I don't think it's really a special power, just a feeling I get. Does anybody else ever get that feeling? You know, when you start work for the day/night and you think to yourself, "I should have called in sick today!" You can handle these kind of days in a few different ways. You can either get mad at things or you can take things in stride and not let them get to you. I opt for taking things in stride whenever possible. I usually try to make jokes to ease situations, but sometimes I realize that maybe it's just easier to let other people blow off steam. I learned a lesson about that many years ago at work. Someone was having a bad night, dealing a lot of quality issues concerning the parts they supplied to the line I was on. These parts were door panels and they came with a hole in them for the manual window crank. When this person asked if the parts were okay for us to use I said, "We can't use these parts....they have a hole in them!" The look she gave me was priceless. She wasn't in the mood for jokes. Anyway, all I could really think of last night was "Gratitude Attitude". I don't think that will work for everyone.

Oscar Wilde quotes.

"All women become like their mothers. type='text'>Stories From Toronto.

The first story was my friend and I seeing Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander at Metro Airport in Detroit on Thursday. We checked into our hotel in Toronto at 1:00. We then quickly headed out to see downtown Toronto. We ended up at the Hockey Hall of Fame. We followed that up by grabbing a bite to eat at this restaurant called "Grace O'Malley's". It was 3:00 in the afternoon, so it wasn't very busy. I had something different for my dinner, I had chicken pot pie. After eating, we hit more shops, including the Eaton Centre. The Eaton Centre is a 4 story mall. Yeah, it's big! That was where Michael Buble was to sign autographs on Saturday afternoon. But, after reading all the rules regarding the Michael Buble appearance: Time limit...no guarantee of even getting an autograph...I decided to skip the event. We hit a couple more places and then we headed back to our hotel. The thing I noticed was that people in Toronto walk fast. They even walk when on escalators. So, I got into the habit of walking fast. Which caused me to get way ahead of my friend who was with me. So, I had to stop and wait a few times and slow down my walking pace. When we got back to the hotel, the jazz band was playing in the lounge. There were women headed to the lounge. They were wearing little black cocktail dresses. Looking very good, but it made my friend and I look very underdressed, so we just headed to our room. We fell asleep quite early.

When I woke up on Friday morning it was raining. It rained the entire day. We headed down to breakfast, which was a glorious buffet in our hotel. Best thing about our stay there! We walked around in the rain for a few hours and then had lunch at Lone Star Grill, which was directly across from our hotel. After lunch, we headed to the Steam Whistle Brewery. We got there shortly after 1:00 p.m. They offered us a free sample of their beer (a 10 oz glass, I believe). After we finished our beers, we signed up for a brewery tour. They said, "You also get a free sample of our beer." They poured each of us another beer. That was beer #2 for us. I didn't finish mine before our tour started, but my friend did. We weren't allowed to take beer along on our tour. After the 30 minute tour, we were given another free beer. That made 3 free beers each! Thank God I drank pop at lunch! We had 2 couples from Ireland and 1 woman from France on our brewery tour with us.

Our next stop was a tour of the Rogers Centre (where the Blue Jays play). It was your typical tour. The tour guide talked about the awesomeness of Rogers Centre. All I could think of was the scene in the Beavis and Butthead movie where they toured the Hoover Dam and constantly made remarks to the tour guide. Making his statements about the dam seem not very impressive. The tour lasted about an hour. I left my umbrella in one of seating areas and I had to force the tour guide to go fetch it for me. I felt bad about that because he constantly reminded us not to forget anything whenever we left to visit another part of the stadium. After the tour, we headed back to our hotel room to get ready for our big evening.

