As I watched, I suddenly remembered this part of being a teenager. End of the year again. Christmas decorations are already being seen at shopping malls.

This on hindsight has been a difficult year to manoeuvre. At the begining of the year it could be seen that inflation would be on the rise this year due to large global demands (or is it speculation?, we will never know as it is probably a little of both). Prices of raw material for construction, in particular steel for us, rose at least 30% in the first half of the year.

With the majority of our work being prefabricated structural steel and also the high use of steel reinforcement bars in the reinforced concrete work, it became extremely difficult to price/bid for work.

Then the story of the second half of the year was the globalisation of the financial crisis in America. That story is presently still unfolding for us here in Malaysia and South East Asia.

We have had just sufficient work to keep us sane this year. Strangely enough it has been the year when we have had the largest values of inquiries since the last 15 years.

We hope that 2009 will be a better year, but realistically realize that the present state of the stockmarkets of the world is probably a half year early indicator of what the real state of the economy is going to be like come next year. It is grim and we will have to be reactive to the requirements of the times.

The schedule for a project in Penang for ancillary works at a mini blast furnace is due to be completed at the end of this month. Work has progressed smoothly and safely.

The only minor hiccup has been the paperwork for the certification of progress billings on the consulting engineers side. The payment from the client has been prompt and on time.

Due out, we hope to be successful in bidding for additional packages in the project as price of material in the construction market has trended toward some stability.

New Project

We will be starting work on a new project for a European Multinational investment in Shah Alam, Malaysia. The project is for a food manufacturing facility. Due to confidentiality, we are unable to write more about it.

It has been a difficult year in terms of securing projects due to the severe inflation within the construction sector. Products that we use have, in some cases, gone up as much as 30% in the half year or past two quarters. We are keeping a close eye on inflation but hope to bid more aggresively for work this second half of the year.
