Although formal religious tests for federal office are constitutionally prohibited, they have long been a fact of political life in presidential elections. John Kennedy remains the only nonProtestant ever elected President, and the major political parties have only nominated three others for president, all Democrats. The "Judeo-Christian tradition" notwithstanding, no major party has ever nominated a Jew for president-let alone a Buddhist, Hindu, Mormon, Muslim, or unbeliever.

Against this electoral history, it was perhaps predictable that mainstream Christian commentators would feel free to legitimate religious attacks on Mitt Romney during the Republican presidential primaries on the ground that Mormonism is a "false" religion. Ironically, however, the Mormon church periodically intervenes in initiative and ratification campaigns to defend "true" or "divine" principles that it believes ought to be enforced by law and reflected in public policy. How upset are folks entitled to get when their church is labeled "false" in an electoral campaign, if the church itself regularly participates in such campaigns on the basis of religious truth and falsity?

My purpose in this Essay is to examine the deployment of religious truth-claims in electoral politics, through the lenses of Gov. Romney's unsuccessful campaign for the Republican nomination and the LDS church's participation in the successful Proposition 8 campaign to ban same-sex marriage in California. I will argue that in contemporary electoral politics, attacks on the truth of a religion make little sense in light of the pluralism and postmodernism that now characterize the contemporary United States, but are a likely consequence when the religion itself introduces such truth-claims into electoral politics.

I begin with the failure of Enlightenment to eclipse belief over the last several centuries, and the ongoing and paradoxical dissolution of traditional modes of belief despite that failure. Postmodern pluralism has precluded belief from re-assuming the preEnlightenment dominance that Christianity once enjoyed, and is encouraging a different understanding of truth, not as a static relation between what believers think and how the world "really" is, but as a dynamic function of dialogue and interpretation by believers in the world.

The multiplicity, indeterminacy, customization, and ubiquity of contemporary religious truth-claims now prevent any religion from plausibly asserting in public contexts that its claims are true to the exclusion of all others. In a plural and postmodern culture like that of the United States, the introduction of religious truth-claims into electoral campaigns presents distinct disadvantages and dangers to liberal democracy, particularly when done from the right. I illustrate the deleterious effects of such claims, and the corresponding virtues of public reason, by reference to the attacks on Romney's Mormonism during the Republican primaries and the Mormon church's support of Proposition 8. I close with some observations about the necessary priority of pluralism to truth in electoral politics.

In March 14th, 2007, the Obama Campaign told the LA Times that Obama was not a "practicing Muslim."

But his official website says: "Obama Has Never Been A Muslim, And Is a Committed Christian."

This is the basic problem with Obama -- his dissimulation.

