The LLS is a
collaborative vision of the Latino organizations at UT to unite and empower the
Latino students by building awareness of Latino culture, coalition among future
Latino leaders and assisting Latinos to become committed in their community
(LLC). The Latino Leardership Council presented in the LLS serveral activities
such as workshops, about leadership and activism, and, more importantly, it
presented many distinguished speakers who adressed latino students with no
other intention than encourage our ability to think and create a change for our
communities.
The State of the Latino Address was given by Ernesto Nieto, who founded the
National Hispanic Institute. He focused on the place of the Latinos in the U.S
in the 21st Century. His main goal was to make students believe that it is
possible to build our community with intellectualism and that we are assets of
talent to create change. As he said, “On your shoulder rests the future of our
community… turn around, there is no one else to lead but you.” Moreover, Nieto
told us that our community deserves more and that we shouldn’t feel sorry about
our race but feel embraced by its beauty. According to Nieto the future leaders
of the Latino community have many challenges in the 21st century. However, in
addition to think about illegal inmigration or lack of school attendance,
latino leaders should keep their identity and speak spanish, keep their family
traditions, reconstruct latinos’ identity by loving their community and its
music, literature, art, and more importantly, leaders must believe in their
ability to dream and create a better reality of their people.

Work Cited
“Latino Leadership Council.” Latino Leadership Summit.
