Conference Announcement: Cambodia and World History/World History and Cambodia, January 3-4, 2010, Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The second "Cambodia and World History/World History and Cambodia" conference will be hosted by Pannasastra University of Cambodia in Phnom Penh, January 3-4, 2010. The first symposium, held in January 2009, attracted scholars from Britain, Thailand, and the United States who engaged in lively discussions with their counterparts at Pannasastra University and the Royal University of Cambodia.

This year's program will similarly be devoted to generating dialog among scholars within and outside of Cambodia about Cambodia's place in World History. It also seeks to stimulate discussion of world history methodology and those world history processes that have application to the Cambodian past. Further, it will examine the possible role world history can play in framing pre- and post-conflict Cambodian history and thus aid in the development of Cambodia's educational establishment at all levels of instruction.

Among the topics that may be addressed at the symposium are: the nature of world history; the processes of indigenization; localization, and syncretism in Cambodian history; the decline and fall of classical societies; Diaspora and gender studies; the colonial experience; nationalism; post-conflict studies; trade, religion and culture in Cambodia, regional questions in global perspective; borderlands; regionalism and regional diplomatic relations; investment, tourism and resource management issues; the environment; comparative genocide; and models for World History and global studies in Cambodia both in terms of scholarship and instruction. These topics are examples only and should not be taken to exclude proposals on other topics.

A working dinner meeting will be held on Sunday, January 3,, with an all-day conference on Monday, January 4, which will follow an all-plenary roundtable format, with all participants attending consecutive one hour-long sessions held throughout the day (with a break for lunch), followed by a working farewell dinner. The sessions will be organized around topically grouped presentations limited to 10-15 minutes each to encourage discussion. It is not expected that formal papers will be read. These presentations can, however, form the basis for publication in a contemplated volume or as part of a forum or individual articles in the journal World History Connected.

The symposium is sponsored by Teachers Across Borders, Inc. (TAB), a non-profit international educational organization. The conference serves as the first of a series of TAB annual activities in Cambodia designed to further Cambodia's national educational goals.

TAB programs are open to all. There is no registration fee and it is not necessary to make a presentation to participate in this dialog. There is, however, no honorarium for travel or housing.

Individual presentations as well as an entire panel may be submitted for inclusion in the program. Please send a brief vita with full contact information and a brief abstract to the program chair. Those who plan to attend the symposium, but not make a presentation, should inform the program chair of their plans for logistical purposes (room seating, etc.).

Nicolas Axelrod - Children of Cambodia

Nicolas Axelrod settled in Cambodia in 2008 to work as a freelance
photographer. Amazed by the beauty of Khmer culture and way of life,
he was equally drawn to the changes and growth that we can witness in
Cambodia's everyday life.

Intrigued by these transformations, his personal work has been
directed at documenting Cambodia's evolution. As part of this process
he has focused his photography on the new generation of Khmers,
concentrating on those who have been left behind in these times of
rapid change. Documenting both rural and urban youth as they work,
live, learn and play.

Nicolas' show 'Children of Cambodia' was recently displayed in
Lausanne, Switzerland, at Gallery Black and White. This will be the
first time this series is exhibited in Cambodia.

VANISHED - 90 min (english subtitles): Set in the heart of contemporary Phnom Penh, Vanished tells the nerve-wracking story of radio show presenter Maly (played by stunning newcomer, actress Saray Sakana) who deals with young Cambodian's personal problems on a controversial nightly phone-in show. In quick succession, her co-host and producer are found dead. Maly is terrified her own life is in danger, even under police protection. As the threats mount and she feels increasingly at her wits' end, the question for her and the audience is will she crack before the murderer is caught?

