November 15, 2007 - Celtic Cross and Chain is in the process of being sent to Gage Skrdla $teele.

Suzie Larson, a friend from my high school class of 1980, responded to my email looking for people to send a Cross and Chain to,with the following:

Bomb explodes near Green Zone

Baghdad - A roadside bomb has exploded next to a US military patrol near Baghdad’s Green Zone early on Wednesday, killing one military and wounding four.

Series of events:
Wednesday, All times are local
0617 - Traci and Bart received the phone call that identified Gage as one ofthe wounded soldiers.
0900 - Traci and Bart received a phone call from the Doctors and nursing staff in Baghdad explaining Gages injuries and the plan to get him out of Iraq. Gage lost sight in both eyes and shrapnel from the bomb is throughout his body.
1000 - The Commander of Gages unit calls from Iraq and explains in brief what happened.
1200 - Doctor and nursing staff call from Iraq and place Gage on the phone. His voice is frantic and confused and he stated, “Mom I can’s see.” In his next breathe, Gage explains his Lt was killed and breaks down in sorrow.
2200 - Gages nurse from Iraq calls and states, “Gage is a very considerate and thoughtful young man.” She also recommends a couple of different books on CD and tells us that Gage is on the way to Landstuhl, Germany.
Thursday
We would receive updates from the US Army on his condition and movements. We were able to speak with Gage and his spirits and understand of what happened were much better.
On Friday the US Army called with family invitations orders to Walter ReedArmy Hospital to visit Gage. We will be departing for Washington DC on Saturday Morning and staying until about Sunday November 25, 2007.
The Doctors will be trying to save the eye with the least amount of damage. We will keep you posted.
The fact that we will be with Gage for Thanksgiving and that the Green Bay Packers are playing football that same day should make this a very memorable turkey day.

San Antonio Scottish Clan Gathering and Highland Games this weekend!

For years, San Antonio Scottish culture enthusiasts have driven many miles to hear the music, see the athletics and taste the food of Scotland in Texas.

After the 1997 Gathering of the Clans in Salado, a group of San Antonians decided to work toward hosting an annual event in San Antonio. Articles of Incorporation were drawn up and submitted to the Texas Secretary of State not long after the association formed.

The first meeting was held in January, 1998. At this point the organization boasted a membership roster of 16 people and five clan groups. After bylaws were drafted the group set about planning the first games, which were held at the Retama Polo Grounds in April 1999.

After three years at Retama, the games moved to the Helotes Festival Grounds, a very popular decision, according to all who attended. Join us for our seventh annual games in 2005.

Membership in the San Antonio Highland Games Association is open to anyone with an interest in Scottish heritage and culture.

Celtic Symbol - Triskele - Celtic Goddess - My Celtic Treasures

The Triskele is thought to be one of the earliest Celtic Symbols. The Triskele was discovered in stone carvings in Ireland which date back some 3000 years or so. It is believed the original meaning of the Triskele represents a Celtic Goddess, the "Mother Goddess of the Celts". The Mother Goddess is the guardian of the hearth, the land and plenty.

For the Druids, it is the Three-fold Sister Goddess: Folta, Eiru, Banba.

For the Wiccan, it is the Three-fold Mother Goddess: Maiden, Mother, Crone.

CELTIC CROSS

The Celtic Cross had it's evolution in the British Isles, with it's earliest form dating to approximately the ninth century and appearing mostly in Ireland. This early version is called a recumbent cross-slab, and they lied flat rather than standing upright. Eventually these made their way into an upright position (now called erect cross-slabs), and acquired a slightly rounded top. Both versions were often decorated with key patterns, interlaced knotwork, and spirals.

The Celtic Cross then underwent another change. Extraneous rock was carved away from the head of the slab, leaving the rock with the outlined shape of a tall cross, usually on a wider base. Because the cross form was in effect "freed" from the rock now, these types of crosses were commonly called erect free-standing crosses. From these, the arms of the cross eventually became extended beyond the ring of the cross, and the inner quadrants between the rings and the arms were cut away or recessed from the rest of the cross design. The free-standing crosses were elaborately made, and often composed of several pieces of stone. A large cross could have been made of up to four pieces of stone (the base, the shaft, the head, and the upper cross arm), held together by mortise and tenon joints carved into the stone.

An Irish legend tells how St. Patrick created the first Celtic Cross by drawing a circle over a Latin cross to incorporate a pagan moon goddess symbol. For an Irish Catholic, the circle in the Celtic Cross may be a symbol of eternity and the endlessness of God's love. It can even represent a halo emanating from Christ.

The Celtic Cross and Irish cross shape itself has been widely used by many ancient peoples, long before the arrival of Christianity. Its four arms were perfect for denoting the four elements, the four directions of the compass, and the four parts of man - mind, body, soul and heart. The addition of the ring around the cross has had many explanations, everything from sun worship and symbolism, to creating a shape with the cross that was well contained and aesthetically pleasing.

Cernunnos - Celtic God - Celtic Symbol

Cernunnos is the mysterious horned deity worshipped by Iron age Celts across Europe until the end of the first century. Very little is known about Cernunnos except his name and his image, which appears on numerous stonecarvings and other artifacts throughout Europe. He appears crowned with stag's antlers, is often seated in a meditative position, and is almost always depicted with images of wild animals.

His Celtic name is unknown, although he may be associated with Derg Corra, the early Celtic "Man in the Tree." Cernunnos is a Roman name meaning "horned one." He is often associated with Herne the hunter, a character of British folk myth, and the "Green man" of European architecture. Roman invaders associated Cernunnos with the god Mercury. He is later associated with "Herne the hunter," of European legend, and his appearance was eventually adapted as the Christian Devil's.

The image which appears above is derived from the "Gundestrup Cauldron," a ritual object of unknown use discovered in pieces in a peat bog in Denmark.

This Triquetra or Trinity Celtic Knotwork Symbol dates back some 3000 years or so. There have been many meanings for this symbol throughout the ages. It is thought by some, the original thought was representing a Celtic Goddess. The three points of the Triquetra are Mind, Body and Spirit, which is one's soul. A busy season of Irish Festivals, Scottish Clan Gatherings, Celtic Festivals and more is under way for My Celtic Treasures. It began two weekends ago at the North Texas Irish Festival, followed by an arts & craft show in Wichita this past weekend. The fun has begun!

This weekend, March 17-19, we'll be in Des Moines at the Flower Lawn and Garden show.

The schedule for the rest of the year is being planned now. Included are the Kansas City Irish Festival (labor day weekend), Weston Irish Festival, Dayton Irish Festival, Toledo Irish Festival, Arcadia Valley Highland Games, Decatur Celebration, Long's Peak Scottish and Irish Festival (Estes Park), Texas Scottish Festival and many many more.

Next weekend, July 15,16,17, we'll be at the Toledo Irish Festival. This will be our second year running. Last year I met the infamous "Shreck", or "Chocolate Bishop", to some, of the Museum Replica Store. Talk about cool! We'll be meeting up with him again at the Long's Peak Scottish Festival at Estes Park in September the week after the awesome Kansas City Irish Festival. See you there!
