In the Path of our AncestorsIf you're down with outrigger paddling, then check this out. Soul Fabric Productions is set to release "Imua! In the Path of our Ancestors" sometime in Summer '09. It speaks to all of the reasons we paddle outrigger canoes. Big Mahalo to Soul Fabric Productions for making this happen.

...as taken from the Soul Fabric Web Site...
Imua! is a chronicle of the historic 1400 mile paddle of a seafaring group of South Pacific Islanders along the entire span of the Hawaiian island chain.

The film reveals the rich cultural roots of the outrigger canoe by crafting an in-depth portrait of the Voyaging Society’s dynamic cultural and spiritual leader and a select number of the team of paddlers that he has assembled. Imua! tells the story of the voyage itself and gives voice to a number of Hawaiian kupuna who shed light on the rich tradition of the outrigger canoe.

The main characters of Imua! are the expert seamen who navigate the open ocean using only the swells and celestial bodies to guide their way. They are the boat builders who carve massive canoes from the trunks of single trees. They are the village elders guiding young warriors to rebuild their ancestral fish ponds with 200,000 boulders stacked by hand. They are the keepers of ancestral knowledge revealed when they “talk story” with their community. Together, these are the individuals responsible for curating their community’s traditions.

Imua! documents this epic journey, while painting a portrait of the paddlers and exploring the history, tradition, and cultural relevance of outrigger canoe paddling in the Pacific Islands.

peep out the trailer... http://www.soulfabric.net/soul_fabric_films/The_Voyagers.html
or
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=40575513

markeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05969274436690471517noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11808848.post-19715039711773029412008-07-23T13:29:00.000-07:002008-07-23T13:47:57.404-07:00Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce to you Mr. Josh GironLadies and gentlemen, boys and girls of all ages, let me be the first to introduce to you Town and Country Bodyboards very own Mr. Josh Giron. Big mahalo to Mr. Paul Passa for the interview and Josh Giron taking the time to share a part of his life.....here we go!

JG: Aloha!!! My name is Josh Giron, I am 21 years young, and I was born and raised on this beautiful rock that everyone calls Maui. I love to bodyboard, hang with my friends, and go riding on my 2007 Kawasaki ZX6R Ninja. Im currently working as a certified cable installer for Oceanic Time Warner Cable. I live in a 2 bedroom 1.5 bath house with my lovely girlfriend Robbi and our little Jack Russell pup named bear. I love life, and the people in it, and im always STOKED to be out in the water!!!

T&C: What are your future plans?
JG: My future plans are to travel the world to surf, meet new people, make it to Moto GP, make lots of money, buy a house, get married, and start a family.

T&C: How has bodyboarding change your life?
JG: It has definitely kept me out of trouble and out of the house, its like the greatest hobby ever. If im not working, then im out in the water. Bodyboarding is something you can do when the surf is up or down. Usually I go skim boarding at the beach on small days, then hitting up the secret spots on the bigger ones.

T&C: Who's your biggest influence?
JG: My biggest influence would be all the Maui rippers out there, Hutaff, Kaiwi, Militante, then you got the Maui boys like Kona K., the Romeros, T.C.J., too much to name! But for the most part, my bro Dayne would be my main influence. We've been surf buddies since the tightie whitie days... Always psyching out each other and charging big. We are always battling each other out in the water. If it wasn't for him, I probably wouldnt have gotten this far to where im at now.

T&C: Any advice for people that are bodyboarding that want to enter Bodyboard contests?
JG: Just relax and have fun, dont pressure yourself. Just take it one contest at a time. Get used to the competitive line up, make sure you got your maneuvers lined up for your wave. Guys can be really aggressive out there, its not like your normal surf session and your local spot. But just have fun and make lots of new friends for the most part! And to include to that, contest cost a little more than a plate lunch, so make sure your working mad overtime, or you got killer sponsors!

T&C: Since you live in Maui what do you do when the surf is flat?
JG: When the surf is flat, I usually go out on a nice long cruise with my girlfriend on my street bike, or usually round up the boys to go surf the flowrider out here... DA RUSH! Sometimes I like to stay home and veg out, watch some Moto GP or World Super Bike racing on tv.

