My buddy Scott French up in Santa Cruz has been churning out some unreal hand-planes for the purpose of bodysurfing; i've been using mine mainly for itty bitty hollow waves and the lift you get is pretty amazing considering their size...push it out in front and away you go, bring it in and hold it under you and wait for the barrel.

There are now some 650,000 or so of these brilliant, big-beaked buggers, and I couldn't be happier about it...heres to hoping that our good friends keep poppin' out them babies, even if they aren't super cute...at least they're majestic...

Website Update!

Okay, enough with the pretty pictures (i lie...there's more coming tonight...).

There are some updates on the PC website if you care to check it out, new models added in the Glider section (D.bowls and Miniglider) and a new Stub also (Pinky). There is new info in the ordering section for you international guys, too!

I've hooked up with some wonderful people abroad who want to spread the PC seed, and now will be taking custom orders all over Europe.

Boards can be shaped by me and mailed over, or to save you guys some $, they can be shaped in the UK by new crew member Tim Mason, a well respected hull fanatic!

I couldn't be happier with the new changes, but all in all, its more the same than ever :)

Count Duckula, Unveiled

6'8" x 22 3/4" x 2 1/4" bottom halfer hull named Count Duckula. This design also by K.Ablers, nearly 3 hour shaping execution by me...this is officially, and by far the most difficult and challenging board I have ever shaped. Nearly flat deck, full hull bottom, the rails are that of a flex spoon; that's to say pretty round on bottom (not the full bladed rails on boards like the hullibut), and the top half is flattened off.

The tail will be a glass flex panel, and is templated off the Gull, wider, trash-can style.

I will do my best to post more detailed shots of the shape, but its likely that photos may never convey exactly what is going on here, as with most of the shapes I do...best viewed in person, as always.

I don't know what else to say about this shape other than it is a complete mind f*ck and i couldn't shape anything else the rest of the day.

Why are my hulls so bladed?

Okay, my hulls are necessarily THIN, thickness wise, but they are very bladed on a regular basis, and this is why.

Take a foiled hull (im sorry my mini-model is PERFECT, but it'll illustrate this for me just fine). Full S-Deck, rolled bottom, 50/50 rails, everything is good times:

The long line across the board depicts the waterline/flow on an average burried bottom turn, the dots are your foot placement more or less, the point at which your force is applied:

A cross section of that line, the water's path and the shape that it flows around then, is a basic hydrodynamic foil...like your fin's foil. It creates lift and DRIVE:

When you put your hull on rail, when foiled well and the elements are placed correctly, your board becomes a lift generating foil. The more prescise your foil is (entry foil is your nose rail, exit foil is the thickness of your tail), the more efficient your board is, the more is effectively displaces water and creates lift...

EFFICIENT SPEED.

6'1 x 21 x 2 5/8 stirngerless EPS stubbins. This shape has the deepest roots in my design theory/backlog...I've shaped them and variations of them for myself for the past three years and love them as a daily driver in shorter or mushier waves. Reefs, beachbreaks etc. Lots of hull elements, lots of mush-busting skills too.

This is the first EPS version I've done, and i the 4th generation of the shape...I'm happy to introduce, Pinky.

Here's something interesting I've been working on for a couple seasons now that I thought I'd share with you guys. I was recently asked what I'm stoked on right now and aside from my alltime favorite board, the new paisley one, this is it.

What we've got goin' on here are hull curves and basics (rail line, s-deck, rails, rocker) fitting into a more user-friendly template for average waves.. This design/style is my board of choice in reef and beachbreaks normally.

They trim and bottom turn like a hull, full railed and fast (singlefins pushed up!!) but when you get back over the fin it turns like a modern singlefin. It also allows a fair amount of snap off the top on a good section, and long, springy, connected roundhouses off the whitewater.

The bottom shape is a belly into rounded tri-plane with a double concave within, that transfers to single out the fin and tail, making the board easy and not sticky rail to rail, but fast when you dig that hull rail line into a bottom turn or lock into trim. If you flatten off the tri-plane area in the nose and mid section into a harder edge, you're going to have a much quicker, skate-like feel (i'd suggest a twin fin setup at that point, like murray and mimmons). The design is translating into pretty much everything I do these days, shorter stubby board share much of the shape, as do my bladed hulls...its becoming a very nice all around flow master that I'm very proud of!

this board holds what may be my favorite fins ever...brought back a bunch of yellow cedar from a trip to the northwest (home) a few winters ago and made a very few sets of those!