On Friday night, we had dinner at a restaurant called Baton Rouge. It was a nice place. I had a entree of grilled chicken and grilled shrimp. Very good, but too much food. We then headed to the Kylie concert at the Air Canada Centre. This was the most interesting part of the trip. We were seated in the 23rd row in the floor seating area. Most of the people seated near us were men....gay men. It seemed as if the entire gay male community of Toronto was at the concert. There seemed to be more men than women at this concert. We were fully immersed in the gay culture of Toronto. The whole thing was kinda funny. As for the show, it was great! Kylie does cater to her male and female audience. Several times, the male dancers jumped up and wrapped their legs around the waist of the other male dancers. This made the crowd happy. Kylie took a request for a song to be played during her encore. The crowd's request was "DISCO!" So, Kylie sang "Your Disco Needs You". From what I've heard that song is a big favorite in the clubs. The show lasted for 2 hours. Great show!

On Saturday morning we toured the CN Tower. The funny thing was that while in line for the tower tour we saw the same 2 Irish couples from the brewery tour on Friday. They said, "Doing all the tourist stuff, too?!" After the tour, we headed to Union Station to inquire about how to get to the Toronto Zoo. This involved taking the subway and then taking 2 buses. We encountered a young Asian man while on the subway. He had some mental troubles. He was making some incoherent noises, then shaking his head and laughing. He would then finish off by snapping his fingers. So, that got stuck in our heads. Especially the finger snapping part. It was something we did the rest of our trip. The zoo was nice. Very big. We did a lot of walking while there. We then went back to downtown.

We were eager to eat dinner at this place near our hotel called "Jack Astors". We saw the waitresses there on Thursday night. Attractive with short black skirts and cleavege-baring tops. So, we were pretty excited. We got seated and the next thing we heard was "Hi, I'm Andrew. I'll be your waiter tonight." Nooooooo! Talk about an evening of wasted potential! We ate dinner and then ended the night with a beer at the "Loose Moose" bar and grill that was next door to Jack Astors. We went back to the hotel and went to sleep early. We got up early and ate breakfast and finished packing and then headed to the airport. At the airport, my friend got randomly picked for a thorough search. He wan't too happy about that! He got a lot of special attention! LOL! The best thing about our trip home was the very cute flight attendant named Jodi who we had on our flight from Toronto to Detroit. She was cute and very nice. Too bad our flight was only 45 minutes long. Anyway, that's the long story of my trip!

"The Top 10 Things I Plan To Do While In Toronto"

#10. I've started and deleted about 3 or 4 posts since my last entry. My trip to Toronto is only a few days away now. I am so ready for it! I have a few ideas of places to go and things to do while my friend and I are there. I've kinda been planning things out. Also getting some advice from a few of my internet friends who live in Canada. Sadly, I'm not gonna take my cellphone along, so no Mobile Facebook updates from me. The cost of using my phone would have been too much. But, I suppose that's the whole point of a vacation. You know, go somewhere to get away from people and your everyday life at home?

Jamie Cullum's New Album Cover.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 314px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hrfHXPjzAVw/SpXSK21p46I/AAAAAAAACSM/Pdx1wSDKjvY/s320/packshot.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374432814297637794" />

De-Sensitized.

I had a little over a week off from work. I go back tonight. Most of my time off from work was spent right here in front of my computer. Sitting and thinking. You see, most of my time away from here isn't spent alone. It's spent with my Mom. Most everywhere I go and anything that I do, my Mom is with me. Pretty much every time I go out to eat somewhere my Mom is with me. When I go shopping, my Mom is with me. When I go out to the beach/lake, my Mom is with me. I don't feel that I can exclude my Mom from accompanying me when I go places. However, from to time, I just need to break free and go places by myself. It's not that I don't like my Mom or that we don't get along, I just need time alone. That is part of the reason I have scheduled my trip to Toronto with my best friend in October. It'll be the first time we've ever gone on vacation together. Kind of a "Guys Weekend" away. While I go out to dinner with my Mom a lot, I don't ever pick restaurants to eat dinner at that solely appeal to me. Can't very well say to Mom, "Why don't we go to Hooter's for dinner tonight?" So, after booking the trip to Toronto I set out to find various restaurants that would satisfy the requirements for a "Guys Weekend" away. In other words, restaurants that were nice, but not too fancy and places where the food on the menu sounded good and the atmosphere of the restaurant looked fun. Three places I bookmarked were "Grace O'Malleys", "Irish Embassy Pub-Grill" and "Baton Rouge Restaurant and Bar". These are 3 restaurants that I intend to have some form of lunch or dinner at while in Toronto. Am I looking more and more forward to getting away for these 4 days in October. In the meantime, I have bought tickets to next Saturday's Tigers game in Detroit against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Out of Lurk Mode.

