Craig Fertig passed away in Newport Beach and the USC community is mourning one of it's brightest stars.

Everyone knows of the Fertig to Rod Sherman pass in the last minute of the 1964 USC-Notre Dame game that brought USC back from a 17-0 halftime deficit to a 20-17 victory.

Craig's association with USC spanned over 50 years as a player, coach, administrator, and TV analyst. His association with the Trojan Club of San Diego was a treasure.

Coach Fertig would come down whenever we asked and he would regale us with stories of his career, his association with John McKay, and his observations on the football program. He would spend his allotted time with the organized program and then adjourn to the closest wine emporium with all those who wanted more, and hours later the stories would have to stop. He is personally responsible for helping us raise thousands of dollars that we contributed back to the athletic department to all help our teams strive for excellance.

I got to visit with the Coach for the last time at his normal tailgate spot before the Ohio State game. That will be one of the fond memories I take with me. I consider my life blessed to have the honor of calling Coach Fertig my friend.

Please keep the Fertig family, and the lovely and gracious Margaret O'Connor, in your thoughts and prayers. And, I know he would want us all to...

Fight On! and, Beat the Sun Devils!

Rest in Peace Coach.

Dan Orr
President 2007-2009Dan Orrhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01511012954843744857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12741393.post-70191236964926082192008-09-29T10:59:00.000-07:002008-09-29T11:11:21.486-07:00President's MessageSan Diego Trojans,

Well you can't win them all! Of course, you don't need to stink up the gym either. Yikes! Who were those imposters up at Covallis and what have they done with our Trojan Football team?

But, hey, Women's Volleyball, Women's Soccer, and Men's Water Polo are doing great! So's the football team actually, just one little hiccup.

We have buses available for the October 4 game against Oregon and the October 11 game against ASU. Call Dorothy McRann at 619-698-2330 to make reservations. We are forced, because of liability issues, to make the buses a BYOB situation if you want adult beverages. We'll provide plenty of soft drinks and water, but booze from the Trojan Club is a no-no.

And, don't forget to make your reservations for our next Trojan Club luncheon featuring Ben Malcomson, OnLine Media Director for the USC football team and a former walk-on and DT sports reporter. Call Ray Weber at 619-238-6216 or 619-282-3106. My apologies to our Jewish Trojan Family members because I scheduled this event on Yom Kippur. I didn't know it at the time and we were unable to re-schedule.

Fight On! I hope you all got to see it either in person, at home, or at one of our three veiwing venues. At 35-3 it was a vicious beating and our Trojans looked good in all aspects of the game.

Cross country was in town for the Aztec Invitational last Saturday. The Trojan women finished sixth in the open/college division. Congratulations to Coach Walsh and the team. I had the honor of presenting them with the Trojan Club of San Diego's $1000 donation, which we do for all USC teams that visit us down here. We are able to do this on the behalf of all San Diego Trojans so big thanks go out to all who support our events.

Next up is USC at Oregon State on Thursday night, September 25. Kick-off is at 6:00 p.m. and we're the only game in town! Things should be rocking at our three viewing locations. If you want to get out of the house and enjoy the fellowship of other Trojans please join us at the PB Bar & Grill in Pacific Beach, the Del Mar Marriott, or, if you're really far north, the Bullpen in Encinitas. Complete addresses are on the home page. XX 1090 Sports Radio will be doing their remote from the PB Bar & Grill, so let's have a big turnout.

The next home game is against Oregon on October 4. There's still room on the buses if you want to skip the hassle of driving and parking.

Fight On! All I know is that the streak is still alive. Trojan athletes have won at least one gold medal in every Olympics since 1912!

Football season is here! How do I know? Pete Arbogast came to town to help whip the faithful into a frenzy! Does he think we'll win them all? No. Will we be favored in EVERY game? Yes! If they continue to play like Trojans we could be in for another great year!

