I discovered a science fiction group two blocks from me! There's also a group that goes to movies and has dinner after, a group that tries different restaurants in the area, etc.

It's not dating, the meetings are usually in public places so it's safe, and you can see who is attending by RSVPing on the site.

Check it out. If you don't like a group, don't attend the next meeting. At worst, it will get you out and meeting folks, and you'll already have at least one thing to talk about, as you're both attending a meeting of a particular interest group.

There are currently 217 groups in Jacksonville:

www.meetup.com/cities/us/fl/jacksonville/groups/

Good luck!

--smacky (who vividly remembers being shy and friendless in a new town... more than once in his life!)smackyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01565035186269823636noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11932386.post-57313718129893537552008-08-11T18:56:00.000-04:002008-08-11T18:56:00.000-04:00You know, it NEVER works to intentionally go out T...You know, it NEVER works to intentionally go out TO meet someone. What does is just go somewhere, and if it's a place you like, keep going there. Often there are people who like going to that same place, and they might go on a fairly steady basis. Just as wanting to meet someone as you are.

But going out to a coffeeshop once in awhile and then hiding your head in a laptop or something is not conducive to meeting someone. Going there at a fairly set time, the same evenings out of a week, because you LIKE to go there, MAY end up with you meeting someone doing just the same thing.

But you have to give it a chance. AND LOOK AROUND YOU, AND USE EYE CONTACT. If someone catches your eye, a simple smile is all you need to do, then go back to whatever.

Another great place to meet people is at a science fiction convention. No kidding!Graysithnoreply@blogger.com
