I'm a big fan of broadband phone service. Service outages are rare, and prices are dirt cheap. Before I switched I was paying about $120/month for phone service. This included our local calling plan and an occaisonal long distance call.

That's ridiculous. We switched to broadband and now we pay a quarter of that. And my wife can call her friend in upstate NY all she wants...I still pay the same price.

POP! goes the housing bubble...

Well, it's not like it's a surprise. Housing prices have stalled and home sales have decreased for the last year or so. Rising interest rates have really put a damper on consumer's ability to borrow and it's slowed the housing market to a crawl.

According to an article on Yahoo News, sales of existing homes has fallen for the fifth consecutive month. Homes are remaining on the market for longer and sellers are being forced to lower their price to make a deal.

Bugs all fixed?

Ok, apparently a lot of people were getting error messages that many pages on the site were missing even though they were on the server. Looks like a simple technical error on my part (I've been burning both ends of the candle lately and sometimes you miss obvious things when you do that).

Looks like all is well. I'l continue testing to make sure we don't run into the same problems again.

Lots of Changes...

Just a quick note to let you know about all the changes I've made to the site. I have't added much new content lately because I've been busy redesigning and updating it.

I wanted to make the navigation a little easier and also to clean up the coding because some of the pages were loading very slowly.

I've also categorized many articles to make it easier to find what you're looking for.

Another change I made that you'll notice is that this blog has a new look. I also migrated it over to the same server as my main site rather than having it hosted directly on blogger.com. This gives me a little bit more control of things.

Update on Datapro (data entry from home)

Update...After doing some more research on Datapro and how the program works, its not the great deal I was led to believe. Basically, you sign up to become their affiliate and sell their product. They recommend you use Google Adwords to promote Datapro using keywords such as 'work from home', 'data entry jobs', etc. You place an ad using Adwords with a link back to their site and if someone buys it you'll get a commission.

While it is possible to make money from this deal, you will also have to spend more money on Google Adwords. Its not really a scam because you can make a lot of money if you do it right. But its not really the product I thought it was.

Is Your Pension Safe??

It seems that every day there is a story on the news about another large company defualting on pension contributions. The old defined-benefit pensions of the past are all but gone, and many retirees and workers will find out that they will not be getting everything they are entitled too.

President Bush asked Congress to craft a plan to help solve the problem and secure the future of America's retirees, but it appears Congress has dropped the ball and caved in to special interest groups.

The plans on the table are loaded with deals for lobbyists. Rather than being required to contribute more to pension funds to make up for the current $450 billion shortfall, corporate contributions would actually be reduced.

The government's Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp projects that the plans will only make the situation worse for the average American.

According to a new study by the Employee Benefit Research Institute, about 68 percent of Americans are confident they will be able to retire comfortably.

But is this confidence warranted? With American savings almost non-existent, rising heath-care costs, questions about Social Security, and pension plans going the way of the dinosaurs, many people could be in for a rude awakening.

The study is an interesting contrast between perception and reality and it also demonstrates the overall lack of financial literacy in the US.
