The cost of this growing problem is $8-9 billion dollars annually. For Americans, our vehicle is the primary mode of transportation. The emotional and financial toll combined with the inconvenience makes the cost very high for those whove had their vehicle stolen.Since theft is committed by professionals, the FBI notes that preventing vehicle theft in the first place is critical.In fact, a car or truck is stolen in the United States every 27 seconds. FBI reports indicate that more than three out of four vehicles are stolen at the locations mentioned below, which is where vehicles are most commonly parked. More than one half of thefts take place in areas where vehicles are parked without attendants. Home

Road or alley"While tracking and vehicle recovery devices have helped to nudge the rate of recovery of stolen vehicles. Most of the vehicles that were not recovered, were not here to be recovered", explains Whigham. "The decline in the recovery rate can be attributed to the proliferation of organized vehicle theft over the past five years". "Auto theft for joy riding has now taken the back seat to auto theft as a part of organized crime, which racked up hundreds of millions of dollars of profits in the US and abroad last year. Organized criminal groups make a profit by exporting stolen vehicles to foreign countries, or selling their parts in whole or in part for reconstructed vehicles being resold through ads in local media". KNOW WHO YOU'RE BUYING FROMThese organized groups also are in the business of providing new Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) for stolen cars, making it easier to sell them in the US and abroad. A VIN is 17-character code at the bottom left corner of a vehicles front windshield, which identifies a vehicles characteristics, such as its make, model, and color, and it is unique to each vehicle.
Some common ways that thieves can obtain a VIN is from vehicles stolen in another province, or by acquiring it from a wrecked vehicle. Last year alone, Police identified thousands of vehicles in the US that had been re-VINed. As a result of this growing trend, Whigham warns the public to be wary of who they purchase a vehicle from. He recommends buying from a certified automobile dealer such as a member of the NADA - National Automobile Dealers Association, or someone who they know personally.
