Over the next few blog posts, I will be sharing a series of shots I took last week while exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Nelson county region of western Virgina. Nothing serious. In fact, it's the lack of seriousness and a shot list that make these images special to me. Sharing, exploring and having a camera with me to create images is one of the many reasons why I love photography so much.

These are from a recent advertizing campaign with the Marketing Machine and the way cool Margaux's restaurant in North Raleigh. The interior had some cool flame artwork that I wanted to incorporate into his portrait. Three speedlights and 70-200 lens for this one.

The campaign also called for an outdoor shot of their new patio area.

I snapped a picture of Mario preppeing his Peach &Pistachio tart. We shot several items for an upcoming magazine article. Having looked at these photos for a couple hours now, I can kick myself in the butt for not taking a slice home!

iPhone as a Polaroid

The iPhone is the first phone I've ever had with a usable camera. I never imagined the iPhone camera would become a tool for artistic expression. I guess if your eye is always looking for “the shot”, having a camera in your pocket (no matter the quality) will satisfy the occasional creative urge. I never had a Polaroid instant camera as a youth, but I sure did hunger for one. The instant delivery of the finished product made everyone smile.

Today, my instant camera is the iPhone. I have the ability to take a quick shot and share it (almost) instantly by uploading it to Flickr or my Facebook account for all of my friends and family to see. I also enjoy the creative tools the Iphone allows me to have “in camera”. I shoot, process and deliver the image all within my phone. I have several photo programs on my iPhone with Photogene
and Camerabag being my favorite two applications. Photogene is my Photoshop type application, allowing me to crop, adjust exposure, saturation etc... and Camerabag is more the creative filter type application with a Holga type filter among my favorites.

I enjoy the technical limitations of the iPhone camera. You know what they say, it's not the camera but rather the photographer. Processing within the phone and sharing it among friends is a unique way to provide creative posts to a sometimes bland and boring Facebook. I have to give props to pro photographer, Chase Jarvis, for sharing his creative iPhone photos and helping me to open my creative eye with the iPhone camera.

I took off yesterday on my bicycle with a Nikon in my bag. No plan other than I knew I wanted to stop at an old farm house I had passed a thousand times. Carolina blue skys, 30 miles and several images later; I came back with some personal stuff. I have an ongoing image project of old windows that I visit once and a while and it was a nice break from the corporate imagery of late. All processing done in Lightroom.

I love the nested noodles here and the specular highlights across the veggies.

Macho Gazpacho!
This cold soup tastes awesome and is extremely healthy. It's one of Chef Mario's top sellers.

Garden Salad. Simple and effective. I purposely tried not to have my plates always leaning left!

Chef Mario and the team have our food shoots down pretty well. With this shoot, I opted to go low drag and used only two SB-800 speed lights plus reflectors. The yellow background in the pasta shot is a simple piece of cardboard! I roll in, set up and usually nail it pretty quick. Very much a Strobist style.
