How does your business stack up against others? Are you one of the elite that stands head and shoulders above the rest? Do you fall somewhere in the middle? Or, say it ain't so, your web site is struggling with the lowly ones, barely making a profit.

Maybe we should consider "How do you measure success?"

When we first started our site Work-at-home-4-freedom, if we had one sale a day, we shouted from the roof tops! Today, we are disappointed if we aren't receiving multiple upon multiple sales, with more and more profit.

Now, don't get me wrong. There is nothing bad about wanting to profit, but that in itself does not make you a success. To be a success, you must think about your fellow man.

Has your web site made life a little easier for a person today? Then you are a success.

Have you given hope to someone that is struggling to make ends meet? Then you are a success.

Maybe you have provided someone the opportunity to turn their life around by making a few extra dollars. Then you are a success.

Have you had the opportunity to help someone else build their business? These friends feel that you do not have the opportunity to truly control your own life until you are eligible for retirement. That is so sad!

They went so far as to say they would not be interested in volunteer work, because even then you are totally at the mercy of someone else. You will be told when you are needed at your volunteer postition.

We are fortunate in that we have a home based business. No one tells us when to work. We choose. Will your family survive without your paycheck? Is it possible for a real novice to make an income while working from home?

Let's go back to the beginning. A time when we were told the only way to provide financially for our family was by being employed in the corporate world.
This world is not always the most pleasant place to reside. You know all about the boss that takes you for granted. You work for years for the same boss, going above and beyond what is required. You give your all to “the company” hoping that your efforts will be rewarded.

But will your efforts be rewarded? You can not depend on the corporate world to provide for you or your family. This has become your responsibility. So many companies are now downsizing or closing completely.

Just because you have worked many years for a company does not guarantee you continued employment. You could find yourself unemployed without notice. Companies no longer feel an obligation to their employees. The choice may not be yours on when you leave your 9-5 job. You could find yourself without employment before the day is over. It is still amazing at the number of people who fool themselves into believing their future is secure.

Now think of the great entrepreneurs of the world. Did they rely on someone else to provide their security. NO! They found their niche and worked for themselves.

So, it all comes down to having faith in yourself. Or would you rather rely on someone that really doesn't care about you or your needs.

The success of my business is totally my responsibility. I get out of it whatever I put in to it, and that is a great feeling. I am in control, I make my own decisions. I do not punch a time clock or answer to a boss. No one will ever tell me my services are no longer needed.

If you received your pink slip tomorrow, could your family still manage? Would there be utter chaos in your home if you no longer received a weekly paycheck?
I know I can not afford NOT to work at home. Can you?

Hank and Dot Stevens own http://www.work-at-home-4-freedom.com/ Their website contains work at home opportunities and home based business opportunities.Hank and Dothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02980035818652281710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12558853.post-21842753220712722982007-03-05T19:17:00.000-05:002007-03-15T23:06:37.551-04:00Make Money filling out SurveysPeople often ask us if it is possible to make money filling out surveys? Talk to people who are doing the same thing you are. Get their input on your ideas. It never hurts to have a second opinion.

Got a problem? Help is out there. It is almost certain that someone else has encountered the same thing. These people can talk you through your problem and save you hours, maybe days of valuable time.

Got a solution? People need your help. Don't hesitate to help others. Remember one day you were where they are now.

Did you succeed? Share your success. It gives hope and confidence to others.

I can't imagine how anyone could truly succeed in a home business without the interaction of other people. Go join a forum or a chat group. You will be glad you did!

Don't be an island unto yourself.Hank and Dothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02980035818652281710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12558853.post-1163995998604418592006-11-19T23:01:00.000-05:002006-11-19T23:18:55.456-05:00Don't Get Side-TrackedThere are hundreds of distractions that vie for
your time, energy and focus when you work from home.

These may include: children, family,
friends, neighbors, pets, phone calls, mail,
chores, video games, television, etc.

Why did you choose to work from home?
Was your goal to work from home so that
you can be there for your children? Was your
goal to be out from under the rule of a horrible
boss? Was your goal to have the freedom to work
when it is convenient for you? Was your goal to
make money working for yourself?

Here are some tips that will help you stay
focused on your home business:

TIP #1:

Don't forget the reason you started your business.
If you forget your reason for starting
your own home business, you will not be working
for yourself for long. It is far too easy to let
circumstances dictate your desire to work from home.

TIP #2:

When you work for yourself, your salary is directly
proportional to the work you do . Therefore,
wouldn't it make sense to stay focused on getting
as much done in as short of a period as possible?

TIP #3:

Schedule your work. Know what needs to be accomplished
each day and make certain you obtain your goal. Also be
prepared to work a set number of hours each day.

TIP #4:

Do not permit friends and family to
intrude on your work. This is not your time to socialize.
Be firm. They must understand you ARE working! If they
wish to socialize with you, then schedule it for a time
that you are not working.

CONCLUSION:

In the end, the success of your home business is
entirely and completely reliant upon you and the
decisions that you make.

You had your reasons for deciding to start your
own home based business. You must always keep
your reasons in the forefront of your mind. You
must always be able to rely upon your own self
and your dedication to the success of your
business.

