Tomahawk Unit Awards of Excellence

Troop 1631 at Colony Bend Elementary was awarded the 2008 Unit of Excellence Award. The 2008 Unit of Excellence Award is presented to units for service, training, and the overall program for the scouts, and the number of trained adults per boy,

Scott Icenhower, an assistant scoutmaster for Troop 1631, the District Advancement Chair, who has served on training teams, and recently completed Woodbadge training,
was also awarded the Tomahawk Award. The Tomahawk Award recognizes volunteers for extraordinary service and dedication to the District.

November 26 Troop Meeting Speaker

We will have County Commissioner James Patterson as a speaker at our Troop Meeting on November 26. He is scheduled to discuss Requirement 5 for the First Class Rank Requirement. Commissioner Patterson has been in office since 1999, and he is a native Texan who grew up in the central Texas town of Normangee. He received his Bachelors Degree from Sam Houston State University and his Masters Degree from the University of Houston. After graduating from Sam Houston State, James moved to Sugar Land and began his career as a teacher and coach at Dulles Junior High School. He taught math and coached there from 1965 through 1968, when he moved to Dulles High School as a math teacher and head basketball coach. In 1975, he became an assistant principal at Dulles High and was named Dulles High School's principal in 1984. In 1992, James was named principal of Elkins High School and remained in that capacity until he retired in 1998.

He is very active is the community specifically helping youth in Fort Bend County. He was named 2007 Humanitarian of the Year by the Rotary Club of Fort Bend County.

All Scouts and parents are welcome and encouraged to come and hear Commissioner Patterson speak.

The board determined that Jamie met all the requirements for advancement to the rank of Eagle Scout and Jamie convinced the board that he had Scout Spirit and would live the Scout Oath and Law every day for the rest of his life. Jamie was advanced to the rank of Eagle Scout.

2007 Popcorn Campaign

It's that time again
It's Popcorn Time! Our Popcorn Kernel is Poonam Bhateja. She will be handing out the sales material on September 17th. All orders are due back October 22nd. Since we have some new members to the Troop, I wanted to make sure that all families understand that all profit from the popcorn is credited to the Scout's account, which can be used to pay for weekend campouts or summer camp. The more a Scout sells, the more he is helping fund his own scouting experience.

The Troop made a decision to not take advantage of the prizes so the scout can receive an additional 5%.

So far we have someone bringing hot dogs, chicken, pie, onions, relish, chips, beef chili, vegetarian chili, and drinks. We still need someone to bring condiments (mustard, mayo, & catsup) and some more desserts.

Remember, we're starting a little earlier, at 6:30 PM, to give everyone more time on the water before it gets dark. REMEMBER TO BRING WATER SHOES AND LIFE JACKETS!!!

Eagle BOR of Chancey Raymond

Troop 1631 convened a Board of Review to evaluate the qualifications of Chancey Raymond for advancement to the rank of Eagle Scout. The Board reviewed Chancey's Eagle application, letters of recommendation, merit badge history, and his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project notebook. The Board then subjected Chancey to an intense interview and determined that Chancey did indeed have Scout Spirit. By unanimous decision the Board advanced Chancey to the rank of Eagle Scout!

Congratulations Chancey on becoming our nation's newest Eagle Scout and welcome to the Eagle's nest!!

July 13-15 Canoeing Campout Info

The July 13-15 campout is a canoeing campout on the mighty Guadalupe River. The only requirement to go is the swimming merit badge. So if you are taking the merit badge at summer camp you are good to go. First sixteen scouts to sign up and include a $25.00 deposit, GO. If you don't make the first sixteen I'll place you on a wait list.

Total cost is $50.00

All,
We are in need of a few volunteers to help with some upcoming events and items. Remember training is provided for all positions. Some of these positions are on-going and some are one-time events. Please let me know if you can help the Troop with some of these tasks.

Scouting for Food – March 31, 2007
This is a coordination role which includes organizing the Scouting for Food day, sending out crews on our routes, coordination with Committee Chair and patrols on the Scouting for Food Day. Also includes coordination of getting food to pantry, so a truck or SUV (or 2 smaller vehicles) will be needed. The coordinator also stays at Colony Bend Elementary on the morning of the 31st to receive and count the items collected.

Recruiting
We currently have a need for parents to help us stay connected to the Packs; some of our new parents would be particularly helpful. Currently we are discussing our upcoming recruiting events like Readyman, den chiefs, inviting packs to campouts, etc. and would welcome some new ideas.

Public Relations
Submit articles to the local media to promote the Troop. Articles will be on Courts of Honor, Eagle Scouts, summer camps, etc. There are copies of previous releases to use as templates. This is also a big help to our recruiting efforts.

May Court of Honor – May 20, 2007
Need a parent to secure a location for our May 2007 Court of Honor. This will be a family picnic, so we will be looking for a park with pavilion or somewhere close that we can have an outdoor Court of Honor and a picnic.

Court of Honor Support
We have a volunteer that is responsible for Courts of Honor; we need a volunteer to help the youth MCs prepare for the ceremony. You would work with the current volunteer (me!) for the first couple of Courts of Honor.

Health & Safety
Maintain the Health forms for the Troop and keep the over the counter medications in the Troop First Aid kit up to date. This could actually be split into 2 positions, one for forms and one for the first aid kit.
