Or a letter? A parcel? No, well neither have I.

Of late I've been taking a note of the legal disclaimer mumbo-jumbo that appears at the foot of an increasing number of emails. Like this one:

"The information contained in this message and any attachments may be confidential information and may be subject to legal privilege, public interest or legal profession privilege. If you are not the intended recipient, any use, disclosure or copying of this message or any attachments is unauthorised. If you have received this document in error, please advise the sender. No representation or warranty is given that attached files are free from viruses or other defects. The recipient assumes all responsibility for any loss or damage resulting directly or indirectly from the use of any attached files."

On a couple of occasions I've received three line emails with 10 line disclaimers and I must admit that I have a good chuckle. When was the last time ... or for that matter, the first time, you heard of someone being sued over reading a confidential email, or loss of damage because they downloaded a file?

If we don't put this type of disclaimer on every letter, parcel or anything else we distribute, why does it have to go on email? I understand the difference when people are giving professional advice eg, relating to the share market, or medical advice, but general communication between people ... give me a break!

I never send email to the wrong person. I send business email to people whom I wish to communicate with and people who wish to communicate with me. It's that simple. If anything, everything I write is Copyright and that law relates to copying and distribution of my email as well as any other intellectual work. If the person to whom it is addressed receives it and chooses to do something else with it, it's hardly my fault and they may well have breached the Copyright Act.

If I send something so confidential that I don't want it to be read by someone other than the sender, I encrypt it and send it as a secured message that can only be decrypted and accessed by the recipient. However, it's only rarely that I have to take these types of precautions.

Rather than post this type of disclaimer on your emails, isn't it better to take care to send them to the right recipient?

Robin

PS: I use Group Mail Personal for mass email distribution. When I email a sales or help line, I usually receive an automated response advising that a full response to my email will be provided within three days.

Three days is far too long. Someone with a problem wants it solved now ... today, not in three days. Unless of course, it's not urgent, but when I email help lines, only a few companies asked me to rate the degree of urgency.

It's okay, in fact, it's essential to have automated responses to calls for help. However, instead of stating that someone will look into the problem and advise you in three days, why not offer a link to an FAQ page or include in the email details of common questions people have and hope that they will be able to answer the emailer's query?

Why not place a small advert in the email?

Why not offer a link to articles about the firm's products or services?

Every email you send should have an option to make money, otherwise it's a lost opportunity.

Think about how you are using your email system and whether it could be increasing your business income earning activities. You'll probably be able to identify a few lost opportunities. If you can't give me a call on +61 8 89520786 and I'll take a look for you.

Robin

Robinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11768713486383482322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13720690.post-77626291206065779882009-04-20T12:26:00.006+09:302009-04-20T13:07:46.574+09:30Complying With Best Practice for E-CommerceDoes your Internet site exhibit Best Practice? You have no idea what best practice is for Internet sites or whether your site exhibits it?

Obviously best practice can be a subjective topic with different interpretations from country to country. The Australian Government has issued "Australian Guidelines for E-Commerce" that cover best practice for Australian Internet sites and includes sites with an Australian clientele.

Several of the guidelines relate to legal requirements in Australia eg, regarding disabled users and privacy and not misleading in advertising. There are other topics such as providing your contact details on your sites that are also included.

If you have an Australian site, it's a great plug for your business to be able to show that you meet Australian e-commerce best practice requirements.

One of the services I provide at Desert Wave Enterprises is reviewing sites and advising clients whether they are meeting best practice requirements and complying with privacy and disability legislation. For a small investment, you can improve your image and know that you won't run foul of the Australian Government's legal system.

Like to know more? If so, how good is your hit rate?

When I ran the business and computing department of a large college, I developed a reputation for winning government tenders. It was largely due to the fact that I: attended to detail, provided the funding department the information they wanted in a way they could read it, maintained a good working relationship with funding bodies, and followed up on the few programs I didn't win to find out how I could have done better
My colleagues thought I had some secret formula. But, I didn't. Instead of trotting out the same old pre-formatted proposal that had been submitted year in and year out, I devised an alternative, improved version. I always changed it to suit an individual request for tender or proposal and frequently demonstrated how I could provide additional value for money.