T&C: Tell me about the T&Cbodyboard team?
JG: We got Shea Sevilla, whos in the service currently fighting for our country right now, Mark Gervacio, who is a high school hawaiian studies teacher, Dayne Kim, a very out going kid, always island hopping and just having fun meeting new peeps, Jordan Kilkenny, the underground ripper from our neighbor island, and Steve Jackson, whos our east coast rider that holds it down for T&C, and Mark from Fixinsport.

T&C: Do you think the Bodyboard industry is growing?
JG: I think that the bodyboarding industry is getting bigger and better everyday. Ive never seen more groms, and especially girls stepping it up in the bodyboarding community. More and more companies are also blowing up in the bodyboarding industry with cool new boards and gear. You see all kinds of new brands, styles, and shapes of bodyboards now days. Youll never know what to expect what kind of new stuff thats coming out.

T&C: Any last words you want to add or advice for anyone?
JG: First of all, I would like to thank my team manager from T&C, Paul for making all of this happen, and for hooking me up for the past 4 years, also, Kelvinne and the South Pacific Surf Shop crew for sponsoring me.
Gotta thank momma for bringing me into this world!!! I would like to make a shout out to all my boys Kim Chee, Wild Michael, Shepley, Fontanilla, Hudson, Chartrand, and everyone else who I didnt mention for being there for me!!!

markeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05969274436690471517noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11808848.post-13260578548396157552008-02-03T21:19:00.000-08:002008-02-03T21:51:39.675-08:00Town and Country Surf Goes Big

markeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05969274436690471517noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11808848.post-49020080072545366672007-11-23T08:45:00.000-08:002007-11-23T08:56:24.372-08:00Town and Country 'Bodyboards '08

Just in time for the '08 Holiday Season, our friends from the islands Town and Country Bodyboards release two new board designs for you riding and gift giving pleasure. Not the Steven Jackson most of you are thinking about. He’s not the Pacer with a record, but a body boarder with a Town and Country East Coast twist. Here is a glimpse of the man from Jersey who reps T & C Body boards to the fullest.

Oh, but before I forget… For all of you young booty out there who think those in the 30+ age group can’t do it anymore on a body board, check yourselves. For guys like Kainoa, Stewart, Vargas, Tamega, Antipala, Reale, Press, Lyman, Burks, Dale, Maligro, Kinimaka, Blanes, and Concepcion in the 30+ crowd... we’ll throw it down with all of you young bucks and have you wondering…”How did they do that?”

Introducing Jersey’s finest, Steven Jackson. (Mahalo, to da’ Braddah Paul Pasa at T & C for the interview and pic):

T&C: For those who aren't familiar with you, what is your name?
-Steve Jackson, but most people call me "Action."

T&C: How did you get your nickname?
- I got stuck with it in high school. I had this crazy algebrateacher named Mr. Emmons. He had all these crazy little catchphrases like, "One is fun, but zero is our hero!" He was the firstone to call me "Action Jackson" and it just kind of stuck. I usedto hate it, but I've gotten used to it over the years. Most peoplesay the nickname fits, since I always seem to be running aroundtrying to make something happen.

T&C: Where are you from?-NEW JERSEY!T&C: How old are you, and how long have you been bodyboarding?
- I just turned 32. I've been bodyboarding for 19 years, now.

T&C: How has the sport changed from when you first started?
- It's changed a lot. When I started, back in 1988, there wasmore money and sponsor support on the professional level. Theriding style and maneuvers have progressed since then, and become waymore technical. Back then, Mike Stewart doing big air forward 360's wasprogressive. Now riding has advanced to ARS's and flips. I stillthink Stewart is the best all-around rider in bodyboarding, but Ithink guys like Hubb and Tamega, and the Australians as well, havehelped push the sport to a competely different level. Plus, thesedays bodyboarders are charging bigger and heavier spots than everbefore.

T&C: What are your favorite home breaks?
- I like riding Jenks, Hoffa’s, Brielle Road, Mongolians,Main Beach, and during the winter I'll ride Manasquan Inlet. Igrew up riding Inlet, and it can be really good on a big southswell, but it gets so crowded with beginner surfers during thesummer that it's gotten dangerous. It's not even worth it.

T&C: Do you have a favorite wave that you have traveled to?
- I haven't had the chance to travel nearly as much as I wouldlike, but there is one spot. Domes in Puerto Rico is a really funwave. I'm dying to go back to that place.

