This year, the picnic is being held in the green area behind the Nixa Fire Department General HQ located at 301 S. Nicholas Rd in Nixa. This is the normal meeting place, of course, but this time we'll be "outside"

The club is providing the hamburger and hot dogs and will be grilling out behind the Fire Department. We ask that anyone that comes bring drinks, side dishes or deserts to the event.

The green area behind the fire department will provide us with plenty of space for the kids to play and have fun, or to set up a portable QRP station and operate some HF and show off your portable gear.

We'll also be able to go inside the EOC and operate the club's new HF station. Last weekend, Chris Cochran, KB0WZC, worked several stations on SSB in the Seattle area, and Al Gallo, W0ERE, gave the Begali Contour CW paddle a workout and made several CW contacts.

Jeff Kerr, KC0VGC, and Chris Cochran, KB0WZC, got the station PC set up and installed the SignalinkUSB so that we can work HF digital modes as well now! Thanks to Art Trampler, K0RO, we were able to get some really nice logging software donated to the club for the station.

Come out and enjoy the good food and give the club's HF station a nice workout, or get on 6-meters and work the magic band!

Nets on the Nixa ARC Repeaters

Recently, we've added several nets to the club's repeaters throughout the week.

On Mondays, we have two nets currently active. If you haven't checked in yet, make an effort to check into the "Monday Night Net" on the 53.270 repeater. The net is held weekly at 8:00 p.m. and is open to all topics related to 6-meters and below. This wonderful net has been in operation since November 19, 2007 and will soon celebrate it's second birthday! The net control operators are Jeff Kerr, KC0VGC, and James French, KC0TQD. The net is a round table style net that those familiar with HF nets will appreciate. The net lasts approximately an hour, and drop-by check ins are also welcome. Visit this net's website, www.6meter.net, for more information

The newest net is the "Missouri VoIP" net. This net is held on Monday nights at 8:00 p.m. The inaugural net was on Monday, September 14, 2009. Currently there are two net control operators, John McReynolds, KC0NRO, and Jeremy Geeo, KD0EAV. The net is conducted over EchoLink via the new **Missouri** conference server. The inagural net lasted about 1-1/2 hours. Local check-ins are encouraged to participate in the net. The net is intended to test and utilize all the EchoLink VoIP links and repeaters in the state. You can visit this net's website, www.mo-voip.net, for more information.

On Tuesday's, you are cordially invited to check into the "Bible Belt Christian Fellowship Net" on the 145.270 repeater at 8:00 p.m. This is an open, non-denominational net and everyone is invited to participate. J.R. Duncan, N0RLP, is the net control for this net. The net is meant for fellowship and Bible scripture readings and also takes prayer requests and praise reports. J.R. does a great job on this net, which first hit the airwaves on August 1, 1995, and continues to be a popular net. You can also check into this net via EchoLink by connecting to "KC0LUN-R", or node # 113667. For more information, visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BibleBeltChristianFellowship/.

On Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., you can tune into the first net started by the Nixa Amateur Radio Club, called the "NARC Net". The primary frequency for the net is the 145.270 repeater, but you can also check in via the 53.270 and 442.275 repeaters and EchoLink via node #113667. Once all the repeater links are back up and operational, you will also be able to check in via the 224.280 and 927.5375 repeaters along with IRLP via reflector #9229. This net rotates net control operators. In 2009, our net control operators are Chris Cochran, KB0WZC; Lance Riffle, KQ0Q; Randy Jordan, KC0UKB; and Kent & Richard Doucey, N0IRN & KD0HGY. The purpose of the net is to pass along local information about local amateur radio related activities and club related events and for everyone checking in to be able to check their equipment on all the VHF / UHF bands in which they have equipment. Visit www.nixahams.net for more information.

Lastly, everyone is invited to check into the Friday night "Technology Net" held on the 145.270 repeater. The net is held every Friday night at 8:00 p.m. The net is hosted by the Raytown Amateur Radio Club and has been very popular. The net is brought to us via the 145.270 repeater's EchoLink node. Watch for e-mails on Friday on the NixaHams Yahoo! group advising of the topic for the week and the "expert" guest speaker. Past net topics have been D-Star, EchoLink, IRLP, How to Work Amateur Satellites with Your HT, and Remote Control Aircraft and Amateur Radio. Visit http://www.k0gq.com/technet.htm for information on future and past nets. Recordings of the most recent nets are placed on the website for you to listen to if you missed the live net.

