I feel like this was the product of built up

ideas from years of listening to music and years of throwing out song

ideas because they seem too quiet or simple. this was a way of
focusing

on those ideas and giving them the production and treatment they

deserved. Joey had a Kris Kristofferson song he played me that we
were

like.. "Yeah!". I also got really into Townes Van Zandt last year.

XO,

Tick & Angioplasty

Churchill + Autotune = <3

We here at BMJ have a serious Tick Tick appreciation in the works. I bring you Mario Paint the Covers Album:

Radiohead - Paranoid Android

Guns 'N Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine

RAT COPS!

RATS COPS Who are these guys? Where did they come from? Who cares. This raw romp of an LP tears a hole through 2009's perfunctory releases from bloated bands, ahem -U2, Bruce- ahem.

The accomanying press release sheds little light on the enigmatic Condo Fucks:

Legendary New London, CT trio the Condo Fucks returned to the stage last March after a long absence from the Tri-State Area's concert circuit. A secretive Hoboken rehearsal was recorded and is being released March 24, 2009 by Matador as the LP/CD, Fuckbook. Eschewing such Condo Fucks originals as ‘Fuckin’ Gary Sandy’ and ‘Let’s Get Rid Of New Haven’, the trio – Georgia Condo (drums), Kid Condo (guitar), and James McNew (bass) – instead tear through covers of The Small Faces, Richard Hell, Beach Boys, Electric Eels, Troggs, Flaming Groovies and Slade classics in the style that previously won them so much acclaim from the Nutmeg State’s music journalists and radio programmers all those years ago. In the go-go 1990s, the Condo Fucks released 4 titles on the Matador label, some of which were prominently advertised on the inner sleeve of Yo La Tengo’s I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One. Sadly, these titles are long out of print and we are unable to provide the media with copies. With Fuckbook, a full tour of major Connecticut nightspots is planned upon release.

The First Condo Fucks Single "What’cha Gonna Do About It?" can be downloaded gratis from Matador's website here. The rest of the album might be easily found by googling: "condo fucks fuckbook mediafire". Not that we endorse that sort of thing, publically.

Sometimes I hate our culture...

Top LP's of 2008: #27 Crystal Stilts "Alight of Night"

Sometimes people say stupid shit. A contentious claim perhaps to Sunset Rubdown progrock fanboys, but it's nice to listen to Boeckner's guitar work and vocals freed from the stays and moorings of Krug's banal, counterpointal lyricals about "creatures/ Who eat their babies/ And I wonder if they stop To think about the taste."

Phosphorescent's "To Willie,"

In 1975 Willie Nelson recorded the album To Lefty From Willie, 10 songs in which Nelson pays homage to Lefty Frizell, reinterpreting his favorites from the Frizzell catalog and stamping them with his own unique voice, reshaping them into his own new classics.

Now Phosphorescent has done the same for Willie Nelson by bringing us To Willie. Here, Matthew Houck has selected 11 of his favorite Willie Nelson songs and does much more than just simply cover them. He has not selected the greatest hits, but rather digs deep, offering renditions of hidden Nelson gems and lost classics. The songs collected here seem cracked from Phosphorescent's proprietary mold with Matthew Houck's unmistakable voice leading the way. They feel lived in, they feel weathered and they feel just like Phosphorescent.

Without question, those hard-living months on the road greatly impacted the To Willie sessions. Houck's swagger and confidence shines through like never before – on songs like "Reasons to Quit" and "I Gotta Get Drunk" Phosphorescent rumbles with a soulful groove that was a fixture of the live show, but was never touched upon in previous recordings. Recalling the finest moments of the late-'70s work of Waylon Jennings and Nelson himself, Phosphorescent has delivered a glorious hangover of an album: the gentle duet of "It's Not Supposed to be That Way," the hauntingly beautiful choir of "Can I Sleep In Your Arms," and the spacious, synth-heavy "Permanently Lonely" all work to pull this album together as a cohesive statement.

