It's far from an average day for Jewish Vinz, Arab Saïd and black African Hubert, a friend has been beaten to coma in custody while their estate has been rioting.<br />The trio try to maintain their ducking and diving lifestyle while dodging various dangers the most aggressive being the local police. The tension mounts as the day continues, not helped by a brutal police interrogation for Vinz and Saïd, during which a gendarme explains to a colleague the most effective way to administer a beating, nor by Vinz revealing he's found a police revolver lost during the previous night's riot.<br />Despite their testing existence the film almost draws towards a happy ending which is then twisted back into cruel reality in the last sad minute.<br />"La Haine" is an incredible piece of work which has a filmic total far greater than the sum of it's parts. Firstly it's a cracking portrayal of the contemporary France which minorities and the poor find themselves subject to. It's stylishly shot in grainy black and white, with a mix of highly mobile and static cinematography and is perfectly paced. The intense action scenes are short and shaky and those of urban boredom slow and long.<br />Partly funded by a community arts grant it's unlike any similarily funded film from any other European state. Similarily it was a big success, selling half a million tickets in it's first six weeks of release and even bringing the French Cabinet to arrange a hurried viewing because it created such an incredible domestic political furore.<br />It also set the three actors and the director on to healthy careers, Vinz was played by a relatively unknown Vincent Cassel who has since become the most famous; Saïd Taghmaoui and Hubert Koundé have also enjoyed many roles since; and the director and writer Mathieu Kassovitz (who also played one of the Front National skinheads) has gone on to most recently direct "Gothika" and star in "Munich".<br />Finally it had a brief but positive effect on what had become a slightly stale French film industry. It rejected the two most powerful trends; "heritage" films <span style="font-style: italic;">-`le cinéma du patrimoine'</span> such as "Cyrano de Bergerac" which specialise in a tasteful Disneyfication to delight the older more middle-classed viewer; and <span style="font-style: italic;">`le cinéma du look'</span> like "Nikita" based on advertisements and MTV videos aimed at younger escapist viewers. Co-written by Lang and his wife Thea von Harbou this tale of a serial child murderer stalking city streets undetected offers a highly watchable film without basking in the sordid theme. Rather it holds relevance to modern viewers, but more thoughtfully than anything you're likely to see, read or hear now.<br />The lead was Peter Lorre's first role, masterfully played with the natural creepiness which he became so famous for. Every moment he's on screen is a delight with his expressive acting owing more to silent pictures but gently blessed with the addition of sound.<br />The other acting is high quality, the photography superb; murders are only hinted at with simple visual metaphors, such as lunch set at table but lacking child, while the style is pure noir.<br />When released it was highly influencial, partly because it was one of Germany's first films with sound but also because German film enjoyed a great reputation between the wars similar to that enjoyed by modern French cinema today.<br />Hitler's rise to power and the decimation of the creative industries led to both Lang and Lorre moving abroad, a wise move considering images from "M" appeared in the Nazi propaganda film "Der Ewige Jude" (The Eternal Jew) as an example of the contortion of <span style="font-style: italic;">"the normal sense of Justice"</span>.<br />I've avoided giving away the twists and turns of plot because my meagre words can't match the celluloid tale, and it's far too good to spoil. It was always a project close to his heart and with the momentum of the rings behind him and a huge budget and studio backing it was obvious his dreams could be realised.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">So what we have here was certainly the necessary elements to make a huge popcorn blockbusting movie-and has he succeeded?</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">Well yes and no is the answer to that one. Certainly KK works effectively on many levels. It has the big budget feel to it-but certainly lacks in other areas.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">Its pace seems slightly odd with Jackson deliberately attempting to build the excitement with a long slow drawn out first hour which he does by padding out some of the characters in the movie-I found this totally unnecessary. What we have here is a movie where the hero is the monkey. Everything else plays second fiddle-and to pad out a lot of the characters many of which die seems a pointless exercise and one that doesn’t add a great deal to the film except give the film goer a sore arse.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">By the time the extended </span><st1:place><st1:placename><span lang="EN-GB">Skull</span></st1:placename><span lang="EN-GB"> </span><st1:placetype><span lang="EN-GB">Island</span></st1:placetype></st1:place><span lang="EN-GB"> section arrives I felt my attention was starting to wane somewhat.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">At this point however </span><st1:city><st1:place><span lang="EN-GB">Jackson</span></st1:place></st1:city><span lang="EN-GB"> really flexes his muscles. The characters come face to face with the natives in what can only be described as a very scary and bloody sequence that seems to have come straight from the cutting room floor of LOTR-the passing resemblance to the Orcs certainly didn’t go unnoticed. From this point on the action becomes relentless-infact too relentless.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">The slow initial pacing is completely thrown out of the window and we’re bombarded with CGI effect after CGI effect (some of which is slightly rough around the edges) with lots of death, screaming and close up shots of KK. After the first glimpse of KK-and when the amazement of the facial expressions along with other CGI effects had sunk in-once again I felt somewhat bored.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">Herein lies the weakness. I just didn’t feel engaged enough with the movie-certainly not enough to warrant a 3hour and 15 minute sitting.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">By the time the final sequence arrives (by far the best in terms of FX) I was wanting it to end. Just as I was waiting for the boat to sink in Titanic-the ape falling off the </span><st1:place><st1:placename><span lang="EN-GB">Empire</span></st1:placename><span lang="EN-GB"> </span><st1:placetype><span lang="EN-GB">State</span></st1:placetype><span lang="EN-GB"> </span><st1:placetype><span lang="EN-GB">Building</span></st1:placetype></st1:place><span lang="EN-GB"> couldn’t have come quick enough.