Vogelein release party tomorrow!

Hey Kids!!!

We are less than 24 hours away from our hugely enormous Graphic Novel Release Party celebrating the new Vogelein book from Kalamazoo's own Jane Irwin!

You can be one of the first to get a copy of "Vogelein: Old Ghosts" this Saturday September 29th. Jane is bringing copies of the new book with her, and it might be your only chance to get a hold of a very limited hardcover edition of the new book.

Jane is also making some cupcakes *mmm cupcakes* and we'll have light refreshments to make the evening the kind of huge event that we like to throw at Green Brain Comics.

While you're here, join in a special comic jam. The collaborative improv strips are sure to be unpredictable and might even be as fun to make as they are to read.

ABOUT THE CARTOONISTS

Mikhaela Reid is a cartoonist for the Metro Times whose works has also appeared in The Guardian, The Villager, Chelsea Now, The Phoenix, Bay Windows, In These Times,
Women's eNews, Ms., Funny Times, Campus Progress and Bitch.
In 2006, Reid was named one of the Girls in Government/Feministing
"Real Hot 100" and was featured in the Museum of Comics and Cartoon Art
exhibit "She Draws Comics: A Century of Women Cartoonists." Ted Rall
calls Reid "an insurgent cartoonist: smart, irrepressible and

Masheka Wood grew up in Boston where he was warped by MAD,
Night Flights, Garbage Pail Kids and Tex Avery cartoons. His lettering,
cartoon and illustration work has appeared on MTV and in The New Standard.
Wood's cartoons were featured in a recent exhibit in Jackson State
University, "Other Heroes: African American comics creators,
characters, and archetypes." He is a 2007 Glyph Comics Award nominee

Dearborn's Honorable Mayor John B. O'Reilly Jr. will be at Green Brain Comics
to cut the ribbon and officially start Free Comic Book Day on Saturday May 5th.
The ribbon cutting will be at 12 noon but we'll be open and handing out the
free stuff at 10am.

another good week of releases here at stormy!! and we are only one week away from free comic book day!!!

saturday may 5th 2007 is FREE MUSIC DAY at stormy records!! because we
moved in with green brain, and may 5th is Free Comic Book Day, we have
worked out a wonderful way to be involved. we have talked with many of
our favorite record labels, and they wanted to be involved , too, so we
have free cds to give away from these wonderful labels - TEMPORARY
RESIDENCE, SUB POP, SOUTHERN LORD, MATADOR, FAT CAT, IMPORTANT, SADDLE
CREEK, THRILL JOCKEY, and many more!! we also have a super cool music
and movie magazine to giveout - Cashiers Du Cinemart, and some cool
music comic books, stickers and posters!! (if you run a label and want
to be involved, please send us music, magazines, or comic books you'd
like us to give away that day - we are expecting over 500 people
through the shop during the day - it is a great chance to promote music
here in detroit!)

on top of all the great free music, we will have free Jones Soda to
give away in the morning, we'll have a contest to win a copy of After
Burner, the play station game TRANS AM did all the music for, and we're
having a BJORK Volta listening party from 5pm to 8pm with giveaways,
snacks, and a contest to win a brand new BJORK remastered box set of
cds!!!

BASINSKI, WILLIAM: Shortwavemusic CD $14.99

Re-issue after 10 years (first issue on CD), originally released in
limited edition LP in 1997 on Noton (now Raster-Noton) . Full length CD
with bonus track not on original LP. The works on Shortwavemusic
resulted from a series of experiments in 1982 using lo-fi technology to
extract sounds from the airwaves and weave them into musical
tapestries. Using two reel-to-reel decks from the '60s, a radio and a
shortwave radio, Basinski recorded samples of music from the radio,
edited the tape into loops of varying lengths, and slowed them down.
These themes were then layered together in real time to an
accompaniment of randomly shifting shortwave radio static. The themes
explored were often brief excerpts [3 or 4 notes] from muzak-type
string versions of American popular standards. By manipulating these
themes and mixing them with an existing symphony of electronic
information, Basinski has created a series of glacial, atmospheric
aural landscapes for the listener to inhabit. The

music is timeless and compelling - a remarkably original experimental music album.

BASHIR, MUNIR: Rhythm & Melodies CD $18.99

The late Munir Bashir was known as 'The Emir of the Ud,' famous for his
long, Indian raga-influenced improvisations. From an obscure instrument
used in accompaniment, barely known outside the Arab world, the ud was
to become, in his hands, a vehicle for a mystical or, to use his own
expression, a 'metaphysical' musical language. The same phenomenon
occurred with Munir Bashir as did Ravi Shankar: the rediscovery of a
universal music transcending all frontiers. This previously-unreleas ed
recording dates from the '80s, when Munir Bashir was making regular
appearances on BBC TV. Most of what he performs here is Western music -
the theme tunes of famous alms or hit songs of the time.

