All these enthusiastic and thoughtful decorations have stirred up excitement and inspiration for the children and the grown-up patrons to want to be creative, too. They have found out that the library has a treasure chest of art and craft books, and other subject matter that will continue to inspire an immense love of reading and the desire to be creative in the future.

Providence School students and their teacher, Deborah Harville, made unique eye catching stand-up creatures which are perched on the tall book shelves and made created thematic window decorations.

Meadowview Elementary 2nd Graders and their teacher, Dawn Fausto made "BEE CREATIVE" painted flower pots with crafted felt fuzzy bees and flowers made from 45 rpm records. Mrs. Booth's and Ms. Linda's Preschool Class made colorful "Spring into Reading with Dr. Seuss" as window decorations.

Patricia Camp's Art Students made the backdrop for the bulletin board and made drawings of their favorite book titles.

Bossier Central Library partnered with Meadowview Elementary for their summer reading enrichment program. The children read our 600 books during the course of this four week activity.

To coincide with the theme of our Summer Reading Program, the children in a most creative manner "let their bodies do the spelling" of our theme "Be Creative At Your Library."

Congratulations for a job well done.

SUMMER 2009

MECHANICS:
The Summer Reading Program is geared for children ages 6-12 years old. The Program usually consists of storytelling, crafts, contests, and special guests. It lasts approximately 45 minutes to an hour.

Each child will fill out a reading log with his/her name, age, and school. The child will take the reading log home and record the title of each library book read during the summer program. When a child reaches half of his/her goal, he/she will sign a super reader's poster and receive an award. A certificate and another award will be given when the goal is completed.

Books to be counted on the logs must be library books chosen on the child's reading level. Children who are unable to read may have a parent or sibling read to them.

The reading goal for the 6 - 8 year old children is to read eight (8) books during the program, and the goal for the 9 - 12 year old children is to read a total of six (6) books. Once the goal has been reached, The children are encouraged to continue to read and record books on the reading log. The children will qualify for a reading certificate if the goal has been reached. Certificates will be awarded at the last storyhour program at each branch library.

RULES:
The Library cannot be responsible for children once they leave the library. Parents should be sure the child has a responsible person at the library during and after the program.

Children do not have to attend the Summer Reading Program in order to participate in the program.

Children are reminded before each storyhour to please: use the restroom, be quiet in the library, always have shoes, shirts, etc, on while in the library, have no food or drink inside the library, and do not run while in the library.

We ask that parents browse for books or read a magazine while the storyhour is in session to assure plenty of room for the children and to allow the performer full command of their attention.

MOST IMPORTANT: You must have a Bossier Parish Library card in order to check out books.

In honor of Earth Day on April 22, 2009, Children Services at Bossier Central Library has placed on display books that are related to conservation, recycling, endangered species, wetlands, and Earth Day. To learn more about Earth Day, visit the local branch of the Bossier Parish Library.

In addition, the Children's department is sponsoring a special promotion entitled "Get Your Green on at Your Library". When children check out books related to Earth Day, his/her name will be placed in a drawing for a unique bookmark which is embedded with wildflower seeds. Plant the bookmark and watch it grow.

We will also be giving away an Explore Coastal Louisiana CD, fun word search, bookmarks, and educational materials.

10 Tips to Get Your Green On

(1) Turn off the lights or the TV when leaving the room.

(2) Turn off the tap when you are washing your hands or brushing your teeth.

(3) Remember to recycle your magazines, newspapers, soda cans, etc.

(4) Walk, bike or take the bus to school.

(5) Borrow books, CDs and movies from libraries or friends instead of buying them.

(6) Plant a shade tree on the sunny side of your house.

(7) Use washable plates, cups and silverware instead of plastic.

(8) Set the thermostat in your house two degrees cooler in the winter and two degress warmer in the summer.

(9) Use fluorescent light bulbs instead of incandescent.

(10) Take vacations close to home or take a train instead of a plane when going farther away.

Every community should have a public library. Libraries are good for the community. There are many reasons libraries are important.

Libraries provide free books. Free books are important for people who can't afford to own many books. Many books help educate and grow both children and adults. Non-fiction books give information about various subjects. Fiction books help grow imaginations. Libraries provide programs and services to help communities. Some programs grow a love reading in children. Some services librarians provide are transferring books from one library to another and helping find books and information.

Every community should have a public library. Libraries are good for the community in many ways, including providing free books, education, programs and services.

AWE's Early Literacy Station

AWE’S EARLY LITERACY PROGRAM
Bossier Central Library Children Services has one of the most beneficial computerized
educational tools available. It is called AWE’s Early Literacy Station, and it is designed for
toddlers through second graders. The large flat screen monitor, color coded key board and
child sized mouse makes it easy to use the programs which includes beginning Reading,
History, Math, typing and computer games.

The "American Girl" Series

The very popular children’s book series, “American Girl,” has for the first time been made into a movie. It created quite a stir among young readers. Bossier Parish Children’s Library jumped on the band wagon to promote the book series by sponsoring a drawing, in which eight children were to receive a poster featuring one of the “American Girl” characters. The drawing took place on July 23.

To share in the excitement of the new “American Girl” movie, Bossier Central Children’s Library sponsored a drawing for posters featuring one of the “American Girl” book characters. The response was overwhelming. On July 23, Children’s Librarian Lucille Marabella drew the names of the winning contestants. Winners received their posters and other prizes on Monday, July 28 in the Children’s Library.

"Be A Star, READ!" - 2008 Summer Reading Program

This year’s 2008 Summer Reading Program entitled, “Be A Star, Read!” came to a close ending July 18. Once again Bossier Parish Library Children’s Services department head Lucille Marabella, along with her tireless helpers, as well as all of the dedicated branch managers and their helpers put together a great program.

To celebrate the end of the Summer Reading Program, each of the Bossier Parish Library’s branches went all out putting on a “Star Gala Event” complete with a red carpet for the children to walk down to receive their reading certificates. Each child could choose to dress as their favorite book character, rock star, space star, sports star, or reading star. After receiving their certificates, everyone was treated to a pizza party. Congratulations to all of the “Reading Stars” that participated in the 2008 Summer Reading Program!

Mark David Crosby Remembered

Mark David Crosby was one of Ms. Lucille’s Summer Reading Program children while he was in Elementary School. Mark David was killed on Sunday, December 5, 1999 in a car accident on his way home from Band Camp during his senior year at Benton High School. Rita Crosby, Mark David’s mother, has loaned to the Children’s Library a beautiful memorial plaque in honor of Mark David. He was an avid reader and enjoyed the Summer Reading Program very much. Ms. Lucille is proud to have it on display along with other “Star” readers.

"Back to School" & "Don't Be A Bully"

Going to school for the first time is very scary for little ones. The Children’s Library has many books geared to children about school and what to expect. Parents can alleviate those fears and help their children make the transition from home to school by spending time reading to them about the new experiences that await them.

Another scary thing about going back to school for some children, is the fear of being the target of a bully. This is especially true if they were bullied the previous year. The Children’s Library has a display of books on the subject along with a handout about bullies. Parents can help their children early on if they know what signs to look for.
