punk pedigree is legendary. The list of bands who have played there is endless .. Madness, U2, The Damned, XTC, The Stranglers, Spandau Ballet ... it's pretty much the smallest venue with the smallest stage I can think of still hosting regular shows. If you get 50 people in there, they're shoulder to shoulder.

I found out about Gestir about a year ago when some of the very learned music fans on the forum of West Ham's fans website Knees Up Mother Brown. To the lazy and uninitiated it would be easy to compare them to Iceland's Sigur Ros, as they both create beautiful landscapes of sound and soft vocal harmonies. But there is more than a bit of Radiohead involved and I am sure I can detect a bit of early 90s shoegaze too, although no one else in the small but appreciative crowd would admit it (possibly because they're too young to remember ...)

The band played a shortish set of six songs, including two new compositions in English, It's Over and Crashing. A new album is planned and will feature more songs in English rather than their native Faroese.

Recommended listening: Gestir's one album to date, Burtur Frá Toftunum, with the stand out tracks being Sum Urt, Mitt Í Verðini and Dogg. You can see them at www.myspace.com/gestir.

Paulhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16509474726586902315noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13949263.post-48118961190928395102008-07-07T20:22:00.001+01:002008-07-07T20:22:36.936+01:00Bloc Party - Mercury (new single)

Bloody hell, where's the guitars?

New single premiered for the first time on some BBC station today. We Are Here and Tonight You Are The Special One (nothing to do with Chelsea). The latter album was released on Polygram and it's hard to imagine a major label taking such a risk on such a band these days - a 30-something collection which included a former JoBoxer, Martin Fry out of ABC's brother and a headbanging Japanese guy whose contribution other than, erm, standing on stage headbanging was so limited he made Bez look like a multi-instrumentalist.

They first came to my attention when the short-lived "we're XFM, a REAL indie radio station" (copyright 1997-1998) A-listed The SAS And The Glam That Goes With It. In the early days of the UK version of MTV2 (circa 1999), viewers could choose an hour's worth of videos on their website and I managed to get Come Taste My Mind a rare TV showing, which I recorded for posterity and subseqently Youtubed here:

I was lucky enough to see them live about 10 years ago a the Electric Palace in Camden supporting Kenickie, with a friend who clearly hated them. I was pretty much mesmerised by the whole set - probably the best support slot I've had the good fortune not to ignore.

The bastion of all world knowledge that is Wikipedia describes them as a hybrid of glam rock, Kraftwerk and the Fall, and I can't really argue with that.

No firm news of how and when it happened but his last record label, Planting Seeds, reports that it was in the last couple of days, and posters on JAMC message boards suggested it was cancer.

Earl Brutus - The SAS And The Glam That Goes With It.mp3
Earl Brutus - Midland Red.mp3
Earl Brutus - Come Taste My Mind.mp3Paulhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16509474726586902315noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13949263.post-74895281244339795602008-06-08T21:44:00.001+01:002008-06-08T21:46:04.959+01:00Radiohead cover Portishead's "The Rip"Just love this video, the fact that such a big band can cover such a song and then post a lo-fi version of it up on the net.

First post in months? Is it me, or is it them?

A guy gets on a long-distance flight. He's just getting comfortable when somebody sits down next to him. He looks up and wow, it's Garry Kasparov. Kasparov basks for a moment in the recognition.

Some way into the flight, the meals are cleared away and Garry produces an elegant little wooden travel chess set. He begins to play. After a while Kasparov asks the guy whether he would like to play chess to kill time. The guy replies, 'Hey Garry, You think I don't know who you are? I can't compete with a world champion.'

Kasparov - 'How about if I play left handed ?'

The guy thinks about this for a minute, then agrees. He is demolished in 8 moves, and is inconsolable for the rest of the journey. On landing he meets his friend, who asks him how the flight was. 'It was terrible,' he says. 'Completely humiliating. I love the venue though, with its unfeasibly large stage, classic "restricted view" columns, excellent sound system and

If you have no idea who they are, they were briefly one of the biggest bands in the country, peaking in 1996 with a number 1 album (Expecting To Fly), a number 2 single (Slight Return - held off the top by the wonderful Babylon Zoo) and 3 other top ten hits. If you had no idea they were still going, 2003's Luxembourg and last year's new and eponymous album gives a lot more of the same.Paulhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16509474726586902315noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13949263.post-1169987460008574062007-01-28T12:24:00.000Z2007-01-28T12:31:00.036ZKate Bush ruined my Saturday nightI was having a very pleasant Saturday night watching crap programme after crap programme on the TV, when UKTV G2 decided to ruin it by playing this clip of Kate Bush on Top of the Pops:

This was new to me; I would imagine this was one of her final appearances on TOTP. It also made me reflect upon the Futureheads' version - despite me voting it very highly in my 2005 singles of the year (link here), it really sound a bit shite next to the original now. Maybe I'm just saying that because the Futureheads' output after that was so weak compared to the first album.

The song brings back great memories for two reasons. Around the time that Ms Bush was on TOTP singing "take my shoes off and throw them in the lake", I was witness to Grant Wickham trying and failing to throw Peter Hamberger's shoes (bizarrely, at the latter's request) from one side of the pond at Coopers' Coborn school in Upminster. For some reaason my mind always harks back to that day.Paulhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16509474726586902315noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13949263.post-1167644346965742602007-01-01T09:35:00.000Z2007-01-01T09:39:06.986ZThings Can Only Get BetterThis was the first record I played in 2007.

Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain - Miss Dy-na-mi-tee.mp3

(Actually it's great. The top 10s were as follows:

SINGLES

1. Killers - When You Were Young
2. Fratellis - Chelsea Dagger
3. Amy Winehouse - Rehab
4. Razorlight - America
5. Arctic Monkeys - When The Sun Goes Down
6. Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
7. Kasabian - Empire
8. Strokes - You Only Live Once
9. View - Wasted Little DJs
10. Automatic - Monster

ALBUMS

1. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
2. Killers - Sam's Town
3. Rifles - No Love Lost
4. Muse - Black Holes And Revelations
5. Kooks - Inside In/Inside Out
6. Razorlight - Razorlight
7. Fratellis - Costello Music
8. Kasabian - Empire
9. Young Knives - Voices Of Animals And Men
10. Feeling - Twelve Stops And Home

A lot of the names are perhaps quite predictable but I think the winners of "Punching Above Their Weight" are the Rifles - there's a disproportionate amount of fans among the West Ham faithful. I saw them on the second stage at V and there was a mere scattering of people watching them, but they clearly have a lot of support. Good to see the Young Knives' album up high too, it's one of the genuinely innovative records of the year imho.

And how can a song with Chelsea in the title get so many votes from West Ham fans? I look forward to the Fratellis' next single, a rendition of "Stick Your Blue Flag ..."

Here are the other albums and singles voted for. Some very interesting choices in each top 30 ....

Singles

11. New Young Pony Club - Ice Cream
12. Rifles - Peace and Quiet
13. Art Brut - Nag Nag Nag Nag
14. I interviewed Jake Shillingford before the show and he didn't seem to know if they would come back for a third reunion show (the first was next door at the Mean Fiddler in May), and he's got two albums coming out next year, one with current band Exileinside and a solo album, so he's got plenty to keep him busy at the moment.

Photos of My Life Story:

<a