A lot of times, I just lurk around places on the internet. The TV Land messageboard is a favorite place of mine to lurk. Mainly to read all the viewer complaints. The TV Land execs have often stated their key viewer demographic is from ages 40-54. I'm 39, so I don't quite fit into their key viewer age group. That means, my complaints would fall on deaf ears. Anyway, according to their research, viewers between the ages of 40-54 not only enjoy classic television, they also enjoy reality tv. Thus, TV Land is no longer just a place for watching classic tv programs, you can also watch reality tv shows there. Of course, people who grew up watching tv in the 1960's and 1970's will easily remember all the great reality tv shows that they had on tv back then. Go ahead, think of one. Candid Camera? Battle of the Network Stars? The Superstars? Here's my take on the TV Land programming. ESPN is a network for sports. Let's say that ESPN's key viewer demographic is baseball fans. So, they start airing re-runs of the tv show "Cheers" during primetime. You may think to yourself, "Cheers was a great show, but why the hell is ESPN showing re-runs of it in primetime?" And then I say to you, "Research has shown that a lot of baseball fans watch ESPN during primetime and many of those baseball fans are Red Sox fans. Sam Malone on Cheers was a former pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. So, people who like baseball will tune in to watch "Cheers" during primetime."
Several years ago, I started watching the channel VH1 Classic. It was a cable channel that broadcast classic music videos 24/7. Think of MTV in the early days. They even had VJs. However, some time ago, VH1 Classic scrapped it's original idea of programming. They canned most of all their VJs except for that guy named Eddie. They also greatly reduced the amount of time they played music videos. The videos pretty much stop airing at 4:00 p.m. every day. They start airing other music-related programming from 4:00 p.m. until resuming showing music videos sometime after midnight, I believe. A lot of the programming they show has been seen on the original VH1 channel. I lamented this change and I sent an e-mail to them to ask them why they ruined the channel. Never got a response. Viacom owns both VH1 Classic and TV Land. My beef with both of these channels is the reason why I liked them so much in the past was because they had a clear vision and niche. I could spurn network tv and watch TV Land and see programs like Mary Tyler Moore, Family Affair, Bob Newehart, Petticoat Junction etc... Now, they have shows like "The
Cougar", "How'd You Get So Rich?", "High School Reunion" and "She's Got The Look". I still watch TV Land and VH1 Classic, but I treat them like any other channel on tv. If they aren't showing anything I like, I watch a different channel. However, TV Land is almost to the point where the only show I watch on that network is "The Andy Griffith Show". Gone are the nights where I could watch TV Land all night long. As for VH1 Classic, there was only one thing good that came out of Michael Jackson's untimely death: All of the music video channels played music videos non-stop for about a week or so. It was refreshing to see music videos on tv again.

Coast Guard Festival 2009 Pics.

<img style="float:left; It's about the struggles of a single person trying to find that special someone. It's told from a hopeful perspective. The hope being that "something beautiful" will come your way. I've been on that quest for almost 40 years now. It seems to change for me on a weekly basis. There are times when people come along and make me realize why I never give up on the hope that "something beautiful" will come my way. The funny thing is that it usually comes along in a completely unexpected manner. I once told a friend that "I didn't miss what I don't have." I think the truth is, when I have a taste of "something beautiful", I wanna hold onto it for as long as possible. I'm realizing that I basically go through life having normal/average days, so when I have a great day, I want to hold onto those good feelings for as long as I can.