T&C: What do you do when you're not bodyboarding?
- I manage 3rd Ave Surf Shop in Spring Lake, NJ. I'm a sales repfor No Friends and Mike Stewart/Science Bodyboards, and a rider/rep for T&C Bodyboards. I'm the Marketing Manager for theUSBA National Championship Tour. I compete on the USBA protour. I'm a correspondent for Crysis Bodyboard magazine. Like I said, I'm always running around trying to make somethinghappen.

T&C: Can you tell me about the T&C team? Who's who?
- The T&C team has some solid riders. Mark and Josh kill it, and Geraldinecharges harder than most guys.

T&C: What's the outlook for TCBB in 2008? Any exciting things going on, ornewproducts?
- There's all sorts of cool things coming up for '08! I could tell youabout them, but then I'd have to kill ya...lol! Seriously, though, there'ssome good stuff in the works for next year. Keep checkinghttp://www.tcbodyboards.com/ for all the latest updates and details.

T&C: Where do you see the sport of BBing going?
- I think the sport is at a pivotal point, right now. I think the sporthas a legitimate chance to flourish here in the US but it all depends on theriders making a go at the pro ranks, how hard they're all willing to work tomake it happen, and how willing they are to make personal sacrifices. Nogoal is ever achieved without some sort of sacrifice along the way.

T&C: What role do you think you play in the BBing industry?-
- I'm just an underground rider from New Jersey trying to open some doorsfor the next generation of bodyboarders.

T&C: If you weren't involved in BBing, what would you be doing?
- Actually, I had a glimpse of what my life would be like withoutbodyboarding. I was landlocked, living in North Carolina, for a year and ahalf. With the exception of one really good friend (what's up, Simon?), mylife was pretty depressing...working 40-50hrs a week in a supermarket inCharlotte. I was going crazy without the ocean! So, I think withoutbodyboarding, I'd probably be in a psych ward somewhere doing my bestimpersonation of Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest...lol.

T&C: Any suggestion for the up and coming groms?
- Yeah. Work hard, stay focused, and don't take opportunities for granted. Appreciation for what you’ve got, and loyalty to those who are willing tohelp you out goes a very long way and speaks volumes about what kind ofperson you are.

T&C: Any last comments?
- I'd like to thank Paul Pasa at T&C Bodyboards, everyone at No Friends,Crysis mag, DSO eyewear, Jason and Beta Bitzer, Larry McGinn, Mike Murphy,Lou Brzozowski, Manny Vargas (for his constant encouragement), KiraLewellyn, Guilherme Tamega, Ryan Rhodes, and everybody else who has helpedto support or inspire me along the way. I owe you all a tremendous amountof gratitude.

------------interview PAU---------------------------------------------------------------------

markeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05969274436690471517noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11808848.post-52308316609604038532007-05-02T08:17:00.000-07:002007-05-02T08:24:49.570-07:00ZOO/STOKED MENTORING/MIKE GIANT/
he Zoo York Institute is proud to announce an exclusive collaboration with renowned artist, Mike Giant, and NYC non-profit youth organization, Stoked Mentoring.

This noteworthy three-way partnership will yield a limited-edition skateboard deck and T-shirt emblazoned with custom artwork from Mike Giant that’s a stylish tribute to Zoo York, Stoked, and NYC’s five boroughs. Set to release in June, a portion of all proceeds from the sale of both items will be donated to Stoked Mentoring to help further its mission of developing “Successful Teens with Opportunity, Knowledge, Experience, and Determination” through action sports, mentoring, and coaching.

“The Stoked crew feels extremely fortunate to have been supported so strongly by Zoo York since day one,” says Stoked Mentoring Founder and Executive Director Steve Larosiliere. “For the past two years, Zoo has provided us with office space, resources, and access to their team, which has allowed us to serve over 120 at-risk kids in NYC. We’re excited to finally work with Zoo on a project, and we’re honored to have Giant provide the artwork because he’s amazingly talented and a good friend to Stoked.”

“It’s very inspiring to have the Stoked program in-house because it puts us in direct contact with the kids who really drive what we’re all about,” continues Zoo York President Marci Tapper. “By working with Stoked, we can positively impact the lives of local kids and authentically support and encourage the surrounding youth scene here in the city.”