	Obama's father was a Muslim. Obama's grandfather was a Muslim. Obama's stepfather was a Muslim. Sarah, who Obama calls grandmother is a Muslim. Obama's stepbrothers and stepsisters are Muslims. Obama, by birth and by blood was a Muslim. For a time, he was educated and lived as a Muslim. Only Obama knows what he is today. What follows is what is publicly known about Obama and religion.
1960	Obama's mother Anna is often reported as being an atheist, but her parents, Stanley and Madelyn Dunham, were Baptists. While living in Mercer Island, Washington, during the 1950's, Madelyn and Stanley shed their Methodist and Baptist upbringing and began attending, along with Anna, Sunday services at the East Shore Unitarian Church in nearby Bellevue. "In the 1950s, this was sometimes known as 'the little Red church on the hill,' " said Peter Luton, the church's senior minister, referring to the leftist bent of the church'stor. Skepticism, the kind that Stanley embraced and passed on to his daughter, was welcomed here. Senior was a Muslim, as was his extended family.
1968	After Anna's divorce from Barack Senior, she marries Lolo Soetoro Mangunharjo. Anna will have a daughter with Lolo, named Maya. Soetoro, a Muslim, promptly moves his new family to Jakarta, Indonesia, the worlds most populous Muslim country.
1968	The "An American Expat in Southeast Asia" blog reports that Obama's Indonesian schooling began when he was entered into the Roman Catholic, Franciscus Assisi Primary School on January 1, 1968 and sat in class 1B. He was registered under the name Barry Soetoro, serial number 203. School documents listed Barry Soetoro as an Indonesian citizen and his religion was listed as Islam. He will spend three years at Franciscus. Catholic schools accept non-Catholics worldwide. Non-Catholic students are typically excused from religious instruction and ceremony.
1971	Obama's family moves from H Ramir Street to Dempo Street and Obama enters the 4th grade at the Besuki Primary School, a government school. He was enrolled as Barry Soetoro, Muslim.
1971	All Indonesian students are required to study religion at school and a young Barry Soetoro, being a Muslim, would have been required to study Islam daily in school. He would have been taught to read and write Arabic, to recite his prayers properly, to read and recite from the Quran and to study the laws of Islam. In his autobiography, "Dreams From My Father," Obama mentions studying the Quran and describes the public school as "a Muslim school." According to Tine Hahiyary, one of Obama's teachers and the principal from 1971 through 1989, Barry actively took part in the Islamic religious lessons during his time at the school. His teacher was named Maimunah and she lived in the Puncak area, the Cianjur Regency. "I remembered that he had studied "mengaji" (recitation of the Quran)" Tine said. Obama himself recalls, "In the Muslim school, the teacher wrote to tell mother I made faces during Koranic studies." Our guy in Jakarta writes: "The actual usage of the word 'mengaji' in Indonesian and Malaysian societies means the study of learning to recite the Quran in the Arabic language rather than the native tongue. "Mengagi" is a word and a term that is accorded the highest value and status in the mindset of fundamentalist societies here in Southeast Asia. To put it quite simply, 'mengaji classes' are not something that a non practicing or so-called moderate Muslim family would ever send their child to. To put this in a Christian context, this is something above and beyond simply enrolling your child in Sunday school classes." "The fact that Obama had attended mengaji classes is well known in Indonesia and has left many there wondering just when Obama is going to come out of the closet." "As I've stated before, the evidence seems to quite clearly show that both Ann Dunham and her husband Lolo Soetoro Mangunharjo were in fact devout Muslims themselves and they raised their son as such."
1972	In 2007, Obama's classmate Rony Amiris describes young Barry as enjoying playing football and marbles and of being a very devout Muslim. Amir said, "Barry was previously quite religious in Islam. "We previously often asked him to the prayer room close to the house. If he was wearing a sarong he looked funny," said Rony. Amiris now the manager of the Bank Mandiri, Jakarta, recently said, "Barry was previously quite religious in Islam. His birth father, Barack Hussein Obama was a Muslim economist from Kenya. Before marrying Ann Dunham, Hussein Obama was married to a woman from Kenya who had seven children. All the relatives of Barry's father were very devout Muslims" Rony extrapolates further, that Obama at one point had to change his religion if he ever intended later to run for the office of President of the United States because America would never elect a Muslim to the be President of the United States.
1972	In 2007, Emirsyah Satar, CEO of Garuda Indonesia, was quoted as saying, "He (Obama) was often in the prayer room wearing a 'sarong', at that time." "He was quite religious in Islam but only after marrying Michelle, he changed his religion."
1972	Upon Dunham's divorce from Lolo she sent 10-year-old Barack to live with her parents in Honolulu, while she and his half-sister stayed in Indonesia. There is little or no mention of Obama and religion for the next 15 years.
1988	When Obama first undertook his agitating work in Chicago's South Side poor neighborhoods, he was un-churched. Yet his office was in a Church and most of the folks he needed to agitate and organize were Church people -- pastors and congregants -- who took their churches and their church-going very seriously. Again and again, he was asked by pastors and church ladies, "Where do you go to Church, young man?" It was a question he dodged for a while, but finally he relented and joined a church. Obama didn't join just any church, but a huge black nationalist church, the Trinity United Church of Christ (UCC). Its pastor, Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright, unabashedly preaches a "black" gospel. Trinity describes itself as a "congregation which is Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian. Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an African people, and remain 'true to our native land,' the mother continent, the cradle of civilization." "Trinity has a non-negotiable commitment to Africa, is committed to the historical education of African people in diaspora and committed to liberation, restoration, and economic parity." Trinity United Church of Christ adopted the Black Value System written by the Manford Byrd Recognition Committee chaired by Vallmer Jordan in 1981. They believe in the following 12 precepts and covenantal statements. These Black Ethics must be taught and exemplified in homes, churches, nurseries and schools, wherever Blacks are gathered. They must reflect on the following concepts: 1. Commitment to God 2. Commitment to the Black Community 3. Commitment to the Black Family 4. Dedication to the Pursuit of Education 5. Dedication to the Pursuit of Excellence 6. Adherence to the Black Work Ethic 7. Commitment to Self-Discipline and Self-Respect 8. Disavowal of the Pursuit of "Middleclassness" 9. Pledge to make the fruits of all developing and acquired skills available to the Black Community 10. Pledge to Allocate Regularly, a Portion of Personal Resources for Strengthening and Supporting Black Institutions 11. Pledge allegiance to all Black leadership who espouse and embrace the Black Value System 12. Personal commitment to embracement of the Black Value System. Please read the "Black Value System" again -- only this time, substitute the word "White" for "Black." If your church had such a "White Value System" Jesse and Al and the NAACP would have 10,000 demonstrators out front in a heartbeat. HERE is the expanded "Black Value System" and it's a MUST READ. Trinity is very anti-Israel and supports divestment. There are 15 videos on Trinity United Church of Christ "About" page. You can access them by staring video #1 (double-click) and then clicking the Menu button on the player after its started. The 2nd video is truly disturbing. In it you can hear the Rev. Wright spew 5 minutes of hate speech. Note: The videos referenced in the above paragraph have been taken down -- more scrubbing of the Internet by Obama's forces -- but HERE'S the link to the YouTube version and it's a must watch.