State of Shock.

It's been 2 days now since Michael Jackson passed away. I can't shake the funk I've been in since then. I've watched the marathons of his videos last night and today. Not too mention, playing his music on my computer and on my iPod in my car. I went to the mall today. The record store at the mall was playing Michael Jackson music today. "I Want You Back" started playing...I just couldn't take it and I walked out of the store. I guess I never knew how I would react to something like this. He wasn't the same person that he was to me 25 years ago, but I guess that doesn't really matter. Part of me would love to just go find a club that was playing his music right and dance the night away. I went to the beach tonight. It was too crowded for my tastes tonight. I would have really liked to spend some time there alone. Tonight wasn't the night for it. There has been a bright spot in the past 24 hours for me, so I have been thankful for that. More on that later.

Gone Too Soon.

Like a comet blazing 'cross the evening sky...gone too soon...Those were the opening words of the Michael Jackson song "Gone Too Soon" from his 1991 album "Dangerous". I am at a loss right now. Not sure what I am feeling right now. In early 1983, I remember listening to AM 800 CKLW which was out of Windsor/Detroit. I was almost always assured of hearing either "Beat It" or "Billie Jean" being played. At this time, a transistor radio was all I really had to listen to music. Although I may have inherited an old record player/stereo from my sister who was in college at the time. I eventually asked for a walkman cassette player. My Mom bought me one and the first cassette tape I asked for was Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album. I remember sitting at our kitchen table doing my homework and listening to the album on my walkman. It was always a little spooky for me hearing "Thriller" in my ears with my headphones. I then saw Michael perform on the tv special "Motown 25". He performed with his re-united brothers and then did a solo performance of "Billie Jean". It was a lip-synched performance, but it was his dancing that got everyone's attention. Michael unveiled his "Moonwalk" that night. It was that night that set his career on fire. Well, his adulthood career. People could not get enough of him. My best friend and I were 2 of those people. We would play the "Thriller" album at his house, either in his bedroom or his basement. We would play the entire album and either make up dance routines for each of the songs or attempt to mimic the dance routines from Michael's videos. We had both gotten very good at doing that, although no one ever knew that. At least, not until a short time later.
Fast forward to the Spring of 1984. My Mom and sister were invited to go to the local dance bar, "The Brewery" on a Friday night. Those of you familiar with Adrian, MI. now know it as the "L.A. Cafe". My Mom was allowed to bring me along with them, providing that I left the bar at 9:00 because it was 21 and over after 9:00. I had never been to a bar, which is no shock, since I was only 14 at the time. That night, I had dinner at The Brewery with my Mom and sister and some of their co-workers. At 6:30 or so, the DJ started playing music. My sister and her friends went out to the dance floor, while I sat there watching from our floor-side table. My sister then said, "You can come dance with us if you want to." I proceeded to dance with my sister and her friends. The first song I remember dancing to was "Let's Hear It For The Boy". When the song finished, the DJ said "Let's hear it for THAT boy!" and he pointed to me. Everybody went crazy. I was a little surprised. The next song he played was Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'." I started dancing, doing all my best Michael Jackson moves that I had been secretly doing at my friend's house. My sister was shocked. That night was the beginning of my 15 minutes of fame, which lasted for about one year. After sweet-talking the owner of "The Brewery" during one of my nights there, I was allowed to stay at the bar past 9:00. I was always with my family when I went. I spent much of that year going to The Brewery on Friday and Saturday nights. I was known as the little kid who could dance like Michael Jackson. I would walk in the bar and people would say "There's that kid that dances like Michael Jackson." I know this sounds hard to believe, but it's true.
Billie Jean was always my favorite Michael Jackson song to dance to. I had 2 Michael Jackson posters on my bedroom wall. One of them from the "Billie Jean" video. Kinda like the one Theo Huxtable had on his bedroom wall. In August of 1984, I went to my first concert. It was the Jackson's "Victory Tour" at the Pontiac Silverdome. That was the one and only time I ever saw Michael Jackson in concert. It was cool to be a Michael Jackson fan back then. I know that his popularity faded over the last 25 years. Scandals and money problems plagued him. But, the music he made will live on. It's kinda hard to believe that he is gone at the age of 50. But, in a way, I sometimes found it hard to imagine seeing him as an older man. I just hope that everyone will put all the negative behind and remember the greatness he blessed tht world with for much of his life. R.I.P. Michael.

