our team wanted to send something to our boss who was mourning his mothers death. We spent $18 each on jnf.org and made a mini forest on her name. the forest/plantation will be planted in Israel and named after her.

jnf sent a bouquet of flowers along with a card mentioning all our names to our boss.

any such organizations in India whom we can trust?

linkedin.com seems to be catching up very fast. almost all my senior directors, managers in all countries are on it. and the funny thing is that they are opening up their past.

looks like this is an orkut or facebook phenomenon but with an actual use. a friend was laid off 3 weeks ago and he found his new job using a reference from linkedin.

i would bet this to be one of the most sought after investment for google or msft along with the likes of dice or monster.

this blog completes 3 years this month..was checking couple of other templates..adsense..etc but mine seemed simple enough. .

Resignation

after much reluctance I finally sent my resignation today (friday evening) with a week notice. I am yet to get the response.

the thought of nostalgia after a few months is bothering me now and its probably weird.

not many of my friends or family are thrilled about leaving this beautiful company and go to an american behemoth practically unknown in India. they are also warning me about the looming recession and i told i cant stop moving ahead because something in future looks gloomy.

the coming week will be full of phone conversations, emails, exit interviews, settlements etc.

atleast i am leaving without jeopardizing any thing.

BMW Hydrogen car

BMW started giving its ads on tv for their first hydrogen powered car. its a 7 series and costly. so they are releasing to select customers on lease only.

when i searched for "bmw hydrogen" after watching the ad on tv, the first result was of a critic who bashed this car as "not as green as it seems". He seems to be right about what he said. but this is definetly a positive step away from fossil fuels. may be bmw has a plan to manufacture hydrogen and store it in liquid form using some method they are still working on.

you want to grow in a service company, there is not need for any technology. just try to get into one, and all you need is fill out those reports, XLS sheets and PPTs.

even though you really suck at technology, your clients hate you, you have no other choise or cannot do any other techno work since you donot have the fundamentals....you will be promoted again and again.

I dont want to be a manger, and i am not good at it. but if there is no position for technology enthusiasts..then create one for that stream also...all you have left in the company is small small managers roaming like piglets waiting for some nerd to resolve an issue. Where do you find a nerd if you dont want a nerd in the organization.

i dont seem to understand how "customer is God" is satisfied if all you deliver to the customer is reports and reports of work that none of you do.

well well well..after all the fun and boredom i have had in these many years in technology, i have decided to do an mba (yup in lowercase just incase i trash it soon as many other things). I ordered a gmat book from amazon. and it should come in couple of days.

its been many years i ve done math or done verbal. i did study for gre but didnt give it for some reasons. i hope my brain is as sharp as then if not better.

all these years other than techni books, i hvent touched any other novel or literature. i hope i can still make it.

i ve got 3 months till this project completes and i move on to another one. so 3 months of no work at home...only mat mat gmat.

i m writing this blog entry abt something i wanna do, and intend to continue writing about the progress.

tax returns & new gadgets

i normally pay excess taxes and when time comes for filing for tax returns, i claim for the most benefit. this way i am sure that i need not worry about taxes every month and i get a bulk amount from the returns.
also i normally buy something big with the returns. last year i bought my current lappy which is an excess in every sense..but i am loving it.
hmm...and with my roomies buying new laptops with vista and core 2 duo processors i feel a little intimidated. the only way not to feel like that is .............to buy an ibook and there is no competetion for it. Apple is coming out with Leopard OS. and it will be there for a long time.
- pros : cool for browsing, watching movies, pictures, easy to carry, doesnt crash, no virus. (apple ads made me aware of these things)- cons : costly, cannot use for work, freeware or hacks difficult to get hold of.
Leopard will come out after Oct 2007. and by the time i get my hands on it, it will be feb 08. i would hve got my next tax returns also. its a long wait. leopard be a good one.

after using tzedit.exe to update DST changes in windows 2000 environments donot forget to move to another timezone and revert back. If this is not done, windows time will change but if jre is present it will go to GMT+ timezone until the move is done.

The daylight savings procedure is helping US to save lot of energy, but I am sure companies are loosing atleast 1 hour productivity in the morning.

For the first time I have seen a queue infront of the restroom. We come an hour early but for our bodies to adapt - it surely will take time. Again in November when the change happens. I am sure some or other effect will be there.

and the new law changing DST to start from March is causing issues with systems. atleast it did not give headaches like the y2k. this was more simple and most of it was automated.

loosing Lenovo

Large companies who have been extremely loyal to IBM notebooks have moved on to other notebooks.

My guess - IBM sold off the notebook division to Lenovo which is chinese.

I was awestruck when current IBM laptops which work great have been replaced by Dell latitude (saying the lease expired). i could notice that only laptops were replaced, desktops coming in are still from IBM.

Dell Latitudes are recomended mostly for personal use, not for official use. Its known more as entertainment center than for its ruggedness.

Last week I went to Mel Gibson's Apocalypto. I did not even check the reviews, went on to the movie blindly with faith on Mel's directorial abilities.

He did not dissapoint me. Actually it was very good, except for the gory scenes of massaceres and killings.

the actors used, local language with english subtitles were ingenious.

I loved the way the hero prays for "no rain" to save his wife, kid and unborn kid. I did not feel bored for even 1 minute considering the length of the movie. it was 2.5 hrs movie.

there is no extreme heroism..the hero is just a normal person who fights a whole civilization to save his family.

my roomie bought a home theater last week..we both have been trying to make all the 5 speakers work together - without reading the manual. by the end of the week we were able to get 3 working. the last 2 are still mute.

snow storm

a big snow storm is predicted tonight. TV's Radios and internet have been howling about this from the past 1 week. the weather channels told snow will start at 3 Pm. Its 10:30 Pm and I just went out and came back without a sweater.

Lights Festival & Thanksgiving Parade

Last weekend I attended the Lights festival on the Magnificient Mile - Michigan Ave. It was awesome, especially the fireworks

Today me and my friend went over to downtown to watch the thanksgiving parade on state St. It was great, altough the crowd was much lesser than for the lights festival. The photos are from todays parade. I loved the Lawn Chair Dads. They were really funny in their superman type undies.

There were some bands from Florida, and many bands from columbia college. State St is smaller than Michicagn avenue and the crowd was less also all the shops were closed. For the lights festival, all the shops were open and the crowd atleast did window shopping.

On light festival we went into the Nokia store and browsed thru all the new N series phones. Also I got a light pendant from southwest airlines. A small kid sitting on her mothers shoulders played with me and my hair for more than 2 hours.

Its starting to get cold. but luckily these parade days we had good weather. mostly it was around 50F today.

Lexar Jumpdrive - USB drive

I ve been using a lexar Jumpdrive (256MB)JDA256 for the past 2 years. Last week I forgot it in my trousers and washed it & Dried it. Even extreme heat in the drier did not make this piece to stop working.

wow...all the data is intact and not even a scratch. Although it smells Bounce.