1988	Obama soon falls under the spell of the leftist black nationalist preacher, who preaches African-American unity through antipathy toward whites. Wright, who acts as Obama's personal spiritual adviser, is militantly Afrocentric. His website proudly claims, "We are an African people, and remain 'true to our native land,' the mother continent, the cradle of civilization." Wright, who married the Obama's, remains a major influence on the presidential candidate. The title of Obama's second book, The "Audacity of Hope," is borrowed from one of Wright's sermons. When he took over Trinity United Church of Christ in 1972, Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. was a maverick pastor with a wardrobe of dashikis and a militant message. He graduated from Howard University and earned bachelor's and master's degrees in English with a focus on African spirituals. At the University of Chicago Divinity School, he earned another masters degree in the history of religions with a focus on Islam. This video, also available above, presents an example of the Rev. Wright's beliefs -- it is truly disturbing. Wright sought to build his church on the black theology of liberation, the Marxist ideology introduced in 1968 by Rev. James Cone of New York. It emphasizes Africa's contribution to Christianity rather than that of mainstream white theologians. At Trinity UCC's 2007 Trumpet Gala, Wright named the "Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan," acting head of the Nation of Islam, as Trinity's "Man of the Year," and awarded him the the "Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., Lifetime Achievement Trumpeteer Award." It was Farrakhan, who was quoted saying, "White people are potential humans -- they haven't evolved yet" (More racist quotes from Louis Farrakhan and a video that will introduce you to T. H. L. Farrakhan) Ben Wallace-Wells notes in Rolling Stone: "This is as openly radical a background as any significant American political figure has ever emerged from."
1988	Pope Benedict XVI fought the infiltration of Marxists promoting Liberation Theology in the church. In "Liberation Theology" (2007) he wrote: "...where the Marxist ideology of liberation had been consistently applied, a total lack of freedom had developed, whose horrors were now laid bare before the eyes of the entire world. Wherever politics tries to be redemptive, it is promising too much. Where it wishes to do the work of God, it becomes not divine, but demonic."
1988	Nobody, except Obama knows if his conversion to Christianity is real or not. Although some reports and even Obama have referred to a "baptism", there doesn't appear to be any record of a baptism. Chicago-based journalist, broadcaster and critic Andy Martin, when asked about Obama's baptism, wrote, "I have never been able to obtain any evidence that he was baptized, although I asked for those records." It seems that Obama's conversion occurred when he answered one of Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright's altar calls by walking down the aisle of Trinity Church to make a formal commitment of his faith. Cathleen Falsani, religion columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, writes, "He (Obama) described his conversion experience in his mid-20s, how he walked the aisle at Trinity United Church of Christ one Sunday in a public affirmation of his private change of heart." "I came to Christianity through the black church tradition where the line between evangelical and non-evangelical is completely blurred. Nobody knows exactly what it means." "Does it mean that you feel you've got a personal relationship with Christ the savior? Then that's directly part of the black church experience. Does it mean you're born-again in a classic sense, with all the accoutrements that go along with that, as it's understood by some other tradition? I'm not sure." "There are aspects of Christian tradition that I'm comfortable with and aspects that I'm not. There are passages of the Bible that make perfect sense to me and others that I go, 'Ya know, I'm not sure about that.'" "It wasn't an epiphany," he says of that public profession of faith. "It was much more of a gradual process for me. I know there are some people who fall out. Which is wonderful. God bless them.... I think it was just a moment to certify or publicly affirm a growing faith in me." Falsani warns us that Obama's walking the aisle at Trinity is poles apart from what Christians commonly refer to as being "saved, transformed or washed in the blood." In other words, it's not to be confused with what Jesus called being "born again." As Mr. Obama himself explains, "It wasn't an epiphany … but just a moment to certify or publicly affirm a growing faith in me." In another account of this event, Manya Brachear, writing in the Chicago Tribune, describes the event thusly: "When Obama sought his own church community, he felt increasingly at home at Trinity. Before leaving for Harvard Law School in 1988, he responded to one of Wright's altar calls and declared a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Falsani wonders, "What kind of faith is it that is growing in Barack Obama? Is it the historic Christian faith? Not according to the good senator, who describes his faith as: (1) Suspicious of dogma (2) Without any monopoly on the truth (3) Nontransferable to others (4) Infused with a big healthy dose of doubt, and (5) Indulgent of and compatible with all other religions." Unlike traditional Christianity, which Mr. Obama bemoans for its "call to evangelize and proselytize," the good senator's faith is strictly a personal and private affair. Although he has no qualms about parading it in public in hopes of bolstering his political career, he would never dream of preaching it to others in hopes of converting them to Christ. At the core of Obama's faith -- whether lapsed Muslim, new Christian or some mixture of the two -- is African nativism and Obama's having pledged allegiance to the Black Value System raises political issues of its own. 1988	Obama officially becomes an apostate Muslim by his conversion and the question needs to be asked, was Obama's conversion faith-based or political expediency? In either case, Muslims view Obama as first a Muslim and then as an apostate Muslim. He faces the death penalty in nearly the entire Islamic world. There is no dispute among either ancient or modern Muslim scholars that under Islamic law, a murtadd, "one who turns his back on Islam," an apostate, must be put to death. Irtidad, apostasy, is committing treason against God, and traitors deserve to be killed. At a minimum, other Muslims would shun him if not kill him and his mother. The fact they are eagerly welcomed by the Muslim community begs the question, is he their 'Manchurian' candidate? At a minimum, Obama should be asked if he will support the efforts of Christian missionaries in Islamic countries to peacefully convert Muslims to Christianity. But the big question remains -- did Obama actually convert? Has he publicly rejected his Muslim religion and accepted Christ? The punishment for apostasy in Islam
1992	Obama and Michelle Robinson of Chicago, Illinois are married (October 18, 1992). The ceremony was performed by Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois.