To celebrate the official release of this highly-anticipated collaboration, and to help raise awareness and much-needed support for Stoked Mentoring, a special launch party / fund-raiser will go down Wednesday night, June 6th at NYC hot spot, Pink Elephant. The aptly named event, Stoked Sessions II, will run from 8-11pm and feature live performances by several top DJ’s, an open bar stocked with premium spirits, and event attendees will have the opportunity to purchase collab decks and T-shirts before anyone else. All are welcome to attend this 21+ event, and there will be a required charitable donation upon entry that will go directly to Stoked.

c-lonoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11808848.post-1170271147421979692007-01-31T11:15:00.000-08:002007-01-31T11:19:07.476-08:00Something we can aspire...
That perfect day. An incredible day of bodyboarding went down to the wire with Hardy taking out the first prize cheque of $20,000 in the 10th annual Human Cronulla Shark Island Challenge held in near perfect 6 - 8ft waves. Hardy was on fire all day and was a well-deserved winner.
The last day was held in unbelievable 4 - 8 ft conditions. One of the best days ever seen for the CSIC. Riders and officials were put on hold until the last minute by contest organiser Mark Fordham until conditions became more that favorable.

Conditions before the first heat we cross shore and raining though as the tide started to rise the winds eased and turned a light offshore, the waves went from 3 - 4 feet to a solid 6 - 8ft for the semis and final. The wind come up slightly for the final thanks to a heavy rain squall and with fading sunlight the riders faced every challenge imaginable. As the sets peaked a 8ft those in the final who thought they were safe with just big tubes were totally mistaken, it was Hardy who was pushing it that one step higher, busting some of the biggest inverts ever seen out there.
With the 25min final starting at 5pm the finalist knew they had to pick and choose their waves wisely. Waves were pumping in, set after set. With the sun already setting in the west and the city traffic busy shuffling home... The Island turned it on for the Biggest Final in Years... Ryan Hardy, Jeff Hubbard, Damian King & John Showell... without dispute... this was one of the hardest finals anybody would dream of being in.

Within seconds of the hooter, Cronulla local John Showell took to a massive bomb... stamping his local authority all over it... Hardy then answered, followed by Hubbard then Kingy... this was one of the closest contests we've ever witnessed.
The final belonged to the Western Australian, huge tube time and massive air time, a devastating display of pure hardcore surfing at its best.
Right from round one Hardy was showing the form that has seen him win two Australian tour events and is now in serious contention for his first IBA Men's World Tour title this year.
After the presentation Hardy was lost for words and over run by emotion.
"I can not believe I have actually won this event" screamed an elated Hardy. "Winning this event is everything, I have tried over the years but I have just never been in a good position. Today the waves were just pumping and I just went for it so yeah, super stoked."
After being lifted to shoulders of King and Hubbard and doused with the finest bottle of Champagne Hardy expressed how he as a younger grommet was inspired by the Cronulla bodyboarders when starting out..
"I would like to say one thing and that is a special thanks to the Cronulla locals especially the original crew Fordy, Nugget, Percy, Wingnut, Rissole, Brett and Doug just to mention a few. You guys not only inspired me but a whole generation. If it was not for all of you we wouldn't have an event like the Challenge."

Runner-up, Cronulla young gun John Showell had his best win out at his home break to date and looks set to challenge Hardy for the title.

markeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05969274436690471517noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11808848.post-1154060686556672202006-07-27T21:09:00.000-07:002006-07-27T21:24:46.686-07:00Wear Your Sun Screen!!!!!
How'z it my friends in Fixins.Com land. Our braddah's and sistah's from Hawaiian Island Creations have developed a new product to keep you safe and your skin looking really good. Introducing the HIC sunscreen line. This new venture from HIC is not a whimsical stab at entering the sun screen market, but rather HIC has teamed up with two guys from Fortune 500 companies with an MBA from Harvard (that's in Boston) + a PHD from Cambridge University (that's in merry ol' England). It protects from all UVA + UVB harmful rays. It contains Avobenzone (the most superior UVA protection + absorber around). The new Hawaiian Island Creations sun screen is currently available in South Bay (that's in Southern California) core surfshops, but no fret, the goods will be coming to a shop near you.

