I think I've been in the US for too long and forgot how it feels to see a foreigner. Little kids stare at everything they see in astonishment, and adults rarely do too. I just tend to be the subject of this phenomenon recently, I guess.

Idk, the Washing Machine might content with the Dishwasher - but as you know from your bike ride across Japan, if you keep one set of cloths and one set of eating items both are irrelevant - but in a social context you are correct sir :)

I agree with all my being that mici are the most delicious thing I came across in Romania (I had forgotten about them until now). . . some of the kids in my city had the same reaction to the Asian girl I was working with (as well as a black kid from London passing through with a singing group). I think what I saw then, and it may help to think about, is that you are likely the first and only Asian person they have ever seen. Just look carefully to be sure that what seems like insult is not in fact astonishment. The shock of seeing someone so very different in appearance can cause people to blurt out without thinking. As hackneyed as it may sound, a smile, a handshake and a hello (or "salut" in Romanian) can go a long way.
