Three cups of coffee daily helps retain memory - TRUE (especially if you're a woman)
Coffee and exercise may prevent skin cancer - MAYBE (but it makes sense, so I'm claiming it to be true.)
Coffee is a potent diuretic - FALSE (so drink as much as you want)
Energy drinks have more caffeine than coffee - FALSE (plus, coffee's better tasting anyway... have you tried some of those energy drinks? Yucck!)
Coffee can enhance your workout - TRUE (and I still see Gatorade and water bottles at the gym!)

Andiamo Coffee Donates Coffee to Las Vegas Charity Golf Event Benefiting the Children's Miracle Network

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007 was a great day for the Children's Miracle Network and Las Vegas area golfers alike. RE/MAX teamed up with the non-profit organization to organize a charity golf outing at the Siena Golf Club with American Home Mortgage sponsoring the event. Over 130 golfers teed it up for the Children's Miracle Network, including Andiamo Coffee who provided coffee packs in the goodie bags each participant received at the beginning of the day.

The Children's Miracle Network is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping kids by raising funds for 170 children's hospitals across North America. The hospitals affiliated with the group help 17 million kids with cancer, birth defects, pediatric AIDS, accident trauma, and every affliction imaginable. These non-profit hospitals are there 24/7 to provide state-of-the-art care, cutting-edge research and community outreach programs that benefit all children.

The golfing itself went off without a hitch, as 33 foursomes took the course in shotgun format where the winning team shot a 56 for the championship. There were contests for longest drive and closest to the pin for both men and women. RE/MAX volunteers staffed each "award hole" and all did a great job. It was at the lunch afterwards that things really got interesting as a number of companies and groups donated items for the raffle and silent auction - and valuable items at that! Complimentary rounds of golf, sets of golf clubs, drivers, event tickets, golf clothing, paintings, etc. all were part of the giveaways.

Andiamo Coffee's own Ron Costa won the chance to putt for a $2,500 prize. One putt, 60 feet away, but the pressure was too much as his putt went way off target left. Said Mr. Costa:

"Charities and coffee fundraisers have always been a central focus to the foundation of our company. Besides donating the coffee packs for the event, we wanted to do something more for the Children's Miracle Network, so from now until August, Andiamo Coffee will donate 15% of all online coffee orders over $20 to the Children's Miracle Network using coupon code "CMN" at checkout. Andiamo Coffee "wows" those in attendance once again with their best gourmet coffee and rooibos tea selections.

On Monday, April 16th, 2007 Andiamo Coffee joined 39 other local food & drink exhibitors in showcasing their companies to hundreds of people in attendance for the 5th annual Queens Taste of the World fundraising event. Tony Tantillo, the Food Editor and expert from CBS 2 served as the taste-master of the event and joined the crowd in sampling food and drink from some of the best establishments Queens, New York has to offer.

Held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, the evening couldn't have been more successful for Andiamo Coffee. With a display featuring gourmet coffee and teas, the Andiamo Coffee booth proved to be a very popular destination, as people who paid $85 each to attend the event lined up 3 deep for a taste of Andiamo Coffee's Kenya AA, House Decaf, and their unique and wonderfully aromatic Mandarin Orange Rooibos Tea.

During the course of the event, those in attendance were asked to vote for their favorites in 5 categories: best appetizer, best entree, best dessert, best beverage (alcohol), and best beverage (non-alcoholic). In what the Discover Queens website described as "upsets", Andiamo Coffee capped off a tremendous evening by winning the Best Beverage (non-alcoholic) Award.

The Mayonnaise Jar and 2 Cups of Coffee

When things in your lives seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous "yes."

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things--your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions--and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.

The sand is everything else--the small stuff. "If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

"Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first --the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked.

It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend"

Day for Dreams Event Supports Children With Cancer

Andiamo Coffee supports "A Day For Dreams", a not-for-profit organization founded with the purpose of bringing fun to kids with cancer and other life-threatening diseases and to help raise childhood cancer awareness.

