Spore

It has arrived. Spore is now out for Mac. This game is by the creator of Sims, and works under similar principles, but with creatures instead of people. You begin as a tiny creature in water, and then evolve onto land. From there you form a tribe, then migrate onto city stage, and then finally space. Your creature evolves as they progress through the game. There are predators and you can also make friends with other creatures to form a stronger pack. I'm not a hardcore gamer by any means, but this game is fun. It has something for everyone.

The biggest downside to Spore is that it has high system requirements. It only runs on computers with OSX 10.5.3 and requires the Intel Core Duo processor as a minimum. You need at least 1Gb of ram, and a decent graphics card. If you have a macbook with an integrated graphics card than it needs to be the GMA X3100 or higher (which only came out less than a year ago). However, if your computer has what it takes, i highly recommend you come in and grab yourself a copy.

WWDC 2008

It's over. Well, not quite, but the keynote is. The WWDC ( World Wide Developers Conference) will continue for the rest of the week.

All announcements have been made. I have to admit, I'm a bit disappointed. I was hoping they would revamp the MacBooks. There were rumors of making them aluminum. I had such hopes for a small aluminum laptop of reasonable price and power (The MacBook Air doesn't count. I'm still rather attached to my built-in DVD drive). I have a strange attachment to the old 12" Powerbooks. I want one of those, with more power. Alas, I will have to wait for that dream to come true. Perhaps they will do a release at the end of the summer. I may have to wait until MacWorld in January '09, or longer.

The news of the 3G iPhone is exciting. According the their now updated website, Canadians can get the iPhone at the nearest Rogers or Fido store as of July 11th, 2008. There doesn't seem to be a way to purchase them off the Apple site. As far as I know, we, as an Authorized Apple Reseller, will not be able to sell them, though I will post here if there is a change. You will be able to get cases and other accessories for the iPhone here once the cases for the 3G start coming out.

The iPhone 2.0 software is also exciting. I think the iWork integration will the largest perk for me, however I am of the opinion that it is unfair that iPod touch owners have to pay for it when iPhone owners do not.

Mac OSX 10.5 a.k.a Leopard is to be released Friday October 26th (after 6:00 pm).

There will be some exciting new changes in Leopard including major changes to "finder" and Apple Mail. Check out this site for an overview of the changes.

Leopard will retail for $129.00 +tax.

After months of speculation and waiting with baited breath, the new iLife and iWork have been released. Apple decide to skip the '07 version and has released '08 versions of both. Many changes have been made.

iLife '08 has seen some major updates to iPhoto. My favorite change is the "events". You know when you used to import photos and it would give you the opportunity to name the roll, but after you named it you rarely ever saw the name again? Well now events and rolls have been made into one and the same thing. WHen you import into iphoto '08 you name the "event" and your photos will remain organized as such. You have the opportunity to view your photos organized as events or in the old fashioned way with all of the photos laid out.
There have also been major changes to imovie. THe program looks totally different. Apple made the changes to make it more friendly for the every day user. I have yet to see if this is true.
iDVD, iWeb also have a few changes. Check out the full review of the changes here.

iWork '08 also has some great new changes. The biggest is a whole new program; Numbers. Yes, Apple has finally released a spreadsheet application for their iWork suite. Pages also has a new more professional look. Keynote has benefited from some new templates and changes as well. For a full overview check here.

For the most part I have heard only good things about the changes. I too am happy with most of them though some learning will have to be done.

Apple also released their new line of iMacs. They have new brushed metal and glass finishes and all of the specs have been upgraded. We will be getting a demo model here at the as soon as possible but they are slow to ship just yet.

The Waiting Game

During the past week there have been many hopeful inquiries about the whereabouts of Apple's new iPhone, but for the time being, patience must be had by Canadians.

On June 29th the glorified iPhone was released in the USA. It has not, however, come to Canada yet, and there is no firm word on when it will. When the iPhone was first announced in February there was rumor it may come to Canada in the fall, but there has been no follow-up information since. Apple has not set a release date yet. It seems we will have to wait an unknowable amount of time, but rest assured, when they do come to Canada, we will let you know!

A few weeks ago Apple updated the ever popular Macbook. They now all ship with a minimum of 1GB of ram. They have also increased the processor speeds so that the even the basic model ships with a 2.0GHz intel core 2 duo processor. The good news is that prices have not changed so buyers are getting more without spending more.

Continuing with this trend of upgrading, Apple released a line of upgraded Macbook Pro's. They now ship with a minimum of 2GB of ram. They too have had an increase in their processor speeds and hard drive space. They also have new brighter screens. The prices have not changed on the Macbook Pro line either so customers continue to get more!