His story is a story of hardship. But it is also a story of hope. WATERBOY - 15 min: The story of how a boy gets the strength and the courage to work in a water purification company and away from his family. A BOY AT THE BORDER - 14 min. ... THE CHANGING AKHA (Laos) - 16 min: A film about how the lives of the Akha tribe is changing because of modernization and how despite these changes, the Akha is trying to hold on to their traditions. HUMAN ZOO (Myanmar) - 19 min: The women of the Padaung, a Myanmar tribe wear brass coils on their neck. This practice turns them into an interesting attraction for tourists. Director Ko Ko Gyi captures the delicate beauty of these women, their changed lifestyles and their suffering as media and tourism turn their home into a 'human zoo.'MY POSITIVE LIFE (Myanmar) - 20 min. ... MY DEAR ENEMY (Thailand) - 20 min - Directed by: Manussa Vorasingha: A short film about two grade school boys who love to tease and taunt each other until they both realize that nothing good will come out of it. SLEEPING BEAUTY (Thailand) - 9 min - Directed by: Manussa Vorasingha: Shot using a cellular phone, this is a true story about the last few days of a dying woman in a hospital. Using the tale of Sleeping Beauty in the narration, the film maker is able to show the contrast between reality and the fairy tale. MATSII (Thailand) - 19 min - Directed by: Sineenadh Keitparapai: A film about the struggles of a young mother who just wants to leave her children behind and its parallelism to the story of Matsii, the wife of Prince Wetsadon who was said to be Buddha who gave her children away so she can concentrate on taking care of her husband. MIRACLE OF LOVE (China) - 14 min: A research conducted in Thailand through a project of the United Nations Funds resulted in development of a drug that will reduce mother-to-childe transmission of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). This film shows a shining example of how international cooperation and sharing of knowledge can not only improve but save lives as well. GREENMEADOW (Vietnam) - 40 min - With the support of the My Life My View Project, seven children: Hien, Tam, Ha, Thao, Bac, Nhung and Tuyet filmed the daily lives of the 20 families in their floating village on the Red River in Ngoc Thuy ward of Gia Lim District, Hanoi. This story takes the audience to the world of children and allows them to experience life through their eyes.

Photo Phnom Penh Festival presents chinese photographer Luo Dan

Exhibition Opening on Thursday, December 3rd at 7:00pm

Born in 1968. Lives and Works at Chengdu in China. Luo Dan was granted a diploma in 1992 from the Institute of Fine Arts in Sichuan, China. He made a career of photojournalism from 1997 to 2005. Since 2006, he has been working as a freelance photographer in China.

He has participated in numerous exhibitions and festivals such as the San Francisco Photographic Art Exposition (2006), Photoquai 07 (France, 2007), and Lianzhou International Photo Festival (China, 2006 and 2008/Artist of the year/Gold Award). This year, he presented a solo exhibition: China, on the Road at Tomo Art Center in Beijing and in the Taiss Art Gallery in Paris.

Social Construction and Social Production of Abortion. Insights from Cambodia.

In Cambodia, despite the implementation of governmental reproductive health care activities since 1994, contraception prevalence rate remains very low. Many women undergo chemical or mechanical abortion. Indeed, abortion has been legalized in Cambodia in 1997; however there is a lack of awareness regarding the legality of abortion and a lack of provision of safe abortion services. Unsafe abortion remains one of the most common causes of maternal death. Thus, we may wonder why, how and to which extends cultural values, gender norms, social organization of care and political will to tackle the problem head-on as well as individual experiences and attitudes regarding unwanted pregnancies shape abortion practices. We will investigate those issues in cross-crossing various perspectives levels. Firstly, we will give some historical elements related to abortion legalization and policies in Cambodia. Secondly, we will analyze how social organization of care shapes legal and illegal abortion practices. Thirdly, we will describe determining factors that lead women to seek abortion. Finally, we will investigate how abortion event makes sense in their reproductive lives. Thus, our findings may raise relevant issues for public health perspective, provide mirrored views on Cambodian Contemporary Society as well as bring various theoretical insights for anthropology.

Pascale Hancart Petitet is an anthropologist, research fellow at the Centre de Recherche Cultures, Santé, Societies (CReCSS), Universite Paul Cézanne, Aix-Marseille III, France. Previously, she has been involved during eight years in humanitarian projects (in Mauritania, Angola, Pakistan and Afghanistan) mostly focused on maternal and child health issues. Her works and publications mainly concern the social construction of birth practices at the time of AIDS in India including the volume Maternités en Inde du Sud (2008), issued from her PhD, and various chapter related to birth in Himalaya, Mother to child transmission of HIV, Birth rites, and the knowledge and practices of traditional birth attendants in Southern India. Since january 2008, her research focus onpolitics of reproduction in Cambodia.

