Evans Data Survey: JavaScript Dominates EMEA Development

East and Africa, according to a new survey of developers in that region
by Evans Data Corp.

Over 60 percent of developers use JavaScript and that usage has
outstripped all 3GL and scripting language use, including Java itself.
Part of the language s growth is due to the increased use of AJAX, a
popular technique for creating web applications with JavaScript. AJAX
is used by 38 percent of developers a 30 percent increase in the last
year, according to EDC.

Damon from the Voice Over IP Weblog starts us off today with a look back on 2007 and, more importantly perhaps, how his opinions have changed over the course of the year. Although having an admitted hate-hate relationship with Skype, his tune has changed, as have his thoughts on Jangl. Will certainly be interesting to see what ‘08 brings.

Tom Keating from the VoIP & Gadgets Blog leaves the VoIP realm long enough for a slight rail against changes afoot at DirecTV. Although I’m a huge fan of warp-speed fast-forwarding through commercials, I haven’t noticed this little “helpful” quirk… let’s hope it stays that way.

Rich Tehrani from the VoIP Blog takes a little diversion as well, taking time to let us know about rapper MC Hammer’s latest project, DanceJam. Billed as the “First dance-focused social media destination,” it’s certainly a vast departure from MC Hammer’s days of U Can’t Touch This, but hey, anything is better than those damn pants he was fond of wearing back in the day, right?

Inverclyde Council adopts VoIP

Inverclyde Council has installed an Ethernet VPN fibre network and IP telephony at a cost of £3 million.

The new communications system from ntl: Telewest connects the council’s 5,000 staff and is expected to bring major cost savings as staff can now make free internal calls via VoIP.

The system was also chosen for its flexibility to provide scaleable bandwidth to all council and school buildings within Inverclyde.

It has allowed billing procedures to be rationalised, freeing up staff time for other tasks.

The Ethernet VPN service delivers 10mbp/s bandwidth to each council building. Connections to their core site are delivered as Gigabit Services.

Drivers With Cell Phones Tend To Ignore Hands-Free Laws

A study of 902 cell phone user-drivers in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York by Harris Interactive found that just 14% use hands-free gear while driving.

A survey of drivers with mobile phones in states with hands-free driving laws has found the respondents generally say they favor the laws. But in practice those drivers tend not to follow the laws and hold handsets to their ears while driving.

In a study of 902 cell phone user-drivers in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York, states that outlaw the use of cell phones while driving, Harris Interactive found that 72% of them have a hands-free product, but 38% of the time they use their hand-held phones. Just 14% use hands-free gear while driving.

Yet, 77% of the drivers say they support the hands-free driving laws.

The survey was commissioned by Parrot, a maker of hands-free car kits, which markets a line of Bluetooth-based car kits. "The reality is that the majority of tri-state drivers are still using their hand-held cell phones because they don't perceive that the law applies to them," said Parrot president and chief operating officer Ed Valdez in a statement.

"While many New York tri-state area drivers admit to having hands-free solutions, they're not consistently using them," Valdez continued. "According to the study, that's because the majority are using headsets and earbuds that drivers say are uncomfortable and difficult to use."