1992	Obama's family connections to Islam would endure, however. For example, his brother Roy opted for Islam over Christianity, as Obama recounted when describing his 1992 wedding. "The person who made me proudest of all," Obama wrote, "was Roy. Actually, now we call him Abongo, his Luo name, for two years ago he decided to reassert his African heritage and Islamic faith. He has sworn off pork and tobacco and alcohol." Abongo "Roy" Obama is a Luo activist and a militant Muslim who argues that the black man must "liberate himself from the poisoning influences of European culture." He urges his younger brother to embrace his African heritage.
2007	On January 24. the Obama campaign released the following statement, "To be clear, Senator Obama has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim, and is a committed Christian who attends the United Church of Christ in Chicago. This statement is refuted by the campaign on March 14th. (Below)
2007	On February 27th, Barack Hussein Obama said the Muslim call to prayer is "one of the prettiest sounds on Earth." In an interview with Nicholas Kristof, published in The New York Times, Obama recited the Muslim call to prayer, the Adhan, "with a first-class [Arabic] accent." The opening lines of the Adhan (Azaan) is the Shahada: "Allah is Supreme! Allah is Supreme! Allah is Supreme! Allah is Supreme! I witness that there is no god but Allah I witness that there is no god but Allah I witness that Muhammad is his prophet... " According to Islamic scholars, reciting the Shahada, the Muslim declaration of faith, makes one a Muslim. This simple yet profound statement expresses a Muslim's complete acceptance of, and total commitment to, the message of Islam. Obama knows this from his Quranic studies -- and he knows the New York Times will publish this fact and it will be seen throughout the world. Original New York Times source -- requires LogIn.
2007	Obama's pastor Jeremiah A. Wright told The New York Times in an interview, published March 6th: "When his (Obama's) enemies find out that in 1984 I went to Tripoli," with Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan to visit Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, "a lot of his Jewish support will dry up quicker than a snowball in hell."
2007	On March 14th, in a statement to The Times, the Obama campaign offered this statement to correct their previous statement: "Obama has never been a practicing Muslim. The statement added that as a child, Obama had spent time in the neighborhood's Islamic center." This is a departure from the earlier statement made by the Obama campaign on January 24. "To be clear, Senator Obama has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim, and is a committed Christian who attends the United Church of Christ in Chicago. In three months Barrack's campaign has gone from describing the U.S. presidential hopeful as never having been a Muslim and never having been raised as a Muslim to now having never having been a practicing Muslim. First was the lie, now the semi-lie. And, the original statement began, "To be clear ..." Dissimulation and al-taqiyya as a political tactic. What's with the semantics? Statements from Obama's campaign appear to have evolved, to say the least.
2007	From the New York Times, "Mr. Obama has written that when he became a Christian, he 'felt God's spirit beckoning' and 'submitted myself to His will and dedicated myself to discovering His truth.' While he has said he shares core Christian beliefs in God and in Jesus as his resurrected son."
2007	April 30th, The New York Times has a report on its front page about Obama's strained relationship with his pastor, also known as his "spiritual mentor." The Times does tend to downplay some of the harsher statements that Pastor Wright has made about Israel, Wright's support for Louis Farrakhan; trips to Libya and more. Pastor Wright is a supporter of Louis Farrakhan, and in 1984 traveled with him to visit Col. Muammar al-Gadaffi, an archenemy of Israel and America and a firm supporter of terror groups. Wright has also been a severe critic of Israel. In his own words: "The Israelis have illegally occupied Palestinian territories for almost 40 years now. It took a divestment campaign to wake the business community up concerning the South Africa issue. Divestment has now hit the table again as a strategy to wake the business community up and to wake Americans up concerning the injustice and the racism under which the Palestinians have lived because of Zionism."
2007	Sen. Barack Obama told a church convention Saturday that some right-wing evangelical leaders have exploited and politicized religious beliefs in an effort to sow division. As he sat down to have a slice of pie with a small group of potential voters and an elderly woman asked him about being Muslim. "I've always been a Christian," the Illinois Democrat responded in true Clintonesque fashion, "I have never practiced [Islam]." Even though his father was a Muslim. His stepfather is a Muslim. His grandfather was a Muslim, His step-grandmother is a Muslim. His half-brothers and sisters are Muslims. His 1st cousin Rail Odinga is a Muslim who conspired with Shiekh Abdullah Abdi, chairman of the National Muslim Leaders Forum of Kenya to install an Islamic government in Kenya, Obama insists he was never a Muslim. In his autobiography, "Dreams From My Father," Obama mentions studying the Quran. His teacher Tine Hahiyary said that she remembered that he had studied "menjaji" (recitation of the Quran)." Classmate Rony Amiris described Obama as being a very devout Muslim, saying, "Barry was previously quite religious in Islam." Another classmate, Emirsyah Satar, now the CEO of Garuda Indonesia, was quoted as saying, "He (Obama) was often in the prayer room wearing a 'sarong'. (See 1971 and 1972, above.) Yet, on his official campaign website, Obama has posted this statement, "Barack has never been a Muslim or practiced any other faith besides Christianity." What was he for the 27 years before his alleged conversion if he wasn't a Muslim?
2007	An American Expat in Southeast Asia blog, written by an American who has lived in Indonesia for 20 years and has met with both the Taliban and al-Qaeda, contains the following: "Barack Hussein Obama might have convinced some Americans that he is no longer a Muslim, but so far he has not convinced many in the world's most populous Muslim country who still see him as a Muslim and a crusader for Islam and world peace." "Barack Hussein Obama's race, his staunch opposition to the war in Iraq, his sympathy to Islam and Muslims worldwide and his Muslim heritage receive the Indonesian media coverage. There is no mention of his apostasy." "A good example of how some of the Indonesian media is reporting on Obama's religion can be found in the following." 2008	The San Francisco Chronicle reported on February, 28th, that the IRS is investigating the United Church of Christ over a speech Obama gave at its national meeting last year after he became a candidate for president, the denomination said Tuesday. In a letter the denomination received Monday, the IRS said "reasonable belief exists" that the circumstances surrounding the speech violated restrictions on political activity for tax-exempt organizations. The denomination has denied any wrongdoing. The IRS said in the letter that it was concerned about articles posted on the church's Web site and on other sites stating that Obama had addressed nearly 10,000 people at the event. The agency also said Obama volunteers had staffed campaign tables "outside the center to promote his campaign." Amy Brundage, an Obama spokeswoman, insisted the speech was not a campaign event. In the address, Obama spoke about his personal spiritual journey and had said that faith had been misused in the past to divide Americans, partly because of the Christian right.