Your friends and family may be annoyed that
you aren't free to visit, but you are working.

Success is within your reach, if only you can
stay focused on your goals. You must decide to
reach for your goals, and then, you must have the
discipline necessary to reach them.

---------------------------------------------------------

Visit our web site Work-at-home-4-freedom for the top resources and opportunities for working from homeHank and Dothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02980035818652281710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12558853.post-1162786034441637602006-11-05T23:00:00.000-05:002006-11-05T23:07:14.496-05:00"Whatchya Waiting For?There's one marketing condition I see over and over with my clients, and it's called "but-I'm-not-an-expert-itis". These people are afraid to play bigger because they think it's not their time yet. (The important words there being "they think".) They're waiting for something to happen - a degree, a certification, a blessing from the gods in their industry, a recognitional nod from their respected peers.

Please listen carefully: This attitude will kill your business and take years off your life! It's VERY important to position yourself from the get-go as an expert in what you do.

Why do you want to be seen as an expert? Experts are more respected, get media attention, can market more easily and inexpensively, get paid more, and receive less price resistance (meaning people are happier to pay what you ask).

So, instead of waiting for someone to invite you to the top of the mountain, I urge you to simply "leap frog" your way over everyone else at the bottom.

Hear me loud and clear: You do not need anybody's permission to believe you're the best at what you do and share that fact! In fact, here are a few points I make to my clients if they are expressing doubt about their "qualifications" to sell information, programs, or services and charge well for them.

In the eyes of your prospects, clients, customers, and the media, you're seen as an expert if...

1. You Know More About Your Topic Than Your Target Market Does

When I first created my Boost Business With Your Own Ezine system, I wouldn't say I was an expert on ezines by far. But by studying the topic in depth to create my own ezine, I'd weeded through all the junky information to get to the good stuff, and I wanted to share it.

You'll find you can make quite a good living just teaching people how to get started in something. (You don't have to be the end-all wizard of the topic.)

2. You've Done What You're Teaching Others to Do

One client of mine, whom I'll call "Pat", teaches real estate investing. She wanted to create a high priced mentorship program of her own, but was nervous about it. She didn't feel right charging a lot of money for her personal time and advice, which meant deep down she wasn't confident in what she was teaching.

I asked her, "Did you make a million dollars investing in real estate?" She said yes. "Then just show them what you did," I replied. "Are you confident in that?" Her answer was a resounding "YES!" Once she realized she'd simply be teaching what she herself had already done, it eliminated her nervousness, made her sales much easier, and she was comfortable charging a hefty (and well deserved) fee.

3. You've Been Quoted on Your Topic in the Media

Sometimes the cart comes before the horse, and a brush with the media IS what makes you seen as an expert. A cosmetic surgeon friend of mine was recently a guest on a Los Angeles television show, and he now proudly promotes that fact in his ads, brochures, and office displays.

When I was interviewed by The Wall Street Journal on the subject of small business email marketing, you can be sure I added that to my bio as soon as I got off the phone!

4. You've Written a Book or Articles on the Subject

Nothing says "expert" like writing a book or by getting your name "out there" via articles. When you put a pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and simply share what you know, no matter how simple the information seems to you, people instantly view you as an authority figure. All you have to do is put yourself out there.

A friend of mine recently chose a financial planner based on the fact that he was a published author. "After all, he wrote the book on it!" she said. In her eyes, that sealed the deal, and she was happy to pay more for his services without question.

5. You SAY You Are the Expert!

I dubbed myself "The Ezine Queen" several years ago, simply because it had a ring to it. I had no idea at the time how much that would help me get famous and be remembered.

Did you know that Muhammad Ali became known as "The Greatest" because Ali himself said it? Yep -- he just kept saying it, and then eventually so did the media!

So if you have a good moniker in mind, go for it.

The Bottom Line... It's up to YOU.

Remember this: Your prospects, clients, and customers will virtually always accept the positioning that YOU choose for yourself and present to others.

So, whatchya waiting for? : )

© 2005-2006 Alexandria K. Funny how we see the Net as its own entity instead of just another marketing channel.

When I meet people and they say they're going to start an "Internet business", I get worried. It's as if that's all they need to know -- not what they're selling or who their customers are. (I mean, when faxes first came out, did you hear people saying they were just starting a "fax business"? Not really.)

The Internet is just one type of media that can sell for your business, and it follows a sales cycle like any other. It's not magic ... it's a process.

But once you WORK that process, it CAN work like magic!

So let's look at the five basic parts of the Internet sales cycle:

1. Collect Leads

Who are you looking for? Your answer should match your ideal client or customer. (Please don't say that's "everybody"!) Do you market to women? Men? What ages? What professions? Certain areas of the country or world? What publications do they read? What interests do they have?

The answers to these questions will help you determine where and how you can find these folks. There are tons of ways to get leads online: search engines, pay-per-click ads, banner ads, articles, blogs, directories, and other types of advertising and promotions.

2. Get Them in Your Funnel

Once you've found who you're looking for, you need to get them in your "sales funnel". On the Internet, that means get them on your list. The best way to make this easy is to offer a free ezine or e-course.

