I actually hope that the yellow background will make Adwords stand out in a good way for sites which appear in the natural search results. If so, people looking for information, may better be able to distinguish the sites that are most relevant from those that have merely paid to be listed for the key words!

This is an old trick that the newspapers have used to raise the cost of what they can charge advertisers in the classified. If it is true(survey says...) that 74% of people do not read, but only scan, then the yellow WILL cause people to stop (made you look!). This may actually be helpful to the searcher who is looking for the most salient info, but it is another way to get money from advertisers.