In some of his strongest comments to date, Obama, in response to a question about his religious beliefs, said he wanted to put an end to "so much confusion [that has been] deliberately perpetrated."

Obama's bid to end the rumor-mongering came just days after his campaign accused Hillary Rodham Clinton of launching a deliberate smear after the Drudge Report Web site reported that one of her staffers had forwarded photos of him wearing a turban on a 2006 trip to Africa.

In addition, numerous e-mails have circulated for months saying falsely that Obama is a Muslim.

Obama's late father, who was from Kenya, was a Christian who converted to Islam, though he was not religious. Obama himself was never a Muslim and has been a member of the same Christian church for the last 20 years.

On a recent visit to Cleveland, The Post conducted an informal survey of about a dozen people and found that most didn't know Obama's faith - and many incorrectly assumed he was a Muslim.

Some Ohio Democrats even thought he had sworn the oath of office while holding the Koran - another false Internet rumor.

Trying to reassure voters yesterday, Obama told the audience in rural Nelsonville that they would feel right at home in his church in Chicago.

Meanwhile, Clinton and Obama were battling for an edge in Ohio - which holds its primary tomorrow - as polls showed her with a lead.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer put Clinton up by 4 points, 47 to 43 percent, while the Columbus Dispatch poll gave her a 16-point lead, 56 to 40 percent.

Both campaigned in Westerville, Ohio, but missed each other by several hours.

Clinton continued to hammer Obama's experience, saying he, while eloquent in making promises, was short on results.

"For some people, this election is about how you feel, it's about speeches," Clinton told a rally of about 2,000 people. "Well, that's not what it's about for me. It's about solutions."

Clinton held rallies in Youngstown, Akron and Cleveland, and had another event on tap for today in Toledo before she flies for a nationwide town-hall meeting in Texas.

Obama hit back hard at Clinton, blasting a TV ad she released that called her the candidate better able to respond to a national crisis in the wee hours.

"What precise foreign-policy experience is she claiming that makes her qualified to answer that telephone call at 3 a.m. in the morning?" Obama said at a town-hall meeting.

"She didn't give diplomacy a chance. And to this day, she won't even admit that her vote was a mistake - or even that it was a vote for war," he said.

"When it came time to make the most important foreign-policy decision of our generation, the decision to invade Iraq, Sen. Clinton got it wrong."

During the 20th Democratic presidential debate Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Barack Obama said the one vote he would take back was his 2005 U.S. Senate vote to help save the life of Terri Schiavo, a brain-injured Florida woman.

"We adjourned with a unanimous agreement that eventually allowed Congress to interject itself into that decision-making process of the families," Obama said. "It wasn't something I was comfortable with, but it was not something that I stood on the floor and stopped. And I think that was a mistake."

Schiavo was not dying nor terminally ill; she was not brain-dead nor in a coma. Yet for seven years, her husband, Michael, sought to have her feeding tube removed. Congress intervened toward the end, but it was not enough. Schiavo died March 31, 2005, after 13 days of court-ordered dehydration and starvation.

Jill Stanek, a pro-life speaker and blogger, called Obama "utterly pro-death."