The Women of Troy Soccer team opened their NCAA championship defense against USD, sans their gold winning star Amy Rodriguez. No worries, they still prevailed 1-0 and on behalf of the Club I was privileged to give Coach Ali and the team our $1000 donation which we give to all USC teams visiting San Diego.

Come out next weekend, August 30, and join your fellow Trojans for the USC @ UVA game. Kick-off is 12:30 p.m. PDT and we'll be hosting viewing parties at the PB Bar & Grill in Pacific Beach, the Del Mar Marriott at I-5 and Carmel Valley Road, and at the Bullpen in Encinitas at Encinitas Blvd and El Camino Real. Get off the couch and join us! Complete addresses are on the homepage.

The next football luncheon is September 12 featuring USC all-american Duane Bickett. The great American ethnic drinking holiday! Party hats and horns here in Coronado, I hope you all have as good a time as we all have.

Not much going on with the Trojan Club of San Diego in July so now might be a good time to sign up as a member at our new website (you're reading this, so you found it, now sign up!).

Things start popping in August though. First up is TCSD Day at the Races on August 17. Contact Tom Schiff at tschiff@aol.com for details and reservations.

The Voice of the Trojans Pete Arbogast comes to town on August 22 for our first fall luncheon (and a little bodysurfing on August 23). All our luncheons are held at the Ramada Inn and Conference Center in Kearny Mesa. Contact Dan Orr at danorr@alumni.usc.edu for details or continue to check the "events calendar" section for details.

Last, but not least, football season arrives on August 30 as the Mighty Trojans travel to Charlottesville to face the Virginia Cavaliers. Kick-off is 12:30 p.m PDT and the Trojan Club is teaming up with the PB Bar & Grill and XX1090 Sports Radio for our away game viewing parties. Again, contact Dan Orr for more information.

That's it for now. But, come August will be back with a vengence with fall football camp opening, dozens of Trojans in the Olympic Games, and the aforementioned TCSD events.

Fight On! The lovely and gracious Lindsay Soto moderated a very informative, and funny, evening as the coaches conspired to fire up the faithful as we wait for next season.

Keep your fingers crossed, but it sounds like, if the athletes play up to their potential, that we should have great seasons in both football and basketball. But, the best part of the evening was the quality time that both Pete and Tim spent with each and every table and guest. And, the highlight was the attendence of both John Robinson and Bob Boyd. (We even made Scott Wolf's column as a result.)

The Trojan Club of San Diego was honored to present its Don Clausen Memorial Award to our volunteer of the year, Carol Wootton. Carol has been the greatest help, running our raffles, participating in all our activities, and helping in every way with a smile on her face. She's an absolute pleasure, a great Trojan, and unquestionably our Don Clausen Memorial Award honoree.

Pat Park was named the winner of our Marv Goux Award for the TCSD board member who most emulates the spirit of Marv Goux. Pat was traveling and we'll make a big fuss over him at our first football luncheon on August 22.

So, all in all, it was a great week for the Trojan Club of San Diego. We spent Sunday manning our annual water station for the Rock and Roll Marathon and then Wednesday night with two of our favorite coaches.

Things slow down a bit for the next two months, but football starts in August and we already have Pete Arbogast, Ben Malcomson, and JJ Jackson lined up as speakers for our fall programs and John Robinson said he was available if he wasn't on the road, so watch the website and make sure you save the dates of all our fall football luncheons. Information regarding our rooter buses to the games is also posted on the website.

Have a great summer! Fight On! Coach Ferguson, Coach Holland, and all the players and fellow alums made it another day to remember. Galen is a long way from the old North Gym! I will always be the oldest one on the floor as I played on the first NCAA team, but everyone indulged the Old Guy and I want to thank them all.

Fight On! It should be a fun way to spend Super Bowl Eve so if you're looking for a cheap date, come on over.

Ray Weber and the basketball fans have sold out all 71 of our tickets for the USC vs. Oregon State game on February 23. Congratulations to Coach Carroll and the whole football team, especially the seniors. What a run it's been!