RILEY, TERRY: Les Yeux Fermés & Lifespan CD $17.99

After changing the world in the late '60s with In C and A Rainbow in
Curved Air, legendary American composer and father of minimalism Terry
Riley abandoned tape manipulation and written composition to
concentrate on longform keyboard cycles and improvisations. In the
early '70s, while in Europe, he was invited to create scores for two
films. The first, in 1972, was Joel Santoni's Les Yeux Fermés, a
feature-length art film that instantly became a cult classic by virtue
of its never having screened in the USA. The second, Lifespan, directed
by Alexander Whitelaw in 1974, featured Klaus Kinski. Both soundtracks
were released in limited editions on LP and have long been
out-of-print. This first-ever CD release of these two classic Terry
Riley soundtracks - both on one disc - was remastered from the original
tapes, the hypnotic songs sounding far superior to the below-average
vinyl pressings.

As the infamous Tea Chest tapes continue to remain an enigma, we open
up our own box of masters to discover some hitherto unissued
Meek-produced recordings, plus other recordings long since unavailable.
With the release timed to coincide with the general notice being given
to the 40th anniversary of Meek's death (February 1967), this
collection will suit those looking for something new to extend their
Meek collection. The collection brings with it great examples of the
Meek production sound. From Glenda Collins, Meek's best known female
artist, is an unreleased version of her apocalyptic single recorded in
stereo. Two of the Ray Dexter tracks are also in stereo, a rare format
in the early 60s when these were made. Ray Dexter, a singer-songwriter
who was busy right through the 60s with singles released on many
labels, is included with four of his songs released for the first time.
Backing is by the Tornados, and include his demo of 'You Took My Love
For Granted,' a song he

wrote and Meek recorded with John Leyton as the B-side of the
international hit 'Wild Wind.' We also have the four John Carter and
Ken Lewis recordings Meek produced which have been unavailable for a

HEDAYAT, DASHIELL Obsolete on MANTRA CD $18.99

1971 classic. The LP was originally released on the legendary Shandar
label. Hedayat sang lead vocals, played keyboards and "cosmic-hedayat-
rumble and cut-ups," coerced Daevid Allen and Gillie Smyth (of Gong),
William Burroughs, Robert Wyatt's son Sam and others to join him in
recording this stoned, prog-psych masterwork of two long tracks. The
memorable message: "This record must be played as loud as possible,
must be heard as stoned as impossible, and thank you everybody" is

Deluxe gatefold LP version of the soundtrack to this Czech underground
film from 1973. Finders Keepers make musical history once again with
what they regard as their very finest, darkest and most magnificent
hour as they release the delicately haunting and sacred score to
Jaromil Jires' essential Eastern European hallucinogenic-
baroque-witch- flick Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders. Lubos Fiser
provides what is perhaps the greatest musical score of all the maligned
Czech New Wave feature-films with a gossamer-fragile blend of
pastoral-orchestral folk songs and clockwork harpsichords. From the
very first delicate chord to the final crescendo, this joyous sound is
as addictive as the bizarre imagery seen in this seldom celebrated
cinematic gem (which was screened in front of 300 mesmerized patrons of
this year's Green Man festival). Naturally, the list of musical
pioneers who freely confess their allegiance to the score verifies its
elevated place in contemporary pop.

Birmingham's dedicated concrete-pop- psych combo Broadcast recently
paid homage to the soundtrack on their Ha-Ha Sound LP while groups such
as Espers, Fursaxa and Marissa Nadler recently contributed to a live
performance of the soundtrack as a homage to its unwaning influence on
their music. Echoes of the score can also be heard in recent music by
Vashti Bunyan and it has been cited as a huge influence to the likes of
Tim Burton who based the carnival scene at the end of Big Fish on the
original film. Previously unprepared for public consumption, the
immaculate release has been compiled in close accordance to the
original storyline which was released in 1935 as a surrealist novel by
Vladislav Nezval. The orchestral suites of music have been separated
into 23 chapters with titles derived from the controversial novella.

a weak spot for protest songs from a few of his recent, frenetic
acoustic performances. His new CD "Songs of War and Peace" features
some of this material, but in settings that bear a closer resemblance
to the pretty and challenging music he's best known for. With a couple
great send-ups of patriotic songs opening and closing the record,
you'll be all set for this year's Fourth of July. Coincidentally, the

THE X-MEN™ MEET THE SYMPHONY!

Favorite X-Men Characters Appear in Young People's Concert

DETROIT, (April 20, 2007) - Super heroes will help the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra close out the current season of "Super Saturdays at
The Max," when the X-Men™ join the DSO for the final National City
Young People's Concerts of the 2006-07 season. With the help of
powerful music, favorite X-Men characters will battle evil and show how
important it is to celebrate our differences. The concerts, led by
Lawrence Loh, Associate Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra,
take place on Saturday, April 21 at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in Orchestra
Hall at the Max M. Fisher Music Center. Meanwhile, at 10:30 a.m. in
The Music Box at The Max, the Életfa Hungarian Folk Band will introduce
little ones, ages 3 to 6, to the rich culture of Hungary through song,
dance, narration and demonstrations. Youngsters attending any of the
concerts can participate in KidZone, a festival of fun kids'
activities, in the Atrium lobby of The Max.

