Miles Davis, "Masqualero", from the album Sorcerer. Each musician patiently draws out beautiful solos over an unfurled, understated rhythm, with clear, realized temperance. Every track beginning with the album ESP in 1965, followed by Miles Smiles, Sorcerer and ending with Nefertiti in 1967, are genius.

Ben Webster, "Londonderry Air", from Stormy Weather. This a live track from an excellent, just about as perfect as it gets, performance.

Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins, "Friday The 13th", from Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins. A great pairing of musicians. Both styles are rich, and naturally defined. I didn't find Rollins until I heard him play with Monk. His solos fit really well alongside Monk's stagger.

Eric Dolphy, "The Baron", from Out There. Just have to hear the wicked, scraping cello solo by Ron Carter on this one. It's a short track. Dolphy is one of the most original soloists of Jazz. His style sounds as if it was developed without influence. If you're looking for a free jazz record, Out There is one of the most accessible I've heard. It's got this sort of hushed patience about it.

It has to be said that they are now completely out there, on the front and on their own.
We should all be as brave.
I suppose that's the point.

Oliver Nelson, "Teenie's Blues", from Blues And The Abstract Truth. More from Eric Dolphy, as well as an excellent solo from Oliver Nelson; he builds it up to a euphoric blues height. The album itself is great, perfect from track to track.

Charles Mingus, "Original Faubus Fables", from Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus. The confrontational Mingus warns the audience, "No noise. Don't rattle the ice in your glasses." It's a flat, even caution. Eric Dolphy rips and swings various riffs and fills and solos that emphasize the intended discomfort. This is America, October 1960.