If your hit rate is less than it should be, maybe you need help. They come from a range of legal firms, banks, government agencies, and Fortune 500 firms that ALL have a free email account to which I am required to respond. Guess what I do with these emails?

Yes, you guessed it ... I delete them without a second glance. Quite clearly they are spam emails endeavouring to screw some of my hard-earned millions out of me.

Now, it's not only the free email address that is a dead give-away, it's also the spelling, grammar and layout; no self-respecting firm would send such a poorly written and formatted email.

My point is this: If you have just ended your career as a nuclear physicist working at NASA to sell Herbalife or earn money on some secret MLM program that is earning you millions of dollars every single month AND you have a free email address, how seriously do you expect to be taken?

Even if you have a legitimate business like mine that earns a comfortable sum, but not millions per month, you can't afford to use a free email address. It's just so penny-pinching it's incredible and says a lot about you and your business. Yes, it says that you are cheap and probably not as successful as you'd have people believe.

I mean, would you deal with a law firm whose address was lawyers@hotmail.com? I sure as hell wouldn't. Maybe I'm an email address snob ... so be it.

Do you know how much it costs to get a URL (Universal Resource Locator or something that looks like http://www.dwave.com.au)with an email address? Peanuts. Having your own URL and email address adds a little prestige and has benefits in being found on the Internet, especially if your product is your URL.

If you want to get 10 email addresses, web building and hosting, and a URL of your own choosing, you could try Global Domains International (they have a seven day trial)who will provide all that and more for a miserable $10 per month.

Alternatively, go to Go-Daddy which also has some remarkably low-cost URLs and email services that you buy as much of or as litle of as you want.

If you are serious about your business, you really need a URL and an email address to go with it. Imagine: www.you-inc.com for your URL and yourname@you-inc.com. Doesn't that look a whole lot more professional?

Robin
http://www.dwave.com.au
robin@dwave.com.au

Robinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11768713486383482322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13720690.post-87547549047252738712009-02-11T15:03:00.004+09:302009-02-11T21:15:23.913+09:30Your Site's Text: Is it Grammatically Perfect?Often when I visit sites the first thing I notice is the sub-standard grammar, syntax and spelling. I email them, tell them I have spotted numerous errors and offer to fix them for a modest fee.

For an hour or so of my time, and a few dollars, they can rest assured their written work is excellent and reflects well on their business image.

If I haven't yet stumbled upon your Internet site, but you'd like to have me run my pedantic, all-seeing eye over it, please comment here and I'll put your URL on the visit list.

Robin

Robinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11768713486383482322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13720690.post-5012217264364056332009-01-05T11:15:00.007+09:302009-01-05T11:33:40.240+09:30Incredibly Simple, Sensible IdeasThere are always people coming up with simple, sensible ideas and I wonder, "Why didn't I think of that?"

Some bright spark came up with the idea of a sans-serif font that has blank circles in it, which will reduce ink use.

When the typeface is enlarged, you can see the blank spot circles easily, which can become a new design feature.

When the font is used at normal sizes, however, you can't see the blank circles (now dots) and the total amount of ink used is reduced by about 20%.

Now, I'm not that poor that I have to worry about a few hundred bucks each year for laser cartridge replacements.

But if I had a huge company that pumped out thousands of reams of paper per day, like a bank or mortgage company, use of this font over a 12 month period could save some serious hoot.

So, here's a simple idea that sounds less outlandish as you think about it.

What do you think? What Does That Mean? Most organisations have a tag line that states what they do. It should be short, crisp and succinct, but do we always know exactly what they mean?. Maybe not.

My tag line for Desert Wave Enterprises is:

Robin helps businesses succeed through applying smart software, winning communication practices and timely information.

Just what does that mean?

There's three parts. "applying smart software" means that I sell a range of software that will help you improve your business (or personal) performance. This software includes email automation and management software to alleviate the number one time waster in firms ... email. Also, I sell link management software so you can manage your link management program to increase site traffic. Then there's anti-spam software, and ... I think you get the drift.

The second part "winning communication practices" means that I can fix up your letters, design your communication strategy, set up autoresponders in your email system, and do other communication tasks that will improve your relationship with your clients or increase sales. For example, a firm that wants a weekly blog entry for its site but hasn't got time to write it can hire me to do that. Alternatively, you can send me your letter templates and I'll check grammar, spelling, format and let you know if they could be improved.