Formed under the Jacob Shank Foundation founded by Susan McKay-Bohner, they will be hosting an event in conjunction with the Ronald McDonald House of Manhattan and Long Island on Saturday, August 5th, 2006 called "A Day at the Beach" where approximately 20 - 25 children and their families will be treated to a fun-filled day.

However, they need help raising approximately $5500 to make this event a reality. All donations are tax deductable and will be used strictly for the event with no administrative fees as all labor and service are donated. Andiamo Coffee will be contributing desserts for the event.

Andiamo Coffee Caters BBQ Picnic Honoring War Veterans

On Sunday, July 9th, 2006, Andiamo Coffee catered a picnic dedicated to war Veterans at Bruno Longo Field in Yonkers, New York, cooking up delicious hamburgers, hotdogs, and all the other ingredients that make a barbeque so much fun. See slideshow

So many people and organizations contributed to the day's success, including the fire department who provided the drinks, various bands who entertained at the event, the gorgeous and talented girls of the USO who belted out tune after tune as the crowd sang along to the classics, and of course Wellcare Inc., who sponsored and organized the entire event.

Andiamo not only barbequed the food in the "Pit Area", but also served it all with smiling faces as all in attendance seemed to really enjoy both the food and the atmosphere. And with an expected crowd of over 800 people, the weather cooperated as well as you couldn't have asked for a nicer day.

Andiamo Coffee's proud of our Veterans and continues their dedication to charitable causes. We were incredibly happy and honored to work this event. Great food... great people.. great day... and a great result in the soccer world with Italy winning the World Cup!

Study Shows Drinking Coffee Cuts Alcohol's Harmful Effects

Next time you're out at your favorite watering hole, remember the latest findings by Dr. Arthur Klatsky of the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, California, which say that coffee may counteract alcohol’s poisonous effects on the liver and help prevent cirrhosis.

In a study of more than 125,000 people, one cup of coffee per day cut the risk of alcoholic cirrhosis by 20 percent. Four cups per day reduced the risk by 80 percent. The coffee effect held true for women and men of various ethnic backgrounds. The participants ranged from teetotalers, who made up 12 percent of the total, to heavy drinkers, who made up 8 percent. The researchers calculated the risk reductions rate for the whole group, not just the drinkers.

The findings, published in Monday’s Archives of Internal Medicine, build on reports that coffee also may reduce the risk of liver cancer. The same study found coffee drinkers had healthier results on blood tests used to measure liver function, whether or not they were heavy alcohol users. But coffee’s effect on reducing liver enzymes in the blood was more apparent among the heavy drinkers in the study.

While the best way to avoid alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver is probably just cut down on your alcohol drinking, it's still nice to know that cup of java from Andiamo Coffee that tastes so good, is actually doing something good for you at the same time.

On April 26th, Andiamo Coffee joined several other high-profile culinary exhibitors at the fourth annual Queens Taste of the World event held at the Douglaston Manor in Douglaston, New York in an evening that couldn't have been more successful. Andiamo bakers went all out, creating a number of masterfully sculptured pieces of art that many in attendance raved about. From the cake baked to the exact image and likeness of real life Andiamo Coffee coffee bags to the chocolate cappuccino cups, Andiamo certainly put on a show. Andiamo Coffee's Catering for Leeza's Place a Huge Success

Andiamo Coffee recently provided catering services to Leeza's Place at the Park Slope Geriatric Day Center. In 2002, Leeza Gibbons founded the Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation to assist caregivers and their loved ones dealing with memory disorders and to make sure families around the country would never have to face what her family experienced when the diagnosis was made in Leeza's family.

Andiamo Coffee provided them with healthy lunch catering on Saturday, April 8, 2006 which included low-fat baked chicken cutlets, whole grain wild rice, mixed field green salad tossed with carrots, celery, sliced tomatoes, red peppers, and pitted olives as well as all the stands, pans and sternos.

In addition, Andiamo provided that extra little something which sets our catering services apart from anyone else. And it didn't go unnoticed. Besides an official letter of thanks (read it here), here's a handwritten letter we received from Cathy Warburton, a Leeza Care Advocate and an organizer of the event:

Queens Centers for Progress is made up of people working together to promote the independence of individuals with developmental disabilities. As I'm sure you are aware, Andiamo Coffee has been a member of the Health & Business Alliance (HBA) since it's inception in 2004. The HBA is an action-oriented professional association that pools resources from the business, not-for-profit, and healthcare communities to create projects and educational events that enhance services and improve business practices, while benefiting the borough of Queens and adjacent counties.

