Staff Sgt. William D. Vile, 27, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was declared Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown (DUSTWUN) after insurgents attacked their unit using direct fire on May 1, 2009, near the village of Nishagam, in Konar Province, Afghanistan. Staff Sgt. Vile is assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.

Keith M. "Matt" Maupin

OIF — Pfc. Keith M. Maupin, 20, of Batavia, Ohio, became unaccounted for on April 9, 2004, when his convoy came under attack by individuals using rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire. Maupin is assigned to the Army Reserve's 724th Transportation Company, Bartonville, Illinois. He was declared captured on April 16, 2004.

Update: After his capture, Pfc. Maupin was promoted to corporal and later to sergeant.

Update: On August 15, 2006, Sgt. Maupin was promoted to staff sergeant.

Update: On March 29, 2008, the reamins of Staff Sgt. Maupin were identified. Please see his memorial entry at American Heroes Memorial.

Byron W. Fouty

Pvt. Byron W. Fouty, 19, of Waterford, Michigan, has been unaccounted for since since May 12, 2007, in Al Taqa, Iraq, when his patrol was attacked by enemy forces using automatic fire and explosives. He was initially listed as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown (DUSTWUN) and declared Missing-Captured on June 27, 2007. Fouty is assigned to the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York.

Ahmed Qusai Altaie

Spc. Ahmed K. Altaie, 41, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, was declared Missing-Captured on December 11, 2006. He was categorized as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown (DUSTWUN) when he allegedly was kidnapped while on his way to visit family in Baghdad, Iraq, on October 23, 2006. Altaie is assigned to the Provincial Reconstruction Team Baghdad.

Jill M. Metzger

Maj. Jill M. Metzger was listed as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown (DUSTWUN) after she was last seen at a Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, shopping center on September 5, 2006. Metzger is assigned to the 347th Mission Support Squadron, Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, and was on temporary duty in support of Operation Enduring Freedom at Manas Air Force Base, Kyrgyzstan.

Metzger was found alive on September 9, 2006.

Ronald D. Young

Chief Warrant Officer Ronald D. Young, 26, of Lithia Springs, Georgia, was captured after his AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopter was shot down near Karbala, Iraq, on March 24, 2003. He is assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment.

Young was rescued April 13, 2003, north of Baghdad.

David S. Williams

Chief Warrant Officer David S. Williams, 30, of Florida, was captured after his AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopter was shot down near Karbala, Iraq, on March 24, 2003. He is assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment.

Williams was rescued April 13, 2003, north of Baghdad.

James Riley

Sgt. James Riley, 31, of Pennsauken, New Jersey, was captured after an Iraqi ambush at Nasiriya on March 23, 2003. He is assigned to 507th Maintenance Company.

Riley was rescued April 13, 2003, north of Baghdad.

Patrick Miller

Pfc. Patrick Miller, 23, of Walter, Kansas, was captured after an Iraqi ambush at Nasiriya on March 23, 2003. He is assigned to 507th Maintenance Company.

Pfc. Jessica Lynch, 19, of Palestine, West Virginia, was missing after an Iraqi ambush at Nasiriya on March 23, 2003. She is assigned to 507th Maintenance Company.

Lynch was rescued April 2, 2003, by U.S. troops from Saddam Hospital in Nasiriya.