Last is "timely information". I sell a number of ebooks that provide just-in-time information eg, if you need to do a training needs assessment of your firm and don't know how to do it, my ebook sets it all out simply. An increasing number of ebooks will hit the shelves in the new year.

So, there you have it. Everything I do (well almost) is expressed in one sentence.

Why not let us know what your tag line is and have an opportunity to promote your business? Comment today.

Robin

Robinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11768713486383482322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13720690.post-74857282222410875092008-12-04T16:03:00.001+09:302008-12-04T16:34:16.682+09:30Coming Soon to DWAVEAs I do every year, I have been reviewing my strategic plan for the year ahead and making some adjustments here and there. It's a good opportunity to think about where you have been, where you are going and if where you are going is where you want to go ... if that makes sense. (If it doesn't, read it again and again until it does!)

One area of opportunity I think I have identified is the large number of small and micro businesses that don't have an Internet site. I've come up with a very low cost solution for which I'm currently working on sales pages, example sites and so on. In mid-January I intend to launch it. I don't want to give any more away now, but it's an excellent solution for businesses that want an Internet presence but can't afford, or don't want to pay huge amounts.

I've got a couple of additional ebooks to write to fill niches where I believe there is an unmet demand. I've mentioned them in my plan.

Also, I dabble in different ways to earn passive income and have found that MLM has been superseded by GPT ... Get Paid Today. I never did have a lot of faith in MLM. I know that some people have done very well with it, usually the early adopters who create program after program and suck up the money of those unfortunates below who keep feeding them and make nothing.

Well, I found that the new breed of network marketer wants immediate income, not to have to pay out for years realising a loss before starting to make a small trickle. People are impatient. A smart cookie has devised a GPT program where someone else pays your $47 joining fee and then you pay your first downline member's fee. It comes with a swag of ebooks, software and you have to subscribe to a $10 per month arrangement that covers the cost of the resaleable ebooks and software ... you get private label rights.

If you have tried MLM and failed (or even if you are making millions selling weight loss products or special miracle drinks), you could listen to the video that explains it all much better than I do.
You'll find it if you click on the banner below this post.

I've joined up, mainly for the ebook and software downloads because I can resell them. If you sign up from here, I'll pay your $47 joining fee.

Some other things I have in my new plan involve cleaning up some of my sites, more aggressive advertising campaigns etc.

I'm looking forward to a profitable and interesting 2009 and feel more confident with a strategy to guide my daily work and long term efforts.

Robin

Robinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11768713486383482322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13720690.post-37902490835687076722008-11-17T13:04:00.002+09:302008-11-17T13:40:40.332+09:30Business Tip: Put Your Contact Details On EverythingSo, you've got your name plastered all over your business. Everyone who walks by knows who you are and what you do. Your logo is part of your branding. That's great, but how good is your paperwork?

Recently I received some forms from an accounting firm that I had to complete and send back by courier. After I'd completed the forms I had to address the courier bag ... guess what? There wasn't an address to be seen anywhere.

I got into Google and entered a search term and within seconds details of the accounting firm appeared. (I love Google!). The problem was, there were three addresses for the same firm in the same city. Hmmm. "Do I just pick one and let the courier company work out if it's the right one", I thought. No. So I picked a telephone number from the two shown and a lovely lady answered. She'd taken over the number of the business some months ago, she said, but had no idea where the business was now located.

Next I tried the Internet URL shown in one of the adverts. No luck, I got a template page with no details entered. So, I tried another number and got the firm's receptionist. She told me the new address and I addressed my parcel.

What are my business efficiency tips for this post? You guessed it, there are three: (Did you really guess all three or am I just guessing that you guessed?)

Make sure that any documents used outside the business, especially those likely to be returned, include your postal and street address and other contact details (how hard can that be?)

If you have your contact details posted in different listings and change your address, change the details in the listings too

If your firm has a URL in the firm's name and you haven't yet set up your Internet site, at least put some contact details on the bloody home page

Being found is business. Business is money. How in God's name do people find you if they don't know where you are and what your contact details are?

Don't let your business down by not being found. Unless you are the only one of your kind in town, potential clients will just find someone else.