Don't miss this great documentary filmed in High Definition! IRIS CHANG
(2007, 135 min) by US filmmakers William Spahic and Anne Pick is about a
young woman's journey to bring one of the darkest chapters of history to
light. In 1937, the invading Japanese army murdered over 200,000 and raped
tens of thousands of Chinese. In 1997, American-Chinese writer Iris Chang
authored and published "The Rape of Nanking - The Forgotten Holocaust of
World War II" based on her parents' firsthand experiences and profound
research. Until her death due to suicide in 2004, Iris was always an
unflinching fighter for justice, truth and human rights.

Filmmakers Ed Pincus and Lucia Small embark on a sixty-day road trip through
the USA into the "Katrina" devastation zone to meet evacuees. When the film
opens, it is six months since Katrina hit New Orleans and causing the
largest internal migration in American history. Along the way they witness
the loss, dignity, perseverance and humor of people who have become exiles
in their own country. The breakdown of trust between a government and its
citizens, the influence of race, class, and gender form the backdrop for

IMPRESSIVE CROSSOVER OF CINEMA & STAGE
New Queer Cinema @ Meta House, recommended by film expert and
"Q-Film-Festival"-maker John Badalu: Beautifully composed and shot in sultry
colours, A MOMENT IN JUNE is steeped in the nostalgia of memory and of '70s
Thailand. Director O Nathaporn draws on his theater experience to devise an
impressive crossover of cinema and stage through a play-within-a-film (2008,
106mins). Set in 1999, it focuses on a theater director who's staging a play
about a love triangle that's set in 1972 in Bangkok. At the same time, he's
going through a breakup with his boyfriend. Reality and the stage play, and
the time between the decades artfully fold into each other.

IN MEMORY OF JOHN F. KENNEDY: "EXECUTIVE ACTION"
Today, 36 years ago, U.S. President John F. Kennedy was murdered. EXECUTIVE
ACTION (91mins) is an excellent 1973 feature film about his assassination,
written by Dalton Trumbo, Donald Freed and Mark Lane. Despite many
similarities with the plotline of Oliver Stone's "JFK", it presents a far
more direct and unemotional account of the Kennedy assassination than
Stone's film. The film was made in an almost documentary style, with the
presence of two big Hollywood names, Robert Ryan and Burt Lancaster. As a
cinematic appetizer we are also screening "Nov. 22 1963: In Search of
Answers" featuring interviews with cast and crew of this film.

Please be our guest for tonite's first screening of "LOST CHILDREN"
(Tuesday, 7PM) – the award-winning documentary about child soldiers in
Uganda. Filmmakers Ali Samadi Ahadi and Oliver Stoltz observe children who
escaped the bush camps of Ugandan rebels to document what happens when they
try to reintegrate into their clans. Because both directors were confronted
with war during their childhoods, they have purposely chosen to tell the
story from a child's perspective (2005, 98mins).

Also screening: "ON THE MOVE" by Cambodian media students Tiep Seiha and
Meas Roth documents a trip to Germany and the Netherlands, where Khmer
students learn about the German genocide.

* Friday, 7 PM, we are proud to screen "WHO MOVES PHNOM PENH?": Media

* Saturday, 7 PM, the MESSENGER BAND presents "LAND LOST, CULTURE LOST".
Former garment factory workers are singing "a-capella" about pressing social
issues. Tonight's live performance, music videos (featuring the blind Chapei
star Kong Nai) and Q&A with the artists is followed by the innovative
community video project "LAND LOST CULTURE LOST". The film tells the story
of a land dispute in Ratanakkiri though the eyes of ethnic Jarai villagers
from one of Cambodia's remotest areas. It's shot by the villagers and
screened in the original version with English subtitles.

* On Sunday, 6 PM, we are hosting a SPECIAL CHARITY ART AUCTION with
original works by German artist Herbert Mueller. The revenues will support a
project for children in Kandal province and Cambodian students from the
faculty of Medicine.

The auction is followed by the film "KANDAHAR" (2001, 82 min). It serves as
a timely memorial to the brutality of the Taliban regime. When a woman
receives a letter from her sister in Afghanistan which makes her think that
she is going to kill herself, she sets off on a perilous journey to the
country in search of her sibling.

Kon Khmer Koun Khmer presents: Golden Reawakening Part 2

Exhibition of photos and drawings of the movie theatres in Phnom Penh in
the 70s

At Sasa Gallery (7 Street 360), November 6th-18th 2009

In 1975, there were at least 30 movie theatres in Phnom Penh. Today, just
one of them still shows films: Lux Theatre.