McMINNVILLE, Ore. — On the ballot this month in Yamhill County are questions such as whether the United States should purchase the Louisiana Territory or whether Paul Newman or Garth Brooks ought to be the national director of entertainment.

Just kidding!

The western Oregon county is spending $10,000 for a dry run of a new voting system. It is mailing mock ballots to voters for the March 11 ballot, hoping to work out any kinks in the system before an election May 20 in which the results will be real.

Oregon holds elections in March, but nobody submitted any questions for the ballot in Yamhill County. Rather than skip the election, the county decided to use it as a test of a new scanning system, as training for elections workers and as a warm-up for voters who will cast ballots in a real primary election in May.

Mitt Romney formally threw his support to John McCain this afternoon, calling the man he clashed heatedly with "a true American hero" and urging his delegates to support his former rival.

"With their rhetoric, our Democratic opponents are very skilled at striking heroic poses," Romney said, speaking at his Boston headquarters with McCain by his side. "With our Republican nominee we’re going to offer the American people the real thing.

McCain, who had met privately with his foe before the press conference, thanked Romney for his support and saluted his former rival for having run a "fine, intensive and honorable campaign."

Still, when reporters pointed out the differences the two had, McCain acknowledged the bad blood.

"We all know it was a hard campaign," McCain said. "Primaries are tough."

Just in case we had forgotten, the DNC sent out one of the Arizonan's tougher shots at a foe he could barely conceal his contempt for.

McCain accused Romney of "wholesale deception of voters," the day before the hard-fought Florida primary on Jan. 28. "On every one of the issues he has attacked us on, Mitt Romney was for it before he was against it," McCain said then.

Despite the at-times ugly exchanges between the two during the past year, today's press conference, while not full of warmth, was not especially stilted.

The difference was especially stark compared to the last GOP nomination battle in 2000. As opposed to the week Romney took before endorsing, it took two months for McCain to get behind George W. Bush after that bitter contest. And when he did so in May of that year he initially declined to use the word "endorse." Only after being asked by a reporter why he wouldn't formally offer his blessing did McCain say "I endorse Gov. Bush" — and then he said it over and over again as if to show his annoyance.

Romney today was gracious, lavishing praise in prepared remarks on the man who defeated him.

"This is a man who tied his political fortunes to the fortunes of his country in a time of war," Romney said. "Such courage is not always rewarded in politics, but it was this time — and that is a credit to both the man and to the party he will lead in the election of 2008."

During a brief question-and-answer session with reporters, both downplayed differences they had, choosing instead to focus on a broad philosophical agreement and shared views on the war.

By releasing his supporters now, Romney casts himself as a loyal party man and ostensibly prevents Mike Huckabee from formally surpassing him in the delegate count — denying the former Arkansas governor a talking point in a possible 2012 or 2016 GOP.

Huckabee, for his part, is offering no sign that he'll get behind McCain anytime soon.

"I may be beaten, but I'm not one to quit," he said in a telephone interview on Fox News held immediately after Romney's endorsement.

And even though there are fewer delegates still up for grabs than what Huckabee needs to win the nomination, he promised to stay in until a candidate got the necessary 1,191.

Counting Romney's pledged delegates — AP has them pegged at 280 — McCain could reach that point on March 4, when Texas, Ohio, Vermont and Rhode Island hold primaries.

Former president George H.W. Bush will endorse Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in Houston on Monday during a media availability at 9:30 a.m. Texas time, Republican sources say.

President Bush will be in Africa at the time. He told “Fox News Sunday” last weekend that he would help make the case for McCain’s conservative credentials as soon as there was an official nominee.

The endorsement by the former president does two things that are crucial to McCain as he tries to capitalize on the potential advantages of being the nominee when Democrats are still fighting it out:

— It begins to make former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee look like he’s not being a team player, raising expectations that he should drop out or run a quieter campaign.

— It also undercuts Republicans who are reluctant to fully support McCain because of his past differences with the party’s right wing.

The father's endorsement follows former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush's decision to back McCain. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney had warm relations with both men and had hoped their endorsements would ignite his candidacy, which he ended last week.

The Texas primary is March 4.

Most Romney delegates now plan to back McCain

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The majority of Michigan's Republican presidential delegates say they'll back Sen. John McCain now that primary winner Mitt Romney is out of the race, although it's still unclear how many will go to the national convention.

The Republican National Committee stripped Michigan of half its 60 delegates for defying party rules by moving its presidential primary to Jan. 15.

Counting just the 30 Michigan delegates allowed so far, 23 were supposed to go to Romney, who won Michigan's primary. Although those delegates technically will go the Sept. 1-4 Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul uncommitted to any candidate, four-fifths now say they'll back McCain.

That gives McCain 871 total delegates nationally, according to an Associated Press tally. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee has 245, while Romney's total dropped to 253.

With the Romney delegates divvied up, McCain has the backing of 24 Michigan national delegates, while Huckabee has the backing of four. It was unclear which candidates two delegates would back.

But GOP activists are sure they'll get 57 pledged delegates and three unpledged delegates seated in Minneapolis-St. Paul, so they filled all those spots — plus 57 for alternates — during their state convention Friday and Saturday at the Lansing Center.