As part of the HBA "family", we like to mention noteworthy achievements and accolades from other members of the group. As such, congratulations goes to Vicki Ellner who will be honored Thursday, March 23rd at Terrace on the Park at the 4th Annual Top 10 Queens Women in Business Awards. The date is approaching quickly, so make sure you contact us or Janine Regosin for tickets or further information.

Also, HBA member Anita Mancini (another Andiamo Coffee lover I might add) was selected by the Queens Borough President's Office to be honored as a top award winner at the Annual Social Worker's Awards and Reception on Friday, March 24th from 2-4pm at the Jamaica Library on Parsons Blvd. That is a huge honor!

The best way to become successful is network with successful people. HBA members continue to be honored and recognized in their respective industries thereby providing great value to the organization. Andiamo Coffee Caters Wine Tasting / Networking Event at NYC Art Gallery

On February 9th, 2006, Andiamo Coffee had the pleasure of catering a wine tasting/networking event for the New York Staffing Association (NYSA) held at the Multiple Impressions Art Gallery located at 128 Spring Street in New York City, an Art Oasis. Many staffing companies who attended had an opportunity to sample various wines from South Africa. The big hit of the evening, besides the Andiamo Coffee gourmet Italian spread, was the Chardonnay and Shiraz offered.

A Glossary of Coffee Terms

By studying the terms below, you'll be an instant expert at your holiday party when the conversation unvariably turns to gourmet coffee:

