It reminds me of who I was and what I wanted to be and how I haven't become that thing. More then anything, I wanted to be a poet. I don't want to give up on it.

This song by Smog, "River Guard" reminds me of the trip we made to the mountains. It is a reminder of how lonely I was. Our relationship was an empty one. Music such as this would give me hope that things would change for the better. Also, along with artists such as the Silver Jews, when I was 19 or so, the lyrics were an inspiration for my own. Where has that time gone?

When I write these days, the possible words swirl around in my head and it is difficult to arrange them together to describe what I am seeing. Also, the totality of the message or idea of the poem eludes me. I believe I am trying too hard when I write nowadays, because it is so sporadic and there is so much pent up creative energy (that sounds really cheesy, indeed) and it spills all over the place, all the words and descriptors. Words, or phrases can cling to me so easily. Today, I thought "every day I intrude on the passing scenery", and I don't know what to make of it exactly, or what to do with it.

I suppose I need to write more.
KAOS Playlists for Domenica
Domenicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04938621120091013752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11990322.post-27596199892567973762008-07-14T18:41:00.000-07:002008-07-14T18:42:30.310-07:00Dark Woods Casino Party for July 8th, 2008Modzilla - "Agony" - Welcome to Our Island - (Poteet)
Maitrey Akali - "Country Girl" - Yee-Haw! Two songs came on, almost one after the other, and both struck me as being particularly of their era, those being The Tornado's "Telstar" and Captain Groovy's "Captain and His Bubblegum Army". I'm sure much has been written about Telstar, and I recall the last thing I read was that it sounded like an outdated version of the future, and when it was released, listeners considered it sonically ground-breaking. "Telstar" does sound like the 50's version of our future in space, and that sort of utopian dream has passed, but the song is timeless. Yes, it is the musical equivalent of the original incarnation of Tomorrowland, but it is filled with awe and the wonder of possibility, which is also what makes Tomorrowland so fascinating. It is still cool sounding, and unlike so many other 50's/60's pop, it doesn't sound dated, both musically and because of the subject matter: the fascination with what could be.

"Captain Groovy and His Bubblegum Army", is more dated, because it filled with tics of the era, but it is still charming and catchy. How bubblegum to have a chorus shout "bu-bu-bu-bu-bu bubblegum army". The song sounds like an interlude or song intro to a Sesame Street lesson, filled with allusions to the pervasive psychedelic aesthetic infiltration of mainstream culture.
KAOS Playlists for Domenica
Domenicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04938621120091013752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11990322.post-62474530517608912532008-06-03T22:07:00.000-07:002008-06-03T22:48:47.608-07:00Dork Wooods Casino Party - 6/3/08Bo Diddley - "Gunslinger" - Bo Diddley is a Gunslinger
Magnetic Fields - "Born on a Train" - Charm of the Highway Strip - (Merge)
John Leyton - "Johnny Remember Me"
Loose Joints - "Is It All Over My Face?"

Paintings for Animals - "Wineslide" - Headphone Spiritual
John Schnall - "Herbert, You're Insane" - Songs from Midnight Matinee
Cheap Trick - "Voices" - Dream Police
Argumentix and Mattress - untitled - Echo Scratch Finale
Tyvek - "Air Conditioner" - 7" - (What's Your Rupture?)
Nami Shimada - "Sunshower (Larry Levan remix)"
Matmos - "Polychords" - Supreme Balloon - (Matador)