The End of the Innocence.

I went to a "Let's Celebrate Life..." party for a cousin of mine this past weekend. My cousin has been battling ovarian cancer for awhile now. The party was in part to celebrate her life as well as a belated birthday party for her. Cancer is so very difficult to understand , unless you are very close to someone who has battled it, or unless you've battled it yourself. What I mean, is when you are distanced from it, you don't realize what people go through when fighting cancer. My cousin has had 4 rounds of chemo and none have had any effect on her cancer. She has recently started a new drug. Right now, she is hoping for a miracle. She said she has good weeks and bad weeks....good days and bad days...good 1/2 days and bad 1/2 days. She just turned 54 earlier this month. It's a really sobering thought when you realize that someone you know is fighting the battle of their life. I made it through Father's Day, although I must say that I am glad that it is over. I did visit the cemetary where my Dad is buried on Saturday. I didn't want to do anything for Father's Day, but I went to my sister's house for a cookout. I guess I'm just glad I didn't go to any public restaurants yesterday. I also learned yesterday that the Mother of a friend of mine from high school died from cancer. I was very sorry to hear that. Well, that's all for now.

Good Stuff!

Be A Good A Sport!

There was much made of LeBron James recent show of unsportsmanlike conduct. If you were living in cave recently, LeBron's team lost to Orlando on Saturday night and they were knocked out of the playoffs. LeBron made a quick exit off the court after the game. Leaving without congratulating the Magic on their series victory. LeBron also left the Cleveland lockerroom and boarded the team bus without speaking to any reporters. This left his team to answer all the questions for him. A day or so later, LeBron explained his actions. He said that he was "a winner". He wasn't about to congratulate a team that just beat him. Whaaaaa????? There are a few memorable images/moments that I will always remember from the conclusions of some playoff series in the past. In 1988, the Detroit Pistons finally defeated the Boston Celtics in a hard fought 6 game series to advance to the NBA Finals. At the series end, Kevin McHale of the Celtics met Isiah Thomas at mid-court and shook hands with him. He encouraged Isiah to "take care of business" against the Lakers. For as much as the Celtics and Pistons didn't like each other, it was a classy move by McHale. In 1991, the Chicago Bulls swept the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference finals. The Pistons did not handle the defeat well. Isiah Thomas and Bill Laimbeer led several Pistons in walking off the court without shaking the hands of the Chicago Bulls. But, Joe Dumars of the Pistons stayed behind to shake hands with Michael Jordan and the other Bulls. As he put it, "Jordan had shook hands with him 3 years in a row and there was no way he was gonna leave without shaking Jordan's hand." People are comparing LeBron's actions to those of the Pistons. When I was in high school, I played a set of tennis against a friend of mine during tennis practice. My friend was a very competitive person. I won the set 6-4 and at the end of the match my friend simply walked away without shaking my hand. Not very sportsmanlike, but I knew how my friend was. We had a 5 minute team meeting with our coach after the set we played. After the meeting, my friend said to me, "Nice match." I said, "Thanks." Nothing more was said. My friend just needed some time to calm down after our set. I realized that. We moved on. But, as a professional athelete, LeBron needs to realize that there are many people (kids especially) who watch everything he does. A few minutes of congratulating the Magic and answering reporters questions would have said volumes about his character.

For The Sake Of Arguments.