X-Men Meet the Symphony is a unique, interactive,
theatrical concert with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra that will
feature many of the most popular X-Men heroes such as Wolverine, Storm
and Beast, as they battle against the evil mutant Magneto. The heroes
spend the concert trying to recover a magic "Mutant Reversal Ray" -- a
special conductor's baton -- that Magneto has stolen. The baton
harnesses the power of music to turn mutant X-Men into normal humans.
The X-Men, however, don't want to be "normal;" they appreciate the
things about themselves that make them unique, and encourage the
audience members to do the same. At the end of the show, all of the
audience members are inducted as "junior super heroes." Throughout the
concert, the X-Men are accompanied by great classical music, including
works by Debussy, Strauss, Shostakovich, Hindemith and more. The show
concludes with the Suite from the film X2: X-Men United.

Tickets for the Young People's Concert series range from $10 to $27.
A limited number of box seats are $46. Tickets to Tiny Tots concerts
are $12, general admission. All tickets include admission to KidZone.

MIKKEL METAL:Brone and Wait CD $16.99
This is Copenhagen-based producer Mikkel Meldgaard's (aka Mikkel Metal) third full-length release, and second for Echochord. Mikkel started his music career more than 10 years ago as a guitarist in various noise-rock bands. In the mid-'90s his focus changed to electronic music, inspiration coming primarily from breakbeat music, particularly drum'n'bass. It's during this period that gave Mikkel his nickname "Metal," due to his fondness for hard, metallic drum'n'bass cuts. Around 1999, Mikkel changed focus towards genres like click'n'cuts, IDM, techno and dub, and started releasing under the Mikkel Metal moniker. He has primarily released on Danish label Echochord and German label Kompakt: the former with a dubby, grainy sound, the latter focusing on a more melodic and 4/4-based sound. These ten brand new tracks range from 4-to-the-floor deep minimal tracks to dubby abstract ambient. Once again, Mikkel excels at bringing a modern twist to electronic dub and techno that ranks him in the same league of such luminaries as Deadbeat, Vladislav Delay, Pole and Maurizio.

Limited vinyl by the great experimental guitarist Oren Ambarchi from Australia. A Touch label recording artist, Oren has been making music since 1986, creating sounds from the guitar that one would not expect to hear. On this LP, two long tracks one per side, start from minimal low frequency sounds to ever growing drones of manipulated guitars... staggeringly beautiful! Limited to 650 hand numbered copies!

The brilliant releases from Gerald Donald aka Heinrich Mueller aka Rudolf Klorzeiger aka Der Zyklus (aka 1/2 of Drexciya etc.). Originally released on the obscure Dataphysix records from Detroit in 1995, and now available again on Clone Classic Cuts. The three 12"s bundled together on one double album/CD as Gesamtkunstwerk (previously limited availability on Gigolo records). Including amazing tracks like 'Scientist,' 'Pornoactress,' 'Sterilization,' 'Rocket Scientist,' 'Cellular Phone' and 'Speak & Spell.' This is one of those releases which completely went against all musical trends in the mid-'90s when everybody was doing banging techno and uptempo house. Dopplereffekt (and Drexciya) brought us one of those releases which changed our thoughts on dance music. They showed us that techno music is not about the most effective banging beats. These Dataphysix releases started the electro revival of the late '90s early 2000 and influenced many producers including Daftpunk, DJ Hell, Miss Kittin, I-f, Dave Clarke, Erol Alkan, 2manyDJs, and many others. This is some kind our Computerworld or Autobahn for the '90s generation! And finally available again after being out-of-print for a couple of years.

Triple vinyl version, deluxe fold out package. "While most albums of this length would be considered tedious at best, SOTL are arguably the only contemporary composers who can seemingly alter the time-space continuum simply through the playback of their organized sound. Perhaps the best references for this current work would be found in the score to the film Le Mepris by Georges Delerue, the orchestral works of Zbigniew Preisner, or the 1958 CSO/ Fritz Reiner recording of Hovhaness' Mysterious Mountain, specifically the third movement. But in the final analysis, such comparisons are superfluous at best, as Stars of the Lid have created a musical universe in which they are the sole inhabitant. Simply put, this album is a masterpiece.