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">Certainly the performances of the leads are excellent (particularly Jack Black)-the cinematography is breathtaking but that is of no consequence-what we have here is an exercise in blockbusting action with a CGI hammer wrapped around ones head several times.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">If this is your cup of tea KK will certainly float your boat. There is, apparently, style, wit. kick ass action, and snappy dialogue throughout - just what you'd hope for really.<br /><br />But what we actually got was a turgid thousand year old plot, with characters plucked straight form every other western in space. A raggedy band of outlaws, rebels against an all powerful 'civilisation' on the outskirts of the universe, a knackered old ship, a dangerous (but unlettgoable) cargo, and a mission they will probably never return from. Hmmm, where have we heard all that before?<br /><br />Oh the irony when we discover where the reavers came from! Oh the pathetic disgust when we see how easily the chief baddy is converted to the side of righteousness. Oh how we laughed when at least one of the 'heros' died. But only one - not enough.<br /><br />There are a few good lines, I laughed three or four times, and there a a few nice shots, but not that many. It's stuck in its TV origins and there seemed to be no attempt to strike out from that. Romero<br />Cast - Simon Baker - Riley; John Leguizamo - Cholo; Dennis Hopper - Kaufman; Asia Argento - Slack; Robert Joy - Charlie; Eugene Clark - Big Daddy; Joanne Boland - Pretty Boy; Tony Nappo - Foxy; Jennifer Baxter - Number 9<br /><br />Following on from his previous commentaries on racism, the environbment and consumerism, the latest in Romero's socio-political critique of late western capitalism and it's inherent tendencies to self-destruction clearly bases itself around an assault on the prevailing real politik following the twin towers and war on 'terrorism'.<br /><br />The film opens with a typical post-apocalyptic looking gang of anti-stench warriors together with their cobbled together armoured vehicle Dead Reckoning going into battle against a large crowd of zombies in search of 'essential supplies' (food, guns, and maybe some beer). Turns out such raids are essential as the only real live humans are pretty well trapped in a heavilly walled New York City, where they can't grow food - so have to go out and steal it. <br /><br />However when one of the workers in uniform, Cholo (John Leguizamo), attempts to demand that he is rewarded for his long service by a place in 'Fiddlers Green' - the twin towers trope - a large skyscraper reserved for the rich and powerful, from which the living poor are as excluded as the dead are from the city itself, he is rejected by patriarchal figure of Kaufmann (Dennis Hopper). Thus he must seek his revenge, by threatening to blow up the tower itself!<br /><br />All american hero Riley (Simon Baker)is therefore sent out on one last mission to stop Cholo and rescue Dead Reckoning for Kaufmann. He picks up a couple more misfits and off they go - but it's the people of the city they are interested in saving, not Kaufmann or his cronies.<br /><br />Meanwhile, the dead are becoming almost conscious and are marching on the city....<br /><br />The dialectical relationship between the workers (in and out of uniform) and the dead (essentially the 'third world' peasantry, Romero is clearing establishing the nature of the theory of labour aristocracy in relation to the two groups) is a fascinating development, where we see Cholo as essentially the role of the union leadership (simply wanting a slightly bigger share of the pie for himself/[i]his[/i] cronies, rather than a fundamental shift in the nature of power), versus Rileys (an explicit call to tear down all the walls, which keep the workers locked in as much as the dead locked out) revolutionary socialism. That the oppressed turn on each other before turning on the bosses is shown clearly in both this aspect of the film, and in the way many of the dead fight each other for scraps, before achieving a consciousness that enables them to unite and march on the city.<br /><br />Here Romero boldly breaks with Marxist theory (or at least the common Leninist version thereof)by having that consciousness come from within the 'class' itself - the gas pump attendant whose vestigial memory allows him to begin to use tools and to organise the dead <span style="font-style:italic;">as</span> a class for itself.<br /><br />The only criticism of the film would be in that Romoero's visual representations of the destructiveness of US imperialism is far too weak. Tho there are many scenes of explicit and horrific gore, they cannot come close to the true depths of depravity experienced by Iraqi civilians - even in scenes such as that where Big Daddy (the leader of the dead) stomps his foot down and splatters another combatants head forty feet across the screen cannot compare the the brutality of the Basra road, or Falluja. The scene where a (living) soldier falls and is blown to pieces by his own grenade is, however, a telling commentary on the 'friendly fire' deaths the US are so keen to avoid mentioning.<br /><br />One cannot give away the ending of the film, of course, however, it would certainly be fair to say that it is in keeping with the political and didactic tone of the previous ninety minutes. Sides must be chosen, even by the 'aristocrats', and indeed they are. <br /><br />All in all, a magnificent marxist allegory for the twenty-first century. In the US he is nothing short of massive and his name is a big draw for audiences there-but his films here have only done fairly well compared to box office receipts in his home country.<br />Why this could be down to a number of reasons. His humour fails to translate well or he's just plain shit. I strongly suspect the answer lies somewhere half way between (although like Carey in Sunshine of The Eternal Spotless Mind-he does better when he plays against type i.e Punch Drunk Love)<br />The Longest Yard does him no favours at all. Clearly what we have here is a star vehicle movie with zero substance. TLY tells the lame story of a washed up ex football star who ended out disgraced from the game for allegedly throwing a match. The movie opens with him stealing his girlfriends car whilst drunk and subsequently gets himself arrested and locked down in a tough US jail. In there he manages to win favour with the warden by forming what should be a team of wash out football players to play-yes you guessed it-a team of guards. If this is all sounding familiar to you by now then the answer to that suspicion is indeed true. Its a remake of the far superior1974 movie Mean Machine(UK Title)/The Longest Yard (US Title). Remakes very rarely sit well with me-on the whole arguably they are dross-and this one certainly doesnt break with tradition. The director Peter Segal obviously loves Sandler-having previously worked with him on the abysmally poor 50 First Dates and the truely unfunny Anger Management-he delves even further into this director/actor relationship sinking himself even further into the pit of despair.