On your website, getting visitors on your list should be your #1 objective! Why? Up to 99% of your first-time visitors will not buy from you or even contact you. They'll take a quick look and then click away, and you've lost them forever. These people are already valuable prospects -- they took the time to find your site and are interested in the subject matter or products you deal with. Does your home page or landing page give the visitor a bazillion choices? If so, ditch the clutter and give them a compelling invitation to sign up for your ezine or e-course.

3. Follow Up

Marketing studies have always shown that your prospects need to be exposed to your message at least 9 times before they'll take action! (Some say it takes even more times on the Internet.)

In traditional sales, real people had to follow up with their prospects via live meetings, phone calls, or postal mailings... over and over and over. What a lot of work! But the Internet makes all this easy, instant, practically free, and ... automatic.

This is where your ezine or e-course works like a charm, following up for you automatically. In fact, with many of the programs available today, you can schedule email messages up to two years away! It's like putting your marketing on auto-pilot, so you can just "set it and forget it"!

4. Close the Sale

The goal of your ezine or e-course should be to drive the reader to buying what you have. Of course you're also providing useful content and information -- that's why they got on your list, and that's why they'll stay on your list. But your underlying objective is to make more sales.

Most people make the mistake of trying to sell from the actual email. That is, drive them straight from the email to taking out their wallet. This is usually not effective for two reasons: 1) you don't have the room in an email to fully explain what you're selling and demonstrate its value to the prospect, 2) it can turn people off who aren't ready to buy yet, and you'll lose those prospects from your list.

The idea of the email is to get them excited about your offering and to get them to CLICK.

Once they click, they're taken to a sales page that you set up specifically for that product or service you're promoting. It's THERE that the prospect will get the full scoop on how great it is, why they need it, how much it costs, how to order, etc.

5. Upsell, and Upsell Again

Here's the biggest mistake I made when I started to sell my first information product online (Boost Business With Your Own Ezine): It was the ONLY product I had to offer for 2 whole years! So once anyone bought it, I had nothing else in my funnel to sell them. (Marketers also call this having a "back end" product.) That meant I had to work extra hard at finding new prospects all the time.

Smart salespeople know it's much easier to sell to people who have already bought from you than to constantly go out and find new prospects.

I finally realized I already had thousands of valuable customers who knew, liked, and trusted me. They'd already purchased a product from me that they were happy with. So I learned more about WHAT ELSE they wanted.

That's when I began churning out valuable new products and programs that my customers ate up like crazy. And that strategy took me from sales of less than 5,000 dollars a month to these days averaging 50,000 dollars a month!

Now, that didn't happen overnight! In fact, I recommend starting with ONE product like I did. It makes learning this entire process much easier, and your results will come faster. Once you get the system down, you can start adding more valuable offerings to your prospects and customers.

Learn It, Work It, Live It

Pretty simple, yes? Based on this model, you may see the missing links in your own Internet sales cycle. Have patience, keep learning, fill in these gaps, and you'll start to see the magic work for you.

© 2005-2006 Alexandria K. Brown

Online entrepreneur Alexandria K. Here's 10 Ways to Be More Productive

Ah, working at home sweet home... Visions of leisurely days, conference calls in comfy sweatpants, increased productivity with fewer interruptions. But the distinctions between work life and home life soon blur. You really should throw some laundry in the wash before you write that proposal. You have an hour before a meeting: Should you balance your books or clean the kitchen? And remember to call that client back right after you empty the cat box.

Welcome to the real world of the home office: unforeseen distractions, a lack of structured time, and sometimes a perceived loss of identity. But don't give up the dream just yet! By putting into place a few simple ideas, you can reap more of the rewards of staying home-bound. Based on my experiences and those of my clients, here are 10 simple ways to help you stay on track.

1. Separate Your Space.

Keep a separate, distinct work area in your home. Very important. (This is especially difficult if you're living and working in a shoebox apartment, like I was when I started my business in New York City!) If you don't have a separate room, at least define an area, and know that when you're in it, you're in "work mode."

2. Structure Your Time.

As your business and personal time mesh, it's more important than ever to structure your day. For example, if you regularly take a walk or go to the gym, try to do it every day at the same time. Value that personal appointment with yourself -- even when you're very busy. It will actually help you keep your business on track! I like to get up early and work until 1 pm, then I take a few hours off to enjoy lunch and go to the gym or jog on the beach. Then I'm back at my desk at 5:00 until who knows when!

3. Outsource All You Can.

When I began my business, I made the mistake of doing all my own administrative work. Whenever you start thinking, "Well I can just do that myself," STOP. Streamline your business, making everything as automatic as possible. Use outside services to stay focused on your *real work*. Get accounts with an overnight delivery service, messenger service, errand service, bookkeeper, etc. Save your time and energy for your brilliant ideas! (Learn more about hiring a virtual assistant (VA) at www.ezinequeen.com/assistanttele.htm)

4. Use Technology to Your Advantage.

In-person meetings are very valuable when appropriate, but schedule them sparingly. Try to do most of your business via phone, fax, and e-mail using the best equipment you can afford. For most of us, when we're out of the office, we're not bringing in the bacon! So it's important that you can communicate flawlessly from where you are. PLEASE do us all a favor and get separate lines/services for your phone, fax, and Internet! No one likes getting a busy signal or having to call first before faxing.