The photographer group "Stiev Selapak" (Rebel Arts) has photographed the
places where those movie theatres were located at that time, trying to
find the right angle and light to make those old theatres reappearing
behind the image.

Because many photos of the 70's movie theatres are not available, we
worked with a group of artists to create drawings of several movie
theatres based on the meticulous description of one remarkable witness of
that era, Mr. Chour Sokhen.

We can't guarantee that those drawings reflect the exact reality of that
time – indeed we are sure that they don't. Let see them as a proposal of
what they could have looked like, or as an act of "re-appropriation" from
young Cambodian artists of these missing images.

We divided the space into the main areas in which were located the
theatres at that time: most of the theatres were in the Northeast of Phnom
Penh, few were in the West, others in the South, and we focused on three
of the most popular ones: Hemakcheat, Phnom Pich and Capitol.

Opening today at 6pm at Sasa Gallery, 7 Street 360 (near Baitong Restaurant).

and publisher of the tourism magazine âœThe Cambodian Sceneâ. Nhean has
been involved in English-language marketing and media for many years and
has cut his teeth on various high-grade local publications before
venturing out on his own. In 2007 he was invited to the World Press Photo
Exhibition in Taipei.

The opening of his first Cambodian exhibition âœMYSTERIOUS SCENERYâ in
the mezzanine room is followed by the 7PM screening of two documentaries
about the art of photography: âœPRISONER OF AGEâ and âœHEROINESâ by

About the movie: Prince Adit lives alone in Siem Reap. Because of his malaria, he is nursed by a young girl whose name is Sopheap. Indian Princess Maya Maharani, who was invited to Cambodian Independence Day, visits the prince at Angkor. The prince accompanies her to visit Angkor temples and they recall the first time they met. The lonely prince and the widowed princess can talk about their love freely without hesitation. But Miss Sopheap steals the prince’s heart...

Festival: Golden Reawakening

1960's Cambodian film festival and exhibition
17-25 october - Free entrance

From 1960 to 1975, Cambodian film studios produced more than 350 films and there were about 30 movie theatres in Phnom Penh. Today, only 33 films remain available. Lux Theatre is the last surviving movie theatre. Only a few directors and film stars survived the Khmer Rouge Regime.

This event will introduce the golden era of Cambodian films through biographies, photos and posters of the greatest actors, filmmakers and films. This special event serves as a link between generations and brings together a number of surviving directors and film stars from 1960 to 1975 with many talented young artists from today’s art scene. More than 20 Cambodian artists have created paintings, photographs, drawings and an architectural model based on fragmented memories and limited documentation.

During the festival, 11 films from this golden period will be screened with commentaries from legendary filmmakers Ly Bun Yim, Yvon Hem and Ly You Sreang and the legendary film star Dy Saveth. The organizers are honored to receive permission from HM King-Father Norodom Sihanouk to screen his film “Twilight” (1968) which HM has chosen for the festival. The 11 films include masterpieces “Twelve sisters” by Ly Bun Yim and “The Snake Man” by Tea Lim Koun (who many of us have lost touch with and we have discovered him alive in Canada three weeks ago).

Kon Khmer Koun Khmer recently produced “The Twin Diamonds” screened at Lux cinema earlier this month, and is led by Davy Chou, a young French filmmaker whose grandfather, Van Chann, was one of the greatest film producers in Cambodia in the 1960s.

The exhibition will open every day at 3:00 PM and the films (free entrance) will be screened at 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Special guests Mr. Ly Bun Yim and Mrs. Dy Saveth will attend the opening.

Exhibition - Golden Reawakening - 60s and 70s Cambodian Films @ Chinese House

Dear all:

We are pleased to invite you to "Golden Reawakening" - an exhibition celebrating the golden era of Cambodian films (1960s and 1970s) to be held at the Chinese House in Phnom Penh. The exhibition will feature reproductions of movie posters, photos, biographies, film screenings and a chance to meet some of the stars and film directors.

Opening night is Saturday, October 16, 2009, 6 pm. The exhibition is curated by Davy Chou, the grandson of one of the most famous film producers of the 1960s named Van Chann.