I know everyone that went to the game had a blast, especially those smart enought to ride the Famous TCSD Rooter Bus. Those of us who stayed in San Diego had a grand time at our "Official" host hotel, the Ramada Inn & Conference Center. They put out a super buffet and we ate and drank our way through SC's great victory over the Illini.

We have a busy month coming up starting with a viewing party for the USC vs. UCLA basketball game on Saturday, January 19 at 12:30 p.m. at the Ramada Inn & Conference Center, 5550 Kearny Mesa Road, San Diego 92111. If you think you'll be coming please RSVP to Ray Weber or me (our emails are in the contact section) so the restaurant will be ready for us.

On January 24 we welcome two great Trojans, Darrell Rideaux and Brandon Hancock, to the Ramada for a luncheon to celebrate the 2007 season and the 2008 Rose Bowl, and to look forward to the 2008 season. Letter of Intent Day is the first Wednesday in February so we can expect Darrell and Brandon to have lots to say about the potential "nuggets" in the new class of recruits.

Something near and dear to me, Men's Volleyball, comes to San Diego to face the Tritons of UCSD on Saturday night, February 2 at RIMAC Center at 7:00 p.m. While the plans aren't complete, pencil in a dinner with the team and chalk-talk before the match. Please continue to monitor the website as we will update it there as soon as the plans are finalized.

Last, but certainly not least, ROAD TRIP! The TCSD has 50 tickets together at Galen Center for the February 23 game against Oregon State. The cost is $30 and you provide the transportation or $50 per ticket and we provide the transportation. If you can get up to LA and back for $20, good on you!

So, it's a busy January and February. Just because football is over it doesn't mean we cease being Trojans. There are 18 other teams that need our support. I look forward to seeing you at some or all of our events.

Happy New Year! Fight On! It will be $15 per adult and $5.50 per child, so bring the whole family and eat, drink, and root on the Trojans.

We'll also have Trojan and Trojan Club merchandise and our famous raffle. And, your Trojan Club is going to keep it going even bigger and better in 2008.

It all starts with the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day against the University of Illinois. If you're not going to the game please make plans to join us at the "official" home of the Trojan Club of San Diego, the Ramada Inn & Conference Center in Kearny Mesa (5550 Kearny Mesa Blvd). Kick off is at 2:00 p.m. and we'll be there to watch all the action with food, fun, and raffles.

Next up is the USC vs. UCLA basketball game on January 19th. Again, we'll meet at the Ramada Inn at 12:30 p.m. to watch the game.

To wrap up the 2007 football season, former Trojan greats Darrell Rideaux and Brandon Hancock will visit us for a luncheon program on Thursday, January 24th. We'll review the 2007 season, the 2008 Rose Bowl, recruiting and Letter of Intent Day, and look forward to the 2008 season.

February 2nd brings the Men's Volleyball team to town to play UCSD. Keep checking the website as we're trying to put together a dinner with the team and a "chalk talk" from the coaches before we head over to the RIMAC Center for the 7:00 p.m. match.

The Trojan Club has reserved 50 tickets for the USC vs. Oregon State basketball game on February 23rd. Road trip! $30 for the ticket only, and $50 for the ticket and the bus ride to Galen Center.

It's going to be a busy winter for the Trojan Club of San Diego. Make plans to join us when you can. We continue to endeavor to bring you fun and interesting events and we appreciate your support.

Have a great 2008!

Fight On! I thought soccer was just a bunch of socialists playing for a tie. Now, the Women of Troy are National Champions! Congratulations!

The Women's Volleyball team is in the final four of the NCAA championships in Sacramento. Knock off Stanford and THEY'RE in the finals!

It hasn't been a bad fall to be a Trojan. We know how the football team's doing; Men's Water Polo finished second in the NCAAs; Women's Soccer are the champions, and Women's VB is still alive to bring home a second championship in a week.