Get separate lines for home and business, or ask your phone company about getting "distinctive ring". Also, voicemail is better than an answering machine, because if you're on an important call and don't want to be disturbed, other callers can still leave you a message.

5. Group Your Errands.

Try to group your meetings and errands together to minimize your out-of-office time. Make a list in the morning of all the outside tasks you need done for the day, and attempt to complete them in one fell swoop. Even better, do what I used to do and designate just one day a week as your "blitz" day for errands and meetings. Plus, then you only need to get dressed up one day a week! : ) (Nowadays I use an errand service to run around for me.)

6. Stay Focused.

Make your workspace off-limits to other roommates or family members when you're working. For you animal lovers, this may go for pets as well. (My cat Francine gets extremely jealous when I'm not giving her complete attention!) Keep all personal paperwork such as bills, magazines, and to-do lists out of sight, so they won't distract you from your work projects.

7. Beware of Yappers.

Many of your friends and family will be immediately delighted when they learn that you're now home-officing. They picture you lounging on the couch, eating potato chips, and waiting for their calls. When they call you simply to chat, politely remind them that you're working, and ask them if you can call them back after your day is over. It may take them a while, but they'll eventually get the idea.

8. Work With Your Moods.

Keep track of your moods and productivity compared with the time of day. For example, if you find you're more alert in the morning, use this time to make important calls and do your creative work. Take advantage of your natural cycles. If you feel better after an afternoon nap, go for it! (I'm a BIG proponent of the catnap. In fact, I may start a support group.)

9. Suit Yourself.

To bring out your best work, make your environment perfect for YOU. How do you work best? With plenty of breaks, or with no interruptions? In silence, or with some light music in the background? On a cushy couch and coffee table, or at a business desk in an ergonomic chair? (My friends thought I was nuts when I spent $750 on my Herman Miller Aeron chair, but they quickly understood why I did once they sat in it! It will last forever and my spine thanks me every day.)

Also, find some places you can do work when you need a change of scenery. How about the library, the park, or your neighborhood coffee shop? When I need to do serious reading, thinking, or editing, I take my work outside to the beach. The sea air, sunshine, and soothing waves help me think much more clearly.

10. Break for People.

Feeling sluggish, lonely, or moody? Arrange for at least one social break during the week. Schedule breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even just coffee with a client, vendor, or friend. Join a business networking group, or sign-up for social activities such as dance class or recreational sports league. Don't go into hermit mode -- it can be self-destructive!

© 1999-2006 Alexandria K. Brown

Online entrepreneur Alexandria K. Here is your chance to learn from one of the gurus.

Now, for day one:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today I'm going to tell you how to increase the kind of web
site traffic your business really needs...

AND build your crediblity...

AND improve your ranking in the search engines...

AND get your customers talking to others about you...

... all with a simple four-step process that won't cost you
a single dime.

Sound too good to be true? It's not!

Let me give you a quick rundown of the plan before we dive in:

1. You're going to find a handful of keywords that the
ideal visitor to your site would use to search for
your product

2. You're going to plug those keywords into your web site

3. Then you're going to write a SHORT article that
contains those same keywords

4. And finally, you'll distribute your content all over
the web and get people passing your information on
to other people who will be interested in what you
have to offer

You'll be surprised how quickly and easily you can get this
strategy going -- AND how fast you'll see an impact on your
traffic numbers when you put yourself on the radar of people
who are looking for what you provide.

Let's check out the first step in a little more detail...

--------------------------------------------------------

STEP ONE: Set up your web site for maximum "searchability"!

--------------------------------------------------------

If you haven't taken the time to...

* figure out the keywords your potential customers might
be using to search for your product

AND

* place them throughout the copy on your site

... your traffic is going to be sluggish right off the bat.

How are the people who really want your information supposed
to find you?

When I tell people that they've missed an important step in
their traffic-building strategy, they always ask me: how are
you supposed to figure out the right keywords for your web
site?

Here are the two tools I recommend to help them with the job:

* Yahoo Search Marketing's Keyword Selector Tool
( http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion )
is a good place to start your investigation. You just
type in a word or term you think people in your market
might search for, and the Keyword Selector Tool will
tell you how many people searched for that particular
term in Yahoo Search Marketing over the last month.

It will also show you a list of related words and
phrases, and tell you how many times people typed those
terms into the free search engines over the last month.

This is a great way to find out how many people may be
searching for information to solve a particular problem,
and give you a picture of the demand for your product
on the Web. But best of all, it gives you tons of ideas
for keywords that you might never have thought of.

Once you've generated a list of useful keyword ideas, you're
ready to dig in and do some serious research with Wordtracker.

* Wordtracker ( http://www.wordtracker.com ) goes into more
depth to show you not only what people are searching for
online, but also how many other web sites are competing
for the same audience.

