One of our patrons was using one of these today to scan pages from local history books. It's called a DocuPen--it's the size of a pen and scans pages and documents in 4 seconds, then lets you uploads the images to your PC in less than a minute.

“Sock It To Us” Sock Drive in Library Lobby Now Through October 31st

The Voluntary Action Center of NEPA is once again holding a “Sock It to Us” sock drive. Now through October 31st, they will be accepting NEW socks…any size, color, style to help out human services agencies throughout Lackawanna County.

The "Sox Box" is located in the mail lobby at Albright Memorial Library.

Downtown Scranton Scavenger Hunt Saturday, October 4th, Noon - 3 PM

In conjunction with this year's Scranton Reads selection The Maltese Falcon, Albright Memorial Library will be hosting a downtown Scranton Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, October 4th.

The Scavenger Hunt will begin at Albright Memorial Library at Noon and conclude at the Everhart Museum at 3 PM

Participation is FREE and open to the public. The first group to complete the Scavenger Hunt with the most retrieved clues will win a Downtown Scranton Gift Basket!

Good news for those who were unable to attend one of our library's most popular programs. The Ghost Hunters will be returning to Scranton in October--just in time for Halloween.

Due to overwhelming popular demand, the library will again be hosting NYPAPS - New York Pennsylvania Paranormal Society - paranormal investigators or Ghost Hunters. They will be returning to Albright Memorial Library on Thursday, October 23rd at 6:30 PM.

The Society will start off with an informative talk, show a presentation of their work and answer questions the audience will have.

They will also present the results of their findings during their investigation of the library in August.

This program is not suitable for children.

To accomodate more people who want to attend this program (one of our most popular programs), Ghost Hunters will be presented in the Periodicals Room of the Reference Department, which is not handicapped accessible.

"Sala's Gift" Exhibit and Book Discussion Wednesday, September 10th from 5:30 - 7:30 PM

In 1940, sixteen year old Sala Garncarz was ordered to report to a Nazi forced labor camp. She spent almost five years enslaved by the Nazis.

A moving exhibit of the letters from family and friends that Sala managed to hide and keep safe during those years of suffering is going to be displayed at the University of Scranton's Weinberg Memorial Library this September. More than 300 letters and other documents were donated by the Sala's family to the Dorot Jewish Division of The New York Public Library's Humanities and Social Sciences Library in April 2005.

To support the exhibit and add to the understanding of Sala's inspiring experience, the Albright Memorial Library will be hosting a group visit to Sala's Gift, followed by a book

The Albright Memorial Library is proud to host the August editions of The Socrates Cafe, the widely popular philosophy discussion forum. Prof. Phil Jenkins from Marywood University will be the facilitator.

August's installments of Socrates Cafe will be held Thursday, August 14th and Thursday, August 28th from 6:30 PM to 8 PM in the Community Room.

Each gathering brings together people from all walks of life and experiences to raise questions, listen to, and discuss a topic chosen by the group that evening.

Socrates--the Greek philosopher after whom the group is named -- exhorted his students to "follow the argument wherever it leads." All sessions are committed to open, respectful philosophical discussion and debate. No prior learning is required.

The Socrates Cafe is free, but please call Laura Hendricks at 348-3000 ext. 3043 to reserve your space as it is limited to 25 people.