Kanryu: Debut Live in Korea 2006 sees Mikami reunited with the masterful Korean komungo player and vocalist Shin Heyon, who played together with him on the Fukon group release. Eight years on that epochal cross-cultural meeting, Mikami journeyed to Seoul for two nights of concerts. Shin's stringed komungo brings a thick and knotted presence to the overall sound, while Seoul resident Japanese musician Sato Yukie tosses in swirling metallic blats of electronics and guitar. There's a gorgeous languorous, slow-motion flow to the proceedings as Mikami revisits classics from the full span of his back catalog, including a spine-tingling version of 'Kid with a Gun,' his once-banned ode to teen-murderer-turned-death-row poet Nagayama Norio. MIKAMI, KAN: Barking Practice///White Lines CD on PSF $21.99
Two new heavy-hitting blasts from Japan's indefatigable master of the psychedelic, surrealist blues. After a recent European tour and an hour-long special on Japanese television, the wonderfully titled Barking Practice /// White Lines finds Kan Mikami back in the studio in one-take guitar and vocal mode. There's a depth of song spirit on display here that beggars belief - the guitar bites in all the right place, and Mikami's voice is tuned to a new pitch of hard-won soulfulness, in turns bristle-harsh, lush, fractured, deep as all hell. Staggering work. Includes English lyrics and some fabulously atmospheric photos by Paolo Patrizi.

SENKING: List CD on Raster $17.99
Is there beauty in the threatening? With List Senking introduces 40 minutes of the darkest matter and reckons: yes. On List he varies and experiments with a - for Raster-Noton - frightening diversity of sounds. He reveals the pieces as sound-collages, as quotes, which seem to refer to splatter movie and film noir. Following the tremendous plot of his endtime-subject, he persistently welds together sound spaces in order to compress them later into overwhelming drone-sounds. These as such, then go to serve a fundamental purpose, as an environment for minimalistic themes and melodies, always to be driven by the ever present slow-beat of the pieces. Nonetheless, the syntax, the destiny of each single piece is highly varied and has the appearance of a much more mature composition, compared to his earlier works. Remarkably the technical aspect does not take a leading role in Senking's anti-utopia visions. It's about substantial and age-old patterns, about impulses and the inevitable.

Originals are unique, be it genetic codes or image and sound documents. Their copies are mere means of distribution. To secure these originals from misuse is the main issue today. The essence and potential of the copy mostly is disregarded. We live in a world of constant reproduction where only the replication counts as original, the single object is a sheer copy of the prefiguration, which is abstract and becomes an icon. The uncountable number of multiplied images confirm the original, but immediately the copy withdraws and assesses its own value. By the technique of copying the copy also often contains mistakes and abstractions, that differ from the original. These simplifications and deformations inherent to the copy process lead to a gradual loss of its connection to the original and results in a substantial change of meaning. Although there is still a rest of the actual source, the original message disperses in the white noise of reproduction. At the end the observer cannot hardly differentiate if the origin is part of the information transferred. If there is still a integral material component of the original or this can only be projected - this question remains unanswered. What finally remains is the process of copying itself. It becomes a creative tool by analytically accomplishing something new. The mutating copy provides space for development - the copy becomes original again. Xerrox is the new, self-contained project of Alva Noto, which like his 'Transall' series (Transrapid, Transvision and Transspray) is intended to be released in five parts during the next years. On Xerrox, Alva Noto works with samples from muzak, advertising, soundtracks and entertainment programs. These sounds we hear randomly in everyday life and thereby they become an always present and available public domain. With Xerrox Alva Noto manipulates these recognizable melodic (micro) structures by the process of copying. He alienates them beyond recognition so the results manifest their connection to the original only suggestively. In this respect: the original is copied to the original. Some of you may know the side of composer/inventor Frank Pahl that has a weak spot for protest songs from a few of his recent, frenetic acoustic performances. His new CD "Songs of War and Peace" features some of this material, but in settings that bear a closer resemblance to the pretty and challenging music he's best known for. With a couple great send-ups of patriotic songs opening and closing the record, you'll be all set for this year's Fourth of July. Doors at 9 pm; $5-10.

Favorite X-Men Characters Appear in Young People's Concert

DETROIT, (April 17, 2007) - Super heroes will help the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra close out the current season of "Super Saturdays at
The Max," when the X-Men™ join the DSO for the final National City
Young People's Concerts of the 2006-07 season. With the help of
powerful music, favorite X-Men characters will battle evil and show how
important it is to celebrate our differences. The concerts, led by
Lawrence Loh, Associate Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra,
take place on Saturday, April 21 at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in Orchestra
Hall at the Max M. Fisher Music Center. Meanwhile, at 10:30 a.m. in
The Music Box at The Max, the Életfa Hungarian Folk Band will introduce
little ones, ages 3 to 6, to the rich culture of Hungary through song,
dance, narration and demonstrations. Youngsters attending any of the
concerts can participate in KidZone, a festival of fun kids'
activities, in the Atrium lobby of The Max.

The final Tiny Tots concert of the season features the Életfa Hungarian Folk Band,
a seven-piece ensemble that specializes in the authentic folklore of
the villages of present-day Hungary, Transylvania, Romania, Slovakia
and beyond. The beauty and energy of Hungarian folkdance is a key part
of their performances, and the colorful and festive dancers, along with
the music's infectious rhythms, encourage young audience members to
join in. Featuring violins, cello, bass, kontra (a 3 string viola) and
many folk instruments, Életfa Hungarian Folk Band present a high energy
musical tour of their native country ideally suited to small children.

