Glass Cleaning

We have at Trade Windows for a while been receiving requests for advice on how to maintain and keep your double glazed windows and doors in optimal condition.

Thats why we have included this FREE GUIDE in this months newsletter packed with the latest advice and tips.

With double glazing products as with any equipment, to obtain complete satisfaction it is advisable to carry out the simplest of regular maintenance.

As our policy is one of continuous improvement in products, methods and materials, changes in specification may be made from time to time without prior notice.

Glass Cleaning

Float glass , used in most double glazed units, is easily scratched and it is therefore recommended that hand jewellery is removed prior to cleaning.

Any proprietary household cleaner may be used with a soft cloth and it is recommended that heavy external grime be initially removed with a solution of soap and water.

Laminated glass, or glass containing Georgian bars, is cleaned in exactly the same manner.

Condensation in new windows

I have been asked on a number of ocassions about condensation around new double glazing it is mainly due to the temperature on the outside of the house being significantly different to the inside similar to what you would find in a new car.
The main suggestion I would make is to ensure that there is adequate air circulating around the house ie via trickle vents installed on the new windows or opening windows slightly ajar once a day (ensure that there are safety hinges on open windows.

It basically describes the advantages and disadvantages that were found with windows from 2004.

I am glad to report that many of the issues ie brittle windows etc have long been ironed out by the industry and many of the enhancements in the lasttwo years mean that double glazed windows are much much more politically correct.

Badger Or Bust

I dont know how many people watched badger or bust about the conservatory company in Bradford but I do feel it has shed some light on the failures in the double glazing industries problems at the moment.

Obviously there are people who have been in the industry a while but if this is what the behaviour of sales staff in our industry is coming to it goes a long way to explain the sink we are feeling at the moment.

If there is one lesoon we can learn from this program in our industry is we have to be more proactive in educating our customers about product offerings and our sales approach has to be genuine and not just an opportunity as the public sometimes feels just to make a quick buck.

Planning Permission For Your Conservatory

Generally if you live in a semi detached or detached properted a conservatory with a volume total of 70M3 is allowed how ever if it is larger planning is required. If you live in a terraced or end of terrace only 50m3 is allowed.

The problems that people often encounter when they build a conservatory with out planning is they are fined or asked to demolish the conservatory. With the introduction of home information packs it is now a required to provide documentary evidence of where yor conservatory planning was obtained via a letter from your local council.

St Helens Glass Liquidation

The double glazing industry over the last few years has seen a phenomenal increase in the number of companies going bust.

The latest company which has gone into liquidation is a merseyside company st helens glass. It has been reported in publications and through tv shows like watchdog that the company has been providing high interest finance agreements and bad service.

The reason why many of these companies go into liquidation is the company culture is not uniform across the whole company by which I mean the interests of the company are not in the hearts of all of the employees.

That is why our company Trade Windows tries to enhance employee satisfaction by rewarding all employees from the service staff to the installers for work well done.

I cannot comment on st Helens Glass how ever I feel that if our industry is to recover then the customers should always with out comprimise be put first.

A Rated Double Glazed Windows

We are proud to announce we now supply an 'A' rated window in conjunction with our partner companies.

What this means is we can supply a window (at extra cost) that differs from our normal window by way of providing premium energy saving features.

The window when teamed with pilkington 'K' glass and argon gas will cut energy bills drastically more than existing window profiles out there. There is minimal air leakage and solar heat is saved iin the home allowing dramatic reductions in heating bills.

When HIP packs which are made compulsory on June 1st in the UK 'A' rated windows will help your property sell faster than other people who are selling similar houses in your area.

What is fensa

FENSA was set up by the Glass and Glazing Federation because from 1st April 2002 all replacement glazing in houses comes under building regulations. The main aim being to ensure that all replacement windows and doors comply to modern insulation standards to save energy and not to ensure good quality work!

As may guess from what FENSA means the building officers don't check every piece of work that a glazing company does. To obtain a FENSA registration a small sample of work by an installer is checked by the a FENSA appointed inspector.

Once an installer is FENSA registered they can certify that the work they have completed is up to Building Regulation standards.

Any installation done by a firm which is not registered to self-certify, or done as a DIY project by a householder, will need full local authority approval under the Building Regulations. Local authorities will know of all the approved installers in their areas and will be able to identify unauthorized work very easily. You should note that you, as the house owner, are ultimately responsible for ensuring the work complies with the Building Regulations.

Before you sign a contract to buy replacement glazing, be sure to ask whether the installer is able to self-certify. If not, either they, or you, will need to make an application to your local authority for approval under the Building Regulations and pay the relevant charges.

To summarize a FENSA registered company is useful if your conservatory does need to comply with building regulations as it will mean that they will be able to certify that any work done on your home is up to the standard. But, it does not guarantee good quality or timely work.