Basically, it keeps a record of how many times a
particular keyword or phrase was searched during the
past 90 days across the Web.

When you enter the keyword phrases your market is
searching for, you search the Wordtracker database of
over 330 million searches (or "queries").

You're looking for search terms that are popular, but
don't have too many sites competing for them.

You can also pop all of this detailed information into
useful reports that help you determine which keywords
and phrases will bring you the most traffic.

To check out Wordtracker and get a step-by-step guide
to the process, just head to:

http://www.marketingtips.com/wordtracker

and click "Tour" on the navigation bar.

Wordtracker is a paid service, but you can sign up for a
day for under $8.00 and a week for under $27.00. It's a
great investment.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Derek Gehl specializes in teaching real people how to start profitable Internet businesses that make $100,000 to $2.5 Million (or more) per year. Who knows, I may have time left over!Hank and Dothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02980035818652281710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12558853.post-1153186402473782792006-07-17T21:31:00.000-04:002006-08-04T21:58:47.590-04:00"Three E-zine Alternatives You May Not Have Considered"After my live talks, I always get a few people who say to me, "You know, publishing an e-zine sounds great, but I just don't think I have the time to do it on an ongoing basis." Or, "I'm not sure if I'll have enough content to publish an e-zine."

If this is your case, you may want to consider one of these e-zine alternatives. These can still help you achieve your goal of establishing credibility, staying in touch with your prospects, and capturing your Web site visitors.

For the first two alternatives, you'll need an e-mail autoresponder. This is like a fax-on-demand system that sends out e-mails automatically when others request them. (I recommend QueenCart.com, which has a FREE 30-day trial.)

The great thing about autoresponders is that you can set the timing of a series ahead of time. For example, you can schedule message 1 to go out immediately once a person signs up for the list. Message 2 could follow two weeks later. Message 3 would follow two weeks after that. Get the idea?

ALTERNATIVE 1: THE "EVERGREEN" NEWSLETTER

If you don't foresee yourself writing fresh new content every week or month that you publish, why not make your newsletter "evergreen?"

This means that you write all your content ahead of time, and none of it can be time-sensitive. That is, it should be just as relevant today as it would be a year from now.

Evergreen e-zines are brilliant and easy to do. Here's how it works: Suppose you want to publish a short tip every week. That means you'd need 52 tips for a year's worth of content. Once you had these written, you'd just set them up on your autoresponder and tell it when you want them sent out. (For this example, it would be day 1, day 7, day 14, etc. -- each reader would get a message every week.)

It's important to realize that when you use a sequential autoresponder, these are sent as a SERIES. That means everyone who signs up goes through the series in order, no matter when they sign up. For example, let's say you publish a weekly tip like in the example above. If I sign up today, I start with tip #1. And in 10 weeks, I'll be on tip #10. But if Suzy Q signs up 10 weeks from today, she starts with tip #1 just like I did. Get it?

[BONUS TIP: You don't have to write your entire series before you begin! Just stay one tip ahead of the first person who signs up for your series. : )]

ALTERNATIVE 2: THE MINI E-MAIL COURSE OR REPORT

These are very popular right now. You simply create several e-mails' worth of content to spread out over a certain amount of days, and set them up on your autoresponder.

Many sites offer 7-day courses or reports, and quite frankly, many of them are awful. So here's a chance for YOU to stand out. Make sure yours offers really useful or interesting content that's more helpful than salesy.

For example, say you're a small business coach. You could offer a course called "5 Ways to Make This Your Most PROFITABLE Year Ever!" Just sit down and list the 5 ways, then write a few paragraphs of copy under each.

Then write one final sales message that you'll add on to the end of the series as the 6th message. This should be a friendly invitation encouraging the reader to call you for a consultation, buy your book, sign up for your workshop, etc.

Paste all the messages into an autoresponder series, set the timing to what you want (e.g. every day or every few days), and voila -- you've got an e-mail course!

ALTERNATIVE 3: PROMOTIONS ONLY

If you offer products on your site that don't lend themselves well to creating related content, just offer what you've got!

Give your visitors the chance to rece1ve special offers that will save them money at your site. The trick to high sign-up rates is to make them feel as if they'll be part of an exclusive group. Use words like "special, exclusive, limited, VIP, first looks, discounts, savings, club, and members-only."

For example, one site that I frequent sells discounted designer clothes and handbags. (Hooray!) During my last visit, they invited me to sign up for "discounts, exclusive offers, and first looks." I jumped at the opportunity!

Don't underestimate your visitors' interest -- many of them WILL sign up for e-mail offers if you politely extend the invitation and make them feel special.

Just make sure not to overdo your messages to this crowd. Keep your blasts to a maximum of once a week. Otherwise your readers will get irritated and may unsubscribe.

2003-2006 Alexandria K. Could it be you are overlooking a major source?

by Alexandria K. Brown, “The E-zine Queen”
You're probably familiar with e-mail signature (or "sig") files — they're the few lines of contact information that many of us put at the bottom of every e-mail we send. Most e-mail software programs allow you to create and use sig files — even the newer versions of AOL.