Robin

Robinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11768713486383482322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13720690.post-57448642742964926242008-10-15T13:32:00.002+09:302008-10-15T14:55:24.142+09:30The Key Joint Venture SecretHave you ever had anything to do with joint ventures? You're not really sure what a joint venture is? Perhaps you think it's only the big guys who get involved in JVs.

A JV is when two or more people or companies join together to pursue common interests. For example, the Red Arrows (Royal Air Force aerobatic team pictured at left) has seven or eight pilots whose JV is to provide visually appealing and safe flying.

JVs often create synergy ie, a combined result, the sum of which is greater than the individual efforts of all the people involved.

(You may have to read that a couple of times if you aren't familiar with the word)

So, now that we know what JVs are, you'll want to know what the Key Secret is. Here it is. The key secret is (drum roll) that, JVs can be very, very inexpensive. Which in turn means that they are an excellent way to earn income, promote your business etc without huge costs.

Let me give you an example:

I have a hairdressing shop and you have a shoe shop. I offer your clients a
5% discount on any hairdressing at my shop and you offer a 5% discount
on shoes to my clients. In either case a client just has to produce a sales
voucher to take up the offer. When someone gets a haircut I stamp their sales
voucher with the offer and tell them about it ... and vice-versa. We
both get more customers.

Would you like to give it a try?

I'm looking for a JV partner who sends out large numbers of monthly statements or products who can include an advertising flier in their product or envelopes. Each partner will have a unique partner identification number and get at least a 50% commission on every item sold.

If you are interested in a joint venture with Desert Wave Enterprises, please let me know and we'll explore what might work for both of us.

Robin

PS: Remember the dictum, "Nothing ventured, nothing gained"

Robinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11768713486383482322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13720690.post-88059440501063486062008-09-20T14:28:00.002+09:302008-09-20T14:53:11.256+09:30Our New Capability Statement

Our new Capability Statement was released today. Many smaller companies outsource some of their non-core activities.

The most common activity outsourced seems to be payroll. Instead of having a team of accountants, expensive software and having to struggle with taxation compliance issues and more, many firms outsource their payroll activities and find it very cost effective.

This type of outsourcing is long term. You pay someone with expertise and access to reliable software and support to take over the whole payroll process permanently.

Other forms of outsourcing are short term. This can involve hiring someone to produce a report, take notes at job or other interviews, type documents, manage large-scale printing activities and more.

Outsourcing allows businesses to access expertise they do not have in-house and don't need permanently. It's a just-in-time activity. This is the sort of outsourcing in which Desert Wave Enterprises is involved.

Businesses save the oncosts of permanent staff; costs to recruit, workers' compensation premiums, superannuation levy, office space and furniture, leave loadings, orientation and other training costs, and much more.

If you currently outsource, or are wondering how you can offload some of the tasks for which your staff doesn't have expertise, or which you find burdensome, think about Desert Wave Enterprises as your outsourcing partner.

See http://www.dwave.com.au/consulting.html for further information or give Robin a call on +61 8 89520786.

Robin

Robinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11768713486383482322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13720690.post-89814702065661407142008-09-02T10:44:00.001+09:302008-09-02T11:00:04.295+09:30Organising for Efficiency

Whatever you do, wherever you work, it's essential to be organised if you are to work efficiently.

Some people are natural organisers (my wife is one). They are able to organise without a lot of effort. Others are not as readily organised and therefore need to make a conscious effort.

One of my key attributes is that I'm organised. I doubt whether it has come as a gift from the gods like it has with others, but I began getting organised when I was studying Introduction to Management more than 30 years ago.

One of the first rules I learnt from the course was that good managers, "plan and organise to avoid crises". That made sense to me and I've followed that dictum ever since.

Today I use four things to keep organised:

A computer-based calendar that pops-up messages to tell me when things are due eg, bills

A Gantt chart (created using MS Excel) that shows me the hours of the day for every day of the week and what I should be focusing on during different times

Task Planner which is a piece of paper on which I jot down my priorities for the day

A filing system that is easy to use

Other people use such things as the online GDAgenda software. See http://www.gtdagenda.com/ for further details.

It doesn't matter what you use or how you use it, provided it works for you. However, the first step to success is to be organised.