<br />TLY simply isn't remotely funny. When your watching a movie which is intended to be a comedy and one that illicts one slight belly laugh you know your watching dross-and bad dross at that. Sandler muddles along with Chris Rock who has always been hit and miss for me (stick to the live shows is my advice) both delivering dreadful lines that truely miss the bulls eye of comedy. The films soundtrack is a mixture of hip hop and some awful sounding rock type anthems which supposedly pumps up the viewer to plump for the underdogs which by this time I had lost total interest in. A cameo appearance by a well worn Burt Reynolds does nothing for this movie whatsoever. Some of the characters are bordering on the offensive with gross stereotypes of homosexuals and the black community. This film is a pile of shit-and the cherry on the top of this Mr Whippy turd is the blatant product placement of McDonalds in this movie (yes you read that right-McDonalds in a prison). By the end of this movie I couldnt care who won or lost the finale game. When Chris Rocks character bites the bullet and the cross read CARETAKER I was mulling over the possibility that the name on his cross should've read DIRECTOR instead. Yes folks-that bad.<br />If I hadnt been watching this movie at 36,000 ft (it was an inflight movie) I wouldve walked out. Come to think of it-freefalling at 36,000ft with no parachute is far more attractive than sitting through what can only be described as a painful experience. It was directed by a performance artist, that was all I could remember. But, there was nothing else on that night anyway, so she had little choice.<br /><br />The opening was somewhat worrying, as it was a piece by the chartacter played by said performance artist (Miranda July as Christine ), and it was really bloody awful tosh. However, it rapidly improved as we meet Richard (Hawkes, Sol Star from Deadwood), who is in the process of splitting up with his wife, and who gives the impression of having some kind of mental health issues going on. It got even better a few more minutes in as we followed a funeral procession for a goldfish.<br /><br />I suppose it's a film about the fragility of relationships and the lousy communication that happens when trying to initiate them (whether that's over the net, the written word, or actual one-to-one conversations). Most of the main characters are after one or other of the others, and this often leads to some incredibly disturbing situations, yet ones which are also incredibly funny as well. So disturbing are they, tho, that some Christian mag has condemned the film as only to be viewed by paedophiles! They are, of course, quite wrong, as is shown by the culmination of each 'relationship', which are hilariously and thoroughly believably done.<br /><br />Other than that, it's a pretty 'slight' film, but well worth seeing for the performances of the five youngsters in it, all of whom are excellant, particularly Brandon Ratcliff as seven year old Robby, who is absolutely astounding.<br /><br />Back and forth. Prior to Crash film maker Paul Figgis has been attached to many projects (mainly as a writer) as diverse as 'Due South' and.....erm...'The Tracey Ulman Show'. However this isn't a past the studios want us to know about-and lets face it when you've written the screenplay for the multi Oscar winning 'Million dollar Baby' what other credentials do you need to espouse? Its this single biggest and most well known credit that is splashed on film posters along with some choice film quotes which possibly could lead one to believe that this film will be excellent. Well not this cinema goer.<br /><br />Crash is a disjointed non linear narrative-a technique rinsed so many times and made popular by the far superior film maker John Altman (the phrase Altmanesque is oft quoted to describe such a film), that fails miserably. Its a film which has a 'message' with no point. It could be argued that its a film about the 'futility of racism' which is an admirable point to make-what it actually turns out to be is a ham fisted poorly made film that relentlessly batters you with racism in every scene.<br /><br />There is little redemption-the structure of the movie doesn't tie itself up neatly in the end and it leaves with you with no real answers-no reflective period just an empty feeling and a nasty one at that. Figgis not only takes control of the directing but also scripts and writes the screenplay for this movie and you get the impression that he is a director with a 'vision'-but what that vision is remains unclear. Its clear that this film is personal to Figgis but somehow he allowed what could've been a potentially great film sink even further with some dire casting-including the truly awful Brendon 'George of The Jungle' Fraser and Sandra 'I Only do Sandra' Bullock. Don Cheadle does a grand job of grimacing and seems to act in a shockingly restrained manner (compared to previous roles he has played) and even the normally reliable Matt Dillon puts in a 'turn up on the day and collect my pay cheque' perfomance.<br /><br />Crash is a wannabe film that resembles many films but plagiarises poorly. The musical score is totally ratcheted up to annoyingly dramatic levels. Actor close ups only work when the acting is good-which in this case it clearly isn't. There is some interesting cinematography in this film but you get the feeling that he is trying to over arch into 'stylish' to give the film some sort of credibility. Some of the film resembles a Made for TV Movie and some of the story strands border on the ridiculous.<br /><br />Crash is a deeply unsatisfying movie that simply tries to hard. Its messy film making that doesn't know what it wants to be-the bastardised son Magnolia whose had sex with the aunty of Short Cuts. He talks to almost no one, the elderly former owners of the hotel being an exception, tho they barely comuniate either. The young waitress Sofia tries to engage him in conversation, but he keeps ignoring her. there are a <em>lot</em> of silences in this film, at times it seemed like the speakers had gone in the cinema.