Big mahalo to da' Braddah B @HIC for the pic and info. Even though Jacob, as his friends would most definitely vouch, kills it, he hasn’t allowed it to get to his head. He has made a remarkable name for himself as an extremely talented free-surfer. His OTW and Pipe performances this past season on the North Shore were mind-boggling. Yet, over these past few years he has also proven to be a tremendous threat to competitors on the IBAHawai’i contest circuit (as well as in national competitions), consistently winning and placing in events against many of bodyboarding’s best at both professional and amateur levels. Now, with that much said, let’s sit down for a moment and see what this humble Hawaiian has to say…

T&C: So Jacob, enlighten us about your self? Who are you?
JR: My name is Jacob Romero, and I’m twenty years old. I’m from Waiehu, Maui, but now live on Oahu. I’m currently going to Honolulu Community College on Oahu. I have two brothers, Josh and Jonah, that bodyboard as well. I hate working. Right now I’m working at Alamo Car rentals to save up for my trips. It is the worst job I’ve ever had. Cheeeee! Nah, work is work. You know how that goes. I love Jesus Christ. Without him nothing would be possible. I go to church and Bible studies. Attending church and bible studies has taught me that being humble can lead to many good things. So yeah, everything I do is for Jesus. I also have a beautiful girlfriend named Tiani. Okay, Toyota Tacomas are the best trucks ever. Home cook meals are the best meals ever. I love pets. I currently have a gold fish. I think drugs are for losers. You can have fun without them. Shootz! I don’t know where I’m going with this, but I’m just super stoked on life right now. Life is great!

T&C: Sounds like everything is going good for you Jacob. So, let me ask you, how long have you been bodyboarding? Who got you into it?
JR: I’ve been bodyboarding for about 7 years now and competing for about 4. My older brother Joshua Romero and his friends really got me hooked on it. Back in the day, they took me bodyboarding at this one spot right by my house. It was pretty big at the time, but I was super stoked to get in the water. From that day on, I was on it whether it was 1 foot or 5 feet.

The first bodyboard I ever bought, on my own, was a Morey. You know, the ones they sell at Costco. It was one of the best days of my life. I was so stoked. From that day on, Bodyboarding has been my life.

T&C: So you’re going to be entering your second year of school at Honolulu Community College. How’s that going for you? And has the move from Maui to Oahu influenced your riding at all?
JR: Yeah, this fall will be my 2nd year of school. Actually, I’m pretty stoked on going to school. I hated high school. After graduation, I was always telling myself that I would never go to college. But after working at Aloha Airlines for about a year and a half, I suffered a back injury. Something needed to change. So I told myself that I didn’t want to do this my whole life and made the decision to go to school on Oahu. Going to school on Oahu has definitely had an enormous influence on my bodyboarding. You can, basically, surf everyday. Whether it’s Half Point (Sandy Beach) or the NS (North Shore), there is always something to be ridden. Not to mention, the waves on Oahu are heavier and far more consistent. So I guess you could say that living on Oahu has pushed my riding into bigger and heavier waves.

T&C: In your eyes, who are the guys that have pushed you to surf better over the years, as well as now?
JR: To be truthful, there are so many bodyboarders that have always pushed me, from contest surfing to free surfing. The guys who have always pushed me are Jimmy Hutaff, Leroy Kaiwi, my brothers Jonah and Josh, Kona Kuailani, Shea Sevilla, Travis Calvan, Wesley Calvan, Riley Dutro, Kyle Hayashi, Nick Heyd, and most everyone from Maui. My good friends from Kauai (Kainoa Lum, Tim Hamilton, David Phillips, Adam Bice, Pyper Lullen, and everyone from Boogie Nation), Oahu (too many to be named), and the Big Island (FDB and Nathan Rubio) have also pushed me to surf better over the years. Jeff Hubbard, Spencer Skipper, and Mitch Rawlins are my all time favorite bodyboarder- the big names I look up to.

T&C: What would your ideal session consist of?
JR: My ideal session would consist of my friends and I just having fun bodyboarding. It could be 1 foot and onshore or 7 feet with offshore winds. As long as we are out there having fun, it would make any surf session epic. Cheering on your friends from the shoulder to hit a heavy section or to pull into huge barrels are the best surf sessions ever. Sessions are really what you make of them. You can always have fun even when the waves are super crappy. You just need to have the right mind set. Bodyboarding should always fun.