Tarantism - "Transmission from the Xerophyte" - Stuck to the Bottom - (Resipiscent)
Edward Ka-Spel - "Six Cats on a Dead Man's Chest" - Down in the City of Heartbreak and Needles - (Soleilmoon)
Stars of the Lid - "Daughters of Quiet Minds" - And the Refinement of their Decline - (Kranky)
Delia Derbyshire - "Moogies Bloogies" - The Complete Works

unknown artists/compiled by Alan Bishop - "India's Sound Museum of Oddities" - Radio India: The Eternal Dream of Sound - (Sublime Frequencies)
Blues Control - "End Zone" - Puff - (Fusetron Sound)
KAOS Playlists for Domenica
Domenicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04938621120091013752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11990322.post-85096207786208328922008-05-27T10:38:00.000-07:002008-05-27T10:39:00.059-07:00About the time they called me "Jackie"I've been obsessed with the song "Jackie" for the last few weeks, just like I've been obsessed with "Next" time before. Speaking of "Next", I printed off the words to the song at work wanting to memorize them and forgot them near my register the other day. I wonder if one of my co-workers will find it and read it and what they would think about me. Anyway, "Jackie" is originally by Jacques Brel, as is "Next" and they were both covered by my beloved Scott Walker - if this was the 90's, I would have made a I Love Scott Walker Zine by now.

When I visited Chehalis months ago to go to Yardbirds, I found a Marc Almond tape from the early 90's and I had left it untouched for a long time. I recently opened it (how long it has been since I took the wrapping off a cassette tape!) and only recently realized it has a cover of "Jackie" called "Jacky." How fortuitous. However, Almond's cover sounds basically like Scott Walker's version, except with cheesy 90's goth beats. They do nothing for the song, nor do the ominous, choral "ahhhhh's" near the end. He does a great version of it vocally, except it has those damn goth synth beats. I wonder why he even bothered. It isn't quite ruined, but it makes it sound dated.

The Marc Almond version:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgBcEbbiSNY

Scott Waker (oh, my hear melts!):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_XSXHm4vT4

Jacques Brel:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3naJrcVJwc
KAOS Playlists for Domenica
Domenicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04938621120091013752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11990322.post-80030448119928886542008-05-13T22:42:00.000-07:002008-05-13T22:50:42.863-07:00Dark Woods Casino Pantry for May 13th, 2008Icky Boyfriends - "Pay N'Pak" - A Love Obscene - (Menlo Park)
Half Japanese - "Thing with a Hook" - Loud and Horrible - (Drag City)
The Centimeters - "Dracula Gary" - Presents the Facts of Destiny - (WIN)
Cabaret Voltaire - "Speed Kills" - Zero Degrees East, a Mix by Fast Asleep Club

Blue Sabbath Black Cheer - "Boutranger Moor"
Tim Hecker - "Celestina" - Mirages - (Kranky)

Matmos - "Cloudhoppers" - Supreme Balloon - (Matador)
Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers - "I Want You to Be My Girl" - The Best of - (Rhino)
Assumarks Derfla - "The Crawfish" - The Shing-A-Ling Ain't the Thing, a mix by Mr. Fine Wine
Larry Williams - "Short Fat Fannie" - Specialty Records Greatest Hits - (Specialty)
The 5 Royales - "The Real Thing"
Sylvan - "We Don't Belong" - Dreambabes Volume Three - (RPM)
Bobby Bland - "I've Just Got to Forget You" - Two Steps from the Blues - (MCA)

Ralf Wehowsky - "Atmosphere" - Beziehung - (Table of the Elements)
Alan Licht and Aki Onda - "Tick Tock" - Everydays - (Family Vineyard)
Acid Mothers Temple and the Melting Paradise U.F.O - "In E" - In C - (Squealer)
Jad Fair and Naofumi Ishimaru - "Godzilla Invades Mars" - Half Monster - (Misc. He flaunts his influences in a joyful way, and pays tribute to them through his music, both conceptually and by experimentation with the form he is alluding to. He is a super-fan and scholar - critically dissecting genres, trends and pop and experimental music formulas. His work reminds me of an academic essay written in glee. The ideas or statements behind the album concept are as compelling as the music within.