I've been taking a break from politics. Eventhough there has been big news lately. The California Supreme Court upholding the ban on gay marriage....Obama nominating a latin female to the Supreme Court and even here in Michigan with the state house passing a ban on smoking in restaurants and bars, but not Indian-run casinos. The state Republicans support a complete ban, but the Democrats want to still allow smoking in these casinos. The news story on this in the Detroit Free Press has elicited many comments. Some political issues can touch off firestorms on both sides of the issues. Sports is much the same these days. I saw Jiri Hudler of the Wings get laid out by a hit a few weeks ago. Anahiem players and coaches simply said, "Hudler was admiring his pass." That's why Hudler got drilled by a nasty open ice hit. It was a clean hit. The ensuing penalty that the Ducks player received was excessive and not warranted. Against Chicago, Niklas Kronwall of Detroit knocked out Martin Havlat of the Blackhawks. He was kicked out of the game, just as the Anaheim player was when Hudler was clobbered. Chicago fans screamed bllod murder and they wanted Kronwall suspended. As did many other hockey fans who hate the Red Wings. If you wanna look at things in a common sense manner, there are many times in hockey when one player hits another and that player gets hurt. Nobody ever says, "You know that guy could have decided not to hit that player and just skated by him." Chicago's coach went nuts after he found out that a player on his team had been called for a 2 minute minor penalty after the 1st period in game 4. He said, "I think we just witnessed the worst call in the history of sports!" REALLY? I'm sure Joe went to all the major sports cities in America and asked dieshard sports fans what the worst call in the history of sports was, that minor penalty wouldn't even make the top 500,000.

You Make Me Want To...

Tonight, I went to see Luke Bryan in concert at a bar in Grand Rapids. Luke had two opening acts. "Small Town Sons" and "Dew South". Both bands had rocking shows. "STS" mixed some country music and rock music together during their 45 minute set. Including covers of "Folsum Prison Blues" , "You Shook Me All Night Long" and "Old Time Rock 'N' Roll". Dew South played a similar style set. Playing covers such as "Bitch", "Long Train Running" and "All Summer Long". Both opening bands kept the music umtempo and rocking. The crowd was pretty wild tonight. Ready to party. Luke Bryan played some of his hits including "Country Man", "Baby's On The Way", "Good Directions", "We Rode In Trucks" "You Make Me Want To" and "Do I". He threw in some country classics including "Mountain Music" and other country favorites. He closed the show with his hit song "All My Friends Say". The crowd screamed for more and he and his band came out for a 2 song encore. They began the encore with the Brooks & Dunn smash "Play Something Country" and they closed the night with Luke's party song "Take My Drunk Ass Home". It was a fun concert!

Tulip Time Pics.

<img style="float:left; The site where they have pictures and bios of all the current executives of TV Land. I realized that TV Land is owned by Viacom. I didn't realize the scope of Viacom's cable empire. Many of the current TV Land execs have quite the resumes. Many of these people were responsible for the quality programming on networks such as Spike TV, the WB network and NBC. If you dislike the new reality shows such as "High School Reunion" and "The Cougar", just realize that some of the people behind these shows were involved in reality shows that were shown on networks such as the WB network and Spike TV. So, if you are lamenting the current state of programming on TV Land like I am, just know where TV Land is getting their executives from. The thing is, when a network talks about the successful tv shows of the past that their current executives have been involved with and you remember the shows they mention as failures, you know what brilliant minds you are dealing with. Moving onto the subject of sports...The Detroit Pistons season was a disappointment that began with the trading of Chauncey Billups and ended with a sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers. They were a hard team to watch this season. Many discussions are taking place right now as to who will be back with Detroit next season and who will be gone. Don't be surprised if Tayshaun Prince is traded. He seems to have hit a wall. The Pistons hoped that he would be an offensive threat this year. For half a season, he delivered. However, he then became very inconsistent. His offense was non-existent versus Cleveland, not to mention how Lebron James destroyed the Pistons. I believe Tayshaun was defending Lebron during the series. While I like Tayshaun, it's not gonna be a surprise to me if he gets traded. He might still have some trade value left in him.