During Hurricane season, you will also hear the Hurricane Traffic Net being re-broadcast on the 442.275 repeater. This net is "receive only" so local traffic does not get passed onto the net. This net is piped into the Nixa ARC repeater system via IRLP.

Keep an ear to the airwaves and take some time to check into these nets this fall and winter and become a "regular check-in." We'd love to hear from you on a net soon!

Tour de Bass Bike Ride coming up!

We're looking for 30 volunteers to help us provide communications for the 2009 Tour de Bass bike races to be held on October 24, 2009.

The event starts at the fabulous Bass Pro Shop in Springfield, where net control will be set up. This station is in close proximity to the Nixa High School and several of the elementary schools so we hope it will serve as the club station for Nixa students. The youth involved in the program will be instilled with responsibility and leadership skills through their handling of emergency and routine radio traffic into and out of the Nixa area during emergency communications drills as well as in real-life events.

Second, it is to be utilized for communication training. This function is directly linked to the first point, but would include any persons interested in proper amateur radio and emergency communications techniques.

Third, it is our plan that the local Emergency Management offices, such as Greene and Christian Counties, and the National Weather Service be able to control this station locally or remotely. The station was set up and operational by 9:30 a.m. and was shut down at 6:00 p.m. Throughout the day, we took 38 check in's on the 53.270, 145.270 and 442.275 repeaters. We also had check in's on 50.125 USB, EchoLink and IRLP. We utilized the club's new Comet GP-15 for 2m / 6m and UHF operations, and also tried out the new SQ-50 Squalo for 6-meter SSB. These antennas will be installed at the Fire Department after field day for use with the club's new HF Station. We used a Yaesu FT-920 for 6m FM and SSB, and used the Yaesu FT-8900 for 6m, 2m and UHF FM.

Though the morning was wet, windy and cold, the weather cleared up and we had a great time! We'd also like to thank James French, KC0TQD, for the bottled water!

We were surprised at the number of amateur operators that had recently moved into the Springfield / Nixa / Ozark area that stopped by wanting to know more about the club and our activities. We also had several kids that were interested that pulled their parents over to the table and wanted to know about amateur radio. It's amazing how interested the kids are when they hear the radio traffic and see the radios.

If you couldn't make it out this year, plan to come out next year. The event was great fun and a huge success!

April 2009 Nixa ARC Meeting Minutes

The meeting was brought to order by Vice-President James Adkins, KB0NHX, acting in the place of President Chris Cochran, KB0WZC, at 6:07 p.m.

The following were in attendance at the meeting (22 people in attendance): James Adkins, KB0NHX; Jim Adkins, KC0IYI; Kim Adkins, KC0GKP; Ralph Baldi, KF6AHT; Shawn Baker, KA0RZE; Pat Barber, KB0UTY; Gary Bell, (expired KA1OMA); John Copelin, KC0QNM; Kent Doucey, N0IRM; Richard Doucey, KD0HGY; J.R. Duncan, N0RLP; James French, KC0TQD; Dean Gaines, KC0SQD; Kevin Hawkins, KD0CIU; Johnnie Hubert, KD0GGJ; Jerry Johnson, KE0KI; Randy Jordan, KC0UKB; Chris Raymond, KC0TLE; Fred Smith, N0AZZ; C.W. Stiver, KC0VNT; Brian Umbenhower, K0OLD; and Jim Young, WA6NFY.

We had 5 people join or renew their memberships with the club after the meeting.

James Adkins, KB0NHX, acting treasurer for Jeff Morrissey, KB0WVT, donned the poker hat and read the treasurer's report. The full report will be published in the next club newsletter.

James then gave an update of the club HF station. At the meeting, all current equipment, less the Comet GP-9, that the club has obtained through donations and purchased through the Nixa Community Foundation grant was displayed.

The Iota DLS-55 power supply, Tigertronics SignalinkUSB, two coaxial Polyphasers, KU4UB SQ-50 Squalos for 6m SSB, 250' of Belden RG-213, and Andrew FSJ4-50B 1/2" superflex cable. Also on display were the Penninger masts and mounting equipment, which everyone was very impressed with. Also advised that Chris Cochran, KB0WZC, is currently looking at several Bencher and Vibroplex keys for the club HF station. The only CW operator in attendance was Jerry Johnson, KE0KI, and he would like to see the Vibroplex equipment for the station and mentioned the dual paddle / straight key they produce.