Adding to the "super" quality of the morning is "KidZone,"
a festival of free kids' activities in the atrium lobby to enjoy
before, in between and after performances. KidZone activities include
balloon artists, arts & crafts, an instrument petting zoo with
Marshall Music, the opportunity to meet members of the DSO, and
performances by students from the Detroit School of Arts. Doors open
at 9:30 a.m. Admission to "KidZone" is free to all ticketholders and a
variety of snacks and beverages are available.

Just received some timely advice for anyone interested in reading World War III from DC Comics. All four issues of World War III will arrive this Wednesday along with 52 #50.

If you are already reading 52 the series, read World War III first and then
read 52 #50. This will result in a better overall flow of story and in
turn a much more satisfying experience.

Next Wednesday April 18th at 11 am on WDET 101.9 FM they will air a large
segment focusing on the work of local comic creator Marty Hirchak who
will be appearing here on Free Comic Book Day. If you listen real close

TORAL, RAFAEL: Space Solo 1 CD $15.99
This is Rafael Toral's 11th release, the first for the Quecksilber label, and another continuation of his "Space Program." After 15+ years of accomplished work on guitar and electronics, the Portuguese musician, producer and sound engineer announced that he was to embark on a long-term project, which was to be a multi-faceted work-in-progress representing his new approach to music. With the release of the first album of the program, the eponymous Space, he managed to disrupt the notions of avant-garde music, choosing to focus on "single sound events." The sounds are generated by self-devised electronic equipment set into action by the performance of gestures, by bodily action (take a look at the video samples of the "Space Study 1" on his web site, where he "plays" glove-controlled computer sinewaves). Thus, the music is created by individual decisions in real time - just like in jazz, as Toral emphasizes. So basically, this is electronic music played with a jazz sensibility. Toral brings a performative aspect to electronic music that it often sorely lacks. The initial album Space is like a roadmap, accompanied by three distinct serieses: the performance series "Space Studies" (which started in 2004), and the record series "Space Elements" and "Solo Series." The latter are unaccompanied real-time solo recordings on one instrument only (as opposed to "Space Elements," where Toral collaborates with other musicians). The present CD is the first in that series and the second materialization of the program. Whereas Space featured an orchestral approach to composition (and thus a diversity of elements), Space Solo 1 presents the listener with music that is narrowed down almost to a point: everything is concentrated on a single element. The key feature of this music is that it was performed with a degree of skill, a commitment and a depth of exploration that could not be found on an orchestral record. On this album, Toral appears as a musician who simply plays an instrument on an individual, human and physical level. One cannot help but notice that Toral is opening up a new dimension in music - and maybe also in language. Welcome to a new mode of expression.

POLE:Steingarten CD on Scape $16.99 (back in next week - i sold the whole batch while putting the email update together)
This is Berlin-based producer Stefan Betke's sixth full-length release, and his second release on his own ~scape label. After his duties remixing and producing such artists as John Tejada, T.Raumschmiere and Barbara Morgenstern, and a collaboration with Burnt Friedman and Kit Clayton, Pole presents music that could be architecture, with his elegantly spare form that reaches out into space. After minimalist experiments with elements of hip-hop and dub, Steingarten has hardly any concrete references. What has remained, though, is the minimalism so characteristic of Pole. Built around little loops, his arrangements dispose with any kind of ornamentation. A stark contrast with the album's title and cover - which shows a picture of the famously ornate, gingerbread-style castle Schloss Neuschwanstein. But despite some funky grooves, this is no dancefloor record. And despite its simplicity, the music never comes across as meager or repellently cool. This might be due to the fact that Pole has found a perfect middle point between avant-garde and pop. The beats are groovy, but never overtly dance-oriented. Melodies are used as harmonic dashes of color, but remain fragmentary rather than sing-song-y. Some cracking noises pop up, but not as a dissonant element - they just seem a logical part of the sound structure - a structure that creates space and order. Things dark, nebulous and irrational are alien to Pole, so it's all the more amazing how well it nurtures daydreams - and practically invites listeners to drift off on flights of fancy. There is indeed one thing that Pole's music shares with the visions of King Ludwig, who, in building Schloss Neuschwanstein, wanted to create a world for himself shielded from reality: Pole's warm bass and powerful but elastic production style conveys a feeling of coziness; it doesn't take on the outside world, doesn't mirror it or comment on it, but creates a world all its own. NULL, KK:Fertile CD on Touch $15.99
K.K. Null is legendary Japanese noise experimentician Kazuyuki Kishino, and this is his first full-length solo release on Touch, following his collaboration with Chris Watson and Z'ev in 2005, which Boomkat called "moving and atmospheric," and The Wire wrote "...a complex dramatic work from a strict economy of means." K.K. Null is a composer, guitarist, singer, mastermind of seminal noise group Zeni Geva and electronic wizard. One of the top names in Japanese noise music and in a wider context, one of the great cult artists in experimental music since the early '80s. Kazuyuki writes: "In June of 2006, I had the good fortune of visiting Darwin in the Northern Territory in Australia and explored in Kakadu National Park with some good friends. I took my digital recorder along with me and did some live field recordings there. First we encountered a flock of wild birds just beside the South Alligator River, and then we happened to find 'bush fire' flaring just beside the road we were on. I also had a unique opportunity to record a magnificent symphony orchestra of insects, frogs and birds in wetlands just before sunset. At that time I had no idea or no specific purpose for using these field recordings, and in the middle of working on this album (Fertile) in my home studio, suddenly came up with the idea of mixing these field recordings into some of the tracks that were unfinished. I felt comfortable with layering & mixing different sounds from different locations and times, digital and analog sounds into one piece. I like also the balance of spontaneity (field recording) and intentional act (studio recording)." After playing the guitar as his main instrument for some twenty years, K. K. Null has gradually moved towards a more electronic approach. In recent years he has concentrated his efforts on his solo & collaborative recordings, exploring the outer territories of electronica. His intense clashing waves of noise, structured electro-acoustic ambience, broken down rhythmics, scattered pitch sculptures and droning isolationist material could be described "cosmic noise maximal/minimalism.