Also, Supreme Balloon is fantastic. It isn't bad music at all, I just don't feel compelled to listen to it anymore. Something tells me I'll come back to it years from now. This is also true for the music of The Mountain Goats, who I used to adore to pieces, but somehow it isn't like it used to be.
KAOS Playlists for Domenica
Domenicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04938621120091013752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11990322.post-75869726097188049912008-04-13T19:16:00.000-07:002008-04-13T19:21:04.935-07:00serious synth fetishI-F's Mixed Up in the Hague is one of the most important discs I have ever encountered. It is a mix of electro and disco of the Italo variety. It very neatly sums up why I find synthesizers and vocoders so sexy and gorgeous. When people speak of Italo disco, they often refer to its space-like quality, and this is entirely accurate. This idea is succinctly summed in Peter Richard's song from the I-Robots italo disco comp: "walking in the neon, the lonely galaxy".

When I was a teenager, I had an inkling that I liked a certain kind of dance music that would be perfect for traversing a highway at night, lights glowing intermittently within the darkness. Certain techno music on the Seattle dance station was suggestive of what I would come to love, or 80's synth-pop such as Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys would also allude to it. It would take a while until I discovered just the right ingredients to make the perfect synth-pop concoction.

The music with Mixed Up in the Hague is suggestive of romance and danger, but mostly of the loneliness of space. At this moment in my life, this disc makes me sublimely happy. I can think of nothing that is as perfect. The transition between Alexander Robotnick and Mr. Flagio is especially tops. Today in the station came the new Weird Weeds album, "I Miss This" and W-S Burn's "Pleiades". I've also been listening to Prurient's "And Still, Wanting" a lot recently, the Carla Bozulich "Evangelista" album is also exciting. I love Prurient's aesthetic, and the name of the band truly speaks for the music. The lyrics from the song "Strict Ideas" often will pop up in my head unexpectedly, especially when I see a business man at my work:

"A well dressed man / has some very strict /ideas"
KAOS Playlists for Domenica
Domenicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04938621120091013752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11990322.post-23399363373712061962008-03-31T18:42:00.000-07:002008-04-01T17:46:38.484-07:00the endlessness of spaceHere's another Dark Woods Casino Party classic, from Alex Bundy's "Planetarium Music", subtitled "Traditional Psychedelic Electronic Music", released originally on Strange Attractors Audio House in 2002, I believe. This song sounds exactly as it should be, hanging out with Jack Horkeimer in outer space. This takes me back to my beloved Miami Planetarium.

Alex Bundy - Terrible
KAOS Playlists for Domenica
Domenicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04938621120091013752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11990322.post-61086606281766181232008-03-22T20:08:00.000-07:002008-03-22T20:20:15.340-07:00Dark Woods Casino Party for March 18th 2008OOIOO - untitled - Eye Remix EP - (Thrill Jockey)
Love - "Alone Again, Or" - Forever Changes
Fiery Furnaces - "Single" - EP - (Rough Trade)
Jean-Claude Vannier - "L'enfant au Royaume Des Mouches" - L'enfant Assasin Des Mouches - (B-Music)
Electric Light Orchestra - "Midnight Blue"
Quintron - "Backwards" - The Frog Tape - (Skin Graft)

Porest - "Composition of Sheep" - Prude Juice for the Heritage Swinger - (Seeland)
The Shadow Ring - "The Way of the World" - Hold Onto I.D - (Siltbreeze)
Kelly Harrell - "O! This is my favorite of their songs, because it contains many of my favorite topics: graves, handsome boys, ghosts, and wandering alone. This jumpy ditty with vocals by the amazing Grace Braun is a treat for any time of the year.

DQE - Halloween Song
KAOS Playlists for Domenica
Domenicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04938621120091013752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11990322.post-42644444595956042262008-03-08T21:04:00.000-08:002008-03-08T21:08:35.000-08:00we like the paper cutsMy life is a busy one, what with debt, having to move, finding a new house, and trying to figure out how to raise money for The Olympia Experimental Music Festival.