Of the 57 pledged delegates, Romney was supposed to get 45. At least 36 now plan to back McCain, according to conversations with delegates and party leaders. The Arizona senator already had 10 delegates after winning 30 percent of the primary vote, plus the backing of RNC members Chuck Yob and Holly Hughes, two of the three unpledged delegates.

The third unpledged delegate, state GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis, remains uncommitted.

Huckabee won two delegates based on those primary results and has the backing of at least six of the former Romney delegates, according to Huckabee supporters.

Huckabee's wife Janet spoke at the state convention and said the contest isn't over yet, since no one has gotten the 1,191 delegates needed to clinch the nomination.

Michigan's delegate process is complicated because the party has no process in place for choosing just 30 delegates. Anuzis said he expects Michigan and other states stripped of half their delegates for moving up their primary contests would ask for waivers once the national convention starts so all of their delegates can be seated.

If the waiver isn't granted, Anuzis said it's likely that the three unpledged delegates probably would be dropped as delegates. He thinks the next step would be to drop the 12 at-large delegates, as well as one each from the state's 15 congressional districts.

If that happens, Huckabee could end up without any Michigan delegates, Anuzis said, since the only two delegates he has for sure are at-large delegates.

Although McCain didn't attend the state convention, he did speak to the 3,000 Republican activists in a pre-taped video. He thanked his supporters and asked those who had backed his opponents to come aboard.

"I humbly ask for your support," McCain said. "Our party needs to come together. We have a tough fight ahead of us. In order to be successful, we need to be united. I need you on the team."

Attorney General Mike Cox, a McCain supporter, said McCain can do well in Michigan because he appeals to independents and conservative Democrats as well as Republicans. McCain beat George W. Bush in Michigan's 2000 GOP presidential primary, largely with the help of non-Republicans.

"We always like scrappers and populist types of candidates, and McCain fits that description," Cox said.

Republicans re-elected Hughes to the RNC and elected Keith Butler to the RNC to replace Yob after the convention.

Picking a Vice President: The Republicans

Now that the picture is a little clearer and we have a better idea of who might be the
nominee in each party, its time to play one of my favorite games: Pick the vice
president.

I know its early but many have already started speculating, so why shouldnt we? Here
are my best guesses for the likely Republican nominee for president: John McCain.

I believe his nominee will need to balance McCain personally and professionally. By that,
I mean his best option would be a vice presidential nominee that is younger, possibly a
woman or minority (particularly a Hispanic that could help the party in this growing
portion of the electorate), conservative enough to appease the right wing of the party but
not so conservative that it will scare off moderates and independents, and someone who
comes from anywhere but Washington, DC. Given that job announcement, I believe the
following people will be likely prospects:

- SC Gov. Mark Sanford: hes young (47), conservative, anti-pork, a former congressman
who now has executive experience, and he fits nicely with McCains maverick credentials.
- MN Gov. Tim Pawlenty: hes also young (47), conservative enough, hails from a possible
battleground state, and has executive, non-Washington, DC experience
- FL Gov. Charlie Crist: he endorsed McCain at a critical time helping ensure a McCain
victory in Florida, he lives outside the Capital Beltway, and hes very popular (even
more than Jeb Bush) in Florida which will be a must-win state in 2008
- TX Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson: shes a woman (obviously), is conservative enough but
certainly will not repel moderates or conservatives, and has experience outside of her
time in the US Senate
- John Kasich: the former OH congressman is a fiscal conservative, youthful, a good
campaigner, hails from a competitive/swing state that is a must win in 2008, and hes
been out of Congress long enough to be considered an outsider
- SD Sen. John Thune: I know hes in the Senate, but Thunes youthfulness and near
legend reputation for defeating Senator Minority Leader Tom Daschle could help McCain with
conservatives. Hes a good campaigner, has a maverick streak, and comes from the Midwest
which is likely to be one of the battlegrounds of 2008.

There are several candidates who are mentioned that I dont believe stand a chance in you
know where of getting McCains nod. They include the following:
- Mike Huckabee: while he could make Arkansas competitive and he has done better than
expected in the primaries, he has one big problem: Huckabee is the only person Rush
Limbaugh hates more than John McCain. Yes, Huck brings evangelicals to the voting booth,
but he is despised by fiscal conservatives and talk radio. And, some of his social views
could be enough to repel moderates and independents who might have otherwise been inclined
to vote for McCain. Finally, the longer he fights for the nomination the more he will
annoy McCain. I just dont think he is a reasonable option for McCain.
- Mitt Romney: did you watch the debates? McCain hates Romney. I cant imagine watching
these two campaign together acting like they like each other.
- Fred Thompson: he doesnt help McCain expand the base (TN is likely to go Republican in
2008) and he looks older than McCain. The generational difference between that ticket and
the Democrats would simply be too stark. Plus, all of his experience is based in
Washington, DC. That doesnt help McCain.
- Rudy Guiliani and Sen. Chuck Hagel: Both men are disliked by the partys conservative
base for different reasons. They would force a revolt among the right wing of the party.
- George Allen: our former senator once had a very bright future in national politics, but
his loss in 2006 and the reasons for that loss have tarnished his image. Without the
macaca incident, George Allen would have fit many of the criteria McCain is looking
for including executive experience, conservative record that isnt too oft-putting to
moderates, securing a possible swing state, and youthfulness. But all of the good
qualities are neutralized by his 2006 campaign performance.
- Sen. Mel Martinez: the Florida Senator was an early backer of McCain and could help him
secure Florida and the Hispanic vote nationwide, but he is too closely tied to George
Bush, isnt a very strong campaigner and he was born in Cuba making him constitutionally
unable to serve as president.
- Colin Powell: hes too moderate for the conservative wing of the party and in a recent
CNN interview he refused to even endorse McCain and indicated hed be open to voting for
Barack Obama.
- Sens. Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins: too liberal and from the Senate.

