It was the world's largest country, covering one-sixth of the land area of the world. The Soviet Union was the Communist superpower during the Cold War. This former country was comprised of fifteen constituent republics. Moscow was its capital. The USSR was officially dissolved on December 31, 1991 and broke into fifteen new independent countries.
