Of course, it looks like Congress will repeal part of the ban on federally funded stem cell research.Cicerohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09021600563994065236noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13470103.post-1121874564402385252005-07-20T11:49:00.000-04:002005-07-20T11:49:00.000-04:00It _could_ also be a step towards banning a partic...It _could_ also be a step towards banning a particular line of research outright.

Seriously...which do you see a GOP-led government getting behind: banning all stem cell research, or disbanding the NIH?Brianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06799024060528185282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13470103.post-1121855588158206312005-07-20T06:33:00.000-04:002005-07-20T06:33:00.000-04:00But it still _could_ be a step in the right direct...But it still _could_ be a step in the right direction. If researchers can re-learn the fact that "research" is not synonymous with "federal funding for research", we could be well on our way to a less state-centered science climate.Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12883160314283610943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13470103.post-1121826615786906932005-07-19T22:30:00.000-04:002005-07-19T22:30:00.000-04:00What they don’t have a right to do is take money f...What they don’t have a right to do is take money from the many Americans who (rightly or wrongly) find stem cell research repulsive and/or immoral and use it for such research.

While I agree with that in principle, the fact remains that this adminsitration (and every other one that has gone before it) only has regard for the moral objections of some taxpayers to certain federal endevours when it suits them to do so. There's no shortage of taxpayers that had moral objections to the war in Iraq, for one example. Or the war on drugs, for another.

Don't kid yourself...this is hardly based on some libertarian notion of "not forcing personal choices on others".Brianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06799024060528185282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13470103.post-1121822339456380902005-07-19T21:18:00.000-04:002005-07-19T21:18:00.000-04:00It doesn't matter, which is why the American Talib...It doesn't matter, which is why the American Taliban / Anti-Stem Cell research people are crazy.