and yes that After all this is 2008. Kanye West seems more concerned with trying to transmogrify himself into Daft Punk than actually spitting verses over beats. One of the best albums of the year in the whitest of rock genres, indie rock, belongs to TV on the Radio. In case you need to see the size of their afros I might direct you here, here or here. Therefore when I read Dan Bolles' column about about Death and Rough Francis I was ecstatic at the prospect of band that could potentially, if they match they're hype, help the "Sasha Frere Joneses" of the world get with the times.
Needless to say Rough Francis did not disappoint. Saturday night at the Monkey Rough Francis left the audience in a sheen of sweat as lead singer Bobby Hackney Jr. held what I assume to be his late uncle Dannis Hackney's portrait aloft. In the middle of this maelstrom, a middle aged woman (possibley Bobby Jr.'s mom) sang every word in the front row, as though watching the ghosts of Detroit in 1974 be exercised in front of her. Cameras snapped the whole show through, and the precedings had the feeling of watching history get etched into solid rock. "Everyone of these songs we're playing tonight was written in Robert and Dannis Hackney's garage in 1974," Bobby said, emotion creeping in. For all the nostalgia imbued moments, musically Rough Francis showed a tightness and a rawness rarely seen in Burlington acts.

The lead guitarist with the white Jazzmaster and the polka dot cuffs tore through overflowing, aching guitar lines looking the whole time like some sort of Kanye-ized version of Robert Johnson cool. Opposite him on stage, was a baby faced Elvis Costello impersonator, legs spread T. Rex style ripping it the fuck up. Rough Francis in true throwback form has no real internet presence, no Myspace page, just adoring accolades. Steve Hazen Williams, who our fact checker notes, is the front man for My First Days on Junk, held down half of the rhythm section with his blistering bass guitar work. After many failed attempts I scrapped the idea of shooting photos of the drummer. No matter what the shutter speed I could not capture him. He was just that fast. Part of me worried about loosing my camera in the tangle of pogo dancing bodies at the foot of the stage, part of me didn't care. If you missed Rough Francis spreading Death throughout Winooski and 242 over the weekend, you've got one more chance to taste Death at <a Continued

Greg Davis wrote the staff here at Burlington Music Journal with even more upcoming shows. You and a friend could go to both for half the cost of the Dark Star Orchestra show at Higher Ground.

first up we have scott goodwin from portland OR. he has been making music for quite a while now, most notably with Bonus. he's doing a short solo tour in october on the east coast and im excited to have him play in burlington. scott makes great minimal psycho-acoustic electronic drone music.

scott goodwin
+
sara-paule koeller
monday, october 6th, 2008

green door studio
18 howard st.
burlington VT

8pm
$5

and we also have the solo debut of sara-paule koeller (of oak). if you were at her recital last spring, you know that SP has a great sense for sound, composition and vibes. itll be a treat to hear her solo explorations.

scott goodwin
http://www.virb.com/scottgoodwin

sara-paule koeller (oak)
http://www.myspace.com/oaksounds

---

and secondly, we have another fantastic acoustic fingerstyle guitar showcase featuring cian nugent, ben reynolds and george stavis, courtesy of the tompkins square record label. if you were at the peter walker, jack rose, glenn jones, james blackshaw, sean smith, christina carter, sean mcmillen shows in the past, you know what to expect. high quality 6 & 12 string guitar instrumentals by the best today.
Cian Nugent is 19 years old, from Ireland. His debut EP is a CDR with six tracks recorded on a 70’s reel-to-reel machine, and the crude nature of it harks back to those early recordings of Davey Graham at Hull University. It even includes a re-working of Buell Kazee’s “Wagoner’s Lad”, famously covered by Bert Jansch.
Ben Reynolds hails from Scotland. “Here Toucheth Blues”, a highlight of 'Imaginational Anthem vol 3', is lilting and elegiac, a bit surprising as his fans are likely more familiar with his angular, raga-charged works. Ben is building a fantastic catalogue of solo recordings (and a multitude of side projects and collaborations), most recently the Solo Guitar/Inner Hills cassette featuring one side acoustic, the other, electric.
George Stavis is a shadowy figure from decades past, seemingly undiminished by time and ripe for re-discovery. He recorded one album for Vanguard in 1969, Labyrinths, subtitled Occult Improvisational Compositions for 5-string banjo and percussion. This LP is the oddest and best banjo album of the period, only rivaled perhaps by fellow 5-stringer Billy Faier’s 1973 Takoma album. Stavis is pictured on the cover wearing a medieval robe and holding a glowing crystal ball. The record is a wonderful devil’s brew of ethnic, old-timey and psychedelics. He returns to the stage for the first time in decades.