I just realized that my list of those who wont be considered is longer than the list of
those who will be considered!

Gallup: 51 Percent of Republicans 'Satisfied With McCain'

Gallup puts Obama up nationally over Hillary Clinton, 47 percent to 44 percent.

They put McCain up, 53 percent to 27 percent for Huckabee. Ron Paul's 8 percent is the highest he's been in their national polls.

Head to head, McCain edges Hillary, 49-48 among likely voters, but of course that's within the margin of error. Among registered voters, it's a 48-48 tie, and among adults, it's McCain again, 48 percent to 47 percent.

Obama beats McCain among likely voters, 50 to 46 percent, and among registered, it's Obama 49 percent to McCain 46 percent. Among adults, the numbers are pretty much the same.

The most ominous number in the poll for McCain comes on the question, "Would you be satisfied if John McCain ended up the winner in the Republican race, or would you have preferred to see one of the other Republican presidential candidates win?" Right now it's 51 percent satisfied, 45 percent "would have preferred another."

Mike Huckabee Surprises With Southern State Wins, Stays in Republican Race
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee surprised political observers again with a strong showing in several Super Tuesday states. Exit Polling Data Confirms Republicans Nationwide Strongly Pro-Life on Abortion

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Exit polling data on Super Tuesday from across the country showed a large majority of Republican voters in most states take a pro-life position on abortion. The data showed Republicans in western and southern states are strongly pro-life while those in the northeast are more likely to back abortion. More than three-fourths of all Republicans in Missouri (74-23 percent), Tennessee (75-22), Alabama (76-20), Oklahoma (76-22) and Arkansas (81-18) say they want all or most abortions illegal and take a pro-life position Voters in Georgia join their southern counterparts in taking a pro-life position by a 64 to 33 percentage point margin. Some 64 percent of Republicans in Illinois said they want all or most abortions illegal while just 33 percent want all or most to remain legal. Western state Republicans also want abortions made illegal by a majority margin, including in California.
Golden State Republicans take a pro-life position by a 54 to 42 percentage point margin. In Arizona, 58 percent of Republicans take a pro-life position compared to just 37 percent who don't while Utah Republicans were even more strongly pro-life with a 85-13 percentage point split. New York Republicans are split 49-48 percent in favor of legalized abortion, and the split is 50-46 in favor of abortion in Connecticut, 53-46 percent in New Jersey, and 56-41 percent in Massachusetts. John McCain Has Problems With Pro-Life Vote, Including States He Won
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Exit polls showed a majority of Republicans in most Super Tuesday states take a strong pro-life position but John McCain had problems getting their support even in states he won. That could be a problem for the Arizona senator even though he opposes abortion and has called for overturning Roe v. Wade. In every case, McCain's share of the pro-life vote was less than his overall vote total in the state and he relied on his strength with pro-abortion Republicans to win. That could help him appeal to independent voters in November, but points to concerns about his ability to hold the Republican pro-life base. Although McCain won Missouri and Oklahoma, pro-life voters there, encouraged by endorsements from statewide pro-life groups, sided with Huckabee. The senator also won California over Mitt Romney on a 44-27 percent margin but Romney won among pro-life voters there 33-31 percent over McCain. They say they see the day coming that the high court reverses the decision and allows states to, once again, provide legal protection for unborn children. Mitt Romney Wins Nevada Caucus, Largely Ignored by Mainstream Media
Carson City, NV (LifeNews.com) -- Mitt Romney won the Nevada caucus handily but his landslide victory went largely ignored by the mainstream media. Before the vote, Nevada didn't receive the attention as did the South Carolina primary and the media mostly focused on the southern state as results came in during the evening. With 99 percent of the precincts recorded, Romney received 51 percent of the state delegates with no other Republican candidate coming anywhere close. He was the only major candidate to campaign in the state while most of the rest of the Republican field stayed in South Carolina for the first-in-the-South primary. Ron Paul finished in second place for the first time in any presidential battleground state as he captured 14 percent of the state delegates. John McCain, who won South Carolina, finished third with 13 percent of the delegates. Looking at other candidates in Nevada, Mike Huckabee received 8 percent of the delegates as did Fred Thompson while Rudy Giuliani received only four percent and Duncan Hunter two percent.