<br /><br />Slowly it becomes apparent that Titta works for the mafia. Having screwed up on a big investment for them when he was a legitimate broker, he now acts as their bag man. He has no life. His wife left him ten years ago, taking the kids who no longer even can be bothered to speak to him. He has a younger brother, who he clearly doesnt like, and a memory of a neighbour from twenty years ago, who he still describes as his best friend. He is a very very lonely man, one without any imagination. Everything, it seems, has been sucked from him.<br /><br />Until he finally acquiesces and speaks to Sofia, after which he has to start considering what the consequences of love might actually be.<br /><br />And what are they? Well, it's bloody hard to say from this, or even whether he actually had any concept of what love is anyway. His fate seems more determined by the consequences of boredom than love to me, but perhaps they are the same thing? Ultimately there is, of course, tragedy, and more loneliness, which only comes after putting yourself on the line for....something. Whether the object of Tittas desire really returns his feelings divide me and mrs belboid, there were indications in both directions, which only throw up the question of what is meant by love anyway? Another prison in which Titta is trapped? One, again, not of his own making, over which he has any power or control? Whichever, it is a feeling you must give in to.<br /><br />There's a point where Titta is pulling a fast one, where he says something like 'if you're going to bluff, you've got to go all the way', and that seems to be the 'message' of the film (to the extent it has one). IN life, in love, you gotta go all the way, whichever way you choose, or your life will be wasted.<br /><br />There is much to enjoy in the film, the soundtrack is superb, its use of silence as strong as those within the script itself. When there actually is any dialogue its very sharp and to the point, words are not there to be wasted. We've had them probably as long as movies themselves. From Little Shop of Horrors right the way through to Weird Science the nerd has been embraced by Hollywood with open arms. Lets face it-the nerd provides us with entertainment, so in that sense there will always be mileage in movies about nerds.<br /><br />However every now and again a movie comes along which not only celebrates 'nerdom' but actually has cult written all over it from the word to go. Napoleon Dynamite is that film. A surprise sleeper hit of 2004 Napoleon Dynamite doesn't exactly break the film mould with its simplistic and obvious storyline. That is nerd sets out to prove he's more than a nerd. Only this time there isn't any nerd gets the girl, or nerd builds muscles kicks sand in the face of other school bullies...this nerd stays a nerd.<br /><br />Napoleon lives with his grandmother and brother Kip Dynamite (brilliantly played by Aaron Ruell) who is a compulsive net surfer looking for a potential mate. Napoleon then by chance makes friends with a new school student who decides to run for school president. Napoleon decides to aid him in his quest for what seems a completely unobtainable goal. Two nerds fighting for support against your stereotypical US prom queen type Miss Popular (played by Haylie Duff)<br />Dynamite played by Jon Heder (who himself has only ever been in two previous films) delivers his lines with a deliberate wooden style that never grates. The script is bristling with some really funny one liners which are equally given out to the major players in this incredibly funny film.<br /><br />This is a sparkling debut from director Jared Hess who previously only worked as an assistant cameraman-he ably takes up the directors chair as well as writing the script. ND never lapses into run of the mill film making. It even at one point surprises the audience with what I can only describe as one of the best film scenes I have ever seen when Napoleon is forced to dance on stage to support his friends running for school president<br /><br /></span><span style="color: rgb(0, 51, 0);font-family:trebuchet ms;font-size:130%;" >The film is an exercise in self-mocking littered with sight gags that turns the art of being a nerd to a a higher level. Its a comedy film that will make you laugh out loud and chuckle quietly to yourself...a mixture of slap stick and silly one liners.<br />I recommend this film to anyone who has that silly sense of humor-its crass and simplistic but pulls it off beautifully. Of late the slasher flick has had to outdo the last-twists have been introduced, more gore and even more violence. Switchblade Romance is a particularly nasty film of the genre that confirms everything about the horror film I dislike. Extended scenes of violence, exploitation of the female sexuality and rape presented to the viewer as 'entertainment' The plot is simple-man chases women and kills along the way. Somehow a twist is made to make this film more palatable but it just left a nasty taste in my mouth. Its violent with a dark misogonystic undertone. If you like your slasher flicks Ive no doubt this will appeal to you. If however you dislike violent gory movies with no plot, extremely distasteful scenes and exploitation of the female body then avoid this movie at all costs. Indeed 6th Sense was the film industries best kept secret-with critics refusing to reveal the clever twist. Since that time however Shaylman has chosen to stick to the same route, that is originality with a twist. However what he has pulled off is 'lets see how ludicrous we can make the twist'. With 6th Sense he managed to oull it off-with Unbreakable he pushed the limits a bit to much and with The Village he simply has gone to far. The directors trademarks are still there. Breathtaking cinematography, beautiful set pieces and an eye to detail which truely is wonderful. The pace of the film draws you in-so in that respect he has done well. However its in the last 10 minutes the film falters. Brody does a great job of hamming up his role, pheonix holds it together remarkably well-but in the end its all for nothing. The twist truely is one of the most daftest endings I have ever seen with hardly any explanation for it. Shaylman truely has great vision as a director and producer but he really needs to put down the book of 'How to direct a wacky Twist' and get on with what he does best-making beautifully sublime films-hopefully without the silly ending! This has all-too-often been the case in the past for me.<br /><br /> I had been looking forward to seeing Batman Begins since late 2004 when I first read about the cast and director involved. That being the case, I may as well get straight to the point: I was not disappointed with this film.