Closer to home, your Trojan Club has completed its fall schedule of events and we averaged almost 75 at each of our five football luncheons and our two buses were consistantly almost 90% filled. Thank you all for your support of our events, we hope you had fun.

Keep checking the website for next year's events. In the works are a luncheon centered around Letter of Intent Day featuring Darrell Rideaux, Brandon Hancock, and, hopefully, the lovely and gracious Lindsay Soto; a team dinner with the Men's Volleyball team when they come to San Diego to beat up on UCSD, and a spring dinner featuring a position coach from the football team.

We endeavor to provide great events that keep San Diego Trojans in touch with USC. We're always open for suggestions so please don't ever hesitate to contact one of us and give us the benefit of your thinking.

Have a Merry Christmas and happy holiday time, and...

Fight On! Bring on the Illini!

It's great to be a Trojan! It's always great to be a Trojan, especially if it means meeting a Big 10 team in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day after beating the gutty little bruins to get there. And, oh by the way, how many coaches have now been sacked after fruitless encounters with the Mighty Trojans?

While we're at it, congratulations to the Mens Water Polo team who finished second in the NCAA's over the weekend, and to the Womens Soccer Team who have reached the NCAA semi-finals and all they have to do is bury the bruins and they're in the finals as well.

Many thanks to John "JJ" Jackson and Garry Paskeiwitz for slugging their way through the horrendous rain-soaked traffic to get down here and address our final football luncheon of the year. Thanks also to Ron Fletcher for stepping in and keeping the crowd pacified while we waited for our two lost souls. For the record, JJ got the number of touchdowns given up by USC correct, for the second year in a row, while missing slightly on the offensive production (He predicted 35-7).

Your Trojan Club while be sponsoring at least one bus to the Rose Bowl game, so if you're interested make your call now (see the homepage of this website for the phone numbers) so we make sure we can accommodate everyone who wants to ride.

Continue to check the website for our upcoming events including (but not limited to) a recruiting recap luncheon in late January, an event surrounding the Mens Volleyball visit to San Diego, and a position coach's dinner in early spring.

Thank you for all your support of TCSD's activities. Beat theBruins! In fact, beat on them like a drum! I want to hear "Tusk" played about a dozen times.

To get you fired up for Saturday's game we have the great John "JJ" Jackson coming down for lunch on Friday, please make plans to join us. The homepage of this website has complete details for making reservations and directions to the Bayview Restaurant.

How about that Thanksgiving Day game? The only turkeys on the field were the refs. It's tough enough to play 22 fired up ASU-types, but when you have to overcome the officials... The zebras must have tken the three points.

But, what a great day. A nice 50-mile bike ride in the morning, yummy turkey with my mom, dad, sister, and our families, then pie and ice cream on the TV trays watching our beloved Trojans just carve up the Sun Devils. It should have been 44-3.

I hope St. Pete and the Boys have plans to lay 40 or 50 on the gutty little bruins. Come join us Friday and get some insight on how this is going to happen. See you then as we celebrate the season (and The Season) and look forward to the Rose Bowl (and all is right in the world!)

Fight On! Well, Thanksgiving anyway. Beat the Sun Devils! I like our chances against ASU and ucla, and if we win out good things will happen for our 10-2 Trojans.

Big props to all the San Diego Trojans who made the journey north to sit in that godawful weather and help bring us home a victory over the Bears. Sitting in my nice warm living room I could still hear the Trojan faithful and the Band much louder than the Cal section.

JJ is next on the agenda. Make your plans and mark your calendars for November 30 when our final football luncheon will take place featuring John "JJ" Jackson. JJ is a former USC All-American and scholastic All-American as well. Now with Fox Sports covering high school and college football, he is our traditional season wrap-up speaker and always draws a huge crowd. So, make your reservations today. We'll review the 2007 season, scout the ucla game, and look forward to our bowl appearence.

Speaking of the USC-ucla game, there's still room, I think, on the rooter bus to the Coliseum. With gas at a zillion dollars per gallon it's the best deal in town with food and drinks included.