We announced the club has a grant pending with the ARRL foundation for the purchase of the Yaesu FT-450, Yaesu FT-950, and Yaesu FT-8900 radios for the station. We also announced we have a pending grant request with Best Buy for two computers to be used for logging and remote control of the station. Chris Cochran, KB0WZC, has purchased the Alpha Delta DX-LB+ HF dipole for the station, it should arrive by Wednesday. The question was posed as to when to expect an install, and James advised we are planning for just after Field Day 2009 in early July.

James then updated everyone on projects that have been completed and that are currently in progress.

James has completed the LDG RVS-8 voter for the 53.270 repeater. He has also purchased the crystals for the backup 145.270 repeater, which is a Motorola MSR-2000 donated by Bob Du Brul, WB0RJR. Jeff Kerr, KC0VGC, is working on a DekTOP micro-minature PC to be installed at the Cox South site. This PC runs on 12 vdc and will be used to remotely control / program the Arcom RC-210 controller and monitor the wireless Internet connection at the site. Jeremy Tannehill, KC0UJZ, made a trip to the top of Cox and adjusted the wireless Internet yagi. We now have good line of site (LoS) and the connection is now very stable and reliable. James and Jeremy also adjusted all audio on the 224.280, 442.275 and 927.5375 repeaters. Jumper settings were changed and audio adjusted. It now sounds normal, like the 53.270 and 145.270 repeaters. We are still having intermittent problems with the RC-210 controller at Cox Hospital, and plan to hook it up to the site's battery backup system to provide continuous, true 12 vdc.

Jeff Kerr, KC0VGC, asked for and obtained permission for us to utilize IRLP reflector channel 9229 on a permanent basis. IRLP normally only allows a 1 to 1 connection, and using a reflector allows numerous stations to connect simultaneously. This is will help us in the future when multiple connections are needed, such as for W0S Titanic Special Event station.

Jeff Morrissey, KB0WVT, and Jim Sellars, N0UAM, were tasked with assisting KSPR33 reporter Kevin Lighty with a special report on severe weather storm spotters. It is posted on the club website and on You Tube.

James and Thad Huff, KC0AQG, are working on a single tube high-power repeater amplifier for the 53.270. Goal is to have 1200 to 1500-watts output from a single phase 220 vac supply. Shawn Baker, KA0RZE, is also assisting in the location of parts for the project, and will undoubtedly help with design along the way.

For Sucker Days, we now have 8 people signed up for Sucker Days. Looking for people to help early in the morning with setup at this time, afternoon and evening has good coverage. This event is coming up May 16th and runs from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. We will have a 6m station, and VHF/UHF operations and maybe HF. Basically, we'll be meeting the public and talking on the radio and being in a positive light to the public.

The Nixa Bike Ride is May 30, 2009. We had 3 more people sign up for it at the meeting, and have 15 people lined up now. Still looking for about 5 to 6 more to help out. Thanks to all that are participating. We still need 2 people with mobiles and mag mount antennas to act as SAG vehicle riders to follow up the race and 4 more people for rest stops. James French, KC0TQD, advised he has a couple of J-Poles that could be used for portable operations if someone has a radio and needs a portable station antenna.

We also talked about Field Day. We will be getting the newly re-vamped Missouri Highway Patrol mobile command center. We have three people that are available to drive it. Kent Doucey, N0IRM, is going to check about a fuel donation for the bus.
Plan to have 1 CW station and 2 SSB station. Jerry Johnson, KE0KI, announced that he is going to try to operate CW at field day this year! Can't wait to see him in action!!

Lastly, Jerry Johnson, KE0KI, announced at the meeting that April 26, 2009, is his 63rd anniversary in ham radio. He received his original license on April 26, 1946, and has been licensed for 63 consecutive years. Congratulations to Jerry!

Floor was opened for questions. Since there were none, the meeting adjourned at 7:10p.m.

Memphis FreeFest, Bartlett TN - Saturday April, 18th

Follow this link for more details.