<br /><br /> Christopher Nolan first made his name with Memento, and although Batman Begins is more mainstream and ‘polished’, it nevertheless has his stamp all over it, both in the well- put-together flashback sequences that make up the first third of the film, and in other parts too: this is no cheesy, slick, cartoony Spiderman-style film. This is Batman as he really would be yet, strangely, totally true to the comics.<br /><br /> The cast, as I said above, looked good on paper. However, there is always a fear when such a great array of famous actors is assembled that they play on their own fame, rather than simply act the part. That fear is more than quashed here, as just about everyone is superb.<br /><br /> I’m not usually the biggest Gary Oldman fan, but here he goes totally against the usual Oldman grain and is all the better for it as Gordon (who looks eerily similar to a young version of Gordon from the Batman animated series, a world away from the bumbling idiot of the Tim Burton Batman films). One scene that I particularly enjoyed was the one where Gordon leaves his house and finds Batman sitting on the steps above him. The mood and tone felt like it had been lifted directly from a comic book.<br /><br /> Christian Bale has been threatening to be a major star ever since, as a fresh-faced twelve year old, he was superb in the Empire of the Sun. Since then he has flirted with various cinematic disasters (Reign of Fire, anyone?) as well as some decent indie films (the Machinist) and the not-as-bad-as-its-made-out-to-be Equilibrium. Here, however, Bale takes his work to a new level. No doubt cynics will say, after watching this, that such a great talent is wasted on a character who they would presumably regard as being fit only for childrens’ cartoons, but Bale makes Batman, and Bruce Wayne, utterly believable and real. If a sequel is planned, they must make sure at all costs that he, and Oldman, return, because they are both so perfect for the parts.<br /><br /> The rest of the film is also star studded – Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine. I especially, of these, liked Caine as Alfred. Although playing the part very differently to Michael Gough in the older films, it worked perfectly in the context of Nolan’s darker, grittier take on Batman. Cillian Murphy is also great as Dr Crane/The Scarecrow, and will prove to be one of the better actors to come out of Ireland in some years.<br /><br /> Unlike many, I personally also thought Katie Holmes was fine. It is possible that next to such a great cast and with such a good script and director, Holmes looked like the weak link in comparison, but let’s face it: she is hardly comparable to, say, Jar Jar Binks, which is what some of the more crazed fans seemed to be suggesting.<br /> If anything, were I to look for a fault in the casting, I would have to point to Tom Wilkinson as Carimine Falcone. Even as a non-American, I found his accent sounded rather fake and unconvincing.<br /><br /> I also loved the fighting scenes. Whilst they might seem, to some, ‘choppy’ and blurred, I thought this method worked amazingly well. Batman doesn’t use guns, but he is usually fighting people who do. These should not put you off as they both deliver contrary to recent form and WOTW is unlike <span style="font-style:italic;">Minority Report</span>, their recent (and only?) collaboration.<br /><br />Recently Spielberg has been out of sorts: AI was conceptual nonsense, <span style="font-style:italic;">Minority Report</span> lacked punch, <span style="font-style:italic;">Catch Me If You Can</span> was the cinematic version of Sunday driving and I have heard nothing to suggest <span style="font-style:italic;">The Terminal</span> is worth seeing. Cruise's last, Collateral, saw him in his most aired and comfortable character, playing himself, flashing oft his pearlies. I am glad to report that both steer well clear of these troubled waters. Cruise is in a constant world of pain and Spielberg is magnificent directing action with few words.<br /><br />Increasingly, many people rate films according to a broad acceptance of what genre the film falls into. <span style="font-style:italic;">Touching the Void</span> (documentary), <span style="font-style:italic;">The Sphere</span> (science fiction) and <span style="font-style:italic;">Kiss of the Dragon</span> (kung fu) - all are excellent examples of their genre but not necessarily excellent films. War of the Worlds is good in its genre and in its own right. It is nice to be able to say its a great film and not append that with the words "for an action film"<br /><br />The plot is well known. Martians invade kicking the living bejesus out of earth. It's inevitably wrapped in family story where Cruise is the divorced father who has the kids dumped on him for the weekend by the ex, the weekend earmarked by Martians for Earthly ass kicking. It's this wrapper which provides the instinctive and predictably bad final two minutes which Spielberg should be ashamed of. <br /><br />There is surprisingly little dialogue in WOTW. This leads to an acutely visual film which is something of a rarity these days. The most dramatic moments are all visual such as the glazing over of an alien eye, a mass of humanity trying to board a small boat and the well designed tripod alien machines. The nice thing is that the effects don't take over, unlike recent ruinous Star Wars films. Instead they illustrate the human story of running and not knowing and being impossibly shafted beyond comprehension. It is a film not about survival but inevitable annihilation. There are also some inspired aural effects too such as the alien 'call' which is haunting and eerie. I can't remember the last time a film's sound was so central and so enjoyable.<br /><br />For an action flick, there's little of the usual "welcome to the party" type lines and associated jingoistic flag waving. WOTW comes across as more sophisticated than that. The absence of the usual excessive 'jump' moments is another indicator that Spielberg felt he didn't need to employ conventional devices. He does ratchet up the tension again and again and again and just when you think its about to pause for thought, it doesn't. Probably the best scene in the movie is in the crumbling basement of a half-loon half-survivor played very well by Tim Robbins. It is in this scene where you see the aliens themselves who are very well designed and look great. It's a horrid hide and seek moment.<br /><br />Be warned however, that there is a heavy nasty overtone in the film and I would hesitate to take little people to see it. It probably deserves a 15 rather than a 12A in the UK. There are some quite disturbing scenes, including people being vaporised and a fantastic river of blood shot.