The officers and board of directors of the Trojan Club of San Diego wish all Trojans a very happy Thanksgiving.

Fight On! Beat the Sun Devils!

Dan Orr
President 2007-2009Dan Orrhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01511012954843744857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12741393.post-31456884279173478812007-11-04T17:00:00.000-08:002007-11-04T17:20:43.125-08:00President's MessageNovember 4, 2007

San Diego Trojans,

A tremendous "thank you" to Rob Preston and Gordon Adams, quarterbacks from the great -78 & '79 teams, for coming to address our football luncheon last Friday. It doesn't get any better than a bunch of Trojans having the chance to talk some football and share some stories from a storied past. The guys were great, informative and entertaining, and if you missed it you missed a special afternoon.

Our next, and final, football luncheon will be November 30 featuring John "JJ" Jackson. JJ is a Trojan All-American and current FSN football commentator. It's a tradition that JJ close our annual luncheon series and he's always been well received.

Homecoming was a blast! We hosted two full buses, Ray Weber, Carol Wooten, and Pat Park did land office business at our booth across from Tommy Trojan, and, oh yeah, the football team didn't do too badly either, especially if you like defense.

If you're not lucky enough to make the trip to San Francisco for next weekend's game with Cal, please make plans to join us at the Bullpen in Encinitas. As always, check the homepage of this website for all information regarding away game viewing, bus reservations, football luncheons, and all our other TCSD events.

I guess that's it, except for one more thing:

Fight On! Beat the Bears!

Dan Orr
President 2007-2009Dan Orrhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01511012954843744857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12741393.post-85721836331443886882007-10-29T10:22:00.000-07:002007-10-29T10:35:56.188-07:00President's Message - October 29, 2007San Diego Trojans,

The great Yogi Berra once noted, "90% of this game is mental. The other half is physical." I think that just about covers it for our beloved Trojans this year. We have the talent, do we have the desire?

We are the Trojan Family and we're all IN! Homecoming is this weekend and it's time to right the ship and beat up on the Beavers. The Trojan Club of San Diego still has a few seats on the rooter buses so if you need a ride, make a reservation and join the fun.

This Friday, November 2 is our fourth fall football luncheon featuring former USC quarterbacks Rob Preston and Gordon Adams. Rob and Gordon were teammates on the 1978 National Championship team and backed up All-American Paul McDonald in 1979. They have some insight regarding being on the "best team in the history of college football" and could help us understand living up to high expectations. Remember, that 1979 team had Charles White, Marcus Allen, Anthony Munoz, Brad Budde, Ronnie Lott and Paul McDonald among its future NFLers. It will be a fun time so call now and make reservations. As with the buses, all the information you need will be on the home page.

Look for our booth at Homecoming between Tommy Trojan and the bookstore and stop by and say hi. Then wear Cardinal to the game and bring your Trojan spirit. The team needs our support.

Fight On! Even if this is the worst, most inept Notre Dame team in anyone's memory it's still the Irish and it's still AT South Bend. Bring on the Ducks!

The Trojan Club will be meeting at the Bullpen in Encinitas to watch the Oregon game. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. So, make plans to join us for lunch, libations, laughs, and a thorough licking of the Ducks. We'll have TCSD merchandise and a raffle, so bring a couple extra bucks.

Make plans to attend our next football luncheon which will be November 2 at the Bayview Restaurant on the Marine Corps Recruit Depot. Our guest speakers will be Gordon Adams and Rob Preston. Gordon and Rob were highly recruited local quarterbacks who had the pleasure of playing behind All-American Paul McDonald. Do we have a quarterback controversy? How does a coach keep all the "nuggets" happy when there is only one ball and eleven guys on the field. Gordon and Rob can tell us what it's like and give us their take on our first eight games. Rob is also this year's president of the Trojan Football Alumni Club.

All the information you need to make reservations is on the home page of this website. Make your reservations today!

The Irish are old news. Fight On!