george stavis
+
cian nugent
+
ben reynolds

friday, october 10th 2008

firehouse gallery
135 church st.
burlington VT

8pm
$7

http://www.imaginationalanthem.com

cian nugent
http://www.myspace.com/ciannugent

ben reynolds
http://www.myspace.com/benreynoldsmusic

Upcoming (Affordable) Shows, Pt. The Vacant Lots

You could go to all three for less than a perfunctory Rusted Root show recapturing the "glory" of 1994's jam band crossover hit, "Send Me on My Way." The songs was good enough for Ice Age though. Anyways here's the details:

PHIL ELVERUM (of the Microphones) on Saturday, October 11 at the Bakery.
Advance tickets will be $9, and $12 day of show. Tickets will be
available at www.ticktick.org starting next week, as well as at Radio
Bean, Pure Pop, and Battery St Jeans. Comprised of 15 year old Brian Macfadyen Moe Tucker style drumming and Jared Artaud's hollow body Gretch guitar, vocals and some ominous device referred to on the duo's myspace page as the Drone Box. How could anyone not like a band with Chuck Berry, Jesus and Mary Chain and Marcel Duchamp as their top friends on Myspace? Okay perhaps that belies my bias towards any band with minimal Sonics like drumming and raw Velvets style guitar. Certainly The Vacant Lots aren't the only band to try a stripped down drum kit, Television like guitar lines that spill over their banks and a slacker Lou Reed style vocal delivery recently. There's something refreshing about bands eschewing the put as much gear up on stage as possible impulse and returning to the elemental pieces of rock and roll.

Check them out: 16 September 2008 1/2 Lounge Burlington, VT

Affordable Shows This Fall

Those zany Tick Tick kids have a whole slate of fall shows with affordable enough to suit our dire economic times. The name alludes to
a process of constant questing that is part of Arbouretum's raison
d'etre, what Heumann describes as "a sense of religiosity that is not
tied down to a particular moral or ecclesiastical approach, but rather
proto-religious feelings such as awe in the face of something
greater." In this case, that "something greater" is the music itself
and/or the source thereof. Rites...was influenced either obtusely or
more directly (as in the song "Mohammed's Hex and Bounty", based on
"Love with a Few Hairs" by Mohamed Mrabet) by the writer Paul Bowles.
? "There is an effort to 'get to the bottom of things', to peel back a
certain protective veil between an observer perspective and what we
could term naked reality," says Heumann. "We are mostly concerned with
trying to convey the emotional impact of an experience or state of
mind to the listener."
www.myspace.com/arbouretum

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12
MIRACLE FORTRESS (Montreal) and RYAN POWER (Burlington)
At the 5th Element (email julia@ticktick.org for directions)
Doors at 8pm, show at 9pm
$6-$10 donation at the door

MIRACLE FORTRESS
FIVE ROSES is an ode to that dreamy no-man's land of childhood,
swooping from shoegazing wall of sound to beautiful sparse
instrumentals and straight up pop classics. The album was composed,
performed, recorded and mixed entirely by Graham Van Pelt at
Friendship Cove (itself a monument to playground innocence), with even
the album art having been inspired by bed linens from his childhood
home. The album's title comes from the long-standing flour factory
(and its flashing neon sign) that hovers over Friendship Cove and
Griffintown in Montreal.