I've heard some people who don't use sig files defend their position by saying, "All my clients know my info — I don't need to remind them with every e-mail." Stop! You're missing a perfect opportunity to promote your business, as well as do your clients and prospects a favor.

When you think about how many e-mails you actually send a day, it's probably more than you realized! Some people send over 100 a day. That's a lot of mail — and a lot of chances to slip in your own subtle marketing messages.

Sig Files Put You at Their Fingertips
People love it when you make information easy to find. Sure, your clients have your phone number somewhere, but they'll really appreciate it when they can grab your number right from an e-mail they're looking at. In fact, e-mail is such a part of our lives now, that if someone needs your phone number quickly, she may be more likely to grab it off your latest e-mail than to dig up your business card. (Don't underestimate this occurrence — there are many disorganized people in the world!)

Also, if people want to put your info into their contact management software (Outlook, ACT, Palm, etc.), they can simply copy and paste it right from your sig file.

Good Sig Files Tell Strangers What You Do
As a former co-chair of New York's Women in Communications Inc. (WICI), I booked speakers for our monthly cocktail events, conducting most of this work via e-mail. The speakers I corresponded with only knew me as a representative of WICI; they had no idea what I did for a living. But one woman, after spotting my sig file, promptly wanted to learn more about my copywriting services. She then hired me for a $5,000 project. Thank you, sig file!

Sig Files Are Ready to Travel
E-mails are forwarded all the time. You never know where yours may end up, and one of the recipients may be very interested in your service or product. I learned this when I got a call from a prospect in Israel. A colleague of hers here in the U.S. had forwarded her an interesting issue of my newsletter. She learned about my services and got my phone number from the sig file at the bottom.

Sig Files Are a Great Promotional Tool
Now, let's move beyond the obvious stuff. Think of your sig file as a little messenger who speaks to everyone you send an e-mail to. What do you want him to say? Do you have great news? A new product or service? A free newsletter or report? Let us know via your sig file!

Your Sig File Checklist
Here are several items to consider putting into your sig file. CAUTION: Do not attempt to insert them all! Choose what's most important for you and your business.

your name and title
your company name
your company tagline, or a short phrase that describes what your company does
your address
your phone, cell phone, and/or pager numbers
your fax number
your e-mail address (sometimes people can't get it directly or quickly from your actual e-mail)
your Web URL (be sure to include the "'http://" prefix to ensure it will translate as a hyperlink on most e-mail programs)
Now, also consider putting promotional info in your sig file, such as:

an offer for a free report or product you offer
an offer for a free consultation or trial offer
a company announcement (new client, new product, award won, etc.)
a hyperlink to your latest press release, article, or Web site feature
an invitation to subscribe to your free e-newsletter
In the interest of space and your reader's time, keep your offer or announcement to one or two sentences only. (Tip: Always throw in the word "free" when possible. It's everyone's favorite word!)

Bonus: Most e-mail software programs allow you to create and keep several signatures on file, so you can change them easily and often. This makes it a cinch to switch your messages weekly or even daily, and maintain ones for different businesses.

Choose What's Important to You
Of course, it's possible to get carried away and include too much information. We don't need random quotes that have no relation to your business, cute illustrations made up of keyboard characters, or your weekend phone number in the Hamptons.

Try to keep your sig file to a maximum of eight lines. More than that will overwhelm the reader, and it will look silly if your sig files are always longer than your e-mail messages!

Here's a good example:

Jane Smith, President
Smith I.T. Consulting
'Take a Byte Out of Network Headaches'
ph: 800-321-0000 fax: 212-321-0001
jane@smithitconsulting.com
*Visit http://www.smithitconsulting.com and get your FREE report on the top 10 most common computer network problems and how to solve them!*

Notice that "Jane" opted not to give her mailing address here, in order to use the space for her tagline and an invitation to receive her free report. It's all up to you. If your customers frequently need your mailing address, then you should include it. (I don't include it in mine, since 99% of my work is done via e-mail.) Decide what bits of info are most valuable to keep, and use the rest of the space for a unique message or promotion!

One Last Thing: Make Sure We "Get" What You Do
I've seen some seemingly complete sig files that still leave me wondering, "Thanks for all the info, but what do you DO?" We all know what IBM and Kodak do, but the whole world doesn't know what your business does (yet). For now, it's your job to help us all learn. Include a tagline that describes what your company does or a short phrase that helps us understand. Brown, "The E-zine Queen"

[NOTE: Some words in this article have been disguised to avoid triggering sp^m filters.]

I don't know about you, but I secretly love watching infomercials. I enjoy dissecting how they sell, how they get people excited, how they entice people to take action now and pick up the phone and order something they completely don't need!

As you know, these programs always offer a huge bonus or multiple bonuses for people who buy. Often the bonus is worth even more than the featured product itself. You know what I mean... they're selling you a little vegetable chopper, but they also throw in a blender, toaster, and coffeemaker!

Why do they do this? Because it makes the offer completely irresistible. The prospect thinks, "Jeez, I'd be crazy not to buy this right now!"

