Well, I'm new to the group as well, though I've been around The Lion's Call for some time now. I'm Petraverd, TLC staffie and the Character Connections essayist. So thank you, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it! It's nice to know these articles are being read and enjoyed.

Anyway, I haven't read Eragon, so I'm afraid I don't have much to say on that subject...but I'll be around, so you'll probably see me throw my two cents in sooner or later on some subject. Until then!

The basic plotline is taken pretty much straight from Star Wars, but Eragon is set in a world with a very deep original culture, which really comes out in Eldest, especially how magic works.

You will find the atheistic part in there, just keep reading.

I would definitely not want a child to read Eldest, for the that reason.

One thing I did not like about Eragon (and more than one fantasy book) is that it copies Lord of the rings, Star Wars, and narnia. Many fantasy authors do this, building on the foundation laid by Lewis and Tolkien, keeping the same plotline and changing a name a little, adding different characters. This is what I've found. I started reading Eragon, but lost interest about halfway through...I should
finish it, I guess, but it seemed so similar to the plot of Star Wars that I
didn't see the point in reliving the story with dragons instead of
lightsabers. But that's just me.

Daniel, have you tried "Here There Be Dragons" by Owen? It's a fantasy
about the adventures of Lewis, Tolkien, and Charles Williams when they
become the caretakers of a map of imaginary lands. Some points are strange
and oddly paced, and I don't know quite where it's coming from spiritually,
but definately a lot of food for thought. We'll be having a reading group
on it at TheLionsCall.com after we finish Magician's Nephew (For anyone
interested, we have these in The Lion's Call chat room on Fridays at 5
Pacific. We're doing chapters 6 and 7 this week.).

Hi Narnia Fans!

I just entered the group yesterday. It’s awsome to be able to talk to fans of Narnia.

Have you seen the new Character connection on the Lion’s Cal? It’s the best one so far! The writer did an excellent job. I loved the message of salvation at the end. Kudos to Kristi Simmons.

By the way, I’ve just finished a great book called Eragon, by Christopher Paolini. It is a wonderfull book, almost as good as Narnia. If you love the Narnia series, you will probably like this book.

playing tag and running through the field near the house. Bradly and
I became really close over the years and I know right now how much he
must be hurting inside.

Then a few years ago my Grandma Fairbanks (Florence Marie Fairbanks)
Passed away from Cancer. I was devistated. but I had Norma right
there beside me to help me understand that it was grandma's time to
go. That God needed her for other things. a few years later her and
my Grandpa got married and I was over joyed that she was at last my
REAL grandmother. Because she was married to my grandpa.

I love Norma Jean Fairbanks to death, she has always been there for
me, always been able to help me when others could not and has always
loved me as one of her own grandchildren. For as much as she has done
for me I was never able to return the love and thanks that she gave
to me.

I'm not terribly new, I've just never posted. So...hello all! I do
love the Chronicles of Narnia, and most of C.S.Lewis' other works. :-)

But, I agree with this last post. Lewis didn't 'hate allegory'. To my
knowledge, he never said that. However, there is no allegory involved
in these stories. As Lewis wrote in a letter to a Mrs. Hook in
December of 1958:

"If Aslan represented the immaterial Deity in the same way in which
Giant Despair [a character in The Pilgrim's Progress] represents
despair, he would be an allegorical figure. In reality, however he is
an invention giving an imaginary answer to the question, 'What might
Christ become like, if there really were a world like Narnia and He
chose to be incarnate and die and rise again in that world as He
actually has done in ours?' This is not allegory at all.""

An allegory is defined as a story in which the characters, settings,
and events stand for abstract or moral concepts. As Lewis said, "A
strict allegory is like a puzzle with a solution." In an allegory,
everything and everyone in them represents something else. The
Chronicles of Narnia are not allegories. These stories were meant to
be like "a flower whose smell reminds you of something you can't
quite place."

Here is something else that may be of interest, that C.S. Lewis said
"Some people seem to think that I began by asking myself how I could
say something about Christianity to children; then fixed on the fairy
tale as an instrument, then collected information about child
psychology and decided what age group I'd write for; then drew up a
list of basic Christian truths and hammered out 'allegories' to
embody them. This is all pure moonshine. I couldn't write in that
way. It all began with images; a faun carrying an umbrella, a queen
on a sledge, a magnificent lion. At first there wasn't anything
Christian about them; that element pushed itself in of its own
accord."

Personally, I believe there is a lot of symbolism or 'supposal' in
all of the Chronicles. It IS there. Aslan himself speaks of
the 'hidden story' "But there" as he tells them "I have another name.
You must learn to know me by that name. This is the reason why you
were brought into Narnia, that by knowing me here for a little while,
you may know me better there"

I apologize, I can't remember what book that comes from. :-(

As to Eustace's un-dragoning...doesn't that remind you of us? The
mistakes that we make may turn us into a person--or dragon--that at a
different time, would have been abhored by us. When we submit and
repent of our human failings, we are given that grace, that help,
that salvation that un-dragons us. At least, that's what it reminds
me of.

I don't know how anyone could help noticing that... One of the more
obvious parallels in the books. :)
It's sweet, but some people find it overly Christian and embarrassing.
It's one of those things I hope they'll include in the movie.