Despite its decidedly triumphant tone, Five Roses is anything but
light and naïve. Normally churning out banging synth lines in his
other band, Think About Life, or laying down booming hip-hop remixes,
Van Pelt also makes a case for himself as a budding and eclectic
producer on Five Roses—which is as much a homage to late twentieth
century greats like Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney and Brian Eno—as it
is to the whims of youth. But whereas nostalgia might lure you in on
Five Roses (like on perfect pop gems "This Thing About You" and "Maybe
Lately"), Five Roses is also littered with sonic flourishes that stand
up nicely next to boundary-pushing contemporaries. "Blasphemy" starts
off innocently enough, but half-way through transforms into a synthy
post-rock composition reminiscent of fellow genre-breaking Canadians
acts like Caribou or Bell Orchestre; "Beach Baby" and "Hold Your
Secrets to Your Heart" break down with sparse and airy ornaments that
would be right at home on Animal Collective's Sung Tongs; and for all
the album's beautiful vocal harmonies, the lilting instrumental title
track might be the strongest and most moving offering on the record.
www.myspace.com/miraclefortress

RYAN POWER
Really, does this man need any kind of introduction? His ultra-melodic synth compositions pull
from his earliest exposure to the 8-bit soundtracks of the Sega
Genesis video game catalog. But it's not just retro video game music.
Mix in the kitschy Moogy sound of Hot Butter's "Popcorn", the
saturated disco-theatrics of late seventies electro-pop acts like
Sparks and Yellow Magic Orchestra, and a penchant for Eastern European
diminished scales and you've come pretty close to Adventure's
accelerated baroque sound.

Adventure is an advanced, dance-floor friendly take on the music of
early video gaming. Let the epic quest for the master sword begin!
www.myspace.com/adventuresound

FUTURE ISLANDS
FUTURE ISLANDS are a post-wave dance band from North Carolina, now
residing in the fertile "music capital of awesome", Baltimore. Future
Islands play a terse yet passionate music wrought from a stripped back
palette. Gerrit Welmers' cartwheeling synthesizer melodies tumble
across the austere wilderness of William Cashion's post punk bass
pulse, driven ever forward by Eric Murillo's ecstatic feel for rhythm.
www.futureislands.com

NOSEBLEED ISLAND
Joe agresta was born 8/12/1981 in new jersey. then, twenty four years
later, under the guise of mr. island met Dracula at a garage sale. the
two spent the night drinking wine, listening to soul records and
conspiring against systems of capatalism. the next day they built a
robot, moved to pittsburg P.A., and started recording "silly sad
cicuit's dead baby in a jar," their first album together. both Dracula
and mr. island thought it was a failure. at the completion of the
album dracula left the band to become an alchemist. after Dracula's
departure mr. island and robot set to work on writing and recording
songs documenting the formation of the band. during this time mr.
island started looking for other (non-robotic) friends to join the
band, finally inducting Miss Marbles and 11 year old Zbear. one night
while the gang was finishing up the second album, "MORE TALES from the
Blood island" Dracula showed up with lots of beer everyone got drunk
(except Zbear cause he's only 11). During a video shoot robot was hit
by a car; destroying his cardboard body. Three days later mr. island
found a real robot in the trash. a brain transplant was performed.
three months later mr.island, who had recently changed his name to
joey pizza slice after marrying a slice of pizza in a dream, was also
run over, this time by a pickup truck with no driver. the band is
currently recording their next LP "opposite Hitler Mustache" to be
released a limited run of 50 plastic records.
www.myspace.com/nosebleedisland

Not a single tear for the CEOs

        August 18, 2008

Major label executive salaries shrink...

New York Post | Read Full Story >

Music industry executives have lost more than just the power to generate million-album sellers and higher CD sales – gone too are the hefty salaries the free-spending music business used to lavish on their leaders.

For example, Elio Leoni-Sceti, the chief executive of EMI Music, is said to be paid less than $1 million a year plus incentives – which pales in comparison to the $18 million Doug Morris, the CEO of Universal Music Group earned in 2005.

True, Morris has been with UMG for a long time and Universal is twice the size of EMI here in the US, but the difference in pay is still startling. The same is true for executives in all levels of the music business.

“The era of the standard promo guy making $350,000—$700,000 a year is over,” said one source familiar with the situation. “There’s not a lot of million-plus players on the label level outside of the label heads.”

Show Me Your Genitals

Deerhunter

Deerhunter is a band with a blog.