CLUSTER: Cluster II LP version $22.99
Originally released in 1972, this is the second album by legendary German ambient pioneers Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius. Moebius and Roedelius essentially create ambient electronic soundscapes that ebb and flow, droning on in a suspended world of anti-gravity where machine has conquered man.

THROBBING GRISTLE: Part Two CD on Mute $17.99
The legendary Throbbing Gristle have completed their first new studio album in 25 years, entitled Part Two. Almost 30 years on since their inception from the ashes of performance art troupe/media guerrilla cell Coum Transmissions, Throbbing Gristle's challenging, expressive, self-empowering manifestos and music are as relevant today as they were back in the bleak mid-'70s. As historically important during their active period of 1975 - 1981 as contemporaries Can, The Sex Pistols, and Kraftwerk, Throbbing Gristle's influence on today's music (from experimental production techniques and confrontational live shows to independent promotion via their own Industrial Records label) runs far deeper than they are often credited.

For those of you already living a couple of years ahead of the rest of us, you will know that this will be the fifth full length by this band, and that it was originally released in 2006 on their own white elephant imprint. It's actually more like a solo outing by LSDM front-man Shinsuke Michishita (on voice, guitar, bass and percussion), accompanied on two tracks by legendary drummer Ikuro Takahashi (High Rise, Fushitsusha, Tamio Shiraishi, Kosokuya, Che-Shizu, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Nagisa Ni Te, etc). most of the songs here are intimate, in-your-inner-ear ballads, hypnagogic and melancholic, achy hangovers from the third Velvets LP - sorrowful birds on the last tree in the universe, thinking themselves into being, then forgetting themselves, then remembering again. except for the title track, that is - an 8-minute doppler-effect trance that gets you wasted on polonium 210, sets the dials of the Kabbalah for the heart of the sun, and clicks 'send.

This show is brought to you courtesy of Bohouse family member Kim Paris' Sinister/Foxy Productions. Butterfly Explosion is from Dublin and was a big hit last year at SXSW. They get compared to an absurd mixture of bands on the internet; more info on them to come. Freer is rock band that's notable for dramatic, slightly tortured pop gems. Formerly based in Detroit, it's now more Chicago-centric. Still totally Detroit based, Zoos of Berlin plays music that is full of changes without being convolouted.

Gunda is an improvising violinist/violist from Germany. Her early background was in classical violin, but for last 20 years or so, she has collaborated with noted New Music musicians, including Peter Kowald, William Parker, Assif Tsahar, Fred Frith, Oliver Lake and many others. This has been expanded to a 2 night run! Detroit raised drummer Gerald Cleaver played with some of the cities most adventurous musicians, like A. His career there has included playing with Peter Kowald, Assif Tsahar, Roscoe Mitchell, Toots Thielman, Andrea Parkins, Bob James, Joe Morris and many others. These Brookly based Anthony Braxton alumni can walk the line between free improvisation and pretty avant-folk songwriting. Leader Taylor Ho Bynum plays cornet with Braxton and in Cecil Taylor's large band, as well as with many hybrid music groups . Mary Halvorson is a flat-out amazing guitarist who uses a very original vocabulary. Percussionist Tomas Fujiwara has played with many creative music greats, including Butch Morris, William Parker, Roy Campbell and Daniel Carter. Opening is bass clarinetist Jason Stein, previously seen at the Bohemian with Ken Vandermark and company in the group Bridge 61, and Kevin Davis, a Chicago cellist.

Some of northern Europe's finest improvisers. Free jazz, energy-music and covers of Lightning Bolt and The White Stripes! Flaten and Nilsen-Love are Norway's heaviest rhythm section and the choice of any improviser who hits the country.

Tired of shopping at malls and shopping centers that blare traditional holiday music? This Saturday at Green Brain Comics in Dearborn your holiday shopping is going to get a vitamin shot of good ol' Detroit Techno.