Acidity: is a pleasant quality that points out a coffee's flavor and provides a liveliness, sparkle, or snap to the drink. The acidity of a coffee may be assessed as lively, moderate, flat, or dull.
Aged: is a coffee bean that's been stored for at least a year or more before roasting. The coffee bean has then lost it's acidic coffee characteristics, becoming richly sweet and heavily bodied.
Aftertaste: is the sensation of brewed coffee vapors, ranging from carbon to chocolate and spicy to turpentine as they are released from the residue remaining in the mouth after swallowing.
Alkaline: is a clawing sensation at the back of the tongue caused by alkaline and phenolic compounds that have bitter but not necessarily displeasing tastes; characteristic of dark roasted coffees and some Indonesian coffees.
Aroma: is an odor or fragrance of brewed coffees.
Astringent: is a puckering, salty sensation felt on the front side of the tongue when a cup of coffee is first sipped.
Baked: is a taste and odor contaminant that gives coffee a flat distinct and uninteresting taste. The corruption is caused by not enough heat over too long of a period during roasting, especially when roasting takes longer than about 18 minutes.
Balance: is the term to describe the coffee flavor when one coffee characteristic doesn't intrude on another. Also when the coffees taste is not plain so that it's flavor is still playful.
Bitter: a coffee characteristic of over-extracted brews as well as over-roasted coffees, and those with various taste defects. It's a harsh, unpleasant taste detected towards the back of the tongue and normally found only in dark roasts.
Bland: the pale flavor often found in low grown robusta coffees. Also caused by under-extracted coffees.
Blend: is a mixture of two or more individual varieties of coffees.
Body: is an impression of the weight of the coffee in the mouth. May range from thin to medium to full, buttery, or syrupy.
Bouquet: is a frequently used term, often used when referring to the smell of coffee grounds. Aroma is often distinctive and complex. Some terms used to describe it include: caramel (candy or syrup-like), carbon (for a dark roast), chocolate, fruity, floral, malty (cereal-like), rich, round, and spicy.
Bright: is a tangy acidity, often described as bright.
Briny: is the salty sensation caused by excessive heat after brewing is complete.
Buttery: Is a rich, oily, flavor and texture. This quality is found in some Indonesian varieties, such as Sulawesi.
Caramelized: Is a sweet, almost-burnt, syrupy flavor not unlike the taste of caramelized sugar.
Creme: is the tan foam that forms when you brew espresso. The creme makes a "cap" which helps retain the smells and flavors of the espresso within the cup.
Earthy: Is the positive coffee characteristic when applied to dry processing; the herbal, musty, mushroom-like range of flavors, characteristics of Indonesian coffees. For washed coffees, tasting "earthy" is a defect.
Exotic: is a characteristic of coffees from East Africa. Exotic refers to unusual flavor notes, such as floral and berry-like (containing black currant or blueberry notes, for example). This is contrary to Latin American coffees, whose clean, acidic flavors provide the standard and are generally not considered exotic.
Ferment: is a taste fault in coffee beans that produces a highly objectionable spoiled-fruit taste. Ferment is the result of enzymatic activity that occurs during the drying process, changing sugars to acids in the green coffee bean. Unlike dirtiness and mustiness, which can be disguised by dark roasting, ferment becomes worse the longer it cooks.
Flat: is an odor taint that occurs as a result of aromatic compounds departing from beans during the staling process in both whole-bean and ground coffees, or during the holding process in brewed coffees.
Fruit-Like: is a description that refers to the natural aroma of berries and that also correlates with the perception of high acidity. It shouldn't be confused with fruity, which is the first stage of the taste defect ferment.
Grassy: is a taste and odor defect that gives coffee the characteristic of newly mown alfalfa or green grass.
Green: is a herbal, grassy characteristic caused by incomplete development of flavor due to improper roasting. It may also be present in the early pickings of a new bean harvest.
Groundly: is a musty, earthy taste associated with coffees that have been damaged in drying or storage.
Harsh: is an unpleasant taste. Reminiscent of raw weeds, and typical of "robusta coffees and Brazils" that have been allowed to dry on the tree. It should be noted that a few coffee drinkers prefer harshness in the cup (see Rioy).
Hidy: is a coffee that has absorbed the aroma of leather or animal hides as a result of being stored or shipped in close proximity to these such items.
Heavy Roast: is very dark-roasted coffee with a bittersweet tang.
Mellow: is the middle of the road, a balanced flavor that's not too acidic and not too syrupy.
Musty: is a term usually applied to coffee flavors that result from improper heating or drying during processing. However, there also is a mustiness in vintage coffees that is a preferred quality. Connoisseur's, for example, love the naturally sweet mustiness of vintage Colombian coffees.
Rioy: is a harsh, medicine-like flavor present in some coffees produced in the Rio district of Brazil. The term is sometimes applied to any harsh-flavored coffees. The heavy, somewhat pungent, taste is preferred by a few coffee drinkers in the southern United States and France.
Soft: is a low acidic green coffee that is of good drinking quality, without any unpleasant taste characteristics. Similiar to the flavor aspect of mellow.
Sour: is a particular taste linked to bacterial fermentation of green coffee beans, that produces a lactic acid from the lactose and acetic acid from alcohol.
Spicy: is the aroma of coffee versus it's taste.
Sweet: is the trade term to describe coffees that don't taste harsh or damaged in any way. As opposed to harshness of a (Rioy).
Tangy: is the taste that would indicate a wine taste or acidic fruitiness that is quite pleasantly sharp, most evident in high-grown Costa Rican coffees.
Tannin: is a puckery flavor typically caused by the presence of chemicals that are related to tannic acid. A similar property is found in tea's and certain red wines.
Wild: describes coffees with extreme aroma or flavor that could be called defects or attributes to some.
Winey: are coffees with a fruity acid and smooth body, not unlike a fine red wine. A good example of a winey variety is Kenyan AA coffee.

This isn't really coffee news, but it should be of interest to all who blog or read blogs. Yahoo just announced that they are now adding internet journal entries and blogs to their online news search tool to supplement professional media offerings.

Under their new approach, a keyword search for online news will include a list of relevant blogs displayed in a box to the right of the results collected from mainstream journalism.

Although this strategy will serve as a test of the public's appetite for information from alternative sources, I see this as huge vindication to the many bloggers out there that are making their voices known through their writing in addition to validation for the growing number of people that are bypassing newspapers, magazines, and broadcast media to get their information from unconventional sources - like this blog!

I bet Google follows suit shortly.