<br /><br />One to see on the big screen. The story is about a young boy, Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio) who watches his Father, Priest Vallon, (Liam Neeson), a Catholic Immigrant from Ireland, killed while fighting in a wild brawl against his rival, William 'Bill the Butcher' Cutting.<br /><br />The Butcher is the leader of a gang called "the Natives" who believe they have a claim to the area because they were all born in the USA.<br />The Dead Rabbits as a gang is destroyed and never to be talked about by anyone in the Five points again.<br /><br />After his Father is killed the young Amsterdam spends 12 years in a Orphanage and then as a young man is released and returns to the Five Points area. He bumps into a few old friends and eventually comes into contact with the Butcher.<br />Amsterdam becomes close to the Butcher who looks after the young man and teaches him how things are done. Amsterdam is getting close so he can kill the man who killed his Father.<br /><br />Intertwined with the main story of the film is the sub plot showing the issues of the time, the Civil war, and it's relation to the freedom of the slaves. Scorsese brings this into the film as if what was going on in Five Points was a part of the whole of the history and birth of New York (America?), and in a way it was, but the same story could have been told in a different city in a different country anywhere in the world.<br />Call me a cynic but I fail to see how a couple of street gangs affected Abraham Lincoln's decision making.<br /><br /><br />Overall, Gangs of New York is quite a visually pleasing movie, nothing like a bit of blood and guts to add atmosphere ;-).<br />The Set and costumes were great. The designers obviously went into a lot of effort to get the detail of the era just right. It was a credit to the people who put it all together. The set and costume design both received Academy award nominations too btw.<br />It was filmed in Rome, Italy (Cinecitta Studios) ... who, in my opinion, did a great job.<br /><br />I watched this Film not long after it was released and watched it again tonight, it's an OK film but I believe so much more could have been done with it, and Leanado De Caprio just doesn't do the tough guy bit very well. There's so many young male actors who could have played the part with a lot more plausibility. This one didn't and to be honest the main reason I rented this movie was because 3 more movies only cost another 2 dollars and I've already watched most of the movies at the Video rental place, and this one had just come off the "Overnight" shelf and onto the "2 dollars a week" shelf ....So in the basket it went.<br /><br />What was it like?<br />Basic plot ... A Climatologist all of a sudden finds out world is in danger, tells Government, they don't listen to him, he goes off to save the world from this climatic catastrophe and in the meantime his kid gets into danger, oh, and a couple of the main characters fall in love.<br />Hollywood disaster movies are just a bit too predictable.<br /><br />If it weren't for the special effects this movie would literally have nothing to offer at all....The script was poorly written, in fact it was a slap in the face for anyone who likes a story with a plot. The main characters were one dimensional, there just wasn't anything you could really like or dislike about them and the story was completely disjointed with ridicules subplots.<br /><br />I just get annoyed when these people make a film with a massive budget but still include scenes that look as though they have been written and shot at the last minute. It looks as though some of the scenes have been added just to fit in another Product Placement add. or something. The scene described below is one of those, it doesn't make sense and in a situation like the one the people were in, why risk everything when you don't have to?...Or the girl who cuts her leg, she leaves it until it has festered and she has blood poisening!...I mean c'mon ... she didn't even clean the wound when she went to the toilet? .... and considering there were first aid kits all over the place it seems even more unlikely. I don't mind a bit of Artistic licence but when there's no need for it why stretch a point so far that it actually spoils the movie? Why treat the paying audience like idiots?<br /><br />So, we have a ship that has floated into Manhattan, the survivors split into 2 main groups, one group, the majority of the people, plan to walk south where it's warm and the other group, consisting of the son of the Climatologist and the girl with the cut in her leg decide to stay put. OK, the group that stays put needs food so he goes outside into the freezing weather to get some and while in this big freighter that floated down Manhattan they get attacked by these wolves that escaped from the Zoo...now, the people who are walking are dying in droves but of course the wolves don't go for easy pickings, they would rather risk their lives trying to attack the 2 healthiest and strongest survives left. Originally released in 1998 it stars some of the best known faces about the Hills - Matt Damon, Ed Norton and John Malcovich. Playing the sophisticated law student, Gretchen Mol does a great job as Damon's straight-laced female foil.<br /><br />Mike (Damon) finds himself spotting a huge gambling debt for his recently released friend Worm (Norton) - <span style="FONT-STYLE: italic">"I know all the reasons I shouldn't be here, but sometimes reasons don't matter, but no one's ever stood up for Worm"</span>. This is poker movie, you can guess the rest, right? It's Hollywood after all? Mike will play for his friend, Texas hold'em no limits and win the money and the girl.<br /><br />Well, no actually. What is so good here is that it centres around the relationships of its protagonists. This is a character driven movie, not one where the writing gets hauled around behind the plot. There's some great tension in this film wound up by real depth in quality characters that don't get seen enough these days. In particular John Turturro plays something deviously close to Al Pacino's Carlito Brigante in Carlito's Way. He's only a peripheral player at most, but has a great presence as a seasoned grinder who does what he needs but without the ambition other than to grow old. Turturro is the voice of reason, for Mike, telling him to forget his friend and his debt. You can't help feel for Joey when Mike slashes out, echoing Worm's snide aside that Joey doesn’t have the balls for the big game.<br /><br />Malcovich is supreme as the nouveaux riche Russian head honcho of an underground poker palace. I didn't even recognise the lad until his final few screen minutes. And what a wardrobe! Norton as Worm is superbly greasy and Gretchen Mol is temptation herself. Which left me with a few questions towards the end. That said, Damon never manages to shake off an axiomatic metaphorical theme: life as a (poker) game. He later asks of Mol <span style="FONT-STYLE: italic">"Why does this still seem like gambling to you? It's a skill game"</span>. By now, he's all in, life and all and he is literally playing by the seat of his pants, for the seat of his pants. To borrow an americanism.