On Saturday, December 16th from 4 to 8pm Green Brain Comics in conjunction with Detroit Techno Militia, Underground Resistance and AlterEgo Management presents:
The Visual Soundtrack.
Featuring low key DJ sets from DTM veteran T.Linder and DJ Konspiracy, The Visual Soundtrack also features Underground Resistance's visual artist, Frankie Fultz presenting works ranging from early UR artwork to works created on site at Green Brain that afternoon.

This special event is free to the public. While you enjoy the music, take advantage of Green Brain Comic's annual Year End Clearance Sale. Brian K. Vaughan signs Pride of Baghdad in Dearborn on Nov 18th

Green Brain Comics and the Arab American National Museum proudly welcome the Eisner Award winning writer Brian K. Vaughan to the museum library on Saturday, November 18, 2006 for a very special appearance in honor of his new original graphic novel "PRIDE OF BAGHDAD."

This event will include a reading from the book and a signing with the author. "Brian K. Vaughan is one of the most in-demand writers in the comic business," says event organizer Dan Merritt, "but the chance to bring this book to the city that 30,000 Arab-Americans call home was just too unique to pass up." Shortly after the appearance at the museum Green Brain Comics will host a post-event reception with Mr. Vaughan to cap off the evening.

The reading starts at 3pm on Saturday, November 18th at the Arab American National Museum's library with a book signing directly following until 5pm. There will be no charge for autographs, but we respectfully request a three item limit. The museum is located at 13624 Michigan Avenue in Dearborn, Michigan.

Green Brain Comics will host the post event reception at 7pm. This is an opportunity to meet and greet the author in a casual, relaxed setting. The shop is located at 13210 Michigan Avenue (just four blocks east of the museum).

About Pride of Baghdad: In the spring of 2003, a pride of lions escaped from the Baghdad Zoo during an American bombing raid. Lost and confused, hungry but finally free, the four lions roamed the decimated streets of Baghdad in a desperate struggle for their lives. In documenting the plight of the lions, PRIDE OF BAGHDAD raises questions about the true meaning of liberation — can it be given, or is it earned only through self-determination and sacrifice? And in the end, is it truly better to die free than to live life in captivity?
In this provocative graphic novel, Vaughan examines life on the streets of war-torn Iraq. The experience is made all the more evocative by the lush, spectacular artwork of Niko Henrichon.

About the author: Brian K. Vaughan has been writing comics since 1996. He has written most of the major DC and Marvel characters, including Batman and the X-Men. Vaughan won the Eisner Award for Best Writer for his work on Y: The Last Man, Runaways, Ex Machina and Marvel's Ultimate X-Men. He also won the 2005 Eisner for Best New Series (along with artists Tony Harris and Tom Feister) for Ex Machina. Vaughan was nominated for five additional Eisners in 2006 (Best Writer; Best Single Issue, Best Serialized Story and Best Continuing Series for Ex Machina; and Best Serialized Story for Y: The Last Man).

Also showing is the feature documentary, Stranded at the Corner: The Battle to Save Historic Tiger Stadium. Directed by Gary Glaser, this documentary recounts the history of Detroit and Tiger Stadium and tells of the numerous battles to save the stadium -- a must see for anyone who cares about Detroit and the state of the City.

Hey Kids!

Lots of stuff coming up real soon, so let me start with this event
announcement.

On Saturday October 7th, Green Brain Comics and Stormy Records are
holding two very exciting events that showcase our relationships with
the local and worldwide community.

Starting at 12 noon on Saturday October 7th, Green Brain Comics kicks
off our 4th Annual 24 Hour Comic Day.

For those of you that are unfamiliar with the 24 Hour Comic Challenge,
it is the invention of comic scholar Scott McCloud (Understanding
Comics, Zot) and his fellow creator Steve Bissette (Taboo, Swamp Thing)
that challenges creators to start and finish a 24 page comic in 24
consecutive hours. Think that sounds easy? You'll never know unless you
try.

This is an international event, involving creators from 13 countries.

In the past, we have had a larger space to host this event. Due to our
reorganization and partnership with Stormy Records, the space available
will be a bit cozier. Due to space constraints we have to be very clear
that only the most dedicated and determined individuals will be accepted
to participate. If this sounds like you, please stop in and get an
application to the 24 Hour Comic Day. A very modest entry fee of $10
will get you a place to work, a swell meal of pizza and all the coffee
you need to through this gruelling marathon. The entry fee will also
gain you entry to a very special event later in the evening.

Stormy Records is hosting a benefit to raise money for the American Cancer Society here at the Stormy/Green Brain collective. Their friend Dave Mcglassen passed away early this summer from cancer at only 48 years old. he never had a chance to see our new location, so they are having a special show for him here. A wake of sorts. And since we all know someone who is suffering from cancer or has passed from it, we thought this wake for dave could be a special fundraiser where all proceeds go to the american cancer society. Performers include Dave's good friends from the area -

A minimum donation is $5, and any extra is greatly appreciated. They

Hey Kids!

