On this assignment for The Enterprise Newspapers, I looked for those meaningful moments, and tried my best to faithfully capture them. I got to meet some pretty neat kids, among them, Haley-Rose Smith, seen in the first photo using a walker. Smith suffered a debilitating injury to her legs that left her unable to walk. Her doctors told her she would likely never walk again. Months later, she has made a stunning recovery -- and using only a walker -- she walked in her high school graduation ceremony. Meeting interesting people and being able to tell their stories is just one more terrific part of being a photographer.

A few images:

Thanks for looking! I have been shooting a lot of unusual assignments this month, from men's fashion portraits to a story on a circus performance class, to wild art around town. Having access each day to some really terrific photographer's eye in critiquing the daily selects made growing possible. It was great too to see my fellow SSA participants grow too in such a short amount of time.

I think what really makes the workshop work is the number of different events you can shoot, and bring your personal eye and style to. It was not necessary to shoot telephoto necessarily for every event, nor wide for others. I loved the variety each day and it made for a wonderful week. Also, competing with 50 other photographers to make pictures that impressed faculty, or found a different angle, or showcased a unique moment -- was a real challenge and part of the fun of the Academy.

Getting to know all these different photographers was really fun too -- so many great war stories and hilarious nights. I will remember these good times guys.

To win Best Picture Saturday, Best Single Picture, and Best Student Portfolio is an incredible honor and an amazing feeling. Every day we were all trying so hard to make different and unique pictures and just to hear the faculty say "That's an almost" was a compliment its self. I am happy to win but just as happy to have been in the company of some really talented photographers this week.

If any student out there is considering a trip to a possible SSA VI, they should definitely attend -- you will grow as a photog, make some cool pictures, and have a great time -- if you put energy, enthusiasm, and creativity into the assignments.

Below are 10 of my favorite frames from Thursday, Friday, and Saturday:

Sports Shooter Academy V -- Saturday -- A runner lays on the track after falling during a relay race at the Ben Brown Invitational Track meet at Mount San Antonio College Saturday March 8, 2008. Earlier today me, Jared [SSA room mate], Rod Leland (from Canadia], Rich from Washington, and Mike from Washington, all went to Samy's Camera, this gigantic pro camera shop a few miles away from the hotel. It was a completely kid in the candy store moment for me. Luckily I had my wits about me and only picked up a 2nd 2 gigabyte memory card. The Amex lives another day....

Anyway, here are a few pictures I shot as we walked around today. They focus on the easiest California icon to shoot, palm trees:

I have got a bunch of time to kill until 7:30 when the event officially begins. This shot is right after take off in Seattle. I like the fog and the emerging islands below.

Tonight we will be figuring out our schedules for the rest of the week, and trying to meet everybody. It is pretty intimidating to meet some of these other photographers, whose names I have only heard in the context of 'wow'.

I have not decided what to shoot just yet but I will post pictures from the day, in the evening.

And p.s., my day started off amazing by saving $150/night for the first stay here in CA. Much thanks go to Juan, the kind man working this morning at the hotel that actually wanted to accommodate a student on a budget patronizing the hotel for a week.

Until later,

DanielDaniel Bermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13068298652048117688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12952913.post-61639361888186271192008-03-04T17:27:00.001-08:002008-03-04T17:31:24.801-08:00SSA V- DAY 1So the flight to California was nearly empty and I had the entire row to myself -- not a bad start to the trip at all. Right now I am getting situated in the hotel and freaking out over the cost. Oh well, hopefully my room mates are cool.

At any rate, here is a shot I took from the plane, I believe somewhere over California. Not sure though:

I know what you are thinking, another plane picture. But hey! It's a mountain bottom-left! I finally had the chance to shoot the event as real legitimate [credentialed] media. I was on assignment for 3 different publications: Seattle Sound Magazine, CMJ Magazine, and The Ebbtide of SCC. My pictures were used online at SeattleTimes.com as well.

Links to my pictures featured online:
SeattleTimes.com #1
SeattleTimes.com #2
CMJ Magazine (7 pictures)

I will post links to scanned copies of my work in the printed editions of Seattle Sound and CMJ when they come out.

DanielDaniel Bermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13068298652048117688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12952913.post-1140153080453994162006-02-16T21:08:00.000-08:002006-02-16T21:11:20.470-08:00Thank You For Smoking:I had the opportunity this morning to photograph Jason Reitman, director of the new film 'Thank You For Smoking', for my college newspaper. It is one of the most intelligent and funny films I have seen in a long time! I was able to attend the press screening of the film earlier this month and I could not stop laughing. The visuals are awesome. Jason actually shot the whole movie himself, so it was interesting to photograph a photographer (for the first time).

Daniel
Daniel Bermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13068298652048117688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12952913.post-1121758446170868662005-07-19T00:21:00.000-07:002006-02-16T21:24:58.453-08:00From Aphony:I had the opportunity to make some portraits recently of a local rock band called From Aphony. The most difficult part was not laughing everytime a bandmember said something rediculously funny, and to concentrate on my shooting.

These first two photos were processed in a sepia tone:

The last one was processed in an interesting high-contrast tone that I find complementary to the subject.

DanielDaniel Bermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13068298652048117688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12952913.post-1118807364425416172005-06-14T20:40:00.000-07:002006-02-16T21:24:05.620-08:00El Toro...I got an email late last week about possibly making a portrait of a local DJ and activist, DJ Kurt Reighley, aka 'El Toro'. He is one of the founding members of Stop Your Sobbing, a political activism group trying to encourage people to be more involved in the actions of their political representatives. They also are fighting to elect members to the Seattle City Council that are pro-music scene and in support of the arts in Seattle. Kurt also works as a DJ every Tuesday at a bar on Capitol Hill.

Two photos from the shoot.

I made the above photo using 2 flashes; one nikon strobe on full power with a red filter over the front for the background, and another nikon strobe on 1/32 power, with an amber filter to warm up Kurt's face. I like the contrasty and edgy look of the portrait as a result of the lighting.

This was made using natural light streaming in through a window. The coloring on the right side of Kurt's face is a result of neon lighting off to his right.

Thanks for looking.

Daniel

Daniel Bermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13068298652048117688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12952913.post-1117492361850087612005-05-29T22:09:00.000-07:002006-02-16T21:22:56.813-08:00Folklife 2005On Sunday I had the opportunity to cover the third day of the annual Seattle Folklife Festival, at Seattle Center.
Below are some photos I made during the event which continues until 11pm Monday (5/30):

Maria Hernandez tries to comfort daughter Amy, 4, after a try at playing in International Fountain.