<br /><br />But if poker is a turn off, don't fret. As I've pointed out, Rounders is much more about relationships than poker. There is some action on the green baize, and as you'd expect there is a grand finale of sorts. Despite my misgivings, my curiosity got the better of me and, last night whilst bored, discovered that the aforementioned movie was on ITV2.<br /><br />Intrigued to see if it really was as bad as people have said I switched it on and settled down to have a good snigger.<br /><br />The first half hour was pretty poor: Modern-day-American speaking primitives living in wooden squalor, riding horses and hooting at each other occasionally whilst regaling each other with horror stories of the 'demons' that come from the sky. <br /><br />One of these modern primitives gets in a huff that everyone is so oppressed by the fear of said demons and the fact that people in his tribe keep disappearing, so he leaves the village and his bird and goes off for a trot on his horse, where he meets up with some members of another tribe who take him to a shopping mall.<br /><br />The shopping mall is part of a ruined city - clearly earth (bearing in mind this is all new to our hero - despite it seemingly being just over the hill from his rustic abode) and whilst fannying around gibbering about 'the gods' and various other things, the 'demons' (read: aliens) appear, zap 'em and capture them all<br /><br />It is at this point we discover the Aliens are seemingly all members of Sepultura and Gwar that have been put through some kind of 'bigulator' and then dressed by Vivienne Westwood.<br /><br />They live in a vast dome constructed over Denver (the aliens cannot breathe the same air as us and the gravity is all wrong) and have enslaved hundreds of our hero's hairy chums.<br /><br />John Travolta appears as the aliens' chief security officer and laughs menacingly a lot. <br /><br />Now it is here that the experience of watching this movie stopped become slightly painful and more akin to how I had always imagined having a stroke to feel like.<br /><br />I have never watched a movie with so many plot holes, inconsistencies and dreadful concepts as this rancid steaming pile. I will not bore you with all of the details, but here are the most salient points so as you may (hopefully) feel my pain:<br /><br />* An extremely lame plot involving senates, alien profit margins and a gold stealing scam emerges, with JT as the ringleader.<br />* JT Decides he needs 'man animal' help to do it (mine the gold that is) and decides to teach our hero the alien language (via some kind of learning bukkake machines which spunks sparkling knowledge into the eyes of its target).<br />* When JT is happy that our hero can converse fluently in alien-speak, he reveals to him that the aliens - now known to be called 'Psychlons' (shudder) - invaded the planet 1000 years ago and defeated all the forces of earth in - now remember this, as it is an important point - <strong>9 minutes</strong>.<br />* Our hero, now seemingly gone from caveman to genius in about 80 seconds starts casually wandering around the aliens' base with all of his captured mates, learning all about his hosts, then JT sees fit to take him to an old human library where he tells him to read some books for no apparent reason. A pristine tome containing 'The Declaration of Independence' (remember this book is more than a thousand years old) is the first and only thing he picks up and reads. (Bear in mind at this point no-one has taught him written English, and that the aliens do not speak it either.)<br />* Hero decides that him and his captured hairy chums can defeat the alien overlords if they Try Really Hard And Believe In Freedom. He rouses the rabble and starts to teach them all his new found knowledge.<br />* JT decides our hero should have a go in an alien flight simulator.<br />* When our man is proficient enough in flying alien spaceships, JT tells him and all his pals to go and mine him some gold from this mountain range and then come back so as he can be mean to them again and rub his hands with glee over a large pile of gold. If he doesn't come back, he will kill his bird who has turned up and now has an exploding collar on her.<br />* Our cunning hero instead teaches all his mates about alien technology, and how to kill the aliens with nuclear bombs. He then flies them all to some army base where they all get to have a go on a flight simulator (Earth was conquered 1000 years ago, remember - not quite sure how this stuff is quite so pristine, let alone working).<br />* They then fly to Fort Knox where they break in and steal lots of gold so as they can give JT his goods and still have time left to play in flight simulators.<br />* The hero and friends then find a bunch of machine guns, nuclear devices and lots of shiny-fuelled-and-ready-to-go Harrier jump-jets.<br />* Our plucky band then hatch their plan, attack the bad aliens with the harriers, blow most of their ships out of the sky, destroy their protective dome and teleport to the alien home planet with a nuclear bomb where (as it turns out) the air is allergic to nuclear bombs and makes the entire planet blow up when it is detonated. Please remember, these are the same aliens who 1000 years ago defeated the entire planet in <strong>9 minutes</strong> and now have had their asses kicked by 8 Harriers and a handful of unwashed mangy humans.<br />* The earthlings are finally free of alien rule and can play on flight simulators any time they damn well please.<br /><br />#phew#<br /><br />Apologies for the length of this but it is required to really get across the ineptitude and all round hatefulness of this film. If you have read this far, thank you.<br /><br />Anyway, my point is that this is conclusively the worst film ever made. It has no excuses. It has no redeeming features. It fails to even be 'so bad that it is good'. It is just deeply, deeply, upsettingly poor. Surely the money that went into this movie could have been better spent on...well, just about anything really.<br /><br /><strong>To sum up:</strong><br /><br />If 'Independence Day' (the movie, not the event ) contracted terminal amoebic dysentery, the final seeping, blood-and-mucus-ridden slime that slid out of its metaphorical anus just before it expired would be 'Battlefield Earth'.<br /><br /><strong>My Challenge:</strong><br /><br />Find me a worse movie than this with full justification. Groundhog Day is one of my all time top 5 films. It’s a masterpiece, a groundbreaking film, a work that manages to be at once simple and close, yet epic and deep.