The staff of Green Brain Comics would like
to express our sincere appreciation for your patience during the last month. We knew that the kinds of changes that we had to institute were going to be tough to execute and also to adjust to, but we truly feel that all of these changes are for the benefit of your comic shopping experience and for the benefit of the comic book industry. Thank you.

The new floorplan really came together at the last minute on Friday evening. Just in time for a very exclusive live performance from Will Oldham (Bonnie Prince Billy) that was put together by the good folks at Stormy Records and Drag City Records. Mr Oldham sang and played his guitar for well over an hour to the delight of an intimate audience composed of winners of a random lottery of Stormy Records' regular customers.

Thats the kind of stuff that happens when we embrace change.

Now that we are regaining our equilibrium, it's time for us to knuckle down and get the momentum rolling for some events that we have on the horizon. Things like 24 Hour Comic Day and SNAP! will be right around the corner. So there will be less change than normal, and more good old fashion work happening around Cerebro verde Cómico

Tonight there is a Detroit Derby Girls event.
Also the Scavenger Quartet is playing at the Bohemian National Home.

Tomorrow, the Sunday August 20th edition of the Dearborn Press and
Guide will feature a cover story on Spider-Man. Each weekend edition
of the Press & Guide will feature a 16-page collectors-edition comic book-sized
publication. Be sure to look closely at the photo included in the article.

Hey Kids!

Next weeks list is HUGE!

But this week (07/12/06) I read "MAYBE LATER" from Drawn and Quarterly.
I'm a sucker for a well crafted journal comic. And while I've not had much exposure to either of the creators' works (namely the wildly popular "Mr. Jean" series from french publisher Les humanoïdes, also freshly translated from D&Q (also released this week in "GET A LIFE")) this book has been on my must read list. This is mostly due to the D&Q Free Comic Book Day 2006 release featuring excerpts from both of the above mentioned book.
"MAYBE LATER" is unique in the framework of journal comics, since both creators (Dupuy & Berberian) give us personal tales of their trials and tribulations during the creation of their latest volume of "Mr. Jean". The occasional tale of mid-life crisis and other personal demons pops up to keep the drama flowing. Above all, it's a crafty series of snapshots from a pair of seasoned creators that are so well teamed that both styles are nearly interchangable. At times, if it weren't for the first person narrative, either creator could've sat in to tell these all to personal tales.

The Insane Wrestling Federation returns this Friday, July 14 to the
American Serbian Hall in Detroit. The American Serbian Hall is located
at 19940 Van Dyke at Outer Drive near 7 Mile in Detroit.

LINE-UP INCLUDES INTERNATIONAL HEADLINERS DETROIT, Michigan. June 2006
– The Concert of Colors, Metro-Detroit's annual diversity festival,
announces line-up to include international headliners.
This year's Concert of Colors boasts another stellar of collection of
national and international stars including multiple Grammy
award-winning South African vocal ensemble, Ladysmith Black
Mambazo; monumental folk duo, Indigo Girls; Latin jazz superstar,
Poncho Sanchez and outspoken hip-hop/reggae artist, Michael Franti and
Spearhead.
The 3-day event will take place at the Max M. Fisher Music Center in
downtown Detroit. This new location is the result of a new partnership
between festival organizers and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The
Concert of Colors—a free, weekend-long world music festival sponsored
every year by ACCESS (Arab Community Center for Economic and Social
Services) and New Detroit—is scheduled for July 14-16th.

SNAP! The Comic Arts Festival 2006 announced.

In response to the overwhelmingly positive reception of Dearborns first creators only comic convention back in October 2005, organizers have set the date of Saturday November 4th for "SNAP! The Comic Arts Festival 2006".

"Last year we set out to prove that a small press comic event could be successful in the Detroit area. And it was!" says event coordinator Dan Merritt, "Creators and attendees alike gave us so many favorable reviews that we knew SNAP! had to be repeated."

The second annual "SNAP! The Comic Arts Festival" will be held at Al Matta Hall 5121 Oakman in Dearborn, Michigan. The one day event starts at 10am and runs until 6pm, with an intermission from 2-3pm featuring live music from local musicians. The Al Matta grill will be cooking up some great food, and the panels and workshops will be held within arms reach of the Al Matta bar. Comics, creators, music, food and beer! Was success ever in doubt?

Exhibition space is reserved for comic creators and publishers only! Table applications are available now by e-mail at snap@greenbrain.biz

Plans are still coming together, so check the website for guest and program listing as well as advertising opportunities.

The SNAP! Launch Party will be held Friday November 3rd at Green Brain Comics 13210 Michigan Ave. in Dearborn, just 3 blocks from Al Matta Hall. Refreshments and entertainment will be provided by your hosts at Green Brain and their new upstairs neighbors, Stormy Records.

comic jam originally scheduled for Wednesday July 12th. We hope to
have a new dedicated space on the main floor in time for the next
regular scheduled comic jam (August 9th)

Next the good news. Friday July 14th at is another great bill with the Insane Wrestling Federation at the American Serbian Hall 19940 Van Dyke. Tickets are available here at Green Brain or at the door.
