Last Friday at (le) Posson Rouge, The MuseBox put together an incredible event for up-and-coming Toronto indie-pop act, AMIT. Teaming up with Art Battles and DJ Teenwolf, the event became more than just a typical show for a largely unknown artist.

With a draw of over 500 people at the brand new venue (which featured Chuck Close artwork throughout the venue), 11 live artists painted backdrops while AMIT and DJ Teenwolf performed. With Magic Hat providing cheap and great beer, the night was definitely one to remember!

While seeing an average band at an average venue for an average performance in NYC is far from engaging, there are few things more fascinating than hearing an incredible night of music from a rapidly emerging artist for the first time. Add onto this a groundbreaking and standard-setting new venue and astonishing live artists painting a backdrop for the band as they play and it becomes an unforgettable spectacle.

Making his way across the Canadian/U.S. border for a debut NYC performance, AMIT will be teaming up with Art Battles (featuring 11 of NYC’s best live artists) and Le Poisson Rouge (previously the legendary Village Gates) on Friday, September 26th for the event of a lifetime. AMIT has recently been a featured artist on Myspace Canada and also had a song featured in the classic Dance Dance Revolution video game, not to mention his brand new EP, Hello World, being released in mid-October.

After AMIT’s performance, DJ Teen Wolf (of Ninja Sonic / Sound Advice) will begin spinning for a showcase of six live artists battling head to head. The winners of each match will be determined by crowd participation. All work created during the night will be available to purchase.

Our friends in Edison Glass had a pretty good weekend. Not only did they get to play with J. Mascis, Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, Tom Verlaine, and Nels Cline on Friday night to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Fender Jazzmaster, they also got some pretty big notice for it.

The Berkeley Sessions, premiers tonight, September 10 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on Bravo! Canada. This new, six-episode original series, which was Music Supervised and Booked by The MuseBox, spotlights an eclectic group of singers and musicians as they entertain audiences at Toronto’s Berkeley Church. Produced in association with Bravo!, the beautifully shot, weekly series features performances by indie-rock father-son duo Bill and Joel Plaskett (Sept. 10); alt-country artist Jon Langford (Sept. 17); pop singer Sarah Slean (Sept. 24); neo-southern country-gothic artist Jim White (Oct. 1); acoustic guitar virtuoso Kaki King (Oct. 8); and singer-songwriter Pete Elkas (Oct. 15).

"The Berkeley Sessions' production was an exciting project to be involved with," states The MuseBox's Talent Booker Dan Efram. Episode 1: Canadian indie-rocker Joel Plaskett performs, alongside his father Bill, the acoustic versions of his hits Nowhere With You and Happen Now.

THE PAPER CRANES BC SHOW UPDATE!

For all of our West Coaster friends, as previously mentioned, The Paper Cranes will be opening for The Walkmen on August 29th at Sugar Nightclub, as part of the Rifflandia Music Fest!

The Apples in stereo Do The Colbert Report

Last week, a bunch of us MuseBoxers crowded into the lovely studios of The Colbert Report to watch our very own The Apples in stereo perform for the second time on the show. Needless to say, it was a blast and the band totally killed it. Not only did they blow away the studio audience (and the country) with the tune "Can You Feel It?", they took an encore to perform the Colbert-inspired song "Stephen, Stephen" with none other than Colbert himself picking up the tambourine and joining in on the action. It was a pretty proud moment for all of us here at The MuseBox, and we can't wait for the band's next appearance. AFTER THE JUMP FEST 2008

Every year, NYC's music blogger coalition After the Jump calls on all of its resources to put together a giant music festival on the first day of summer. This year, The Musebox was proud to promote and be a part of After the Jump Fest 2008.

This year's festival turned out to be tremendous success, an amazing day filled with music, free ice cream, and fun in the sun. Referred to by Brooklyn Radio as a “proverbial spice cabinet,” After the Jump Fest 2008, the effort 20 New York City music bloggers to help new bands gain exposure, featured a multitude of bands at their best. Among the performers were Health, Titus Andronicus, and The Musebox’s own Bryan Scary & the Shredding Tears.

After the Jump Fest 2008 was able to raise more than $3,000 for Donors Choose and Education Through Music, charities that provide New York City schools with funding and programming.
