Proverbs 3

This chapter contains a couple of my favorite verses… “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” ~ Proverbs 3: 5-6

How many times have you prayed about something or questioned why something has happened to you or one of your loved ones? I know I do it on a regular basis. I think that is where these verses come in…. We can’t see the whole picture, we only see a very small piece and for us to try to understand the reason why something happened is foolish. We are called to trust in the Lord with “ALL” our hearts and not to trust our own understanding.

What areas of your life do you not trust in Him completely? all of your work, all of your finances, or all of your relationships? I know there are a few that need to work on.

Proverbs in 31 Days – Day 2

Proverbs in 31 Days … I decided to join this group and tackle Proverbs. Other than the occasional quote I read here or there I never delved too deep into this book. So over the next 31 days I am going to read through all the chapters in Proverbs, one chapter a day and use my blog as sort of a online journal and share anything that sticks out.

Day 2

Proverbs 2

The goal of the book of Proverbs is to describe and instill “wisdom” in God’s people, a wisdom that is founded in the “fear of the Lord” (taken from the ESV Study Bible).

Proverbs 2:5

“then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.” Well I just had to keep reading and I would have had my answer to my question yesterday.

Proverbs 2:7-8

“he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity,
guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints.”

This entire chapter is a great one. If we as believers intently search after him we will gain wisdom and understanding, and he promises to be our shield along our way! What a great promise.

Day 1

Proverbs 1

The goal of the book of Proverbs is to describe and instill “wisdom” in God’s people, a wisdom that is founded in the “fear of the Lord” (taken from the ESV Study Bible).

Proverbs 1:7

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;” this verse stood out to me. Maybe because I never really understood the “fear of the Lord” part of the Bible. What I found really helped me to understand that statement and take it to heart. I was interested to find that the word Fear has a few meanings and one of those is “Extreme reverence or awe, as toward a supreme power”. Now that is pretty cool. To fear God is to have extreme reverence or awe towards Him. However, I believe that a believer and unbeliever have separate meanings for “the fear of the Lord”. For an unbeliever fear of the Lord is the fear of judgment and eternal death which is eternal separation form God. So for the believer verse 7 states that the beginning of knowledge is the fear of the Lord. I would take that to mean, to hold God in reverence and awe because He is the supreme power is the very beginning of wisdom. I also think that the more we come to know about God the more awe we have for Him.

All in all I was pleasantly surprised with what I took away from the first chapter and am really looking forward to the rest of Proverbs. I would really suggest taking the time to take this 31 day challenge. If you are doing it what did you take away from today’s reading?

Let's Get Creative.... sometimes I need some motivation to get creative so my sister and I decided to do a photo project.

A-Z Photo Project -
Starting tomorrow we will start with 'A' and each day after that is a new letter in alphabetical order.

Rules
1.) Picture must be taken every day.
2.) Must follow A-Z
3.) Can use any camera (even a phone camera)
4.) Must be posted on a social media site before noon the next day (i.e. flickr, twitter, facebook, or your blog)

A Letter to Emmy...

5 Years ago today we were blessed with you Emilee. I am really not sure where the time goes. It seems like just yesterday you were laying on the floor at our house in Michigan trying to figure out how to roll over. Now you can't sit still. In less than a month you will be starting school and you will enter the world that isn't protected by me. I pray that you keep your sweet and caring heart even though at times it will be hard. In the short time that you have been in our lives you have taught us a lot about compassion and respect for others. I love the way you first thought is always about the other person. Please don't change. You know, not a day goes by that I don't thank the Lord for you. Happy Birthday!

My Prayer :
Thank You Lord for blessing us with so a priceless gift. Lord please give me the strength and ability to prepare her to be a light in a very dark world. I pray that I will be the father that you created me to be. Let me be the light that Emmy can look towards for encouragement.

Dog Days of Summer

I have been thinking.... The dog days of summer are here in the state of SC, and they aren't much better than the dog days of winter that I have experienced in MI. Except one nice thing is they don't last near as long as the winter does in MI. But one bad thing is I find myself feeling guilty for sitting inside on these days. Maybe it goes back to living in MI when you took advantage of every summer day you had or maybe the fact that it looks so nice out (that quickly changes once you walk out of the A/C). Either way I am ready for it to be over, and we still have one of the worst months left.

This state of affairs is not surprising, considering both cases were based on lies. Norma McCorvey, the “Jane Roe” of Roe v. Wade, lied to her lawyers about being raped. But she at least was pregnant and seeking an abortion. Sandra Cano, the “Mary Doe” of Doe v. Bolton, wasn’t even pregnant. She was a homeless mother seeking a divorce and custody of her children. Her legal-aid attorney, recognizing a poorly educated sucker when she saw one, filed the case under false pretenses.

Those weren’t the only lies. One of the rationales cited in Roe was the supposed number of women dying from illegal abortions—allegedly in the tens of thousands. But Bernard Nathanson, founder of the National Abortion Rights Action League, later said the numbers were simply made up. During the debate over partial-birth abortion a few years ago, the pro-abortion side claimed the procedure was rare—as if even one case of puncturing the skull of an infant and sucking out its brains would be acceptable. (Imagine the outcry from the folks at PETA if someone were to do that to, say, a rat.) But Ron Fitzsimmons of the National Association of Abortion Providers later admitted, “We lied through our teeth.” The gruesome procedure was performed more than a thousand times a year, sometimes for a “birth defect” as minor as a cleft palate

The holidays are upon us and what better way to celebrate them than with the classic movie A Christmas Story. Humor and trivia magazine Mental Floss recently published 12 tidbits about the film you probably didn't know.