FreeFest Flyer

ARRL 2009 Arkansas State Convention - Saturday, April 25, 2009

ARRL

2009 Arkansas State Convention

Sponsored by

Benton County Radio Operators

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

8:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Location:

Rogers First Church of the Nazarene

4911 W. Thanks to the hard work of Jeff, we were able to obtain Internet service at the Cox Hospital repeater site, which is the home for the 224.280 and 442.275 repeaters.

With the move, we gain a more robust node. The Hospital provides us with generator power for the site during power outages, so moving the equipment will ensure that the IRLP node remains active during severe weather and power outages due to ice storms, etc. An APC Back-UPS Pro 1000 was installed at the site to bridge the gap from the time we lose power to the time the generator kicks on.

The IRLP node, #3995, is permanently connected to the 224.280 repeater. If you have not yet gotten onto 220 MHz, this is a good reason to try it! The IRLP node is an open node, and anyone is allowed to make a connection to other nodes.

We'd like to thank club member Randy Jordan, KC0UKB, for donating the Dell desktop PC for the IRLP computer and for also donating the APC Back-UPS Pro 1000 UPS to help keep the computer and related equipment stable. We'd also like to thank club member Jeff Kerr, KC0VGC, for installing the Linux system and doing the work to get the IRLP card installed in the computer and for registering the IRLP node with the network. Jeff was also instrumental in getting Internet at the repeater site to make this move possible. Lastly, we'd like to thank the Nixa ARC Technical Committee, which consists of John Copelin, KC0QNM, Jeremy Tannehill, KC0UJZ, and James Adkins, KB0NHX, for their work at the repeater site installing the Motorola Canopy wireless Internet radio, the required router, computer and UPS. It was a team effort to get all the equipment installed and the audio levels adjusted properly.

For more information on how the IRLP node operates, and other IRLP information, click on the IRLP link on this website's menu.

Nixa ARC 444.275 Repeater Changes Frequencies

This past week has seen a number of upgrades to the Nixa ARC UHF repeater. Since its installation, we have fought an interference source near our input frequency. Bandpass filters helped, but did not alleviate the problem.

This week, we changed the repeater to 442.275 MHz, with an input of 447.275 MHz. The PL of 162.2 Hz remains the same. During the process, we were forced to change hardware as well. The Motorola Radius R1225 repeater was changed out for two Motorola CDM radios, similar to the radios used on the 53.270 and 224.280 repeaters because the GR1225 is not made to operate below 444.000 MHz. These radios have a much better front end than the Radius line of radios which should also help the repeater hear better. Programming on the Arcom controller was updated as well and the newly acquired TX RX duplexers were installed. These duplexers offer much greater isolation between the TX and RX frequencies and will allow us to add an external amplifier in the future

Initial testing has shown a drastic improvement in repeater sensitivity. It is a much more HT friendly machine than it was before.

Please spread the word to all your friends about the frequency change and we look forward to hearing you on the air!

2009 Club Roster

KBØNHX Chris, KBØWZC commented that he felt it was a very good and well attended event.

Technical Committee update was presented by James Adkins, KBØNHX

The 220 Motorola Micor and the 440 Motorola repeater have both been replaced with much improved Motorola CDM radios. This has greatly increased the receive sensitivity on the 220 repeater and 440 repeater. It has also greatly decreased the amount of nearby pager interferance on the 440 repeater.

The new radios greatly improved the audio quality on the 220 and 440 repeaters. It was noted that further adjustments need to be made to lower the level of the ID and beacons. Since the 440 is the center of the repeater linking system, it has improved the link audio on all the connected repeaters.

New duplexers for the 440 repeater have been donated by TX/RX. The new duplexers have not yet been received but are expected in the next month or so. The new duplexers will allow an amplifier to be added to the repeater at a future time.

Amplifers for the 220 and 440 repeaters are planned to be purchased from TE Systems at a future time. Money for this project will be gained from the sale of the old 220 and 440 repeaters.

Randy Jordan, KCØUKB donated a Dell comptuer that is being used for the IRLP node located at the home of Jeff Kerr, KCØVGC. The computer is working flawlessly and the audio reports are better than expected.

Remote receivers for the six meter repeater are planned. Nearly 100% of the items needed for the installation of this project are on-hand and awating approval from various agencies for permission to use tower space.

December Meeting

This year's December meeting will be held at the residence of David Beckler, NØSAP.