Robin

Robinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11768713486383482322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13720690.post-53241435719160198202008-08-22T07:56:00.000+09:302008-08-22T08:06:30.730+09:30BCC Question Most CommonIt's been a while, but now that I'm back in Australia, I intend to upgrade this each Friday.

What do you know about BCC? Is it something to do with the Christian era and the birth of Christ? No. It's short for Blind Carbon Copy.

Don't be disheartened if you didn't get it right. Pay Per Page is Being BornAre you an astute Internet marketer who has been laboriously adding AdSense ads to all of your site pages, hoping that a small percentage of your site visitors will click and make you money? Perhaps you include a few affiliate banners and advertisements for your own products too ... like me.

AdSense and affiliate selling have been, and are still popular and many people claim to make excellent livelihoods from them. I've been selling other people's stuff online since 1998 and have generated thousands of dollars income. My AdSense account provides a regular income, but nothing to write here about.

For those who might not be familiar with AdSense, it's a Google program whereby you place Google advertisements aligned with your sites topic on your pages and, when people click on them, you earn Pay Per Click income.

Unfortunately, we Internet marketers cannot set up an income stream and sit back and just wait for it to continue earning income day after day. If for no other reason, the economic law of diminishing returns suggests that eventually we'll reach an income peak and then our income will begin to drop off. When there are millions of html pages in cyberspace with AdSense adverts, the number of total clicks is distributed among a greater number of AdSense clients and therefore, many people get a little bit of income rather than a few people getting a huge income. (There are of course exceptions)

So, what's the solution?

The solution is to diversify and be an early adopter of new technology and methods. By diversifying we can have some small assurance that while some income generating activities are running poorly, others will keep us going. By adopting new technology, we get in early on the first wave of interest from consumers.

In some cases, where a multi-level marketing approach is used (unlike with AdSense), it's possible to set up a comfortable residual income that continues flowing in well after the trend has become obsolete or less popular.

The newly emerging marketing technique called Pay Per Page (PPP) is tomorrow's trend and an interesting change from Pay Per Click that requires a conscious action on behalf of a site visitor.

With PPP people only have to visit a page for five seconds for site owners to earn money.
How does this work? Simple, website owners place a piece of Javascript on their pages and when someone visits a five second audio advertisement occurs.

The audio is only heard once by a visitor. Unlike PPC, PPP does not require a visitor to do anything. A commission is paid for every visitor. Can you see how superior this method is to PPC where only a small percentage of people who visit click on an advertisement?

Another distinct benefit for early adopters is that this program, commencing soon, has a multi-tier payment structure whereby adopters can also receive a part commission based on what their sign-ups earn. Like all multi-level-marketing programs, if you get in on the ground floor, work hard to sign-up a few hundred people, you can generate some healthy income. There are literally thousands of exemplars pointing at the success of this type business model.

Needless to say, this evolving model will eventually succumb to the laws of diminishing returns too, but those of us who are early adopters will have a nice period of high earnings until the next whizz-bang marketing method arrives.

To learn more about PPP, click here or on the link above.

To your success.

Robin Henry

http://www.dwave.com.au/
http://www.just-information.com/
http://www.employment-one.com/
http://www.selection-criteria.com/

Robinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11768713486383482322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13720690.post-51252716512983808182007-11-24T13:06:00.000+09:302007-12-14T02:54:44.789+09:30Turn Your Computer into a Virtual ATM Learn how to turn your computer into a virtual ATM that spits money at you 24/7.

A revolutionary new technique that has taken the Internet marketing community by storm is now revealed in a free ebook that you can download here: http://fly2.ws/BPilCJZ

This is nothing like you have seen before and involves receiving an unbelievable 100% commission.

That's not a misprint and it's the absolute truth.

I'm not going to talk about this anymore here ... just go to the link and download the free ebook with over 20 pages of the best advice available on the web today ... don't leave before you visit: http://fly2.ws/BPilCJZ

You won't be disappointed.

To your success.

Robin Henry
Director
Desert Wave Enterprises

http://www.dwave.com.au/

PS: When you have read the ebook, come back here and enter a comment to tell us your thoughts

Robinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11768713486383482322noreply@blogger.com0