Not to be outdone, we've added 20 more. Both lists should give you enough ammunition to amaze your friends and family during repeated viewings.

First, here are the dozen facts presented by Mental Floss. You can read full details on each at their web site.

Jack Nicholson was very interested in playing Ralphie’s dad.
Bob Clark directed sex comedy Porky's in 1982, a year A Christmas Story.
Ralphie says he wants a Red Ryder BB Gun 28 times throughout the movie.
Peter Billingsley (Ralphie) was an executive producer on Iron Man.
Mythbusters tested the tongue-sticking-to-metal pole phenomenon.
Scott Schwartz (Flick) worked as an adult film actor for a time.
You can tour the house used for filming in Cleveland.
Bob Clark has inspired to make the movie after hearing author (and movie narrator) Jean Shepherd read from his short story collection on the radio.
TV's The Wonder Years was inspired by the movie.
Real Red Ryder BB Guns were first made in 1938.
In addition to the gun, you can buy replicas of the leg lamp, Lifebuoy soap, and decoder pin used in the movie.
A sequel, My Summer Story a.k.a. It Runs in the Family, featuring a totally different cast was released in 1994.

Always the ones to go above and beyond, we now present 20 more trivia bits about the beloved movie.

Director Bob Clark and his adult son were both killed in an L.A. car accident in 2007. A drunk driver crossed the median and struck Clark's Infinit Q-30 head-on. The man received six years prison sentence for vehicular manslaughter.
The last movie directed by Bob Clark in 2004, SuperBabies: Baby Geniuses 2 remains one of the worst reviewed movies on IMDb with a 1.7 rating on a 10 point scale.
Bob Clark plays the Parker family neighbor who ogles the leg lamp from outside.
Peter Billingsley was notable prior to the movie for his numerous TV commercial appearances. He starred as "Messy Mervin" in a series of ads for Hershey's chocolate syrup. He was also a regular on the NBC TV series "Real People" with Sarah Purcell and Byron Allen.
Billingsley makes a brief appearance in another Christmas favorite, 2003's Elf. He plays a spectacled worker in Santa's workshop.
Along with his friend Brian Evans, Peter released the holiday CD "Christmas Stories... Christmas Songs" in 1999.
During his work on Iron Man, Billingsley posed with friend and director Jon Favreau for a photo featuring guns used during production. Rather than grasping the modern weaponry, Peter is shown holding the beloved Red Ryder gun.
Zack Ward, who played yellow-eyed bully Scut Farkus, continues to have a successful acting career. He appeared in the movies Transformers, Postal, and BloodRayne II. He was also a regular on the TV sitcom Titus.
Yano Anaya, the kid who played Scut Farkus' toadie Grover Dill, also played ~~the paperboy in Better Off Dead who repeatedly demands "I Want My Two Dollars!"~~ Thanks to reader Wayne for this correction. Yano played another paperboy in the movie. It was Demian Slade who played Johnny, the "two dollars" paperboy. Since this fact has been nullified, in its place we present The Christmas Story Drinking Game.
There is a scene deleted from the movie where Ralphie has a Flash Gordon fantasy.
A Christmas Story grossed around $19 million during its run theaters, a respectable amount for the time.
According to IMDb, the Ralphie Parker, Randy Parker, Flick, Schwartz, et al, characters created by Jean Shepherd first appeared in the 1976 made-for-TV movie "The Phantom of the Open Hearth." Ralphie Parker was also played by Matt Dillon and Jerry O'Connell in the TV movies "The Great American Fourth of July and Other Disasters" (1982) and Ollie Hopnoddle's Haven of Bliss (1988).
Many people have attempted to establish the year in which the movie takes place. The Parkers' 1937 Oldsmobile, the 1940 "speedomatic" Little Orphan Annie decoder badge, and the 1936 (or '46) trade of White Sox pitcher Bullfrog Bill Dietrich are cited but none resolve to a specific year.
The film is set in a fictional Indiana town named Hulman. It's based on Shepherd's hometown of Hammond, a city southeast of Chicago. The movie was filmed in Cleveland with other parts shot in Toronto.
The last name of actress Melinda Dillon (Ralphie's mom) is misspelled as "Dillion" during the end credits.
If you look closely, you can see 1980s model cars driving by the school during the flagpole scene.
A three-day convention was held in Cleveland in November to honor the 25th anniversary of the movie. Eight original cast members were on hand for autographs.
Two fans of the movie produced the Road Trip for Ralphie documentary which visits more than 15 locations used in the movie.
There is also a 75-minute documentary titled Shooting Your Eye Out: The Untold 'Christmas Story' with never-before-seen on-set photos and interviews.

Cable TV network TNT first ran its 24-hour marathon showing of the movie in 1988. The repeating airing of the movie 12 times in a row (now on sister station TBS) has become a Christmas Eve tradition.