T&C: Do you have any plans for travel this next year or in the immediate future?
JR: Definately, I’m planning a trip to Australia with my good buddy, Jason Bitzer, this July. I also just purchased a ticket to Mexico. A bunch of Hawaiians are planning to go as well, so it should be really fun. The USBA tour is coming up, too. I’m planning to compete in the contests being held in New York and New Jersey. It’ll be my first time bodyboarding on the east coast of the US. For the immediate future and next year, I’ve always wanted to go to Tahiti, Fiji, Philippines, Chile, Brazil, Europe, and Western Samoa. I don’t know really? We’ll see. Traveling is always fun. As long as I’m meeting new people, venturing to new spots, site seeing, and experiencing new things, those elements make a trip epic. To list a few of the places that I have traveled, I’ve been to: Rarotonga, Puerto Rico, California, the Hawaiian Islands, and Japan.

T&C: What has been your main focus, in terms of progressing your surfing, as of late?
JR: Having fun is the best way to progress my surfing. Yeah, I’ve also been running and doing push-ups and sit-ups like every other day. Keeping in shape and training are the basic keys. If there are waves, I’ll surf everyday. My main focuses are riding bigger, heavier waves and trying to hit any section. I guess you could say, just getting more confident in bigger waves.

T&C: What are some of your short-term and long-term goals in bodyboarding?
JR: First and foremost, having a good time. If you’re not having fun at what you do, then why do it? Winning the USBA tour would be awesome. Getting my name out there. More exposure would be epic. A signature board model would be sick. Getting more shots in the magazines and videos. Competing as much as I can. Hopefully one day I can qualify for the World Super Tour and compete against the world’s best.

T&C: In terms of progressive riding, where do you see bodyboarding heading in the next few years?
JR: I think bodyboarding is heading in a healthy direction right now. There are some new magazines coming out. Some new tours such as the USBA tour that will help the US riders make a name for themselves. There are more bodyboarding companies starting up, such as Boogie Nation. Bodyboarding is epic right now. As far as progressive riding is concerned, the fact that bodyboarders can function and ride thicker, heavier waves than surfers, will push the sport further. Which is happening. Bodyboarding will always be around.

T&C: Any words of counsel to those just getting into bodyboarding? Especially the groms.
JR: Ummmm…all I have to say is stay focused, stay positive, set goals, be humble, and stay out of the drug scene. Always have fun and enjoy the life that Jesus Christ has given to you. Having a bad attitude and thinking that you are the best will get you nowhere. There is always someone out there that is better than you. And just make sure, at all times, that you are having fun.

T&C: Any last words? (shout outs to sponsors, family, thanks, etc.)
JR: First and foremost, I would like to thank Jesus Christ because without him none of this would be possible. I would especially like to thank my mom and dad, my two brothers, and everyone who has helped me out over the years. My girlfriend Tiani. She has been really supportive and is always there for me. Danny Black (bodyboardershawaii.com), Ryan Beppu (beppuphoto.com), and all of the photographers that help and have helped out all of the Hawaiian bodyboarders. Lastly, I would like to thank my sponsors: Hi-Tech in Maui, T&C Bodyboards, Chris Willington, and KICKS fins,Thank you God!

Interview with Jacob Romero By Evan Fa, T&C Bodyboards Staff Writer. Read on as he tells you about his life on and off the island, as well as his views on the state of bodyboarding and his goals. Pay attention my friends....introducing Town and Country's Shea Sevilla.

On a personal note, I would like to send a big mahalo out to Shea for serving his country and protecting our freedom!

NAME: Shea Sevilla
YEARS ON EARTH: 18 RESIDENCE: Maui, Hawaii
TIME ON A BODYBOARD: 5 years. Mostly prone, and drop knee for fun.
DESTINATIONS: Major Hawaiian Islands, California, Western Samoa

1. T&C: How was it growing up on Maui?
S.S.: Well, I think Maui is the best place for anyone to grow up. It’s really laid back and mellow. Everybody knows each other here, so if your cool with one person your cool with um’ all. The surf gets real good during the winter and sometimes during the summer.

2. T&C: How is the body boarding scene over there?
S.S.: The scene is huge! Everyone body boards. It’s so sick because everyone pushes each other to do more and more mental things in the water. The riders consist of all the boys from Waiehu, Paku, Paia, Lahaina, and Kihei. They all kill it.