The same strategy works extremely well online too. Using BONUSES is also a great way to add more value to your program or package, enabling you to raise your price point. And you don't have to spend any money creating your bonus products if you don't want to.

Here are 7 ideas to get you started offering a bonus ASAP:

1. Special Report
Think of some information that relates to what you're offering that would be very helpful for the customer. Exciting titles with numbers are shown to work best, like "31 Easy and Fast Ways to Get More Clients" or "5 Mistakes Most Families Make When Choosing a Puppy." Write it in Microsoft Word, format it so it looks nice, and then use Adobe Acrobat to save it as a PDF file for easy downloading. (Be sure to promote your business and website in there too - remember it may get passed around.)

2. Resource List
Compile a list of your personally recommended resources, websites, books, and vendors that are related to your product or service. You can set this up as a PDF file as well, or create a password-protected area of your website that customers and clients can access. Example: One bonus that comes with my Boost Business With Your Own Ezine system is the "Ezine Queen Private Resource Library." It's simply a select collection of links to websites and tools that can help my customers grow their lists and run their online businesses.

3. Checklist
Are there any checklists that would be a good tie-in to what you offer? That help people do what you're teaching them to do, better or easier? Example: I have a program called "Insider Secrets to Making M0ney With Teleseminars," and one of the bonuses is the checklist that I myself use when I plan any teleseminar event! My customers love it because it makes it super easy for them.

4. Collection of Articles
Hopefully you write articles or tips on a regular basis for your own ezine or newsletter, and you may even have them posted at your website as well. Why not package your favorites into a PDF document and title it your "Top 10" or "Best of" collection?

5. Action Guide
Look at the principles, strategies, and tactics you teach in your program, and put together a separate guide to help the user do assignments, stay on track, and document her progress. (Some marketing experts say calling it an "action guide" or "success journal" is better than "workbook," because "work" can subconsciously deter people.)

6. Audio Class
Record a 60-minute audio introduction or orientation to your program. If you already offer a free introductory teleclass or do live speeches, you can simply record that. Offer it online as an MP3 download, or even better, let people listen right from the website. (You can see exactly how I set mine up here.)

7. Consultation With You
A consultation is a great bonus to offer, for several reasons. First, it lets you get to know your customers better and hear the questions they ask and issues they face. This will help you further improve your products and services to offer what they want. Second, it's a great opportunity to upsell these folks to a higher-priced program at the end of the call. For example, if they enjoyed the advice you provided on the call, they may be interested in your six-month coaching program. Don't fear that everyone who buys your product will actually take advantage of your free consultation - they won't. When I got started, I offered a free 30-minute consultation to all purchasers of my Boost Business ... system. I estimate that less than 20% of the people who bought it actually scheduled a call with me.

Digital or Physical?

I'm a big fan of digital bonuses because they cost nothing to create and there's no packaging or shipping involved. But of course you can also go with physical bonuses, especially if you're already shipping the main product to the customer anyway. My Boost Business... system is a physical package that we ship, so we add in a 2-CD program that teaches people how to get more sales from their ezine. It's simply a recording of a great teleseminar I did about two years ago.

If you're offering printed material as a bonus, don't go crazy spending a ton of money making it look great. "Good" is okay! A simple report that you have printed and bound cheaply at a copy shop is fine. Remember that people are paying you for the information you provide.

What's most important is the cover -- even if you only produce a digital report or audio product, having a graphic of it will help increase your response and make you look more professional. I use and recommend Killer Covers.

Give Your Bottom Line a Bonus This Month

So get YOUR bonuses in gear! Make a note of how your sales have been so far, and then add some bonuses and watch the numbers rise.

© 2005-2006 Alexandria K. In fact, an average of 99% of your first time visitors to your sales pages will leave without buying or even contacting you.

But don't get upset. Get richer!

Use what's called an exit pop. Now, I know pop-ups can be incredibly annoying. But they WORK. Almost all the people I know doing over $1 million each year online use exit pops in strategic ways to seriously boost their bottom lines.

Here are four ways to generate revenue from people leaving your website, using exit pops:

1. Get them on your list.

Because most people will not buy from you at first visit, it's extremely important to have a way to follow up with them. After all, they're already interested in what you have. That's why they're at your site! So these people are worth their weight in gold to you.

But how to follow up? Well, here's where your ezine comes in. Your ezine list is your key to ongoing revenues and generating income on demand.

One of the best places to get people on your list is actually as they're leaving. It's kind of like the "Columbo" strategy of your website. (What did he used to say on the way out the door? Something like, "By the way..." or "Oh, one more thing...")

These exit pops often work BETTER than a pop-up that appears as soon as someone lands on your site. Why? You give the visitor a chance to get to know you first, before you ask them for their email. Let them take a look around, grow to trust you and your website.

One of my exit pops says, "Congrats... Y0u've W0n a FREE Subscription!" It has an eye-catching graphic representing my ezine and gives a raving description of it as well. Also the opt-in form is right in the box, which you always want. Don't make folks have to click around to sign up. If you'd like to see what mine looks like, go to EzineQueen.com. You'll see it when you leave.

From what other marketers are sharing, the "congrats" exit pop is one of the all-time best performing exit pops for building your list.

