After a baby shower this weekend, I realized hom many people did not know that myself and 3 others were in a car wreck last weekend. I thought I told everyone, but that Vicadin's a powerful drug {Rick James chuckle}.

Anyway, here's the short version of the story: myself (driving) and three unnamed passengers (identities withheld as I haven't told them I'd be putting this up on the internet) were returning from a Wake Forest bball game (that they actually won!?!) when an old lady ran the red light at a 9-lane intersection and t-boned us right on the driver's side doors. We spun around at least once (hard to count) until we were stopped by the curb about 40ft away. Passenger A behind me in the back seat was knocked out for at least 5 mins while everyone else remained awake. I was compressed accordian style in the hit and the wind was knocked out of me by what felt like a Lincoln Town Car... turns out it was a Lincoln Town Car.

Passenger A and I made visits to the hospital, A by ambulance, me a couple of minutes later after some police work. Both of us were cleared that night with "soft-tissue" contusions and feeling like crap.

Passengers B and C on the passenger side were banged up, tweeked and torqued but did not seek immediate medical treatment, though still remain a bit sore. Passenger A is still having headaches and a little sore and I feel very similar, though I'd say my back hurts worse and more often more than my head.

Here's the lesson: buy Mercedes. We sere driving in what must be one of the biggest, sturdiest and most-tall-person-suited cars I've seen: a 1991 Mercedes-Benz 350SDL Turbo Diesel. This thing had 260k miles on it and drove better than my Jeep (which is how I ended up with this car from my pops). A night or so before the accident we parked next to a Ford Excursion, and the Big Benz was just as long... that's a lot of car folks. After this wreck, which is really the first for me, I am fully convinced that Big Benz saved all of us a lot more pain and maybe even our lives. Four of us took a four-door Lincoln doing about 40mph to the side and we essentially walked away from the accident (once Passenger A woke up).

Here's a site with some pictures of the car, I'd say Big Benz held up really well considering, so take it for what it's worth and keep safe.

I say hell yeah!!! How awesome would that be?

At best, he looks like a surfer-dude from Scooby-Doo, but plays like a Pistol Pete incarnate. Actually, he's been compared to just about every decent white basketball player of the last 50 years (Pistol, Dirk, Nash, Bird, Reddick, Zwikker... ok, not Zwikker), as well being described as a Julius Hodge that can shoot. After watching the high-lights, I'm going with the Jules meets Pistol. He's a skinny 6'5" and will join the team this January and sit out until Jan 2007 when he'll play as a Redshirt Freshman. Technically, he's a transfer from Pitt, but his whole story is too long and interesting for this post to cover. Just enjoy the clips...

As all of you know, the mighty Wolfpack have been selected by George Foreman and Meineke Auto to face off against the Southern Florida Bulls who incidentally will be playing in their first bowl game ever. Excited yet? It could be worse, you could have gone to chapel hill. The contest is scheduled for New Years Eve. This is where it gets better. New Years Eve falls on a Saturday this year. You'll have 1, possibly 2 full days to recover from any poor decisions you make during celebration(insert Cravin' Melon memory here). Also the contest is in Charlotte, NC so no plane flights or long drives. Uptown Charlotte (downtown to the transplants) has come along way from the days when St. John was shotgunning beers in high school. No it's a full fledged city now compete with nightlife and all. I'm sure they'll be quite a mess of people, many of them NC State grads ready to celebrate the New Year and also the possible Wolfpack victory. (I said possible- no need to jinx it).

Specifically the Neighborhood Theater will be hosting the 2nd annual Avett Brothers New Years Eve Bash. My brother went last year and said it kicked ass. Cost is $20- a cheap cover for a quality band on this night of the year. I expect it to sell out soon. If you haven't seen these guys live you're missing out. They're a local band getting national attention for their bounce-around bluegrass/newgrass/rock. Bubba will be dancing his ass off. So click on the above link and buy tickets. If not, there's plenty of other stuff to do too.

Also, my office is 6 blocks from the stadium. Parking will be cheap or possibly free. I can open the place up for the ladies to pee or if it rains. I thought this might make for an excellent place to meet up regardless of where people plan to stay or what they plan to do afterwards. Also i'm thinking of bringing a grill and cooking a little before hand and cooking a little afterwards. Beer will be prohibited. Damn you guys will believe anything. BYOB unless enough people speak up and then I'll get a keg or 2... Any takers?

As far as hotels go, they'll be more expensive that night then most. I would recommend staying Uptown. It'll cost more but by time you drive in, pay for a cab out and then get someone to bring you back in to get your car the next morning I imagine you might rather just stay close to the action. I've done this once before and it was very nice to be able walk back to a room and crash when I felt like it. The choice of course is yours. You can use this link, HOTELS, to find something uptown.

I live about 20 miles from Uptown in Concord. Anyone who'd like is welcome to come and join us on Friday. I'll put up as many people as possible and the rest can sleep outside with the chickens or over at my brother's house. Believe it or not there are a couple of cool places to go out within walking distance of my house.

If you think you're going to be in town for the game please let me know. I'll put the list together so maybe we can catch up while you're here. I hope not too many of you have gotten too old. I hope to see as many of you as possible.

Some Good New Music

It's holiday time and the last bastion of decent musical artists are beginning to release their material in time for the shopping season, others have been there and you just didn't know it... here are some picks from Your's Truly available at iTunes:

Wilco's new Double CD Live from the Vic Theater in Chicago Kicking Televisions is quite good, especially if you're already a fan of theirs.

If you don't really know Wilco, start here: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. It's one of the best CDs around from front to back. Many people won't like them from a quick sampling, but if you take 15-20 mins to get into this CD, you'll listen all the way through and come back to it repeatedly. If you have to choose a single though, go with Heavy Metal Drummer.

My favorite live CD from a band that is infinitely better live than in a recording studio is O.A.R.'s 34th & 8th album. It's actually about a year old, but has all of the good songs you'd like to hear from O.A.R. and the show has a tremendous flow to it (not to sound like a damn dirty hippie...), check it out.

If you don't know Galactic yet, think of what would happen if The Meters started their career 25 years later... you'd get a New Orleans Funk Groove but with a slightly more modern jam sound. This stuff is great, just go take a listen to Galactic Vintage Reserve, a sort of Best of... album that encompasses most of their good ones from their first four albums.

The Avett Brothers: a little Bluegrassy, but none the less awesome. These guys rock... especially live. See them if you can, otherwise hear them.

Alright, maybe I should have called this: The Best Live Bands You May Not Know, but I didn't, so whatever. If you know any other good music that we don't see on TRL, let us know about 'em! Enjoy some new music kids...