<br /><br />When Lost in Translation came out I heard that it was Murray’s best film since Groundhog Day and was very excited to see it. I was pretty disappointed by that film.<br /><br />But I digress. The Life Aquatic, for me, was much more enjoyable than Lost in Translation.<br /><br />Bill Murray plays a washed-up old celebrity ocean explorer (Steve Zissou) with a massive fan base. The film opens in semi documentary style, showing him on a previous expedition where a close friend of his was killed by an enormous shark.<br /><br />Then it cuts to the theatre where they are watching the film.<br /><br />He plans a new adventure to go back and find, and possibly kill, the shark that killed his friend. His estranged wife (played by the ever-reliable Anjelica Huston) declines the opportunity to come with him, but a man claiming to be his son, named Ned, comes, as well as a pregnant news reporter (Cate Blanchett).<br /><br />This is a truly unusual film. Its quite difficult to class it in one specific genre. One minute it is very funny, yet at the same time it has moments of high drama and tension, along with romance. It is realist yet surreal simultaneously. The ending is also fairly moving.<br /><br />Jeff Goldblum also puts in an excellent cameo as the coast guard whose equipment they raid.<br /><br />The part towards the end when, rejoined by his wife, Zissou descends into the ocean in his subterranean craft (which looks like something out of a Jules Verne novel) and they see the shark is pretty surreal too.<br /><br />A lot of critics disliked this film, but I enjoyed it a lot more than both Lost in Translation and Wes Anderson’s previous slightly overrated (in my opinion) The Royal Tenenbaums.<br /><br />If you like quirky films that mesh together different genres, this is well worth checking out. But viewing it again there are many problems with it.<br /><br />As a story, it's engaging: Richard Boyle [Woods] is an unpleasant American journalist on his uppers who, when he gets evicted from his apartment and his wife leaves him, decides to head down to El Salvador to get the scoop on the civil war brewing there in the early 80s. He takes with him his radio DJ pal, Dr Rock [Belushi], hooks up with the Salvodorean girlfriend he met the last time he was there, Maria [Carrillo], and tries to get down to business. <br /><br />Guerrillas are in the mountains, the government has cracked down brutally, there are boozed-up death squads cruising around killing campesinos, nuns and journalists alike, and the army is massacring anybody who moves. Reagen has just been elected, and U.S. policy is visibly shifting, with a plainclothes 'State Department' spook and a cigar-chewing American Colonel both doing their bit to combat the Red Menace...<br /><br />But Stone muddles and mangles real events, leaving the viewer confused by what is going on, beyond a character study of the slob-philosopher Boyle and the latest set piece. From the film, you don't get any sense of why the campesinos are up in arms, why there are paramilitary death squads, but for a brief sermon by Archbishop Romero. Stone reinforces the idea that the paramilitary death squads are just right-wing extremists outside of the government, when the reality is they were firmly under the control of the same oligarchy which backed the government. In comparison with the army, the death squads were small fry (see stats below). Stone also fails to explore the nature of the government at all, preferring instead the sideshow of 'Major Max' (based on 'Major Bob' D'Aubuisson), a communist-hating death squad leader... And even then he muddies the waters, implying he is the head of the Mano Blanco death squad, when in reality D'Aubuisson, a military intelligence officer, was in the Union Guerrera Blanca. And for some reason D'Aubuisson's political party, Arena, is renamed 'Arana'... Only details, but added together and they really do grate.<br /><br />There are some good performances - Woods and Belushi both convey a brittle realism, and Cynthia Gibb as tabloid TV hack Pauline Axelrod is great - but the clunky speeches Stone sticks in all over the shop are embarrassing. It's a shame, because there are some beautifully structured and photographed scenes (like the government counter-attack on Santa Ana), and the story of El Salvador - and America's rabid attack on it - is a fascinating one. Don't get me wrong, it's enjoyable enough - but Roger Spottiswoode's 'Under FIre' is a far superior and more sophisticated Yankee hack's-eye view of Central America. The scene that will really have you laughing out loud is the love/sex scene between Two of the puppets, it really has to be seen to be appreciated, it was so funny.<br />The Puppet masters and guy's operating the camera's along with the direction really did a great job.<br /><br />The premise of the film follows along similar lines as the original children's marionette series "the Thunderbirds", a bunch of law abiding citizens being financed by a rich guy to save the world from all the baddies .... trying to do the right thing but with such a heavy hand they tend to make things worse in the short term, sound familiar? But I am glad to say that I wasn't dissapointed, it was as much fun as I was hoping it would be.<br /><br />The movie is a Documentry of a British Heavy Metal band doing, what appears to be their final tour of the USA . The filmmaker, Marty DiBergi (Dog food commercials no less) follow's the band around from city to city documenting the day to day drama's and internal politics of the band.<br />It's a complete mock up of course with deliberate mistakes and attention to detail that makes this movie great fun to watch. Scenes like the one where Nigal is stopped at the Airport metal detecter because he has a whopping great cucumber wrapped in foil stuffed down his pants are classic and the boy's all primed up for the gig getting lost backstage at a concert is one you have to see to appreciate .<br /><br />If you are having a night in and are thinking about a Video or DVD to rent then this might be just the shot, lots of good laughs.<br /><br />The movie stars Christopher Guest (as Nigel the Lead guitarist), Rob Reiner (Marty DiBergi the maker of the "Rockumentry"), Micheal McKean (David- vocals, guitar) and Harry Shearer (Nigal Smalls- bass, and who does many voices in the Simpsons), all of who wrote the script for the movie with Rob Riener directing it.</span><br /><br /><img src="http://www.optimuscrime.com/images/spinal%20tap.jpg" /><br /><br /><span style="COLOR: rgb(0,51,0);font-family:trebuchet ms;font-size:100%;" >above - Nigel getting his "crotch" scanned at the Airport</span>Wessnoreply@blogger.com