2. Ask them WHY they're leaving.

Why not find out the reason they're leaving in the first place? For example, one of my exit pops says, "WAIT - Can I ask your advice? Please tell me the biggest reason you're leaving without giving my 'Boost Business With Your Own Ezine' system a try. I'd really appreciate it, and your answer is completely anonymous. Thanks."

I looked for the most popular answers and then made some adjustments to my sales page. For example, several people said, "I don't have a website yet." So I revised my sales copy to include the fact that you don't need a website to get started publishing an ezine.

Knowing this kind of information will help you make a LOT more sales down the line!

There's a great tool that makes doing these exit surveys super easy, and you can see a demo at their site: www.askmyezine.com

3. Offer a down-sell or alternative.

Yep, that's right. Offer me something for less m0ney. After all, I'm leaving anyway, with my wallet! Example: My "Boost Business With Your Own Ezine" system is a physical product, but for several months I tested a down-sell of a lower-priced digital version with fewer bonuses. I also configured the exit pop to appear only if the person had been on my sales page for at least 30 seconds, so I knew they were serious about the product and not just on my page to take a peek.

The tactic did pretty well, making me about an extra thousand bucks a month that otherwise I would not have gotten! That won't make me r1ch, but it sure helps cover my take-out sushi habit. I'll be testing some other down-sells like this one too. (Remember, it's all about trying new things and seeing how they work for YOU. That's what's so fun about Internet marketing!)

4. Send them to someone else's site.

Really! But not just anyone's site. Send them to a site with products or services that are related to yours, AND that will give you commission on any referred sales! That's called an affiliate program, and there are millions of companies doing it on the web. If you don't know of any websites that are related to yours and have an affiliate program, search the two biggest directories: ClickBank and Commission Junction.

Just remember to check out any company before you start sending people there. You don't want to taint your reputation by sending folks to a site with shoddy products or lousy service.

I've made several thousand dollars per month simply by referring my readers and web visitors to other websites. It's just one of my tactics. But some internet marketers even make ALL their revenues with affiliate programs - they don't sell any of their own products! It really works.

Don't Get Blocked!

It's a fact that almost half of all Internet users now have some type of pop-up blocker.

The good news is, whenever a new technology comes out, there's one close behind it that will make it obsolete.

There are several scripts for making pop-up boxes that cannot be blocked. My favorite that I use right now is a service that requires no programming and has dozens of fun designs you can choose and just type in your message -- www.QueenPopups.com

Just remember to please use these tools ethically! Don't drive people crazy with 10 different boxes appearing as they leave.

Choose one, use it strategically, and test, test, test. I promise if you try just ONE of these tactics above, you'll see some extra sales!

© 2005-2006 Alexandria K. Brown

Online entrepreneur Alexandria K. But, putting it off until tomorrow is not the solution. Procrastination could cost you in the long run. If you follow some simple steps, starting a home base business can be less complicated.

1. SET YOUR GOALS. If you don't know where you want to go, you will never get there. Imagine where you would like your business to be this time next week, next month, even next year. Dream. Now do everything in your power to get there.

2. SET TIME FOR YOUR BUSINESS. You must invest time into any business and this is also true with your home based business. It will not just magically happen. You can not expect a free ride. You must work at it. If you do not have the time to invest in your business, you will not succeed. Set aside ample time each day to really work your business and soon you will begin to reap the rewards.

3. SET YOUR BUDGET. You are the only person that knows how much you can invest in your home based business. Do NOT get carried away in this area. It is very easy to "sign up" for everything you see. Start small if you have to. You do not want to start your home based business with the frustration of added expenses. Be certain you have the resources to cover the expenses you incur. Stay within your budget.

4. BE REALISTIC. In all likelihood you won't become a millionaire over night. Gosh, wouldn't that be wonderful. But you can be pretty certain that won't happen. Don't let this discourage you or make you decide to put off building your business until "tomorrow". It takes time to build any business. The sooner you begin, the sooner you will reach you goal!

5. KNOW YOUR LIMITATIONS. Just because you aren't a computer whiz, doesn't mean you aren't capable of learning. There is help available. Search the web. Ask questions. We have found people willing to build web sites for FREE! If you aren't comfortable or unsure of how to do something, by all means ask for assistance.

6. JOIN FORUMS. You will find some very helpful information. Other entrepreneurs, just as yourself, are always eager and willing to help in any way they can. You will find so many friendly, helpful people! Get ideas and advice from some of the best on-line "gurus" in the forums. Don't hesitate to ask your questions. Remember everyone had to start at ground zero.

7. LAUGH AT YOURSELF. It sure beats crying. In all likelihood you will make some BIG mistakes. Laugh about it. You aren't the first and you won't be the last. Learn from your errors. Don't quit. When you do have your successful business, you will also have gained a storehouse of knowledge and advice for the people following after you. What are you waiting for? If others are doing this, you can too! Get started today. Don't wait for tomorrow.

Copyright © 2006 by Hank and Dot Stevens
About the author:
Hank and Dot Stevens enjoy helping other people obtain their dream of financial freedom by working from home.