3. T&C: Who has influenced your surfing the most?
S.S.: There are too many to name. But some of my biggest influences in body boarding are Jacob and Jonah Romero, Jimmy Hutaff, the Kauai Killas, Travis Calvan, Kona K, Rilley Dutro, Uncle Leroy, and, of course, Jeff Hubbard!

4. T&C: With everyone going so big these days, what is the next level of high performance body boarding from your perspective?
S.S.: Who are the guys doing this? I think the next big thing is tow-in body boarding at Jaws. That’s where it’s at; just catching huge waves. The next step after that is to start busting out there.

5. T&C: What is the most mental thing you’ve seen anyone do in the water?
S.S.: I think just body boarding, in general, is pretty mental. These days, everybody is going big and just launching really high. So yeah, just body boarding.

6. T&C: If you could surf anywhere in the world, with anyone you wanted, at any size, where and who would be there?
S.S.: I would love to go back to Samoa with all my buddies and just score it because there was this perfect day while I was there while I was there the last time, but, unfortunately, I couldn’t surf. It was 6-8 foot, off-shore perfection. We couldn’t surf because it was Sunday and that is the time of rest.

7. T&C: In your own words, what has body boarding done for you?
S.S.: I think it’s a great way for young people to stay out of trouble and keep busy doing something. I mean, that’s what it did for me. We all know you only do it for the fun and not the money because you can’t become a millionaire bodyboading.

8. T&C: What is your view on contests?
S.S.: I think contests are great because through them you get your name out there. Not only that, you also make lots of lasting friendships. At every contest, you meet new people and see the sport growing. Basically, I think the best part of doing contests is the friendly comradery.

9. T&C: What are you goals, in terms of body boarding and life in general?
S.S.: Some of my goals are to keep having as much fun as I do body boarding. In life, I want to travel the world, own my own home, and live happily ever after.

10. T&C: Where are you at these days?
S.S.: Well, right now I’m in Texas serving the United States Air force. I’m serving my country and seeing the world.

11. T&C: What do you do in order to keep your sanity from not being able to surf? S.S.: I always keep updated on how the surf is on Maui through friends and the internet. I also have all my clips on my video camera, and I also watch lots of body boarding videos.

12. T&C: What is your favorite type of music?
S.S.: Actually, I listen to anything and everything. I wasn’t a big fan of country, but in Texas everybody listens to it. So I’m starting to listen to some of it. I like rock and rap. It keeps me amped.

13. T&C: Any last words?
S.S.: I would like to thank GOD for each and every breath I take. I would also like to thank my sponsors: Town and Country Body boards and The Foam Company. Also, to all my friends on Maui…keep boogie boarding.

14. S.S.: Last of all, Thank you to Mark Blanes (aka. Mark Well B), Fixins Sports, TCbodyboard staff writer Evan Fa, these are the people that made this interview happen. “If things seem to suck just hang in there because it only gets better!” Shea Sevilla

-----------------pau-----------------------
mahalo to PAUL PASA @ Town and Country for the interview. aloha!

markeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05969274436690471517noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11808848.post-1146733011464673092006-05-04T01:40:00.000-07:002006-05-04T02:02:43.126-07:00Boogie Nation!

I know the flyer says Hawaii Tour. Whoever says bodyboarding is just for little kids, just doesn't know what's up.

"Boogie Nation is the culmination of years of documenting world class and underground bodyboarding here in Hawaii, and worldwide. Bodyboarders push the limits everywhere they go and this video proves it. Since it was born here, so it will rule here: the boogieboard…its Hawaiian style. Likewise, by a vast majority, the video features Hawaiian riders. Including the best riders to ever grace a boog: Stewart, Skipp, Hubb; as well as the new up & coming amateurs, Bud Miyamoto, Pyper Lluellen, and Mike Murphy all getting their first segments. Destinations like Tahiti, Mexico, Australia and even Iceland. Incredible underground local talent combined with the famous and the far-away, wrapped in a stimulating mix colors and sounds. Some dub it a crowd-pleaser."

INFO:
Laemelle Theaters (Santa Monica 4)
1332 2nd Street, Santa Monica, 90401
May 4th, 7:00pm, prizes and a sick bodyboarding video!

Come see Jeff Hubbard BUUUUUST like THIS!!!!

And watch his younger brother Dave, kill it with a DROP KNEE ROLL!!!!
